Any1 watching this thinking about picking up and learning guitar, just do it, you won't regret it. I started 2 and 1/2 years ago and loving it. There are very affordable and decent guitars and amps to learn on. You can even buy used. And alot of info available on the internet to learn. Of course Lauren Bateman is one of my go to teachers. So in short, start this journey
Hi Lauren, many thanks for your tuition, you have good clear diction and you make the subject easier to understand. This is really great for old timers like me at 73. I applaud you, thanks once again.
That's so cool Phil - congratulations ! Not sure if anyone mentioned to you but if your guitar is coming from someplace that has much different current climate / weather than where you live it's a good idea to let it gently acclimate for a day or so before trying to play it... this is particularly important for acoustic guitars because the wood of the body / neck can really be influenced by changes in temp / humidity etc. It can be hard to wait that extra time but it will make your guitar happier !
So cool, Phil, congratulations! (One little tip: my first guitar had a high action (i.e. distance between the fretboard and the strings), which unnecessarily made playing more difficult. The action can be lowered easily, there are tutorials on TH-cam or take it to a guitar shop/luthier.) Best wishes and fun for your journey!
@@kevinford6372 Unfortunately things have been going very slow. I've been dealing with pancreatic cancer since October with the ensuing chemo treatments and then followed up by major surgery a few weeks ago. Once I recover from the surgery I'll then have to go again through more chemo therapy which really knocks the hell out of you. I have a Taylor 214ce Plus guitar which is beautiful and the action seems to be very good. I keep it out on a stand in my living room along with a chair, music stand and a print out that I made of Luaren's lesson course. Seems as though I've been on the same page for over a month learning the C, D, G and Em chords As it goes now I do numerous 5 to 10 minute practice sessions during the course of the day so progress has obviously been a tad slow, but I'm persisting as best I can given my circumstance. Other than that thank you for asking how I'm progressing and it's great to hear that you're still at it and thoroughly enjoying your guitar journey. ☺
Another wonderful master class. What is even better is you get to learn two songs while practising with this video for a beginner. This makes practiceing your guitar more enjoyable. Lauren continues to explain the guitar with great visuals. Maybe a few more practice chords video that includes an exercise where you’ll learn a song at the same time
Just retired, 64, now I want to pick up where I left off from guitar lessons in 1977, which is from the very beginning. You have a lot of beginner videos. Which is the first one I should start with? I'm excited, but I want to start off right. I've been to your website and I'm willing to get going.
I've said it before, Lauren. I am so much more confident when picking up my guitar. Even when I go back to spider exercises, my fingers still fly around. I have skinny fingers. But when I push down on the string it makes that puff out. Now if I don't push down on the string hard enough I I get the blah. Love the way you teach. One video at a time

Another great advice video! I have tried over and over and over on the d chord but my dang long big fingers just won't fit correctly on the E and B strings. So, I'm barring or playing the 2 strings with one finger in the 3rd fret and the d chord with just 2 fingers. I've found the sound is very similar at least until I figure out how to fit my fingers correctly.

I am so thankful to have found your page. I’m 53 and have always wanted to learn how to play the guitar. Fear of not being very good and be laughed at held me back. Hopefully starting April 2024 the current chapter in my life will close with me being a warrior after a cancer diagnosis, surgery and months of chemo and radiation. I got my guitar a few weeks ago for my birthday and it came with a couple of group lessons. These lessons made my greatest fears that prevented me from trying seem mild. I’ve been following along albeit slowly with you and while I’m not breaking records I can play C and Em, it’s a process, and your kind delivery is so encouraging as you meet people like me where they are. I don’t want to play for anyone and my goals are really just to not regret never trying and I would like to just enjoy the journey. Thank you for your what you do. After my second paid for lesson I felt so defeated and was ready to sell the guitar. I still own it and more importantly I am utilising what you are sharing every day. Again thank you.

Hi Lauren. I got back into playing in Jan of 2022. I took 30 years off and I sure regret it now but surprisingly things are coming back faster than I thought considering my age 64 and now retired. I have 3 Ovation acoustics and one Gibson Les Paul. I don't sing, never played in a band and have never been on stage to play. So for me, it's just a hobby a self accomplishment issue. I enjoy it. You're the only instructor I have seen on You Tube that teaches things nice and slow from the start. I have yet to see anyone else. If I was to teach I would be just like you and making sure that people learn things correctly from the beginning. When I self taught myself in 1979 I held the pick wrong with 2 fingers and the thumb and never arched my wrist under the fret board. I have gone back to re-learn some songs that I learned from a teacher back in their 1980's. Black Bird is great and really not that hard to play. As you know you can look up one song on You Tube and you'll find 10 different ways to play it from 10 different teachers. I have seen most of your videos and watched some of them today. Your finger exercises are great and I still practice two that I learned from years ago. I quickly found last year that the better the teacher the faster they teach. They don't go over things thoroughly. They teach at their professional speed which is no good for beginners. So you'll wear out the batteries in your remote rewinding. Classical Gas is a real hand full to learn. I can't thank you enough for your teaching methods. I found you on You Tube by just clicking around. I look forward to seeing more of your videos. I love the one with putting four fingers on the G string and moving them one at a time. The ring finger as you mentioned is tough. Practice makes perfect. Thanks so much for all you do. Rick
Already subscribed to another app/system but I discovered you afterwards. I’ll likely give you a try. I liked this lesson and that you specialize in teaching us “not young” folks 😉
I am like a noob for this and came here without having any knowledge of the guitar so can u suggest something for my new journey!!!!!!!! Hoping for the reply coz u giving everyone
Lauren, I have a comment about the timing you were talking about. Instead of doing four strums, what I found helpful in the beginning was strumming once and using the rest of the count to build the next chord. I have a metronome app on my phone so I can speed up slowly. Just a thought.
Thank you so much for this lesson! I have one quick question though. When I am holding down the stings on the fretting board, It does not make a clear sound like yours in the video. Is there something wrong with my guitar?
Thanks for watching! It might not be your guitar. Few things to check. Make sure your fingers are close to the frets and press down firmly. Ensure your guitar is properly set up; the action might be too high. Use the tips of your fingers and avoid touching other strings. Keep practicing, and it should improve!
My first battle was switching between open D and open Em. No pivot. Then it was stretching just to play open C and open G. I started the pivots wherever I could, made several chord changes not battles. Open chords took me about 4 years to switch between all of them without missing a beat. By then barre chords, Bm and F, were more comfortable. I had to start the barre chords up the neck because I couldn't stretch that far yet. Cant solo like a pro, but it's too much fun to stop. At about 24 years in, I have 3 guitars, a bass, 2 Amps, 4 pedals. Next is an acoustic amp.
Should I have watched this two years ago when I picked up the guitar. Also you should teach us how to harmonically tune...I already know but not many do

The way you are teaching is outstanding, I like it.. I'm a beginner in what I learn yet just because of you. Thanks
Happy to hear that!
Of all the lessons I saw on TH-cam, Lauren is the best!
Aww thanks
You’re an excellent teacher and this was very helpful….Thanks Lauren
Glad it was helpful!
Wish I had the money I am impressed with her style
At 64 retired. I find myself really realizing I can actually learn to play. I've even made a ring finger I lost in my twenties. I'm no longer bored to death. Thank you your awesome awesome 👌 👏
You are welcome!
I am not a beginner. I have been playing since I was in the U.S Army back in 1975. I played in many bands too. But I still watch ur videos and love ur teaching. I only wish this was around back in the 70's. Would of been so much better at learning guitar. Keep up ur great teaching. Rocky Hamilton, Galveston ,Indiana. U go girl!!
That's awesome! Thanks so much for watching :D
Watching your videos i feel like a rock god already.... You explain it so well & detailed, not like some videos they say look u can play this song, but I'm not telling you the chords first !
Glad you like it!
How would a first lesson for an electric guitar differ from this?
Honestly William, not much different. You still have to learn the same chords. But I might start you with something like Smoke on the Water ;)
Good morning Ms. Lauren thank you so much for guiding us through our journey of guitar world
Have a blessed day 🙏🏽
You are so welcome!
This is great. All too often YT videos start out like this, then morph into Steve Vai imitations. Thank you for your patience.
Thanks for watching!
Just got my new guitar yesterday and I want to get back in playing again 😊
Awesome!
@@LaurenBateman I like your three notes on the first ring. In your video
I love your videos! I am 41 and finally have time to pick up a guitar 🎸. I have an acoustic and love every bit of your vidoes. I am a subscriber! Thank you for your time. Your amazing 😮👌😌👍🥰

Sure is. Keep practicing. You will get it!
Lauren.... this is what I like too do.... just noodle around on the guitar .. than sometimes things seem to come together
Thanks for watching!
Ok thank you😳
No problem 😊
Rick
Really glad to hear that! Thank you for sharing you story. Looking forward to your journey :D
Thanks!
Thank you so much Peter for your super thanks!!!
Already subscribed to another app/system but I discovered you afterwards. I’ll likely give you a try. I liked this lesson and that you specialize in teaching us “not young” folks 😉
Thank you for watching and keep playing
Thanks!
Teresa from Scotland. Thank you so much. Very kind of you. I was in Scotland earlier this year. You have a beautiful country.
Waiting impatiently for my gutar to be delivered this arvo. Cant wait. Excited 64 yr young.
Thanks for watching!
You are amazing, God bless you, thank you for your patience, thank you for teaching us, thank you for the bottom of my heart ❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much!

Lauren, I have a comment about the timing you were talking about. Instead of doing four strums, what I found helpful in the beginning was strumming once and using the rest of the count to build the next chord. I have a metronome app on my phone so I can speed up slowly. Just a thought.
Thanks for sharing!!
The best teacher out here in TH-cam land.
Thank you so much!
You got this!
Should I have watched this two years ago when I picked up the guitar. Also you should teach us how to harmonically tune...I already know but not many do
Thanks for watching!
Finger exercises why can't I get a sound from the string? Hopefully it's not a stupid question lol
Thanks for watching! This is ok, continue to exercise your fingers and placement of chords.
I put "1st lesson on acoustic guitar" in the search bar and the first video up has a woman wearing a Captain America shirt. I'm in lol
Thanks for watching!
Thanks
Any time
My fingers hurt when pressing the strings and I feel like I can't get my fingers correctly positioned 😢
Thanks for watching! take it slow, don't rush. You finger needs to develop callus. Also, you might need to have your guitar checked by a luthier
