Mmm, maybe one with customizable drone(s). You know, kinda like ranger's pets but you actually "assemble" them from certain parts, giving them certain bonuses, abilities, etc.
As you said in your reply to me that the engi is not a god nor the magic guy, just a crafty clever one, I wanted an elite spec that had a magical weapon, like staff, scepter or focus, but it wouldn't be "magic", instead it would be crafted magic out of those weapons like engineered fire and electricity out of a staff, I bet they could make it different from elementalist and still awesome. I also wanted something with mecha parts, like improvements to the engineer body through prosthetics, that would give buffs and effects, maybe full mecha suit even or mechamancer summoning stuff. Everything points out that engi will be getting a mace, which at first seems a bit underwhelming as I don't generally like maces, but I hope they pull it off nicely, and I hope that if we get a mace it can work kind of like a flail, to be mid-range
As someone who main engineer I but also plays all other classes, I can understand why not many player seems to play this class. Core engineer is among the hardest class to master (arguably THE hardest class). You have to constantly switch between kits and weapons to use all the high damaging skill and then find some filler while you wait for your CD (usually by spamming grenade/bomb). Also you did not mention tool belt skill which is a major thing for engineer. Belt skill sometime offer a different effect than the "main skill", something you mostly notice when touching elixirs, and that effect plays a big part in why some skill are used (for instance the grenade barrage is one high damage burst you can use basically even 20ish second if memory serves). If someone wants to enjoy DPS engineer, that person will have to get used to ground targetting skill. Grenade and Mortar kit are very strong for both PVE and W vs W and both can only be use as ground target skill with a certain travel time on their projectile. Now about engineer spec, they are all strong but also much easier to play vs core engineer. Scrapper offer a lot of survivability and utility and holosmith offer high damage. I believe core engineer, in PVE, is only decent if you play as a condition DPS (and you really have to learn how to dodge) and berserk core engineer....You can make it work but it is way harder to survive and deal damage. Scrapper gives barrier when dealing damage and its gyro gives a lot of utility from CC to more barrier, Super Speed and Quickness. Holosmith gives you a lot of damage through the equivalent of a "Berserk" mode and while you have less survivability than a Scrapper, you still have a some in the form of heat cooling down that heals you (as well as some utility skills). Finally, the engineer class is the reason why I decided to stay on GW2. Engineer dont rely on magic like Elementalist, Necromancer, Mesmer and to a certain extend Guardian, but they arent like super strong and tanky fighters like Warrior. They dont rely on heroes from the past like Revenant, nor really have any particular talent in survival or "spirit communication" like Ranger. They arent as fast and agile as Thief. In GW2 you fight against magical being, dragons, present heroes or past heroes heck even gods themself, and Engineer can only rely on one thing to survive : their own creation. Playing Engineer in GW2 feels like you can take anything with only your own strenght and knowledge.
First, let me say thank you for this well thought out comment! I have only recently picked up engineer (about a month) and let me tell you the feelings you stated as far as not being some type of magical entity or channeling the spirits as it were, nope. you are just a mechanic who is taking on gods and dragons ha! What an amazing feeling! I actually feel like I have missed out on so much playing my firebrand for so long!. I will have to stop being so lazy and actually go to get my hero points for the scrapper/holosmith because I have loved core engineer, I can't wait to see what the elite specs are like. Again, thank you for the detailed thoughts on the engineer. I very much appreciate it!
lets not forget that at the start, core engi had a lot of bugs with its traits ,skills and weapons. It probably put a lot of people off from the class back then. It also just started to get specs that had less focus on piano playing... i mean kit swapping. (scrap and holo) Engi also shined more in pvp than it did pve. Though no matter what class i played, i always went back to my engi.
I love the Granade Kit but the way to play it is annoying sometimes clicking for each attack instead letting use the auto attack with some keybind configuration, so at some times I feel way more tired of simple attacking stuff with the Engi than the Elementalist (which is also hard), but has been relegating the Granades for other kits this days or simply mashing the Hammer from the Scrapper to get a lot more of fun and ease of use. I hope something can be done with the Granade Kit tho =(
I can list a couple of other things why that is engineer are one of the most played with class I feel by Anet. I mean by changing the core stuff like weapons how they work I main eng in the first couple of years when gw2 came out they anet had a hard time getting eng in line with the other class there where a couple of overpower builds that only used a couple of kits you only used like one or two eng was broken: I played what I called speed eng the idea was to keep swiftness up making you run 20% faster and using a lot of low cooldown skills with a pistol/pistol, pistol/shield, and movement kit skills like elixir gun using the f skills a lot like rocket boots give good amount burst and damage with just normal pistol damage you could hit like 3- 4.5k crit 5k with normal cond bleed, fire, poison max out a 750 to 1k damage each and some confusion hit with tool kit and pistol 4 skill it was like 9k damage with pistol 3 I have hit like 20k. with pistol/pistol the highest cooldown 20s was the glue shot 5 skills witch there was a skill you could lower the cooldown of all pistol skill by 20% you had so much control two good bursts damage and burst heals very good movement it was around the time when warrior could hit like 90k - 100k damage with there 2 skill hundred blades the state back then where a bit off so every class other than the ranger class could be broken in some way.( i remember a couple of time 5v1 in wvw with my eng)
It's also tied to thematic : people don't go into a high fantasy mmo to play with guns, rifles and grenades, they want to throw fireballs or bash things with a sword
Speak for yourself. Steam Punk fantasy is it's own thing. Not as popular as mainstream fantasy, but st8illa solid core following. Who doesn't like guns and mechanical machinations enhanced by magic?
The only gun fantasy I have in high fantasy world is deadeye. Big sniper on the back and two small gun on the hands. Unlucky me it's pretty bad in game 😂
Engineer main since Launch. Engi has a high skill ceiling but very high rewarding when you can pull off some of the most dank cheese combos in the game to wreck other players in WvW and PvP. No other class makes me smile more or gives me the satisfaction that Engi can perform and thats because everyone underestimates the class. Specially when they see a Core Rifle Engi and get fragged by the amount of dps and CC that can be pulled off. This class and this class alone was why I started playing Guild Wars 2 in the first place. The idea of a technical master mind that can go toe to toe with the most skilled magic users, the most brawny physical fighter, the most agile thief and everything in between is an amazing concept. To bring down demons, monsters and even elder dragons as a character that is on the same level as Batman or Ironman in gadgets and weaponry is 100% the class fantasy I have with it. Is it the perfect class? Absolutely not, there are flaws. Is it the perfect class for me. You bet 100% and i will never trade my engineer for anything else.
THANK YOU for putting it to words. when I first started I played ranger for the start I tried engineer for a solid month and I think I gave up to early on it. batman/ironman is the right statement. you fight gods and dragons as a smart savvy character. well said!
Holosmith aesthetics are weird, with that sword and shield he looks more like steampunk Roman legionary than an actual engineer. Scrapper, on the other hand, is really fun to play as healer and quickness provider, and his 15%damage-to-barrier conversion can be quite fun on high dps builds. Core engineer is junk, no questions asked. Literally the only profession i would actually ADVISE to boost rather than level up manually.
Ha... haha... (legit used the boost to get my engi to 80....) not me... The elite specs are my next target to play as/with. I really think scrapper will be my favorite! Thanks for your input!
Uhhh I think you got your Fractal meta wrong or very out of date. Its normally - Heal Firebrand and Alacrity Renegade + 3 DPS> I haven't seen a chronomancer or druid in t4+CM fractals in few years. You sure you didn't mean raiding?
The information which I pulled from metabattle (mainly because I haven't gotten in depth with fractals) suggested those professions as a high tier comp. If I may ask, where did you get your information from? Is it from just in game experience or from a site? I will admit when I am wrong!
Totally agree, current meta is HFB (sometimes quickness scrapper), alacrity renegade, and 3dps. scourge for 100cm and firebrand for the rest. Haven’t played with a ranger as support in forever, sometimes see dps ranger but even more rare than holo. Chronomancer just gets you kicked, mirage is viable tho. (Speak from personal experience from eu)
@@CaffeinatedDad Current fractal meta is definitely Heal Firebrand and Alacrity Renegade(speed clears sometimes use Alacrity Mirage and a Quickbrand). Bannerslave is still used for power comps but a lot of condition comps will forgo a BS for another dps Edit: 100% dropped you a like for that dad joke!!!
that's great info! again higher level fractals are not my strong suit so thank you so very much for the information! haha I'm glad I could make you laugh,
For fractal: Druid, Chrono, Bannerslave? what year is this? I thought the trinity Fractal now are Heal Firebrand, Alacren and Scg, plus 2 others which usually filled by condi firebrand/condi scg anyway
Yeah, standard pug comp for Fractals have been Alac Ren, Heal Firebrand, BS, 2x DPS for like 2 years now I think. (Alac Ren and Heal Firebrand were used in Fractals way earlier than in raids). Lately, since the patch that made condi deal 100% more DPS during broken breakbars while power only deals 30% now instead of the 50% bonus it had before, condi meta evolved though. So typical pug comp now is Alac Ren, Heal Firebrand and triple condi DPS. Holo is still pretty good in fractals, but condi is preferred now, especially since there are barely people playing BS anymore, because triple DPS, which costs you these precious banner buffs. But this also means you have one more spot for the DPS role, which makes it easier to join as Holo I guess, but also harder because condi meta. Metabattle is usually "a bit" late on updating fractal or raid related stuff. :D Wouldn't trust on them for these kind of information, rather check Snowcrows and Discretize for that.
At tier 4 fractals chronomancer, druid and even warrior is not played at all. Tier 4 fractals use Firebrand as support and alacrity revenant for alacrity. Other 3 spots usualy are condi dps classes, most popular are condi firebrands and condi scourges. So its common to see fractal group made out of 4 firebrands and 1 renegade
It seems that I was incorrect with my research on this topic. at least where I looked there wasnt too much literature on the topic. A lot of what I am seeing and hearing is anecdotal evidence of the "meta". no problem with admitting I was wrong!
For me it's the excessive amount of ground targeting that kits need that stop me really enjoying Engi. I find it spoils the flow of combat, even with snap to target on it feels clumsy.
I have noticed this alot as well, especially in situations where moving and dpsing are intertwined. In other MMO's (WoW) If you were moving a direction and then jumped to land an AOE ability, your character would continue momentum that direction. In GW2 that is not the case so I have to figure out an easier way to do it I suppose. Excellent point!
Yeah as an engineer main. I avoid grenade and mortar kits like the plague because they are just a pain to use. Which is sad because it's one of our best DPS tools
I'm in the opposite camp. I like being able to target my abilities, especially if they have travel time, which is a common aspect of engi skills. Also, having your ground targeting set to single click is pretty nice
I just kind of pushed through and dealt with this, but more recently I was watching a settings video and there's a box you can check that removes the second click, so effectively you can hold down the button move with your mouse and on the release execute the ability versus the constant need to double click which actually had me revisit grenade and mortar for those very reasons, it's taking a while to get used to but it makes it so much easier of an experience.
I just spoke with some1 about the "Fantasy" problem with Engineer. I never imagined playing it, because of that reason. But finaly, after nearly 10 years, I started playing it, and i LOVE it NOW!
Right?!?! I spent so much time playing thief/guardian that I skipped over the engi and man I regret it. I am glad you jumped in! Thanks for taking the time to comment1
I started playing an engi in, I think, my first year of playing. (I was a new gamer in general, having made the excellent decision to start with gw2 😁) I could not get my head round it, and it's the only char that I've actually deleted. The mechanics were just very different, I guess. Fast forward a few years, and I decided to try again. This time I found a build I liked and had a ton of fun! I'm trying Holosmith at the moment, but I think I actually prefer the core build I was running before. So yes, I think engi is a class that you need to be in the right headspace to get the most out of it, but it's absolutely worth it when you are.
Its amazing how first impressions matter so much! I was on the same boat (leveling an engi was a bit boring and repetitive) so I went to guardian for the longest time. Now playing core engineer with double pistols is so damn good! I agree it does take a bit to master but mannnn once you figure it out and know where you need to be at the right time. The feeling is unmatched!
Awesome video man! (Those dad jokes are *chef's kiss*) Imo, engi's are quite hard to learn, i always liked the aesthetic and mechanic of the Holosmith, hope to learn it cuz I feel good with a power dps kind of builds. Hyped to see their next spec as well!
Glad you enjoyed! I agree, it feels like an achievement when you play the profession sort of (in my case) right and do well. I need to stop being lazy and go get the hero points for holo! Also saw your first video! Well done!
I started the game in January this year, I have 900 hours on my engi main alone xD now I'm trying out new classes but none reached 100 hours yet, I love engi it's the most unique class in any mmo and it's the best. It made me hooked into the game, and he's also a master crafter so, I just love it xD I'm usually such an altholic and I do have 7/9 classes lvl 80 and all but I've just played the heck and feel like I know the ropes of the class Right now I'm having a blast playing shadow arts deadeye and trying out mesmer that I recently made
Absolutly impressive amount of hours for such a short time! haha well done! Thats what drew me to engineer! master crafter, inventions and creations! I am not empowered by the elements, or a god, just a guy with a rifle shooting stuff.. haha! I will have to dive into mesmer, as it does seem like one of the most unique professions in the game.
@@CaffeinatedDad on the beginning and middle of the year I was off college so I played a lot, nowadays I play less time per day, but looking forward to end of the year when I can finish story, unlock skyscale and get ready for EoD Even managed to finish my first 2 legendary pieces, wvw medium chestpiece and legendary rune xD this game is the best
@@brenobarbosa3489 that makes sense. I was working virtually so I had more time to play. Now I am not. I have to finish the LW4 to work on the skyscale like asap!
I leveled my engineer to 80 the natural way and soloing HoT was a rough ride. I completed that story line and I went to PoF, but I wasn't able to get my hero points almost at all in HoT, I need to go back at some point with a group because soloing them as a scrappy flamer is rough.. You have to kite for your life. That's basically engineer in a nutshell, kite like you ain't ever kited before because you gonna die a lot solo. Or maybe I just suck.
Hahah kite like you have never kited before or die. I believe core engi is built around that idea. They are not meant to be in close quarters but also that thematically makes sense. Smart intelligent character running and outsmarting more physically capable characters. Nah I am with you, I die quite a bit.. haha thanks for the comment!
@@CaffeinatedDad Scrapper is awesome, while I can pump average 230k dmg in spvp on power reaper, scrapper became more consistent, faaar more versatile and inherently tanky, my top spvp dmg on scrapper was 400k. I love bruiser/juggernaut classes and scrappy is perfect for that (they even have a trait called juggernaut! Also, I can solo hero point challenges with ease even on core engine. It feels broken tbh ;)
The main issue is more how limited their builds are. The power build and condi build tend to look and play very similar. And the utility not used really do languish like turrets.
I personally don't feel that they are tooo similiar in gameplay (also I haven't played nearly as long as other so maybe I am not burnt out?) I do believe that the turrets would be a super fun build to play if they actually did something! Thanks for writing your thoughts down! I have seen such a great outpouring from the community and I appreciate hearing everyone's opinions!
@@CaffeinatedDad Power and condi both use holosmith and use at least one shared kit with that. So the differences in skills aside from damage type are far less than say the differences between say a power reaper or condi scourge. Or a condi Mirage or power chrono. Not going to dog on engineer though, it's my second favorite class for a reason. It's a lot of fun once you get the hang of it. It's just not as deep as one might think. Complex, but not all that deep. Hopefully that changes with machanist. Which looks super cool!
Oh~~ Engineer new elites are amazing. I have to be honest with you, I have zero interest in engineer at the beginning. But when PoF was released, I saw an Engineer use his F5, gosh it is super hype by just look at him play. Once I bought the PoF expansion, I immediately use my Engineer to log in. And surprisingly, on the way to collecting new hero points with the HoT elite build, I start to appreciate the HoT elite build. These two new elites are really fun to play
I was in the same boat! it did not appeal to me as much but once I understood the game a bit more I was immediately drawn to engineer. the uniqueness and play is just amazing. I really have to I vest time into the elite specs because they are awesome. thank you for the Comment!
Hi! Just 700+ subscribers? You're doing a good work promoting your channel imo, gg. I'm not a good player. Main War from '13 to '16. Then I've discovered how funny and exciting Engi gameplay was. Not just axe/GS, but many skill "lines" of gadgets, unique weapons and elixirs. Instead of a single burst skill, 4 buttons with the lesser version of healing & utility skills in your bar. I've had fun completing the whole Tyria map another time with him :D Then the realization: many buttons and combos to do something that other classes cloud do much easier and somehow better. Nowdays I'm stil temped to play it again after 4 years of break from GW2. Maybe something is different now?
thank you! I believe that's it in a nutshell. they work really hard to yield very small results. it's curious that it's not the opposite. a high skill cap with a high reward. I still enjoy it! and I am committing to engineer for EoD! thanks for your time and comment?
I'm a mesmer. I was a mesmer in Guld Wars 1 and I still am now. That being said, my second favorite is a three way tie between Thief, Elementalist, and Engineer. Not that hidden that I love the complicated classes.
Nothing wrong with that! I find that the more complicated the better! I feel more accomplished when I play them and do well! Commonalty between us! Thank you for leaving a comment of your thoughts!
If you're not playing a charr iron legion engineer, you're really missing out from an RP perspective. If you're somebody that absolutely loves the BuildCraft aspect of guild Wars 2, you're definitely missing out. I don't have an 80 for every class, but I do for engineer, necromancer, elementalist, warrior, and ranger. Engineer is easily my first and most intense love, it feels so fun to play. I always have at least one kit, no matter the build. I almost always consistently use scrapper and synergizes very well with the builds I like to play (I love you flamethrower kit), and just as of this past week finished unlocking all of holosmith, but I'm still very unaccustomed to it, it seems more complicated to the way I typically play. In WvW as a scrapper you get to be a quickness machine whether you want to be DPS or heal the group, you will make an enormous difference regardless. I don't raid so I run typically with celestial accessories, and then a gear specific armor and weapon setup. Diviners for DPS, Minstrels for healing. The green you will see on your screen when running quickness and using the med kit will make most classes cry with the complicated button mashing and combo setup they have to do to get anywhere near those numbers. Long live the Charr! IRON LEGION BEST LEGION
not going to lie I said the same thing when making my engineer, I have to be Charr and I have to be iron legion!. it is such a great and versatile class and I have to say seeing all the comments for scrapper makes me think I am missing out! thank you for your feedback!
I was playing ele for a while but eventually came back to engineer especially after the recent scrapper buff. Definitely game changing for me since I'm now learning so that I can make it my main.
I am riding that wave with you then. I am focusing purely on the engi so that i can play it well in EOD. I am excited to try out scrapper too! What do you think the Engi will get in EOD?
@@CaffeinatedDad I'm not exactly sure what to expect but I'm hoping it won't be as AI-driven as elementals. Can't deny the mecha vibe of the icon plus mace, but hopefully it'll surprise us in a good way. With how the first 6 professions were previewed, I'm not really expecting a support class to come out for engi. I also hope that turrets become re-worked to be more usable in the game because in the state that they're in right now they're definitely outclassed.
absolutely agree, it feels like they will need to have some type of nuance with mechs and building. the video I put out yesterday had this idea in mind!
Lol my 3 most played professions are Thief, Engi and Revenant. But honestly the reasoning why these professions are the least played is that there's much easier and straightforward professions doing what they do but better in almost every situation. Its particularly true for the Engi (as Thief does have a niche in SPvP that can't be filled by anyone else and Revenant is now the most common source of Alac in PvE). Didn't help that Anet had no clue what to do with Scrapper for so long. Holo is pretty good but is another flavor of Reaper/Dragon Hunter but both of these specs are much easier to play for similar results.
100% agree! there are easier options to do the same or similar things in almost all forms of endgame content. overtime it would appear that they mended at least some of their missteps but I am curious to see what their next spec will be. thank you for spending the time commenting!
i love Engineer. and Scrapper is my go-to elite spec. though, we shall see if that will change once we see what the new elite spec is. (also, one reason i unlocked Holosmith--besides checking it out--was for the lightsaber skin. my renegade looks like a Sith Salad with dual wielding them)
"sith salad" looool the way you worded that was as if I could order that at saladworks haha scrapper is the spec everyone has said I should play! It honestly looks a ton of fun so maybe now is a great time for it. thanks for the comment!
I’m very curious what these stats are based on, is it like out of overall characters created, is amount of hour spend on a profession, is it those professions reaching level cap? Depending on what it is data off, it could have very different meanings.
gw2efficiency.com/account/player-statistics is where I got the data. But agreed, looking at the basis and raising a question on how the data was formulated could completely change the meaning of the video! Excellent point! thank you for taking a moment to write down a comment!
@@CaffeinatedDad that's very interesting, if you look at hours played engineer and revenant swap places again. I'm wondering if we can find stats on time played at lvl 80, and then based on content.
Core engi is my favorite class, but the main reason why no one plays it is because it's the hardest one to master in any game mode, also for pve endgame it doesn't perform nearly as well as other easier ones
I agree with that statement. I understand balance issues and making all professions equal are tough but It would make sense that a tougher profession to master would yield higher results you know?
When I was first learning Engi I used to just Flame thrower EVERYthing, but now I'm a lot better at it. I have 4 of them now: Condi gunner, Gyro Scrapper, Holosmith, and a Rifle user built and ready for whatever EOD brings to the table. I still main Reaper and Renegade, but I play all classes as much as I can.
THE COMMITMENT!!!!! that's incredible that you have that many characters across the board! especially having more than 1! out of curiosity what is your favorite version of engi?
@@CaffeinatedDad Commitment is one word for it, Insanity might be another, especially given what I'm doing on my own channel right now, 1K Map Completions. LOL But my favorite Engi for a long time was my Scrapper who used a lot of turrets but I followed some advice from the Mighty Teapot, changed him to Gyro Scrapper and it has been really fun to experiment and do some decent damage with those things on a power build. I like Holosmith but it does die a bit, like more than a bit, bordering on a lot. Could be I don't play Holo enough to "get gud" at it. ;)
OOF good luck to you on that! Honestly I feel like even with core engineer flamethrower, I die so much less than I did say on my thief (A LOT OF DEATH) lol. I am spending time to unlock the elites so I will have to see what you mean!
My third character I ever created was an engineer and for long time that was my main. I deleted the character later for some reason, but I recreated it a while ago with the same name and roughly the same look. Honestly, I love everything about this class. Two of my guild friends are also really into engineer and everytime we do Fractals, we all three want to play holosmith. And one of them also shares my love for the scrapper. Our thre chars are all young looking charr with Metal Legion shirts, we basically roleplay as engineering students. I personally play mostly WvW and have alone 3 different builds for that (Holo, Scrapper, Core) and adjust them for different situations. I play scrapper mostly in bigger fights and use core for solo roaming. But to the "Ease of Use" argument: Isn't ele more complicated and harder to learn? Seriously, I never really learned ele, all that switching between the elements was always too much for me. Engineer is easy in comparison.
My sentiments exactly! I have found myself roleplaying a bit more (much more than I usually would) and I have done it organically. It seems like the engi had a specific place in your heart for the profession1 I thought the same with Ele, it looks overly complicated and honestly that turned me away. But then I see engineer and I say, oh thats easy no problem! Doesnt make sense? Thank you for taking the time to comment!
I love the engineer class. It's the first class I'm playing in this game, and the rotation to get down between main weapon set & tool kit set is a challenging skillset to master. There's a lot of numbers to keep track of with the cooldown timers between the two skill sets being independent from each other. Not to mention the addition of effects/boons provided by Elixirs, so there's a lot going on at one given time. I can see why many may opt out of Engineer for another class. But people opt in for other classes mainly due to playstyle when first going in, I believe. A person who loves the Mage/Caster archetype is going to choose Elementalist/Necro, for instance. I initially chose Engineer cause the sound of the Rifle firing is satisfying to hear, lol.
As an engi main. The leveling and core engi builds are very rough. Plus two of your trait trees will never really see play. But the elite specs are where it's at. Plus i just loved the character and fantasy of the iron legion charr who works towards a future where he will not need to build war machines, but a world enhanced by his inventions. It's dope to me. And i hope our elite spec for eod is good or at least cool 😎
Thanks for the comment! I am super excited for EoD elite spec. I am thinking some type of golem mancer or mechanist. I went with Charr engi too because it felt thematically correct! I am thinking that a big turn off is exactly what you said. the leveling experience can be a bit clunky.
I do love the elite specs, but I've found that all of the engi trait trees are really strong; as a matter of fact, I'd go so far as to say it has the most freedom of traitline combos of any class. I run Inventions/Tools/Holosmith on a build I use in open world, PvP, & WvW and it works just as well or better than any meta build I've tried.
Engie main here. It was weak back then, BUT EVER SINCE I GOT THE HANG OF IT AND THE RECENT BUFFS... IT IS GOD TIER. EVEN AS CORE, I CAN HOLD OFF AGAINST 5 ELITES BY MYSELF AND PROBABLY KILL 3 IN THE PROCESS IF I PLAY MY CARDS RIGHT. The thought of being able to dish out a can of whoopass using scrap inventions against LITERAL WARRIORS AND MAGES AND ALL KINDS OF FANTASTIC BULLSHIT feels so rewarding as I'm literally just a smart dude trying to survive and still WIN!!!
PreHoT, I played engi as a bunker condi in WvW using p/sh with interrupts for Confusion. So fun but Scrapper is a blast. Definitely one of the most fun roaming classes.
given the feedback I have to go and give it a try. Charr scrapper seems like a perfect fit haha. I was thinking about trying to make a defensive engineer build! what trait lines did you go down?
I have loved engie from day one and its why my second oldest character on my account is one of my engies. (yes i have more than one.) By far they are one of the most versatile classes that can usually swap roles in a pinch while still able to contribute in other ways. Love them to bits.
Absolutely they beat ever class in versatility. I think that is one of the most unique bits about them actually. However I feel that there is a perception of difficulty around them that dissuades people from wanting to play them! Thank you for taking a moment to comment!
Engi is the best qulity of life class for open world. For farming flamethrower and prema quickness kit also insane barrier. For raids and other high dps is the option
honestly I'm not even concerned with the dps or super high numbers I just enjoy the aesthetic lol. I've been meaning to unlock scrapper to try my hand at open world with it. thanks for the comment!
I do believe class fantasy is part of it, but not in the way that would imply GW2 engineer is lacking. I believe that other professions just translate better from other mmos. Some people just love the fantasy of a certain class, like paladin. Paladin in wow, paladin in ff14, templar in eso and guardian of gw2. That being said, it's always the theme I am looking for. Gw2 engineer, Machinist (and somewhat gunbreaker) of ff14 and got real into survival hunter when bombs and traps became a focal of their dps from legion onward.
you and I are in the same boat 100% I mailed a survival hunter as soon as they mads them melee with bombs and traps. it fit my niche perfectly. I agree that people are more inclined to do a fantasy class from more a mystical or spiritual background versus just a iron man type character. thanks for taking a moment to write a comment!
I am a main Guardian but I still love Engineer because it's unique. No other MMORPG has a class like it. I'm also an Engineer in real life. I do find it complicated if I want to maximise damage output but I am a casual player anyway and I don't do PvP or WvW. As for the Elite Specializations, I started with Holosmith because it looks cool and I love how flashy it can be although I think it's utility skills are not so damage oriented (2 shields skills, 1 buff skill, 1 damage skill) and it force you to keep using either Turrets or Engineering Kits or be in and out of Photon Forge to keep doing damage. Scrapper on the other hand, is also flashy and cool to play and the profession mechanic is simple.
Thats awesome that you can play what an engineer in game AND be one in real life! haha well done! I've seen ups and downs with the holosmith and I think its good but not as appealing to me as the scrapper. I love the idea first off of gyro's but I have always been a big fan of the Hammer in GW2. Thanks for the comment!
Never got the hang of Eng, but I main a Revenant and I think the thing that keeps people from really playing either is the A) difficulty of the game mechanics, and B) the core support nature of both classes. Most people I know what to be DPS, because they don't want the complication or responsibility of support. If you're going to play Rev or Eng you can't be too concerned with your personal DPS glory, you've got to support your team.
Well said! I really think thats what makes engi's unique in that aspect, is that they are capable of being a few damage dealing specs, a few healing/support specs or just go into a tough beefy tank spec. Sacrifice personal glory for support of the team. I like it!
GW2's engineer fills my ideal class fantasy in a fantasy game, most games do it wrong though, guns and stuff feel too out of place in a medieval fantasy setting usually. But GW2 is one of the games that did it right. Scrapper is my favorite, and I've seen that its actually the best class for open world. Now, every class is good in open world, but the reason scrapper is better is because: 1. *Amazing survivability* Its ability to grant barrier makes it so you can relax even while doing difficult HPs and whatnot. 2. *Superspeed* Mounts are great but superspeed while in combat is as fast as swiftness while out of combat. You don't know how satisfying it is to have if you have never tried. Also hard to play other classes if you do. Everything feels sluggish and slow. Also good for jumping puzzles. You can jump further with superspeed than with a dodge jump. 3. *Quickness* Its great in open world because it allows you to open chests and gather nodes faster. 4. *A long ass stealth skill* This is super helpful when you want to commune with a hero point with enemies around, run through an area without aggroing anything, etc. I tend to use it all the time. 5. *On demand stability* and projectile block. Again, really useful for jumping puzzles and...well, its stability. Its useful basically everywhere because knockbacks and stuns are annoying as fuck. 6. *Kits* Ok, that's obvious. But here me out. Kits allow you to, to an extent, not care about what weapon you are using. Most of your DPS comes from your kits, you've got ranged kits, condi kits, utility kits, etc. You literally don't need any weapon for playing engi. The only reason you'd want to keep one is for the stats, so it can literally be anything, wouldn't effect your gameplay much. And there's no cooldown to swapping kits unlike weapon swap! 7. *Easiest rotation ever* Its mainly just three skills and the rest is all auto attacks and filler you can do in any order. Meaning even while you're chilling in open world and don't wanna do complicated rotations, you can still pull off very decent DPS. And it also means you have a lot of freedom to choose what skill you want in the rest of the slots without worrying about a DPS loss.
well said! I am seeing a ton of players highlighting the scrapper and just how great it is! both PvE and PvP that is. gw2 absolutely did it right by the engineer with the fantasy and the playstyle. you are a scrappy ironman type character admits nature, elemental magic welders as well as super big melee combatants. thanks for the comment!
I do agree with a ton of points in this video essay, but I have one counter point. Ele has 4 sets of 5 skills for every weapon that isn't considering weaver. I didn't check to be sure, but that seem to me that it would seem to me that this far out shoots the 4-5 kits they have.
*damn.... thats adds up* lol there is a reason that I didn't play ele... well it seems like the ele though lots of buttons, there is a fairly short and concise rotation? Please correct me if i am wrong!
It's because only a handful of us are Pyromaniacs at heart. But (more) seriously, Torchlight II did Engineers amazingly well. GW2 Engineers echo a lot of the aspects from TLII from automatons, ranged weapons and melee weapons (hammer engineers ftw), but yeah the Engineers in both games echo each other to my mind.
honestly I made this video beca I came from wow which has no engineer class mind you and was so enthralled by how well the profession played and the other aspects of their kits! I'll have to see TL2 and see what you mean! thanks for spending a moment to comment!
I'm an engi main, but I don't think it's really a matter of we are completely not viable in end game modes. It feels more like, why would we take an engi? Anything that angi can provide other classes can perform better, with a much easier rotation. For example, why bring a heal scrapper when you can bring a firebrand? Why bring a condi engi when you can bring a condi renegade? I feel like the only people that play engi are the ones who just really like the class fantasy. For any function that an Engi can perform, we have to work twice as hard just to get bare minimum. We unfortunately don't even get to shine when we master an arguably more difficult rotation. At least, thats the way I have felt since the game launched.
This was a well stated comment. It highlights the truth that Engi's have to deal with in end game content. Why bring an engi when other professions can do a better job much easier? Personally I love the engi and I am happy to bear the burden of 2nd class for such a fun profession. Thank you for the Comment!
Probably necromancer warrior and guardian are most popular. I at the start mained necro and moved onto ele because as i played more and more i really grew on me. Then again i enjoy messing around on classes and discovering nuances of classes. Sometimes i gain apreciation for a class i never used to have, like i played rev for the first time doing beta of vindi and i didn't know what i was doing but it wasn't that hard to learn to play vindi and switched to herald and discovered i was having fun and enjoying it. I also played warrior beta with bladesworn and on that same beta switched to zerker and back to bladesworn and discovered i was having fun on bladesworn with the moveset and i did think it was kinda cool. Do i have issues? yeah, but i think every class has its ups and downs.
what is important is that you are playing the profession s and specs that you enjoy. also what GW2 does very well which is allowing for versatility between classes! guardian takes top, easily haha thank you for the comment!
Engineer was the first class I played and it’s still my main years later. But, it seems to me, like the class was more fun when I didn’t know what I was doing and just ran around with a flamethrower and turrets. I blame the rotation… it’s brutal.
Thats what I am starting to see, the rotation is taxing to do right. I have tried to perfect a turret build in PVP but its challenging. I am sticking with it though, I feel like it fits my playstyle perfectly!
@@CaffeinatedDad oh, no doubt. Charr engineer, to me, is the perfect combo. Fits the lore and theme so well. Engineer’s uniqueness is what got me hooked on playing gw2. But, brutal rotation, being a Jack of all trades but master of none, seems to scare a lot of people away. Scrapper was a step in the right direction in my mind… still my favorite to play.
Its tough for me as well. Even though it doesnt do as well as other professions I love that it keeps me interested and glued to the screen! Thanks for the comment!
So with 1500+ hours on my engineer, and much time spent pondering this exact question, I'll venture to make a few guesses on why engineer is unpopular: 1. Similarity to classes in other MMO's. Many people come to GW2 from other MMORPG's looking for a class that seems familiar--they're looking for warriors, paladins, summoners, casters, rogues, rangers, etc; a gadget & explosives-wielding mechanic doesn't really have a counterpart in any of the major MMO's out there. 2. Armor skins. Across the board, there are far fewer medium armor-wearing characters than either light or heavy. The leather trenchcoat look just isn't as appealing to a wide audience as either of the other options. Yeah, it has nothing to do with the actual gameplay, but with the number of people in this game that prioritize fashion above all I could see it being a major turnoff. 3. Basically what you concluded: the class isn't easy to play. Too many buttons, too complicated rotations. It's simpler than elementalist in this regard, but not by much. 4. No condition build. Lots of people love their builds where they can stack the condi's, sit back, and watch their enemies melt. Although both core and holo engi have condition variants, they're a pain to pull off properly and do less damage than the condition capabilities of any other class. With how powerful conditions are in the current meta, this means that engineer has the lowest benchmark of any class, and for people that only go by the numbers (and there are many) engi is at the bottom of the list. 5. Engineer is not, and has never been, the best at anything. Stealth or speed? Thief. Damage? Elementalist or (formerly) Mesmer. Boon support? Guardian for quickness, stability, & fury, Revenant for alac. Healing? Ranger or Elementalist. When you plan to create a character, you generally want one that's really good at what you'd like to do, and Engineer's jack-of-all-trades abilities don't tip the scales in any category. Now, this ability to do whatever you want at a tolerable level is appealing to people like me that change their build around all the time to fit the situation, but most people who are considering making another class to fill a new role might as well choose the best fit for that role. And that's all I can think of for now; let me know if you agree. Keep it up with the high-quality videos!
First off thank you for the detailed response. This was the epitome of what I came to. Its a bit too complicated AND other professions do a better job at any given role. Now its not to say that the playstyle isnt fun but it is very unfamiliar to multi MMO Players. Jack of all trades is the common reasoning I have seen for this profession and it is absolutely true. It fits my playstyle perfectly but in some higher tier content it gets outshined. Again thank you for the detailed and kind comment! Hopefully the dad joke didn't throw you too off!
I just wanted to point one offtopic out. The saying ,,jack of all trades master of none" is often used as negative description of something. But this proverb means actually the opposite. It was used as ,,its better to have something, that is good at most situations despite not excelent at any, rather than having something, that is excelent in one thing but sux in all of the situations" Its better to have football player, that can shoot, pass, duck and do rest of the things ok, rather than player, that is excellent at shooting, but he can't do any other thing. Just wait for ball and shoot.
I was here thinking "meh, probably not gonna play this class for a while. Holo seems cool, Mechanist looks awesome, but I mean... how could this be more stylish or satisfying than a Thief or Ranger?" Then I went into PvP lobby to test the class... and I saw the Flamethrower... Oh. My. God. Why is the Flamethrower so cool? Why does it have such amazing animations? Why does it look more powerful than any Elementalist's fire? You know what? I'm gonna level an Engi just to use that Flamethrower. Also, the Holosmith really is one of the most cool looking Elite Specs in the game. Tech classes in those games tend to be conceptually kinda meh, like "how are guns and machines slaying gods like that?" But the Holosmith gives me that vibe of "by advancing our tech, we have become gods ourselves." Mechanist has something to do with jade (haven't played EoD yet, so I dunno what that's supposed ti be) but the concept of having a magical robotic titan fits just as well. Scrapper though... it's like they're asking "hey, do you want more Engineer on your Engineer?" To which I say "gimme gimme gimme" but still think it's the least unique of the three, which seems to be the pattern with most HoT Elite Specs. Overall, I first fell in love with this class because of its Flamethrower. Now I've grown to adore every single aspect of it.
True, when I initially played engineer I was confused because I really thiugh the class was done so well, why arent more people enjoying this? It was minor lyrics complex, at least to me but alot of players choose not to even be involved with it. I am happy to hear your enjoying the engineer!
I'll be honest I did not give it a fair shake when I started and I am so glad that I tried again. it is such a great profession! thank you for commenting!
Just started playing Engineer after avoiding the class for so long cause it looked boring. Boy I'm having so much fun just running and gunning everyone, not to mention bombs are insanely cheeky to play in PvP. I just find medium armor to be very ugly unfortunately... Btw I love the way you speak, very calm collected and genuine. Liked and subbed for ur good energy!
listen! I was on the same boat it was interesting enough but I didn't feel like it resonated with me. I am kicking myself for not starting sooner. and the medium armor is atrocious on anyone other than human and sylvari! my poor char looks like a used car salesman. thank you for commenting and thank you for the sub!
As an engineer main since launch I love the class, but I do have several gripes. The over abundance of ground target skills, the general low damage, and complicated rotations are all things that grate on my nerves. However they are nothing, NOTHING, compared to my biggest gripe. The uselessness of the med kit. Use it and get no participation in any event you use it in, doesn't matter if you kept everyone from wiping repeatedly despite it being the least effective healing skill in the game and you get as much participation credit as a butterfly fart.
That's interesting about the medkit, I didn't know that using it doesn't count for a kill on a mob. I will agree the on ground hits are infuriating. I struggle kiting and hitting them without stopping or sending my camera a weird way
@@thehopelesspragmatic6701 well in my opinion A.E.D is not the most useless healing skill in engineer, because if u ever try raiding especially in wing 7 in sabir, there is a mechanic that u MUST avoid it with u have to fly up to avoid the mechanic and as Holosmith/engineer u can just go dps and avoid the mech with the A.E.D. and also in A.E.D the tool kit is a CC and it is helpfull to CC the boss when needed. so basically A.E.D = can prevent you getting died from one hit kill.
Use medkit when running scrapper and utilizing the DPS gyros, cooldowns are low enough that you can utilize them as you had into larger parties, and also just quickly switch out of your med kit to hammer and utilize 5 then 3 and 2 for quick AoE as well
Nothing is wrong with Engineer. It is one of the most powerful classes and are meta in WvW for years now. How ever like Elementalist to be a good Engineer you need to be able to play two pinanos at the same time and use kits and understand your build. If you don't you will feel like it is a bad class but the fact is Engineer can do everything. From WvW i know a lot of really good Engineers and watch them fight is like art. It have so much to use but you need to know it or again you are just an avrage guy who play the pianon but miss half of the notes.
I absolutely agree with your assessment of the engineer! balancing the cool downs and finding the right fillers take it from a mediocre to incredible. play the piano right be rewarded. miss the notes and suffer lol! thank you for your comment!
Engineer is amazing but it makes sense. The class is a bloated mess (no offense engi mains) with a huge pool of abilities that players have to navigate in different settings. This is coming from someone that used to navigate through the sea of pre-squish WoW keybinds. The reason why the devs squished WoW abilities was because this creep of meaningless abilities that started to make players hits feel weaker. Instead of having a bunch of kits and all that, they need to build these abilities into one another. From my time playing an engi, the core problem I have with the bloat of abilities is the fact that I'm pressing a fuck ton of buttons to do what I can do in a couple of buttons on virtually any other class. Top tier damage while dishing out major heals, condi cleanses, etc, but it involves just mashing the everliving fuck out of my keyboard.
Hahaha I read that with a certain tone of frustration! You are absolutely right, the engi while a thematically great profession has to play the piano to play effectively and even at that it doesnt perform as well as those who have an easier time. WoW Keybinds during BC were the bane of my existence! It was a struggle to press all of these buttons AND have the abilities on the action bars just in the hope that a situation would arise to utilize it. Remember viper sting on hunters?! Seriously though, thank you for spending a moment to comment!
I used to hate Engineer, then Scrapper and Holosmith came along, and the elite specs really opened up this class for me. I play all the classes, but main on Guardian, however I am very happy and comfortable taking an Engi into PvP or a WvW enviroment, which to me is my own personal stamp of approval on a class.
I have seen this quite a bit and I can see your point. I play the core engineer and love it haven't even dove into the elite specs and I love taking engi into pvp. I mean just last night I was able to condi two enemies at the same time to death (totally survived too...) I feel like everyone has tried engineer at some point and they either loved it or hated it! Thanks for commenting! what type of Guardian do you play?
My personal theory for why few people play engineer is that many of its signature skills like the kits and turrets are just bad to play with. Most of the kits have 5 weak skills that don't share a functional theme. For all the skills they have few of them are actually good for fighting npcs.
Honestly I have ALOT easier time in pvp versus pve! maybe that just me though. I think that as you experience the profession more you get into the flow and know when to use the kits... turrets are lacking severely... but I understand your point! Thanks for writing a comment!
I love the class.. Absolutely my favorite :D!!!!! I am so excited for the EOD elite spec.. I have always been extremely attracted to using mechanical stuff in rpgs though. Whether that would involve summoning robots, being a robot yourself, or using gadgets. So I am definitely biased...
honestly I am drawn to them as well because it's not like I am Maggie wielder or really fast and sneaky. nope I am an intelligent creator who survives with makeshift contraptions. I think you are right with the minions or the mech suit! we will see!
I honestly feel like too many buttons is why it isn't as popular. scrapper doesn't look like it has too many buttons but I also have not gotten into it
@@CaffeinatedDad its funny considering a lot of people outside GW2 complain (including me back then), that there are not enough spells to use and you just smash 1234 again and again:D
Thief is one of the professions with "few" buttons. 1-10, F1, F2, Weapon Swap, Dodge, About Face. 15 buttons and only weapons change context on swap. I think warrior is the same. Firebrand has 5 weapon swaps but only 16 buttons. This is way more than Wow and doesn"t have custom UI. Perceptions of "simple" are weird....
@@RecklessFables as I said, I meant it before I started the game. You look on videos/screenshots/anythin from the game and you see 5 buttons on left, 5 buttons on right, and some F keys controls. And becouse I played wow for soo long, instantly in my head I imagine, that half of these keys you press once per, like, minute or so. Like these are your dmg cooldowns or something. You really gotta start playing to see, how this work, and it is not, indeed, 5 spells with some cooldowns :)
Engineer is really great tbh. Was the one I always ignored because I couldn't get the hang of it, I thought the damage was low etc.... then I discovered juggernaut flame thrower and it became my first open world exploration clear very quickly. Loved it and scrapper. Engineer only has one problem for me.... it's not my Revenant. Also just have a proclivity to the heavy classes but love Engie now.
Honestly it was a tough switch for me, I played firebrand guardian for the longest time so I completely understand. Do you play core revenant or the elites?
@@CaffeinatedDad all three. Core is actually pretty strong don't overlook it, the F2 giving back energy is huge. Openworld I often run around with Herald, the increased moves peed 8s pretty addictive but I default to Renegade for harder content / AoE situations etc
I'll have to dive in, to revenant. I heard renegade is a ton of fun and hearts is strong for pvp. I love that each spec has their own viability in every type of content! even core has a play!
I was sold on engineer years ago with the celestial elixer might kit, you can keep close to 25 might 90% of the time, and with all the passive crit chance from arms it was i n c r e d i b l y strong before boon removal got alot stronger with new specs, and it never really got nerfed, I still love using the condi hybrid in pve
@@CaffeinatedDad I had left a comment with a link to the build and a short description of how it works but it looks like youtube deleted it, feel free to add me on discord and I can share it there if youd like - Shark_#0001
I main engineer. To the point that I really don't play anything else. It is so versatile and fits the niche it needs; it just needs a few QoL improvements here and there.
I can agree with that, I feel like it is designed to be the jack of all trades master of none so that could be why it doesn't top any specific area. What QoL improvements would you suggest?
I love playing support scrapper in WvW as main. I tried core, scrapper and holo in different game modes. In open world I also prefer a power/quickness scrapper. I tried all 3 variants with different builds in PvP and WvW roaming and I sucked at all of them. It always looks very easy if good players like Vallun and others play it. I'm way too slow with all the skills and never know when is the best time to use them.
Well Vallun is a different type of player (a really really good player) lol Its tough to emulate appropriately. but I will say that I have to dig into scrapper because I think I will really love its playstyle! Thanks for your comment!
It's weird to bring this up considering not that long ago rifle was one of the top dogs. Its one of the staples in wvw and has a lot of flexibility and options if you are willing to learn multiple roles and have multiple equipment tabs.
Its the "we where on drugs when we made this" class of GW2. Nearly every MMO has at least one class that feels awful to play until very high skill levels and then isn't even that great considering the stupid amount of work it took to get to that point.
"we where on drugs when we made this" ngl this made me laugh out loud hahaha! You are right though, there is a class in just about ever game that feels... just plain weird to play but when done PERFECTLY it is comparable which is where I feel that the engineer currently sits. Thank you for commenting your thoughts!
For me its the lack of weapons and those that it has feel more like a stat sticks when the class mostly uses kits. Secondly what i really hate is that the turrets are completely useless in every gamemode. Thirdly i hate how the kit backpacks were removed i understand that most people hated those but why not make them as a cosmetic items? Now the flamethrower and elixir gun just look stupid because there is no more fuel tanks on my back when i use them.
I did not know that they used to have the weapon backpacks... now that makes me angry haha! there is a lot of reasons why people are less in cloned to play engi, from what I've seen you really have to enjoy the profession to actually want to play it. what do you play now?
I've been with the game since alpha and me personally I've only never played Warrior/guardian/thief. I tried them but not much a melee player. I enjoy my engineer he's second most played to my Ele plus he's my weird little asura dressed as a cowboy sporting pistols and named Briscoe County Jr. lol I think engineer is complex unless you play a ton of it and just aren't intimidated by it, Likely that's why Rev is right above, the stances or whatever seem initially intimidating to some maybe for those that just want to jump into an MMO and bash or burn stuff down. I think every MMO has a class or two like this.
first I want to thank you for the comment and second THE NAME loool Briscoe County.... loool fantastic name! I feel your assessment on MMOs are correct there's always a few classes that just seem overwhelming so much so that people just say meh.... thank you again for spending the time sharing your thoughts!
Chrono + Druid + Warrior is not META in fractals... Alaren + Hfb + 3 DPS is (for PUGs). You should do a better reaserch before doing those kind of statements.
If I may, where did you find this information? When I researched for that statment, I went to Metabattle to see their suggested composition. Obviously you can have any number of combinations of classes, I am curious to hear your thoughts!
@@CaffeinatedDad It's true, if you look in lfg for fractal, people always looking for alacren or at least alac mirage, and healbrand. Druid is not meta in fractal cus druid tend to burst healing bu you need constant healing in fractal.
@@vickyvvvv8182 I'll be the first one to admit when I'm wrong, I couldn't find a definitive answer (also I haven't been playing super long in fractals to speak anecdotally). And constant healing makes sense!
@@CaffeinatedDad druid chrono warrior was meta before PoF. Nowadays the Meta is heal firebrand, alacrity renegade, bannerslave + 2dps. Souce: i do daily CMs + T4
The mesmer of the first game has nothing to do with the mesmer of GW2. Now this is my opinion, I have been playing Gw2 since 2014 and I left shortly before the announcement of the second expansion and I think that the elite specializations completely destroyed what were the uniqueness of the classes. At some point the developers decided to try to make sure that every class could cover every role. The spec. elite do not bring anything not already seen in other classes and this leads to an ever greater homogeneity between the classes and at that point the choice is based on numbers. A lot of people don't play engi because the elementalist exists.
honestly I believe you have a great point. it's tough to create new elite specializations to spice up the game without effectively killing older core specs that can't so everything the new ones do. your comment shines a light onto one of the biggest issues with the implementation of elites so thank you for taking the time to write it out!
Engineer you have to work twice as hard with twice as much janky to do half as good! Good ole Arenanet never fix anything but they like to take that money.
Depends what you play and what you want to do. Mechanist is bit boring because how little you do and depending on build you use it is as effective as other builds while being more noob friendly. When one handed player can get 30k Benchmark using Rifle and Rocket Turret as Power Mechanist and is able to play it on all Raid Bosses I think it is good. Take any easy build like Virtuosa and you can cointer it with Chrono. Each profession now days has something easy and something hard to play ❤ Except Necromancer 😂 there is nothing hard on them
I find that it is kind of a mess. Some good belt skills, some good utility skills, can’t change weapons in battle without using a kit, not any really good healing skills. and some of the good weapons take up a utility slot.
I believe you are right. the initial concept has been amazing but in execution there is a lot to be desired. the lack of weapons make it feel too reliant on skills as weapon kits which as you mentioned sucks!
Every time I try engineer, I end up deleting the character. The skills are just... they feel so... ew and rusty. And why would I want use a kit just to spam little tiny grenades when I can just play elementalist and blow everything up.
it's great honestly. yes of course elementalist now is my main but playing the engi with all the different bombs and explosives makes it feel like I wasn't someone who has been blessed with magical powers.... just some dude with a shotgun lol
Currently holosmith and scrapper are very strong in wvw/pvp and are pretty common. Core engineer in the other hand is very rarely played because of its complexity and being a bit undertuned but for me it is the most rewarding class and offers most in making my own builds and experimenting with gear/runes everything!
honestly this is exactly why I've been playing core. it is an absolute blast! will admit the other specs do look fun as well. but you captured it perfectly! thanks for commenting!
Engi has been my main since GW2 was in beta. I love this class, and think it's the best in the game. The eSpecs are strong, and capable.... plus, Mechanist is hands down the hottest thing in the lineup for EoD. I think people shy away from Engi because of it's low choice of weapons. It's guns, a hammer, sword, shield, and we're about to start running around Cantha inflicting blunt force trauma on people along side our big green friends.
absolutely agree! I feel like people aren't as interested because they think it's too complex as well. it's a great profession but I think under represented. thanks for leaving your thoughts!
I just started an engineer after playing a mesmer for several months. I think engineer is a lot easier. Definitely less squishy. Maybe not as much DPS, but I feel like I have more utility. We'll see if I still like it after I've gone through heart of thorns.
agreed! I played a theif through HOT and I got trashcanned by everything! now my engineer is able to take hits and do well pretty much in all content I get into. utility I think is the engis strong suit 100%. thanks for spending a moment to comment!
Yup, that last one is 100% the reason. I miss the viable turret build. ANet we're sorry we promise we won't afk farm any more, please bring back turrets
Actually, my next video is directly aimed at ANet, (nothing to do with classes but more the MMO Genre itself). I wish I played during the viable turret build.... It seems so cool. Thanks for commenting!
I take Quickness Engi for kite or tank in raid. For fractals (especially CM) .....eeee.....sadly due to CSG and CFB being OP, its hard for Engi to keep up.
I can understand that.... I feel like eventually they will get a spot due to some tuning or maybe the new EOD spec. Time will tell. Im sticking with it for the long haul though!
@@CaffeinatedDad I was extremely burnout from playing power core guardian since launch and then power DH so I took a break playing engineer. I needed something entirely different
I agree, I feel like any specialization after playing long enough it'll burn you out. power DH is a strong one to play! considered doing that for my guardian as well!
i've played my engi for almost 8 years and i'll say that it's hard to relax while your "autoattacks" are not auto and you need to constantly spam 1 while fighting -> it's just annoying in the long run with some builds ;D
Agreed! Engi's don't have the same luxury as other professions but I also don't believe it is meant to be a "set and forget" profession. It is meant to be constantly moving, clicking and changing to min max your capabilities. Great fun to be had with it though!
I think the problem is that people see them as complex and try to make em as such, you can make relatively simple and efficient builds without too much of a rotation. Just get a rifle and a morter/bombs/grenades with some turrets and you good to go!
Oh absolutely! I have this curse that I try to min max everything to be at utmost capabilities... lol I could do decent dps with a simplistic rotation if I wanted... but I make poor life choices ha!
There is too much missconception about ENGI, poeple think is hard and too complicate but they are wrong. But it's not a bad thing that not too many player main engi, its cool like that. Condi engi is so much fun in PVE but get too ez counter in pvp.
I think it's hard to shake first impressions! once people tried it and realized it was a bit spicy they may not want to get involved with it's complexities. personally I love playing condi in PvP! but I'm only rabbit rank lol thanks for taking a moment to comment!
It's beacuse it won't be your main. It's not as shiny or badass as a mesmer or warrior. Most people want that high fantasy style to their main class. I like Engineer but not as my main, not as my favorite. So it won't be played that much since a lot of casual players will go for more fashion/looks and how it feels to them rather than what's meta. And Ranger usually steals the people away as a middle class since most would rather have a cute pet than turrets. But that's just me as a mostly casual player that also plays with more casual players. But for example a lot of my veteran friends love playing Engineer and have them as main because they know what to do with a class like that and they don't really care about the looks or the feeling you get when playing a more high fantasy shiny class.
I WANT TURRETS NOT FUZZY PETS! haha I absolutely agree. it isn't as attention grabbing as a warrior or ranger, I feel like the engineer is a puzzle when playing you have to adapt and figure out every step of the way to optimize. doesn't not appeal to those who want straightforward combat or flashy shows! thanks for commenting!
yo same! the easiest professions would probably be warrior, ranger or Necro typically. they are very forgiving. thief Mesmer and rev have a lot of this going for them and they have typically have a higher skill ceiling. personal I'd you like melee warrior is simplistic!
I play engineer, my most played class in SPvP, and honestly overall. I just like the oddity that it is, and I've always like turret based classes. Scrapper is quite fun, Holosmith to me is so-so but it is quite fast paced, core will always be fun. I hope the 3rd spec either uses traps, or a golemancer.
agreed! Ive been enjoying the oddness too! it's great fun using elixirs to dodge and evade, turrets to smack people while kiting and burning. what a unique and wonderful class! I agree I think it will be something golem esq . it'll be interesting to see!
I play all the classes, but Engineers are also my least played class, but I'm looking forward to trying the Mechanist with EoD. I already made my Asura engineer who will take on this challenge.
personally I feel like a lot of people are reinvigorated for the prospects of the Mechanist. let's be serious it looked the best out of all the new elites. you are 100% ready to handle the thematics of the profession! lol thanks for leaving your thoughts here, I appreciate it!
I have roughly 600 hours in engineer, 1/10 of my playtime. Honestly dont remember any of them. I like it a lot, because swapping between kits for damage is fun. But it does seem like low intensity gameplay is what most aim for, so maybe there’s that.
I believe you are correct, again coming from a casual gaming experience it may not be what players are interested in, at least from essentially a piano of a profession! Thanks for spending a moment to write your thoughts down!
I think Mesmers though complicated have a really low skill floor. It's really easy to go into Open World, throw up a few phantasms let them tank for you, and then just hit autoattack and deal with a silly amount of the content with no issues.
and maybe that's cause when I've looked at them I have thought they looked incredibly busy! but also with engineers I feel like you can play at a low skill floor and still do pretty good. turret tanking for the win! thanks for spending time to comment today!
my biggest issue with engi is the missed opportunity. why does my Asuran engi have to be stuck with janky ass tech instead of cool magitech. and why isn't there a golemancer spec. like fuck. you have Asurans set up to be the origin for engineer and don't capitalize.
Hold on to your hat, because I believe thats the new elite spec for EOD. And I agree with that, IF ANYONE would have golem pets it would be the Asura no question! I would also like to see racial themed styles applied to contraptions. Like Asura engi's have more the golem look to their turrets, why Charr have a more rough metal (iron legion esq) look. Thank you for spending the time to comment1
This video certainly didn't age well lol the new Engineer elite specialization is FIRE! Definitely recommend checking out Mechanist, it's the first Engineer I can see myself maining on the regular. :)
The more difficult the class, the less it is played. If you look at your chart you can even see it rank ordered by difficulty to play. This is true for every game. Any other explanation pales in comparison to this.
You are absolutely right. I remember when I played WoW I was curious why Feral druid was so low on the charts for being a fun spec. played perfectly it did decent numbers but if a mistake was made, it would be punished severely. It was easier to just say I will play balance druid and call it a day. Thanks for commenting!
I have gotten a ton of wonderful comments about the scrapper and I am so excited to play it.... just need to farm HPs... lol Thank you for taking the time to comment!
I agree. The engineer requires too much effort for very little impact. It's exhausting to play. What makes Elementalist more popular, even though they're exhausting to play as well, is because of its theme. For me, Mesmer is the easiest to play. It's my favourite.
I can agree with that, a previous commentor suggested that people in a fantasy game want fantasy elements not really with a guy with guns and bombs... I will have to commit time playing mesmer because it does look kick ass!
I love engineer. The variety of builds and capability of the class is so good. Holo and scrapper are phenomenal too. I think people are intimidated by engi because of kit juggling really and truly. Playing power holo is like playing piano lol
I have head that piano analogy a bunch of times lol It does feel that way but honestly I think it is super rewarding! I love the idea of bouncing back and forth through the skills and kits just to optimize the gameplay! I love the engineer as well! its a great profession! Thank you for leaving a comment of your thoughts! I very much appreciate it!
In endgame PvE there is no reason to pick a ingi over any other class. You dont match the dps of Dragonhunter, the cdps of Burnserk or the heal healbrand except youre an insane good player but thats a other story. I put my hopes into the EoD Specialization to make ingi as good as the other classes. But yea, in PvP the scrapper is a beast.
Which is odd, wouldnt you think that a profession that is hard to master would pay off that mastery by generating higher numbers/utility? I have been wrecked by my fair share of scrappers in pvp!
Engi has always been my main BUT, pistol sucks, range sucks, no huge bursts like other classes, clunky, traits and kits ignored. It needs a total rework. There shouldnt be only 1 build out in PvP or PvE. We need options that are usable.
if they would change a few things (tweaking numbers and stats) I feel like we would have a completely different conversation. you are absolutely right! thank you for leaving your thoughts!
I love the engineer! What do you think their elite specialization for end of dragons will be?
Mmm, maybe one with customizable drone(s). You know, kinda like ranger's pets but you actually "assemble" them from certain parts, giving them certain bonuses, abilities, etc.
I reckon something that uses jade tech, with a emphasis on the tech. Maybe with something unexpected like a focus as the new weapon.
@@missk1697 that's what I am thinking like unique robots/mechs that do different things with a mace being your building hammer
@@soulstarsinger I have seen a few pop ups of a mace being the new weapon for engis. Mini golems?
What about the mystical power of the GUN? xD
lets not forget that at the start, core engi had a lot of bugs with its traits ,skills and weapons.
I mean by changing the core stuff like weapons
how they work I main eng in the first couple of years when gw2 came out they anet had a hard time getting eng in line with the other class there where a couple of overpower builds that only used a couple of kits you only used like one or two
eng was broken: I played what I called speed eng the idea was to keep swiftness up making you run 20% faster and using a lot of low cooldown skills with a pistol/pistol, pistol/shield, and movement kit skills like elixir gun using the f skills a lot like rocket boots give good amount burst and damage with just normal pistol damage you could hit like 3- 4.5k crit 5k with normal cond bleed, fire, poison max out a 750 to 1k damage each and some confusion hit with tool kit and pistol 4 skill it was like 9k damage with pistol 3 I have hit like 20k. with pistol/pistol the highest cooldown 20s was the glue shot 5 skills witch there was a skill you could lower the cooldown of all pistol skill by 20% you had so much control two good bursts damage and burst heals very good movement it was around the time when warrior could hit like 90k - 100k damage with there 2 skill hundred blades the state back then where a bit off so every class other than the ranger class could be broken in some way.( i remember a couple of time 5v1 in wvw with my eng)
It's also tied to thematic : people don't go into a high fantasy mmo to play with guns, rifles and grenades, they want to throw fireballs or bash things with a sword
That... is actually an excellent point!
That’s a really good point. I share your opinion!
Unlucky me it's pretty bad in game 😂
then shouldn't warrior be one of the least played professions?
Im in love with the Holo, I cant get over how beautifull the skill look, the holo is perfect for my Asura!!!
Bannerslave is still used for power comps but a lot of condition comps will forgo a BS for another dps
Edit: 100% dropped you a like for that dad joke!!!
thank you for the info! it definitely was in correct on the meta. And.... this is a good learning opportunity for me at least! 3 DPS versus 2.
that's great info! again higher level fractals are not my strong suit so thank you so very much for the information!
haha I'm glad I could make you laugh,
For fractal: Druid, Chrono, Bannerslave? what year is this?
I thought the trinity Fractal now are Heal Firebrand, Alacren and Scg, plus 2 others which usually filled by condi firebrand/condi scg anyway
You are correct, where I got this info it was outdated. metabattle hasn't updated in a bit!
:D Wouldn't trust on them for these kind of information, rather check Snowcrows and Discretize for that.
furiously writing that down! thank you! I don't want to give out false information!
@@Sayrann I'm so sick of people only liking me for my banners. What about my rugged good looks? =(
@@Rex_Smashington Well you can also just play DPS Warrior. :P Then people are liking you because of your DPS!
Ground targeting is my exact same pet peeve.
It made me hooked into the game, and he's also a master crafter so, I just love it xD I'm usually such an altholic and I do have 7/9 classes lvl 80 and all but I've just played the heck and feel like I know the ropes of the class
Right now I'm having a blast playing shadow arts deadeye and trying out mesmer that I recently made
Absolutly impressive amount of hours for such a short time! haha well done!
Thats what drew me to engineer! master crafter, inventions and creations! I am not empowered by the elements, or a god, just a guy with a rifle shooting stuff.. haha!
I will have to dive into mesmer, as it does seem like one of the most unique professions in the game.
@@CaffeinatedDad on the beginning and middle of the year I was off college so I played a lot, nowadays I play less time per day, but looking forward to end of the year when I can finish story, unlock skyscale and get ready for EoD
Even managed to finish my first 2 legendary pieces, wvw medium chestpiece and legendary rune xD this game is the best
Nah I am with you, I die quite a bit.. haha
thanks for the comment!
Engie never really clicked with me, until I started playing scrapper in WvW. Now it’s my favorite WvW class.
I really have to try out scrapper, everyone keeps telling me its so awesome!
I've had fun completing the whole Tyria map another time with him :D
Then the realization: many buttons and combos to do something that other classes cloud do much easier and somehow better.
100% agree! there are easier options to do the same or similar things in almost all forms of endgame content. overtime it would appear that they mended at least some of their missteps but I am curious to see what their next spec will be.

i love Engineer. and Scrapper is my go-to elite spec. though, we shall see if that will change once we see what the new elite spec is. (also, one reason i unlocked Holosmith--besides checking it out--was for the lightsaber skin. my renegade looks like a Sith Salad with dual wielding them)
"sith salad" looool the way you worded that was as if I could order that at saladworks haha
scrapper is the spec everyone has said I should play! It honestly looks a ton of fun so maybe now is a great time for it.
thanks for the comment!
@@CaffeinatedDad Im an odd ball its seem, I prefer Holo over scrapper, but both are amazing for different reason!
I’m very curious what these stats are based on, is it like out of overall characters created, is amount of hour spend on a profession, is it those professions reaching level cap? Depending on what it is data off, it could have very different meanings.
gw2efficiency.com/account/player-statistics
is where I got the data.
@@CaffeinatedDad Yeah, core condi engi used to be meta in pve endgame back in HoT, but PoF elite specs made everything much easier
It seems like the engi had a specific place in your heart for the profession1
I thought the same with Ele, it looks overly complicated and honestly that turned me away.
IRON LEGION BEST LEGION!
Engi is the best qulity of life
class for open world.
Now, every class is good in open world, but the reason scrapper is better is because:
*damn.... thats adds up*
lol there is a reason that I didn't play ele... well it seems like the ele though lots of buttons, there is a fairly short and concise rotation?
Funnest thing to do is use magnet to pull someone into a 1v3 and literally watch them try to faceroll out of it.
this has happened to me a lot in WvW. I hate magnet pull!
Do i have issues? yeah, but i think every class has its ups and downs.
what is important is that you are playing the profession s and specs that you enjoy. also what GW2 does very well which is allowing for versatility between classes! guardian takes top, easily haha
thank you for the comment!
I think you'll really love the scrapper, good damage and one of the best survivabilities even without tanky gear!
Everyone keeps telling me! I just need to stop being lazy! (or just slow down on video editting....) Ha!
thanks for your input!
@@frizzlefry176 we will have to see what EoD has in store for us. I have high hopes!
I main engineer for year and its true thats it more complicated, when I jump on another classe, I get bored so fast.
Its tough for me as well. Even though it doesnt do as well as other professions I love that it keeps me interested and glued to the screen!
Thanks for the comment!
So with 1500+ hours on my engineer, and much time spent pondering this exact question, I'll venture to make a few guesses on why engineer is unpopular:
It was used as ,,its better to have something, that is good at most situations despite not excelent at any, rather than having something, that is excelent in one thing but sux in all of the situations"
Its better to have football player, that can shoot, pass, duck and do rest of the things ok, rather than player, that is excellent at shooting, but he can't do any other thing. Just wait for ball and shoot.
Damn, you must live in another world where the fractal group comp is chrono, warrior, and druid with 2 dps. XD
Yeah, thats the meta of like 2018 or something.
I was living in the past lol where I drew this info from was no longer up to date (metabattle) it is no longer true!
2018 was a great year ... lol nah it is 100% incorrect info
I was here thinking "meh, probably not gonna play this class for a while. Holo seems cool, Mechanist looks awesome, but I mean... how could this be more stylish or satisfying than a Thief or Ranger?"
Then I went into PvP lobby to test the class... and I saw the Flamethrower...
Oh. My.
Tech classes in those games tend to be conceptually kinda meh, like "how are guns and machines slaying gods like that?" But the Holosmith gives me that vibe of "by advancing our tech, we have become gods ourselves."
Mechanist has something to do with jade (haven't played EoD yet, so I dunno what that's supposed ti be) but the concept of having a magical robotic titan fits just as well.
Engi main here and i have loved it since i started playing!
Engineer in Anarchy Online is 80% crafting class, with a robot that does the fighting for you.
I would love to see some type of iteration like that for the end of dragons elite specs! wouldn't that be awesome!
I struggle kiting and hitting them without stopping or sending my camera a weird way
A.E.D. is the most useless, no one seems to know how to make it work properly, at least I can character roleplay with Medkit.
Medkit can provide nice healing on proper build, but it doesnt tag mobs.
I mean just last night I was able to condi two enemies at the same time to death (totally survived too...)
I feel like everyone has tried engineer at some point and they either loved it or hated it!
Thanks for commenting! what type of Guardian do you play?
@@CaffeinatedDad Open world and PvP I generally play a Dragon Hunter, in WvW I run a Firebrand build whilst running support for my guild.
solid choice right now. I feel like 90% of metals right now are just guardian variations lol
@@CaffeinatedDad haha! love it! I love the intelligence behind the whole scheme as well... Almost feels similar to how Batman is
lol the Batman profession of GW2 great comparison
I would love to play scrapper in WvW, but too many buttons and I've have to change my layout in order to accommodate that one build.
@@wisniamw EXACTLY!!!! Lol my thoughts! I thought it was going to be too intense but then I said oh I basically have 5 buttons... That's not bad
I was going to say it sounds strong for PvE! Do you have any literature on this?
@@CaffeinatedDad I had left a comment with a link to the build and a short description of how it works but it looks like youtube deleted it, feel free to add me on discord and I can share it there if youd like - Shark_#0001
TH-cam has been on some comment shenanigans recently. once I sit down at my desktop I'll add you!
@@---dy5ux thank you! I looked for as much literature as I could when putting the video together!
@@CaffeinatedDad Yeah, you got a great point. Thanks for your reply. Maybe someday I'll try it again, lol.
Once I found the stable regen shield flamethrower build on engi and became an immortal god I can’t play anything else lol.
They seriously have a ton of power if they are played properly! I mean cmon!
Thank you for leaving your thoughts!
In WvW scrapper is a meta pick for zergs. It's fair to say that if your team is lacking in scrappers you'll get destroyed by the enemy.
This is great to know.. Haven't messed with WvW yet. mainly focusing it on SPVP and getting ascended gear
I still suffer from PTSD from learning the condi rotation that was meta a few years ago for raiding xD
From what I have seen it is incredibly complicated! haha tough goings! What do you play now?
I think it's hard to shake first impressions! once people tried it and realized it was a bit spicy they may not want to get involved with it's complexities. personally I love playing condi in PvP! but I'm only rabbit rank lol
thanks for taking a moment to comment!
Chrono and Druid in fractals, what is this 2018 lol?
i was still dabbing when I wrote this... nah my fractal info was incorrect. I'll admit it!
What professions are the easiest? I started thief because cool. But the more i play the more complicated it gets. Im to old for that shit.
yo same! the easiest professions would probably be warrior, ranger or Necro typically. they are very forgiving. thief Mesmer and rev have a lot of this going for them and they have typically have a higher skill ceiling. personal I'd you like melee warrior is simplistic!
GOLEMANCER!!!!! LETS GO!!!!!!!!!!!!! BIG ROBOT GOOOOOOOOOO BOOOOOOOOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seriously I would be so hype for a Golemancer base espec! :D
I play all the classes, but Engineers are also my least played class, but I'm looking forward to trying the Mechanist with EoD. I already made my Asura engineer who will take on this challenge.
personally I feel like a lot of people are reinvigorated for the prospects of the Mechanist. let's be serious it looked the best out of all the new elites.
you are 100% ready to handle the thematics of the profession! lol
thanks for leaving your thoughts here, I appreciate it!
I always use the elixir gun on my engineer, I love it!
I always forget that we have the elixir gun! lol I'm also not the best player to be honest... haha!
thanks for leaving a comment!
proud to be one of the engineer mains out there!
your in good company! I've only recently started playing it but completely forgot my guardian haha
Oh my god this video is now kicking me in the behind.... Damn! lol
Well thank you for the comment anyway!
I love my flamethrower with elixir engineer! So fun!
core engineer imo is awesome! I love playing it! also probably have an unhealthy obsession with fire.....
lol thanks for commenting!
@@CaffeinatedDad I love me some fire!
Scrapper is my fav elite out of any class elite in PvE content. And perhaps in WvW as well(as dps).
I have gotten a ton of wonderful comments about the scrapper and I am so excited to play it.... just need to farm HPs... lol
Thank you for taking the time to comment!
Give the entire range of the distribution of class by percent played is 8% - 12%, it doesn't seem like people dislike the engineer that much?
