Creating a Round Slab Cup with a Darted Squared Base From a Textured Slab with a Focal Accent

  • This video was originally made to help my Ceramics II students on their Textured Slab Set with Focal Accent Project. In the video, I demonstrate how to roll and texture a slab, and create a cylinder with a squared darted bottom. I used a piece of craft foam from which I cut my feather focal accent, and I used an MKM wooden roller to create my repeated texture in the background. I also demonstrate how to create a handle with the same texture as on the cup. For another slab cup video, check out my video on "How to make a Tripod Textured Slab Cup!" See link: • How to make a Tripod T...
    The clay I am using in the video is Laguna B-mix with grog- cone 5/6. I use Coyote glazes which enhance texture.

    And, because I had a question about how to MAKE the acetate dart I show, here is an explanation of that! It started just as a scrap of paper which I folded vertically, then, I cut two angled cuts to create a "diamond" shape. (I made the long side the dart, and the shorter side the handle to hold it...) Then, I opened it up, and drew a vertical line along the fold. This vertical line on the fold is what you align with the marks you make on the cup. And, just to give me some flexibility, I made a few straight horizontal lines. That gives you options of lining up the lines with the edge of the bottom... therefore making darts which are longer or shorter depending on the look you want. The reason I have mine is on acetate is so it will last, and kids can use it over and over in my classroom. You could take a clear or translucent tub lid and cut one if you want something durable. I like having the see through quality, so I can match up the lines and the edge with the horizontal lines. I use darts like that of lots of different sizes and angles when I handbuild. I find it helps me to be consistent when I make darts or cuts! Here is a link to some photos with measurements of the darts I use: drive.google.com/drive/folder...

      @KaransPotsAndGlass  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I Naomi- I replied on the other video as well... but my primary recommendation is to make sure it is really well ribbed and compressed on the surface prior to texturing! :) It could be your clay which is less forgiving too, just in case... make sure you have a nice plastic clay body... :)

  • @louybee
    @louybee 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Very nice directions!!! Had 2 minor thoughts: 1. since the clay rectangle will stretch when textured, why not lightly score the rectangle's edges, impress the texture & then cut out the rectangle to save time. 2. use a large plastic funnel (or a ball) at the very end to re-establish a perfectly round rim,...makes the cup look so much more professional & yet, still hand crafted! Thanks for a great demo, you're obviously a wonderful teacher!!!

    how do you keep your slab from cracking while bending??

    • @KaransPotsAndGlass
      @KaransPotsAndGlass  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Your clay needs to be plastic enough. If you are having trouble with it cracking, it may benefit from a bit more water. I have a video on how to recycle clay... but, if you cut a block into thin slabs, and wet the slabs down, put them back in the bag to sit, you may find it is soft enough after sitting overnight to remedy your problem. Also, make sure that you rib your slab after done rolling it!

    Really really nice mugs but i still don't quite understand how to make the foot ring?

    • @KaransPotsAndGlass
      @KaransPotsAndGlass  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sorry I rather skimmed through that part! I will try to make a video on just footrings soon... But, as an explanation, I roll a coil, then flatten it (with a matching texture) then slip and score it to the bottom. I blend the interior of it, sometimes adding a supplemental coil if needed... but just tidy up the outside with a brush as to not mess up my texture on it! :-) Karan

    • @KaransPotsAndGlass
      @KaransPotsAndGlass  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Renae- different clay bodies will have different shrink rates. You want to check with the manufacturer to see what a specific shrink rate is. So, if a clay has a 14% shrink rate, you can just estimate 14% more. Or, as I normally do... I just make my pattern generally "bigger" than I want my end result. If I am making sets, I just am sure to use the exact same pattern for all of them.

      Ranae- because I like the white color with my glazes... it is nice and reflective when I use the celedon (transparent) type glazes- and I like to sgraffito carve it too and like the higher contrast. It is more plastic to work with than porcelain, and a little more forgiving! I love the grogless version, but I have issues with warping when my pieces get larger, so I often just use the grogged version.

    What are the measurements for the darts you use?

      Hi Kim- in the video description, you will find a link to a Google FOLDER which has photographs of the darts so you can see them in detail! :) It is in the 3rd paragraph from the bottom!

    Will I need a kiln for this activity?

    • @KaransPotsAndGlass
      @KaransPotsAndGlass  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! Ceramic items which are functional must be fired in a kiln. You may want to look into classes at an art studio if you’re interested in beginning in ceramics!

    • @amandathomas4951

      KaransPotsAndGlass thank you!! Is there a cheap one you would recommend for a beginner?

    • @KaransPotsAndGlass
      @KaransPotsAndGlass  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Amanda- a kiln is a commitment ... if you want to purchase one, there are smaller ones which are great... and you can find used ones, I'm sure. I would imagine that if you look, you can find someone selling a used one. New kilns would be about a minimum of $1000 I would imagine. Just know though, a kiln requires a power source similar to an oven or a dryer... so you may have to have an electrician provide you with electrical hookup. That's why I often recommend for people to get their feet wet to see if they really like it by taking some classes at a studio or art center. Then, if you love it, set up your own home studio! :)

    Those cups are gorgeous, however, the outer seam being visible takes away from it. IMHO Was there a reason why you didn’t smooth them out?

    • @KaransPotsAndGlass
      @KaransPotsAndGlass  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes there is. To me when I make something slab built, I do not try to disguise the seams. I want them to “speak” the actual technique. I want the person who holds it to understand how it was made. Many ceramic artists have different approaches. This is my personal preference. :). Different strokes for different folks! :)

      Susan- here are some photos I took of the darts with measurements. The link will take you to photos in my Googledrive. drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B8o9XSZB7dN7M2h0WjYxV2R1V0k?usp=sharing

    • @KaransPotsAndGlass
      @KaransPotsAndGlass  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Sue-Ann, I did't measure that template... I just used a scrap piece of paper that I folded... you can use whatever size you like for a cylindrical pattern! Just allow a little extra size to allow for shrinking! :-)

      @KaransPotsAndGlass  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Katerina Patiniotis lol- that is true- but not the point of constructing with this method. :-). The idea behind using this method is to show off the hand built features you can emphasize. I recommend one of my videos on throwing cups if you are interested in learning more about wheel throwing!
