      Another thought.... it's possible that staring is just out of human curiosity..... I'm African and when I was a child and saw random white people I stared. 🤷‍♀️
      I don't mind as long as ppl aren't being mean to me, but that's just me. I remember going to Romania and I mean I could have been a celebrity... I got random ppl sneaking pics and coming up to talk to me and some old ladies wanting to hug me. It was harmless though. They don't see ppl that look like me so I get it. I think sometimes we remember the horrible histories from these places where we have been subjugated and so naturally recoil at any curious attention from ppl who have had minimal interaction with black ppl.
      Only my opinion though.

    She fits into a lot of East/Southeast Asian beauty standards still. Thin, tall, long dark hair etc. So really other than having brown skin, for being a non-white biracial foreigner in korea even though I'm sure she still faces her fair share of discrimination she's probably more "palatable" for them.

      Was just gonna say this too! I don't doubt for a second that she faces discrimination while there, but Korea has many many beauty standards, other than just having fair skin. She fits into many of their beauty standards, for example: Being skinny and having straight hair. I'm not saying she shouldn't be allowed to talk about her experience, but just a heads-up for people who are bigger and/or darker than her.

      Example: not that big, not that dark skin, not that short etc...
      And I just think that in 2022, it's still the case. Not a lot of variety have been brought compared to before, it's pretty much the same,such a shame...

    It Is unfortunate, but there are still lot of prejudice/racism in Korea. Ok. Let me rephrase that. They have issues with Blasian couples. They're all good with the Caucasians. But, it wasn't always this way either. Over the years, it's become the norm so it's not a big deal anymore and is accepted.
    So my hope is that one day Blasian couples will also be the norm. That ONE day... ALL love will be seen as just that.

    • @mariamoutro1573
      @mariamoutro1573 4 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      it is the same for sure and the way koreans translate the term "educate themselves" instead of the actual meaning of them learning about something they don't know they see it more of the person thinking theyre above them and telling them what to do (which is a major mistranslation) but thats what it translates that led to a worse backlash for him which is sad since he knows more than they ever will on this topic so i will learn to phrase my sentences and opinions better :)

    • @뚱록
      @뚱록 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      As a korean living aboard, i agree that koreans need more racial education and needs more diversity.
      However the Sam okyere situation was because how he handled it. The boys on the photo that he pointed at were not educated. And most koreans dont know why painting black is being racist. But instead of actually telling historical meaning behind and telling why not to do so, he just blamed entire korea and the boys and called us ignorant.(yes its pretty much true but no one wants to be called like that) And wrote different meaning in English.(which bothered ppl) Ppl were like ‘hey, dont be too mean, they were and we were ignorant. Just be more nicer’ But then someone found him pulling his eyes (the racial slur for asians) in a program. So now they were like ‘hey, even u used racial slur but you treat us like ignorant, stupid ppl??’ I mean deporting and stuff is too much but considering how toxic we r towards celebs, its not really about racism.

      @eveeve8106 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@뚱록 I understand your point of view, if someone from my country or people in my country are being racist I will for sure not like it and probably partially defend the person/people from my country. I know it hurts when your people are seen as such but let us call a spade a spade. What he did was not mean, you should also understand that he was hurt and that could have triggered his choice of words and so my whole point is do not tell people how to react in any way or form after you hurt them because honestly you asked for it. I watched that program where there was an episode where they had to show their ugly faces which was not related to being racist to Asians at all. Imagine him being racist on TV in Korea and Koreans let it slide. No way!!! It is like they always say they do not know better but when caught in the act they do not want to accept their mistakes and learn from it rather they are finding ways to blame the other person and make them look bad too. Some way I am glad this happened because it really showed once again the standpoint of some Korean Netitzens.

    When she said culture is important and you don't want to loose that at 5:34, I was thinking to myself, why would you even bother to potentially marry someone outside of your culture if it's important? It's goes against anything she just spoke about earlier in the interview...

    I know she is a person of color (POC) obviously, however, im skeptical on if she's black as in African African-American. Just because your skin tone is a dark shade doesn't mean its correct to call that individual "black". If she IS south Asian then there would be no need to put AMBW. Both are Asian. In parts of south Asia there are very dark toned persons as their are fair toned persons however they still belong to the same community. Just as Africans/African Americas "Black" community have various tones. That aside, i wish them the very best future together.

    FOR EVERYONE IN THE COMMENTS: I’ve done some research and I believe mariamoutro is the women in the video(based on the comments). If so she is Filipino and Somalian which means that she is MOST LIKELY of Cushitic origin. When people think of "Black" they are typically referring to people of Bantu origin. I’m not saying she’s not black but people of this origin have been know to distinguish themselves from the Bantu. So there’s a lot of debate as to whether or not they should even be considered black. Similar to how Egyptians aren’t considered to be black sometimes. However, I could be incorrect so please do your own research. Also feel free to correct me if I’m wrong. :)

    • @amerigovespucci1869
      @amerigovespucci1869 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      *The only reason I’m pointing this out is because of the phenotypical difference. Which plays a role on how these groups are viewed in society. For example, a person of Cushitic origin is far less likely to experience discrimination than someone of Bantu origin. Due to the overall difference in skin color, hair texture, and facial features.*

      Western media isn't really interested in journalism about other countries or knowing about what the issues there are their lens is rooted in colonial streotypes and agenda is basically catering to more or less neo colonial intresets and maintaining the status quo. Let me give an example as an indian very few people in India actually know English less than 5 % of print media is in eng but western media( bbc nyt etc. Etc.) don't have correspondents here that even know indian languages their reporting is completely based of a few English speaking that to mentally colonized elite and english opinion pieces that toe their line. It doesn't suprises me to find completely away from reality factually incorrect stuff in these outlets anymore and rehtoric is completely based on colonial tropes that they keep regurgitating and some other tryn to fit indian issues in western paradigms despite of completely different history socio political scenario etc. so while westerners may claim how others are not " educated" about world issues and they are, the reality is they not only not educated but to the minus fed with stupid propoganda that ultimately benifits imperial and neo colonial intresets. Now coming to Korea in my experience even if people might not know much about your country and culture they atleast are quite open to learning not Supremacist or condescending in anyway they don't try to take your agency away and claim they know better than you about you and your culture history etc. not being aware is much better than being ignorant and biased in your knowing and still thinking you know the best. Yes there are some problems in Korea but it's nowhere that bad as being portrayed even the older people and I can attest I had positive experiences.

I wondered what if I don't know anyone there and nobody likes me? Some of my family thinks I should but some don't. I want to think that this is what I want but the thing that is helping me tell myself that I want to is telling myself "I'm only 13 so maybe when I grow up Koreans will have a more open mindset to foreigners. Going to any foreign country minus the one you originally come from normally will have it's up and down. People are not going to open their arms so casually nor should you accept open arms gracefully from anyone just easily. Remember, the majority in that country, in this case Korea, is Koreans, that's a fact, it will take probably years for them to fully accept different nationalities, as it is not the norm there nor should we think it is. But regardless of this, if it is a country you want to visit, go for it, when the time is right, most times regardless of people's skin color it's the personality is what people are attracted too.
