Huawei's Pura-70 is nearly "a symbol of self-sufficiency": teardown reveals more Chinese-built parts

  • An expert teardown of Huawei's Pura-70 reveals even more key components built by Mainland China suppliers.
It revealed big strides in flash memory, provided by Huawei's in-house unit, HiSilicon. The wafer design is novel, and also suggests a new, previously unknown domestic supplier.
Other Chinese-sourced parts include audio amplifier and LED flash driver. HiSilicon also contributed the Wifi and Bluetooth systems, and the power management chips.

There's a perfectly good explanation why Huawei continues to use some foreign parts even though there are Chinese alternatives. If you use Chinese products just because they are Chinese, it will make the Chinese suppliers complacent and stop improving and innovating. This is also why China does not ban Apple and Tesla, even though America bans Huawei and Chinese electric cars. This is something American policy makers cannot grasp, and the result is that Apple, and Tesla to a lesser extent, have become mediocre companies unable to produce competitive products.

Is it "comfortable" for a totally non-English speaking foreigner from say, the Congo, to live in New York City without being able to speak or understand a word of English?
It will certainly help if one is to know a few words of mandarin while in China - but it also depends upon WHERE in China. If you are in the Tier 1 cities like Beijing and Shanghai and living close to the universities and colleges, there are a number of young Chinese who are multi-lingual including English and you can get by. A number of public transport places have multi-languages as well, including English - to assist tourists and foreign visitors. Going out into the rural areas will be a different matter but this is similar to any other country including the U.S. and Australia.
You can also make use of Google language translation apps in your smartphone or get an inexpensive language translators that will speak the words for you in mandarin that the locals can understand.
Above all, one has to have the following - (a) an open mind, (b) a willingness to learn, (c) friendliness to all, (d) guts.

@@nessim.liamani No problems. We have here in Australia, a multi-cultural country, many enclaves of specific people who came here as refugees. Despite several charitable organizations running free "ESL" - English as a Second Language - courses, many of those migrants simply refuses to join in to learn even the most basic of survival English and prefer to stick inside their own "ghettoes". A similar thing happened in the U.S. too - during the wave of migrants from Italy and Greece. In fact, some of the older generation of migrants or refugees, despite being in the country for 20 - 30 - 40 years, still don't know a word of the local language except maybe, "Yes" and "No". The thing is, they survived.
A similar situation exists in parts of China.
The more developed and modernized cities will have a larger number of younger people being multi-lingual with English being the second language of choice as this is being taught in schools and universities as a means to the modern world of business, science and technology. The older generation, unless you meet someone from the really old years when the country was over-run by Western foreigners, will most likely, not be able to converse in English.
Up in places like Harbin in Northern China close to the Russian border, you may come across more people able to speak Russia while down in Tsingtao, a former German-held concession, you may come across some German speaking locals.
China is a very diverse country as you can imagine. The British were of greater influence in cities like Shanghai, Beijing (due to the former diplomats and their families there back in the 1800s) and of course, Hong Kong. If you went to say, Macau, Spanish and Portuguese would probably be more understood there with a smattering of English.
There is a young Australian lady by the name of Amy Lyons with a You Tube site called, "Blondie in China". She is very fluent in Chinese Mandarin ("putonghua" - the common language) and has an extremely open mind to all things weird and unusual. She demonstrates how someone can experience a wonderful life in China (she doesn't live there as a permanent but travels there very often from Sydney, Australia). if they are to know just a few words of Chinese. The locals are very eager to help foreigners get around because they understand the situation of a stranger whom they view as a "guest" to their country.
So, going back to your original question, "Is it comfortable" to live in China if you don't know the language?" the answer is obvious - it all depends upon each individual, how open minded they are, how acceptable they are of things they have never encountered before and may even seem to be disgusting and how friendly they are to the locals. There is an African American in China who also features a You Tube video of his travels and experiences. He knows basically nothing of the Chinese language except a few words of common greeting like "how are you" ("nee how mar"), "see you again" ("joy keen") and "thank you" ("tseah-tseah"). However, he has joined in with the locals dances in the streets, pointed at pictures of what he wants to eat (their menus are full of photos of the meals), etc (there are western restaurants in the main cities - KFC, Burger King, McDonalds, Pizza Hit, etc - you won't starve, that's for sure) and due to his outgoing nature, he is accepted everywhere he goes (see "Willene Business & Lifestyle").
By the way, I am not conversant in Chinese at all. I have visited places like Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Shanghai in the past even before China is as developed as it is today and managed to get by back 35 years ago. Both Taipei (Taiwan) and Shanghai were eye openers while Hong Kong is, well, a former British enclave (although a large number of local Chines don;'t speak English or very well at all while local Cantonese dialect is more common).
How comfortable anyone is in any place on this planet is entirely up to that person in the final analysis. You can be in your own country and not be comfortable and there are many in this same boat. Anyway, enough philosophizing. I wish you the very best in all your endeavors and may you find excitement and enchantment everywhere you go.

PLS COMMENT ON HUAWEI'S LITHOGRAPHY AND CHINA'S CHIP FUTURE. TH-cam tells me Huawei are already producing the all-important 5nm lithography machine, and will start producing a 3nm by EOY. My prediction was/remains when the US started trying to restrict China chips, that China chips will be equal to the US and Taiwan in 3/4 years and ahead and starting to dominate the world market by 2030 - when the chips will really hit the fan. If the US loses on chips, it arguably loses period. And all because the US forced China to self-sufficiency. If I were there in their position dealing with the crazy geriatric leaders of a geriatric empire, I'd go hell for leather for chip sufficiency too - it's a matter of survival. And soon it will be a matter of US survival. Pls present your opinion on the future chip prospects here.

Without profit incentives, no western countries would have put their money in China's banks. Also, at the start, most western equipment or machineries that were installed in Chinese factories were due to be scrapped in their own countries soon. They were producing products that belonged to much older generations.
