    • @IELTSJacky
      @IELTSJacky  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that's fine, Anish. Try to keep the two main body paragraphs roughly the same length so, if you give a long explanation for main body paragraph 1, aim to do the same for main body paragraph 2.

    Thanks for the great video.
    Based on band 7 task response, the essay should "present a clear position throughout the response" but in your essay there is no mention of your position in the body paragraphs.
    Please do explain.

    • @IELTSJacky
      @IELTSJacky  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Hossein,
      I’m glad you like the video.
      First and foremost, you must answer the specific question being asked. This particular question asks the candidate to ‘Discuss both views and give your opinion’. The sample essay does exactly that - main body paragraph 1 discusses one view, main body paragraph 2 discusses the other view, the conclusion summarises the main ideas and gives the writer’s opinion.
      I hope this helps your understanding.

    • @hosseinzeinalifard3454
      @hosseinzeinalifard3454 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@IELTSJacky I understand the structure of your essay; that's not my question though. Isn't it essential to present your position in the body of the essay as well as in the introduction and conclusion?

    • @IELTSJacky
      @IELTSJacky  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hosseinzeinalifard3454 No, it isn’t essential. Use the marking criteria as a guide. I think this particular criteria is confusing to students and it actually contradicts the similar criteria for level’s 8 & 9 which state that you must present a fully developed position in response or answer to the question. As I said before, first and foremost, you must answer the specific question being asked. That is what will gain you the marks.
      To keep presenting your position in each part of the essay will create a very messy essay that does not, in the case of the question we are talking about, meet the marking criteria.

  • @Drdongyong
    @Drdongyong 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thank you Jacky for this great video. I have a question though, do I have to pick a side when I write discussion essay? Is it ok if I say I agree with both sides? Thank you!

    • @IELTSJacky
      @IELTSJacky  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Discussion essays will almost always ask you to discuss both sides of the argument and give your opinion. You must give your opinion if asked for it or your will get a low score for task achievement.
      Best regards, Jacky

    First of all i would like to thank you for your expanded explanation. And it was really helpful for me to understand the structure.
    I have one question in the example part of main body 1 you used
    "Today, a third of wild golden lion tamarins were raised in captivity"
    Shouldn't we actually use "are" instead of "were" as there is a word Today?

    Dear professor, besides "on the one hand" and "on the other hand" what other cohesive devices are suggested in IELTS to show the opposite ideas ?

    • @IELTSJacky
      @IELTSJacky  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have included two lessons on cohesive devices in my Ultimate IELTS Grammar Course:
      Lesson 44 - Linking Ideas 1 - Connecting Words
      Lesson 45 - Linking Ideas 2 - Contrasting Two Ideas
      You will find all the information you need here.
      The course is only $5.99 for a month’s access so you may feel that it is well worth purchasing even if you only need these two lessons.
      You can find out more about the course via the ‘Ebooks & Courses’ tab in the top menu of my website www.IELTSJacky.com. The URL is: www.ieltsjacky.com/ielts-products.html

    If the question is like. Discuss both views. then do we need to add opinion? I'm not sure as different channels are including opinion even if they don't ask

    • @IELTSJacky
      @IELTSJacky  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Discussion essay questions usually ask you to give your opinion. Choose one view and make sure that your opinion is clear throughout the essay.
      Occasionally, a question will come up where it does not ask for an opinion in which case you shouldn’t give one.
      If you are ever unsure about how to answer a question, analyse it and work out exactly what you are being asked to do. See the lessons on question analysis on my website www.ieltsjacky.com. There are also video versions of the lessons posted on the pages.
      I hope this helps, Nishant.

    Hello. I don't quite understand the difference between advantages and disadvantages and opinion essay. This is a opinion essay but the first paragraph talks about the advantages and second one talks about the disadvantages and there is a opinion at the last. I could see that the same has been followed while writing advantages and disadvantages essay. Should we provide evidence and talk positively about the view that we don't agree with?

    I just want to ask isn't better to write my opinion in the main paragraph too? And not only in the introduction and conclusion. I saw some make three paragraphs first two general ideas and then the third they write their opinion. So which way better?

    • @IELTSJacky
      @IELTSJacky  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mohammad. Apologies for my late reply. I didn’t receive notification of your post and have only just spotted it.
      The essay structure that I recommend is not the only one you can use but it is simple and will get you a high score. I suggest that you practise using both structures and see which one works best for you. I would also add that sometimes a particular question will fit one structure better than another which is why I always say that you should use the structure only as a guide.
      I hope this is helpful. Jacky

    • @IELTSJacky
      @IELTSJacky  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      'This essay will discuss both views...' is fine to use when appropriate. 'This essay says that ...' would not be correct to use. To 'say' something is to express it in the spoken word. You could write, 'this essay will state that...' I hope this is helpful.

    • @IELTSJacky
      @IELTSJacky  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for your positive comment and your question.
      I feel that I have restated my opinion clearly in the conclusion. Here are the introduction and the conclusion.
      Introduction: I believe that the poor conditions that many animals held in captivity are kept in make the existence of zoos unacceptable.
      Conclusion: In conclusion, although zoos do help to safeguard dwindling populations of particular species, the suffering experienced by many captive creatures due to unsuitable living conditions amounts to cruelty and they should not be allowed to exist.

      Hi Maggie,
      If you expand on each idea with an explanation and example, you should reach the minimum word limit quite easily. Developing your ideas is very important. However, if you are really struggling to meet the word limit and can write about two ideas for each view in the time allowed, that’s fine.

    Where is your opinion myam?
    Its too confusing,what are differences in " disscuss both side only" and " discuss both + your opinion"

      I have never seen a question that says, "discuss both side only". "Both" and "only" mean the opposite so this phrase doesn't make sense and it is grammatically incorrect.

      This is a discussion essay where you are require to ‘Discuss both view and give your opinion’.
      Each of the two main paragraphs discusses one side of the argument and the writer’s opinion, that zoos should not be allowed to exist, is given in the conclusion.

    Where is your opinion sentence in conclusion ????

    • @IELTSJacky

      This is the opinion I state in the conclusion:
      ....the suffering experienced by many captive creatures due to unsuitable living conditions amounts to cruelty and they (zoos) should not be allowed to exist.

      and they should not allow to exist - is implicitly indicating the opinion

    I feel the introduction and the conclusion are opposite. The introduction support the zoo, but the conclusion does not support the zoo. Am I right?

      Hi Sokleng,
      Both the introduction and the conclusion state the same opinion. Here they are together:
      I believe that the poor conditions that many animals held in captivity are kept in make the existence of zoos unacceptable.
      …the suffering experienced by many captive creatures due to unsuitable living conditions amounts to cruelty and they should not be allowed to exist.
      Unacceptable means that something is not satisfactory or should not be allowed.
      I hope this helps.

    Do we really have to extend both views? In other examples I have seen they just write about one view and provide 2 topic sentances-explanation and example.
