That's so cool Phil - congratulations ! Not sure if anyone mentioned to you but if your guitar is coming from someplace that has much different current climate / weather than where you live it's a good idea to let it gently acclimate for a day or so before trying to play it... this is particularly important for acoustic guitars because the wood of the body / neck can really be influenced by changes in temp / humidity etc. It can be hard to wait that extra time but it will make your guitar happier !
So cool, Phil, congratulations! (One little tip: my first guitar had a high action (i.e. distance between the fretboard and the strings), which unnecessarily made playing more difficult. The action can be lowered easily, there are tutorials on TH-cam or take it to a guitar shop/luthier.) Best wishes and fun for your journey!

I am so thankful to have found your page. I’m 53 and have always wanted to learn how to play the guitar. Fear of not being very good and be laughed at held me back. Hopefully starting April 2024 the current chapter in my life will close with me being a warrior after a cancer diagnosis, surgery and months of chemo and radiation. Hello Lauren, Im 71 years old and have had learning to play guitar in my bucket list for a long time. Finally retired I have plenty of time. I just got my first acoustic guitar, have been searching TH-cam for lessons. I found you and have been following along with your short lessons. My right hand trembles a little bit so I don't thing I'll be a very good player. Im very enthusiastic and having a lot of fun Thanks for being such a great teacher. God bless..
Undeniably the best guitar teacher on youtube, thank you Lauren, I am shelving my hohner special 20 harp and taking up guitar, figure I can't miss eith you as a teacher 😊👍👍
Hi Lauren. I got back into playing in Jan of 2022. I took 30 years off and I sure regret it now but surprisingly things are coming back faster than I thought considering my age 64 and now retired. I have 3 Ovation acoustics and one Gibson Les Paul. I don't sing, never played in a band and have never been on stage to play. So for me, it's just a hobby a self accomplishment issue. I enjoy it. You're the only instructor I have seen on You Tube that teaches things nice and slow from the start. I have yet to see anyone else. If I was to teach I would be just like you and making sure that people learn things correctly from the beginning. When I self taught myself in 1979 I held the pick wrong with 2 fingers and the thumb and never arched my wrist under the fret board. I have gone back to re-learn some songs that I learned from a teacher back in their 1980's. Black Bird is great and really not that hard to play. As you know you can look up one song on You Tube and you'll find 10 different ways to play it from 10 different teachers. I have seen most of your videos and watched some of them today. Your finger exercises are great and I still practice two that I learned from years ago. I quickly found last year that the better the teacher the faster they teach. They don't go over things thoroughly. They teach at their professional speed which is no good for beginners. So you'll wear out the batteries in your remote rewinding. Classical Gas is a real hand full to learn. I can't thank you enough for your teaching methods. I found you on You Tube by just clicking around. I look forward to seeing more of your videos. I love the one with putting four fingers on the G string and moving them one at a time. The ring finger as you mentioned is tough. Practice makes perfect. Thanks so much for all you do. Rick
I am not a beginner. I have been playing since I was in the U.S Army back in 1975. I played in many bands too. But I still watch ur videos and love ur teaching. I only wish this was around back in the 70's. Would of been so much better at learning guitar. Keep up ur great teaching. Rocky Hamilton, Galveston ,Indiana. U go girl!!
At 64 retired. I find myself really realizing I can actually learn to play. I've even made a ring finger I lost in my twenties. I'm no longer bored to death. Thank you your awesome awesome 👌 👏
Hi Lauren, many thanks for your tuition, you have good clear diction and you make the subject easier to understand. This is really great for old timers like me at 73. I applaud you, thanks once again.
I've said it before, Lauren. I am so much more confident when picking up my guitar. Even when I go back to spider exercises, my fingers still fly around. But, I notice the dexterity improvement and I don't have to *stare* at the strings ahead of time. Next step: Close my eyes like YOU and *feel* the chord changes. 🎸
Hi Lauren, your name Bateman sounds Dutch, I am Dutch living in Guadeloupe, am 76 years of age, beside playing drums and Percussion I bought myself a classical guitar and want to learn playing guitar wich i did when I was very young. So iI will follow your lessons for old folks.

Another wonderful master class. What is even better is you get to learn two songs while practising with this video for a beginner. This makes practiceing your guitar more enjoyable. Lauren continues to explain the guitar with great visuals. Maybe a few more practice chords video that includes an exercise where you’ll learn a song at the same time
I just started the 7 step course and i must say it,s worth the price.Laura has to be the most laid back on line teacher going. With that kind of demeanor it makes learning fun.I don't feel rushed and can enjoy what i am practicing with her pdf. In fact i plan on getting her fingerpicking course as well.
Watching your videos i feel like a rock god already.... You explain it so well & detailed, not like some videos they say look u can play this song, but I'm not telling you the chords first !
Hi Lauren! It's Ruth whose guitar instructor is Brian May. I fractured my upper left arm a month ago so I'm unable to play my guitar now. Hopefully my arm heals fast. It's hard for me to see my guitar sitting there. Brian May did something awesome for me. He knew I took piano when I was a little girl and I regret to this day quiting. Brian texted me 3 days ago and said there is a free Keyboard for me at Studio Arts. I was so touched. I can still play music right hand only but I'm having fun.
Had a bit of difficulty after wrist and elbow surgery (gonna be fretting with scar tissue at a certain point!), but I have a meeting this weekend to have a luthier do set ups on my parlor guitar and my electric guitar (gonna wait and do bass later-- was so bored, and I wanna start on the one that will give me the best foundation of knowledge, AND I just want to have fun!) I said when I was ready, I'd be looking into Lauren because she just seems amazing, explains things well, is patient, and just seems to understand us older students better.
I saw Leo Kotke in concert in the mid 70's. He broke a string and told us a story as he was putting the new string on. He said his friend and mentor John Fahey was at event Leo was playing at came back stage after leo played and the first thing he said was 'cut your fingernails your notes were buzzing' . That lesson has stuck with me for 50 years now. Long finger nails will prevent you from pressing the string to the fret properly. Kotke
I’ve been practicing tirelessly at least two hours a day minimum to learn guitar for the past year and a half and just not progressing sufficiently. Going back to the basics starting with this video hoping to get somewhere this time around. Super interested in your lessons!
Most people 'play' guitar VS 'practice' guitar. It's really focusing in on the fundamentals that make music that helps most. Chord changes, finger dexterity, strumming. Get those down and you will be awesome.
Just retired, 64, now I want to pick up where I left off from guitar lessons in 1977, which is from the very beginning. You have a lot of beginner videos. Which is the first one I should start with? I'm excited, but I want to start off right. I've been to your website and I'm willing to get going.
My first battle was switching between open D and open Em. No pivot. Then it was stretching just to play open C and open G. I started the pivots wherever I could, made several chord changes not battles. Open chords took me about 4 years to switch between all of them without missing a beat. By then barre chords, Bm and F, were more comfortable. I had to start the barre chords up the neck because I couldn't stretch that far yet. Cant solo like a pro, but it's too much fun to stop. At about 24 years in, I have 3 guitars, a bass, 2 Amps, 4 pedals. Next is an acoustic amp.
I’ve been playing guitar for years but there’s always more to learn. You just showed me in this beginner lesson. I think if a vote was taken of the best acoustic guitar teacher you would be No. 1. Excellent Teaching😊😊😊
Hey Lauren, I am almost ready to sign up for your classes. I went all out and bought both an acoustic and an electric guitar. I am 64; never played before and I am always going to the electric since it is so much easier. I wonder should I go back to the acoustic or keep going on the electric.
Great question. If you love the electric, go with that. I think it's important to practice both, but even myself, I mostly play acoustic even though I do play electrics as well.
Hi Lauren 52 year old from UK. I watch mainly 3 (Utube) acoustic teachers. I love your tutorials u make it so easy to learn. I've been (playing) for over a year now and have a bad habit of just learning a few bars from songs I like but my main problem is switching between chords without stopping any tips to help with this would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Danny, yep, that's a problem for many students. In my course, I really focus on chord changes. There are tons of videos to play along with me. M y biggest recommendation is to take two chords at a time and practice going back and forth back and forth over and over again. It takes a lot of repetition.
Lauren, I have a comment about the timing you were talking about. Instead of doing four strums, what I found helpful in the beginning was strumming once and using the rest of the count to build the next chord. I have a metronome app on my phone so I can speed up slowly. Just a thought.
You are very good teacher. Thank you. I am 64 and my fingers very eat up with arthritis and can really hard to make the chords. Any ideas cuz I love guitar, drums, I am working om the djembe . thak you
You can do it! You will have good days and bad days but my recommendation would be to keep the chord shaprs simple. You may never be able to play barre chords, but that's OK. You can still have a lot of fun. Search Lauren Bateman stuck like glue chords. You might find those helpful.
Hello..I am based I'm India and have just subscribed your channel as I liked the first lesson very much. However I have gew queries if you can please answer them: 1. Are these lessons same for playing electric guitar? 2. Is it compulsory to use a pick for playing electric guitar. 3. I have small hands so the lessons that you have uploaded will that help me in the learning process. 4. I am about to buy my first electric guitar as the Yamaha Pacifica 112V. Do you think that's a good guitar to buy.
Hi Laura, congratulations for your award in Business and thank you for this free guittar lessons. I am not sure where to strike. Is it on the string where my other finger presses down or its all the 6 strings?
@@LaurenBateman Thanks alot. Been striking all 6 strings. How then, if I have fingers on 5th and 2nd strings? Sometimes I see people striking through all 6.
Hi Lauren Bateman. I've been watching your videos for the last month. I also seen one of your live shows couple weeks ago. I'm Michael from Kentucky. I always wanted to play. And watching you has made it so simple. I've started with this video. And I'm catching on pretty quick. I know you talked about the fat fingers. I'm using the tip of my fingers and I got the calluses going there. But do they have some kind of little straps that will go around the top of your fingers because when I do push down on the strings it makes my fingers push out and barely barely touching the other string always getting this little blah. I have skinny fingers. But when I push down on the string it makes that puff out. Now if I don't push down on the string hard enough I I get the blah. Love the way you teach. One video at a time
One video at a time. That will sort itself out with more experience. Right now, your fingers will mush a lot. But you will figure what works best for you and your finger shape.
Quick question: If chords are named based on the first note played, why is the 2-finger "C" chord a "C" and not an "E" ? Just wondering. Great lesson. Thanks!
I would start with chords and strumming first. Add fingerpicking once you get some more control and dexterity. Fingerpicking doesn’t sound very good when your chords are muted. That’s exactly what I show people in my course.
This is great. I am a beginner and I think I can learn a lot from you. Question, why is the diagram showing the six string opposite from the guitar? I am placing all you lessons on my computer so I don’t miss a lesson. Thank you so much. Robert from Texas
Listen to every word this woman says and I guarantee you will get better. Practice often and when you have that light bulb moment, please donate to her!
Hi, I'm a 61 yr old veteran. I have been wanting to learn guitar for a long time. I finally was able to get one. My problem is I have a hard time staying focused on things. I'm struggling with the fret and string diagram, because it's up and down, instead of the way I'm holding my guitar. Do you have diagrams that show's it the way I'm holding it?? It's confusing for me. I do love the way you teach. I've been working on a Horse with no name.
Another great advice video! I have tried over and over and over on the d chord but my dang long big fingers just won't fit correctly on the E and B strings. So, I'm barring or playing the 2 strings with one finger in the 3rd fret and the d chord with just 2 fingers. I've found the sound is very similar at least until I figure out how to fit my fingers correctly.
Already subscribed to another app/system but I discovered you afterwards. I’ll likely give you a try. I liked this lesson and that you specialize in teaching us “not young” folks 😉

Bought the seven level before Christmas playing the easy cords on Level 2 at the moment. A very good course.
Excellent!
Great stuff. Nice lesson.
Thank you Lauren excellent class
Thanks for watching!
Thank you...
You are welcome!
Phenomenal Lauren!
Thank you Donald.
y biggest recommendation is to take two chords at a time and practice going back and forth back and forth over and over again. It takes a lot of repetition.
Thanks
merci ma belle lauren de nous montrer ca gratuitement et avec patience
Never done this exercise before, that third finger is a killer
Sure is. Keep practicing. You will get it!
Lauren, I have a comment about the timing you were talking about. Instead of doing four strums, what I found helpful in the beginning was strumming once and using the rest of the count to build the next chord. I have a metronome app on my phone so I can speed up slowly. Just a thought.
Thanks for sharing!!
However I have gew queries if you can please answer them:
Hi Saman, I recommend my free crash course. It will answer those questions:

Hi Laura, congratulations for your award in Business and thank you for this free guittar lessons. I am not sure where to strike. Is it on the string where my other finger presses down or its all the 6 strings?
The string where you finger is
@@LaurenBateman Thanks alot. Been striking all 6 strings. How then, if I have fingers on 5th and 2nd strings? Sometimes I see people striking through all 6.
Waw,nice lesson
This lady is cool af
Hi Lauren, just watched your finger exercise, you could call it the spider pentatonic 😉 from your first lesson must see.
Yes!
Quick question: If chords are named based on the first note played, why is the 2-finger "C" chord a "C" and not an "E" ? Just wondering. Great lesson. Thanks!
The two fingered c chord would be w C/E chord. It's an inversion.
Bravo
Fantastic! Just starting to learn and enjoying these videos
Welcome aboard!
Thanks!
Teresa from Scotland. Thank you so much. Very kind of you. I was in Scotland earlier this year. You have a beautiful country.
Looking to begin taking acoustic lessons (at 65), but trying to understand whether I should be learning chords/strumming or fingerpicking styles.
I'd say, whatever attracts you must.
That’s how whoever created the diagrams made it. The high notes are on the top. The low notes are on the bottom.
Thanks
Easy lesson

@@LaurenBateman I’m a newbie (69) so you make it easy for me to learn.
Unfortunately, all notation is written in the standard TAB format. I know, it's a little upside down from what you would think.
Hey Lauren, is this beginner lesson that different from the other first lesson for beginners, I left my first comment in that lesson?
It's similar yes. I answered your question on that video.
Hey! I like your teaching style...do you teach electric guitar or mostly acoustic?
I teach both, but this channel is mainly acoustic.
Loved this!!!
After just 2 weeks I have nailed the Em cord! Nothing to this guitar stuff.😳
You got it!!!!!!
That's great! I'm really glad it helped. Thanks so much for watching :D
Lauren I have a stupid question. Is a Walmart guitar any good. It kind of looks like yours. Cuz I'm wondering about string clarity
It is probably not the greatest.
Already subscribed to another app/system but I discovered you afterwards. I’ll likely give you a try. I liked this lesson and that you specialize in teaching us “not young” folks 😉
Thank you for watching and keep playing
