Coincidentally, my first toon in WoW was a Hunter, and I then migrated my main to a Paladin, meanwhile in GW2 my first toon was a Ranger and I migrated my main to a Guardian.
Use to play Guild Wars 1 as a (Fire) Elementalist. I remember you could grab skills from bosses and had skills to heal myself as I casted out spells. Then Guild Wars 2 comes out my first instinct was to choose what I was already comfortable with and go Ele. But it wasn't what I had in mind. Then HoT came out and I was switching elements, healing others while also giving boons it was fun. But then I tried Guardian when PoF came out and I love it. Love the firebrand.
Hey, I remember the good old days when 11 year old me saw my fire magic spells saying 106dmg but due to an enemy armor dealing 40 dmg, then going crazy when I would be one shotted in my starter armor.
My recommendation is, don't fear to make alts. Once you get to 80/endgame the game will give you a bunch of ways to get lvl up tomes/gear. My revenant was just a few hours old when I already started raiding with it.
One of the main points I think this video is making is that you don't have to commit to a "Main" right out of the gate because of how the horizontal progression system works.
I love Ranger as a main. Was very fun and first pet game that I had and I loved this idea. I also loved ele but would get downed very easily. Over 10 years I have one of every class. And through 10 years peoples opinions and "meta" got me confused if what I liked was "good" now I no longer care what others say. I have every spec in the game. But only play ranger and ele! Now learned to trust my gut. Tyyy❤
While you kind of touched on it indirectly, I think the biggest thing I'd tell anyone making their first character is that the core aesthetic/role for the classes is just not really used very commonly. I'd stress much more heavily the Elite Specializations each class has and what type of gameplay and role THOSE have, as I feel that's a much better representation of what the endpoint for each of the classes looks like.
EXTREMELY good points in this. Even if a class isn't "easy" doesn't mean you shouldn't play it! If you're new to GW2 you will learn how to play that class regardless when leveling. You'll learn to master all of its abilities by playing the game content over time, now if you're running straight into pvp ok you might have a different argument on your hands but besides that. Play whatever class looks fun...I spent WAY too long making characters cause I was looking up "best classes to play" guides but I finally told myself "just freaking the play game" and I did. Made a warrior (mind you I do not really enjoy that class type) but I'm having an absolute blast! On my way to a bladesworn, gun sword? Oh ya. Just find class that you think will be cool, and play it. Worse case? You don't like it, make another.
Having played the original Guild Wars (still do every now and then), I had the expectation of not treating any class like it was in a defined role... every class is DPS with extra features. So naturally my first character had to be an elementalist because I loved the class description. Now as I'm learning how to play it, I'm finding it very similar to the bard in Everquest in how you have to utilize everything, know how to time skills/abilities, and get used to taking those keyboard skills to the max.
I have 6 alternating toons that ive made over the course of 10 casual years. I will agree going into it first, your expectations are way off once you enter combat with certain weapons. For example, I would never play a mage type class, but on a whim tried Ele and then equipped two daggers... no class is more exciting to me. But they're all fun.
Hi. Wanted to start GW2 for a very long time. Especially my curiosity hyped when the game became free to play but I still wasn't able to dare to start it. Couple days ago I found out that the game was released on steam aswell. And here I am now following your guidance step by step about the game trying my best not to get spoilers even with environment. Thank you very much for the content. I hope I will learn much.
I can relate to that with my character creation. I picked Warrior because I played warrior in wow and only warrior since vanilla. After reaching 80 in GW on a warrior, it just didnt click and I ended up loving another class that fit my style more.
Ahh I remember these days. I picked a Sylvari Ranger to start off with. I did PvP for half a year, moved on to master low level dungeons, then got sucked into Fractals of the Mists. I dabbled with some WvW, popped in and out to get some special currency and cool skins, but oh boy, was I not prepared for WvW. The next time I got in, I treated it like a standard bit of WvW tomfoolery, I roamed around for a while, taking camps, killing lone players, and eventually I'd go for max loot by joining a Commander's squad and tagging along. I was kicked. Instantly. When I enquired, it appeared that there was somewhat of a Ranger boycott going on. No one in WvW accepted Rangers into their squads because they offered, and I quote: "Nothing." Their tools weren't undervalued, they were simply useless. A lot of what it could do, other classes could do better whilst excelling at 5 different things at once. The power creep really started setting in and, unfortunately, Ranger was left behind. The community's response to it was... strange... actively choosing to punish other players and insult them consistently in map chat, whisper chat, to the point where one of my roaming duels told me to "fuck off" because I was a Druid. To be clear, you cannot simply message an enemy player in WvW, they had to go through some convoluted as-yet-unknown to me tactic in order to message me privately. I literally couldn't do WvW as a Ranger, unless I was content to simply be a lone wolf. Mind, that has since been "fixed". But I can't say I'll ever forget it. Who knows what class will get ass-rammed out of an entire gamemode next.
I really agree with your first point. At the time I started playing GW2 (on launch) I was really into playing Rogue in WoW and while they do have great similarities, it really did not feel the same other than both playing around with stealth and being somewhat mobile. Ironically, Rogue in WoW had a strong combination between energy management AND CD management, while in GW2 it's largely energy management. Similarly, Rogue in WoW has a greater variance in abilities used and the utility you have as a Rogue in WoW typically doesn't cost energy, therefore hurting your DPS. While in GW2 it largely does, which is something I really didn't like about Thief in GW2.
Played off and on and restarted a few times, until Necromancer. Now, I am a Necro main, almost the ONLY Harbinger in metas I do. Harbinger made Necro even better.
I wanted to play ranger in this game but I feel disappointed that I have to swap weapons for melee range and it’s even worse when I see it does more damage as melee than ranged lol. Now I’m trying to choose between ele and mesmer 😮
Don't be disappointed my friend. I can almost certainly say that your problem might be the build and approach to an enemy. Especially if it's VS another player. I main ranger since start. In open world, tick a bit using survival skills and traps. You can do immense damage with good eye on boons you have and status you apply to enemies (this is including ranged weapons). If it's against an player, I make them fall in a sense of security with starting the fight with melee and make them use their block skills, as soon I know those skills are on cool down, I switch to longbow. Zephyr of quickness with nr2 skill of longbow....i melt them. Ranger is a mix with fighter+trickster. I love the mind games I can do when I play ranger.
My 1st was a Charr engineer. Not very popular but I enjoy him. thank you for including the word fun, this is the reason why I play games. Always have fun.😊
I remember always playing a druid in other MMOs.. DAoC, WoW.. I really liked the boomkins in WoW. Even before they were buffed. I was kicked out of a raiding guild because I wasn't a heal druid, I liked moonkin. And when I heard about the druid elite spec coming out in the first expansion, I was really hyped.. I was hoping it would be a dps druid with cool abilities, similar to the moonkin in WoW. I was disappointed when it was released and turned out to be purely healing. And now, more recently, they gave druid a damage component when using Celestial Avatar, so now I have a druid build again that can do damage, albeit not the best damage in the game. But still fairly decent aoe damage. Still a far cry from the moonkin, but hey.. I'll take what I can get.
All your points are very valid and good points. I started GW2 as a Charr Warrior, swapped to human Messmer and then got convinced in to making a ele for raids in World v World. Our guild had none but we where swimming in Messmers and i played healer/support in other games and they asked so nicely so i said yes and made a Asura Ele.. My ele have the most played hours now 10 years later. Sometimes i get bored but then i have all my alts and jump on my mech, staff daredevil, ranger or necro or dragonhunter. Mood of the day and what i aim to do usually decide what to pick =) GW2 have made sure that i don't have to stress about it. I can pick and play what ever i feel like and i can make new characters supereasy and since they share my bank, wallet, masteries, mounts sometimes even gear it just is very easy to play what you like, just as you said. Your main might not show up until years later when you suddenly realise you played 12 k hours on it =D
My first class was thief. At first I played without any expansions for few months, then picked up pof and hot, then made my thief into Daredevil. To this day 1.5 years later I still about 90% of the time play as Daredevil (cond dps), recently created Renegade (alac power dps).
I'm new and used my boost on ranger, glad I did because I can do WB trains and unlock QOL stuff in various expansion areas. But loving Thief, Rev, and Mesmer....will prob play through all 3 (with no boost). The weapon options in this game are SO fun!! Thanks for the vid!
When I started playing 6 or 7 years ago, everyone talked about how mesmer is a complicated class that's not recommended for beginners. I really loved the concept though and my character since then is my main to this day.
@@CaffeinatedDad absolutely! Having three elite specs each and tons of weapons it takes a lot of time to get a sense of understanding the class and being familiar with it enogh to feel comfortable. Having fun with the theme can be a great help in overcoming this obstacle that we all face when learning something new.
I've tried to get into GW2 so many times and I always tend to just stop playing. Ive got 1 character at lvl 25 the other 2 are new. I had no idea you could try out all the classes, this was very helpful! Thanks I will give that a try.

New players often ask me what class I like the most and my answer is that I've actually enjoyed 8 out of 9 classes thus far and I'm sure I'll learn to enjoy the last one too as soon as I have time to figure out a build I like.
As someone who played almost exclusively Dragonhunter for like 6 years until recently, I agree that playing various classes is really fun and I highly recommend to do that. Don't get me wrong, I still love my Dragonhunter, it's my comfort pick, but exploring and learning other classes is really fun. There is no gear treadmill in gw2, you don't have to rush, just pick a class that looks fun and enjoy the ride :)
My first class was an Engineer because guns and turrets. I've cycled through every class and keep coming back to the engineer, although I'm not playing anywhere near optimally
Started my adventure also as Ranger. Next, after recommendation from veteran, tried Necro with aim to play the Reaper. Best choice ever, I still love to play this spec even today.
this is exactly what i got recommended, and how i got started... started ranger, but before i swap to necro, i kinda want to finish up some of the mount masteries.. so i can have a smoother experience with necro
You know I do have this weird tangent about classes. I really like the Ranger class, but as a Ranger specifically. The base class feels like you are playing Aragorn more than you are a traditional ranger, bow access, greatsword, axes, swords, it is really fun. Not to mention being a leather clad fighter is very close to a D&D Fighter. But it is the classes after that sort of ruin it for me. They are all sort of locked into a druid adjacent class in my perspective (aside from just the druid, the other two are pretty much just druids with different weapons). In the end I made my main a Necromancer because that is just my vibe. Oh luckily, with weapon master it really just expanded what the base classes can do without having to spec into an additional class, and I think that is neat. So it solves my problem with the Ranger, I can stay the base class but still use hammers and daggers and stuff.
My first character ever since a fresh start was an Elementalist and I already enjoyed him since the beginning. At first I thought Ele would be like a classic mage class where you'd stick to a single element and focus almost exclusively on it but as levels advanced I realized that swapping attunements was crucial to its overall DPS and efficiency and that melee or short ranged weapons (like the scepter) were way better than the typical Staff mage we see in most other MMOs. Elementalist's playstyle is so fluid, quick and fun that I'm finding it hard to play more "quiet" classes because they feel slow when compared to the frenetic keyboard mashing of the Ele. 😂😂
Excellent approach indeed :) My only spanner in the works is that I, being a decent swordsman in the real world, like to play melee classes ... buuut ... being old and my hands getting stiffened up with arthritis and my visual acuity fading, I have found that, as the game pressed on into EoD, I simply cannot keep up and spend half my time swinging at air, as a mob I cannot see amidst all the visual flashy effects has moved away. Everything moves too fast for me now so I am coming to accept that I need to play ranged classes with fast attacks or I am just not going to cut it. That's frustrating as in the real world my skill and experience mean that I don't often struggle even against quick-twitch young bucks who think they can take the 'old man' ... I taught them everything they know ... but I didn't teach them everything *I* know! :chuckles: But the laws of keyboard warrior-dom are more unforgiving :sadness:
The first toon I made was an asuran engineer, and a member of the college of synergetics. Through understanding base physics and simple alchemy I hope to extrapolate and understand the eternal alchemy. I regret nothing, despite learning engineer in core (ye ol grand pianist).
I always played a cleric or healer and going into GW2 where everyone is pretty much self-sufficient was disappointing, but now I appreciate the extreme soloability of the game.
Dear Gadd, it's true. I spent a whole season playing rogue, so I tought I should be to choose a thief at GW2. Now I have a payback deadeye thief rolling like as my old belf hunter, haha. It's a bit kind of funny. I mean I'm tired of WoW's paladin gameplay, but a very love my F2P core guardian too.
This kinda holds true for me, although honestly at this point i cant remember if my first toon was my ranger or engineer. All my toons are asura because theyre the closest goblin race but ranger has been my main for years, even if i chuckle that my pets are bigger than me
I have class adhd. I keep jumping around with deadeye, herald, eng and reaper. I just cant choose but I keep going back to deadeye just because the damage is Redick.
My choice was based on the terrible unfairness and terror of Rouges stealth in wow, so my first profession was Thief and that was an okay choice, Initiative kinda spoils you from the normal professions and there cool-down on skills, now that Thief can heal and give boons my first character has a fine time. Generally picking a character as a new player is hard but if you have the character slots just start and try, sure the "new player experiences" is kinda slow for a skilled player, so now it takes longer to get a feel of a profession. Then the old chestnut of enter in to the "PVP lobby" and try out is a still valid way to get the experiences overload and figure out if the profession is for you. good points given and hope it helps some new players
The really good thing about gw2 is that all classes have proper builds All have good dps options - nearly all can do good offensive supports (all classes can give alac or quick! ), some have proper defensive supports, all classes can do very good open world builds and all classes can be very creative with creating unique and flavourful builds You dont need to play optimally- just have fun! I just must stress it that if you do more difficult team oriented content like raids, strike CMs or fractal CMs that you shouls bring a well functioning build that delivers the role you need to fill Otherwise you could be the reason for wipes and nobody wants that ^^ But especially CMs are not that played by everybody so dont worry Hd have fun in any other gamemode
My first class in GW2 was ranger, on one hand because as a real life archer, i pick archers in every game, but also because i come from GW1 and my main was ranger there. To my (dissapointing) surprise, GW2 rangers in some aspects are not even the shadow of what they are in GW1, specially if you fine tuned your ranger build there, finding that only 2 of the 5 longbow skills are matching what you used in gw1 was terrible (pretty fun to weild a bada$$ hammer as a ranger though). After that rather sad experience, tried the thief, quite fun class to play, super dynamic and fast paced, then the engineer/mechanist i love that class, specially roasting enemies with my flamethrower while to robot keeps the aggro. Tried just about everyclass and the one that's catching my attention now is the revenant, i think it is a very unique and interesting class to play (as a side note, the worst dissapointment, from a former gw1 player point of view is the necromancer, really hated it, maybe because my 2nd main in gw1 was a necro minion master) The Mesmer in GW2 is quite "meh" for me playing a mesmer was all about being the master of interrupts, the worst headache for everyone, either in PVE or PVP, the level of frustration not baing able to use any skill against a good mesmer in gw1 was out of any scale. I'm still trying to make peace with gw2's mesmers, as i loved them in gw1. But not everything feels worse than gw1 for me: the elementalist in gw2 is brilliant, much much much better than gw1
Funny thing is it took me over 10 years to find the character I love! The Ranger! I never made one because I hated it in WoW and now I have played it a few months and have all specializations unlocked and I love all of them! Untamed FTW in open world! Totally OP!
i think a lot of new players might not realise that almost nothing is tied to your character. All progression made on one character is directly transferable to another. Even XP, like a max level character has many ways to accumulate xp tomes over time which can be used to get a new character max level. At default, the game gives you 3 max level boosts for free when you buy each expansion. Sure some exceptions are stuff like gear (when equipped is account bound) or waypoints or hero points. So you do need to re-grind some stuff on new characters, but this stuff is all pretty easy to get again, and there are ways to speed it up when you have already unlocked it once (like doing high level fractals showers you with gear you can use on alts, or completing story missions gives you single-use teleports so your alts can use that to access new areas instantly). So there really is no loss in trying out a new class. It's a very alt-friendly game, but it never demands that you make alts, it's an option if you want gameplay variety but that's about it. Personally I've got my main mesmer completing endgame content and whatever, and if i want a break from him I've got a little asura elementalist that I'm casually compleeting the story and each zone on and taking my time. And then a revenant thats parked at wyvern patriach because why not. And I still have 2 max level boosts and enough tomes for a 3rd, need to find some more spots to park alts for free resources tbh.
Gw2 was my first real MMO, I played runescape for years and nothing else. My first character was a sylvari ranger that I deleted cause I ended up not liking the race or the class and thought I had to delete my character to make a new one for some reason. Made a thief and played only thief for like 2 years before I branched out and started trying every class. Now I have one of each class with 2-4 builds 😅 my "main" is mesmer and has been for the last 7 years but I spend a ton of time on my ranger too and havent really touched thief since I stopped playing her. Shes turned into my crafting character that sometimes leaves the mistlock sanctuary to do a provisioner token run. Gw2 is so forgiving with picking a class and playing multiple with all these builds has kept me playing for years
I just recently started playing and I’m enjoying the guardian it’s got so much healing and useful support skills and seems the closest to a traditional paladin playstyle, I bought the expansions and got the level 80 boosters but I want to experience what the game is like before I use it on an alt
As someone coming from WoW, I felt this and needed this. That holy trinity is engraved in my brain and I was looking for the same. I mainly played tank and healer, so obviously I was looking for similar roles here, but ofc, it doesn't "exist". So I'm just trying out all and watching videos to see which I like. Any suggestions would be great, I was a monk main on WoW, brew and mist. Also, guardian and resto druid.....let me know your suggestions, thanks!
My personal advice is, after trying to follow meta game: don't follow meta when you are chosing your class. Meta says that guardian is one of the best classes in game. I tried, oh my god, I tried, but I just can't play that... The problem: the weapon animations XD
your intro in this video really took me back to my gw1 days ranger is probably the weakest class in that game and i could do much more damage with my mesmer but at the end of the day i was picking up on my ranger because i liked the play style with that being said though when the dervish was released that became a tie with my ranger
so which class would you recommend for someone with heavily damaged nerves, that has delay on pressing buttons, so not fast combos, and not very close range, so he won't die a lot? cos perma dying is just not fun. thanks
Personally I'd say the necromancer would be a good choice. It's not very spammy as far as weapons are concerned but offers great defenses, Peta to tank, and good damage!
"pick what looks cool/fun" thats what i always do. Never cared for best or optimal or things like that. But the problem is that you cant know what is fun before playing it for a bit. The fantasy of the ranger is very appealing for me as well, but that is not necessary the only thing that would make the class fun to play. And yeah, i feel the ranger is kind of boring in gw2
So far i have played: Engineer, Holo, Scrapper, Mech Ranger, Soulbeast Warrior, Berserker Thief, Daredevil, Specter Guardian, Firebrand Necromancer, Scourge, Reaper and yesterday i created a Mesmer... so far i have not found a profession/elite i fell in love with. Never ever had such a hard time finding a "class" for me in any MMO i played before. And contrary to your video i think it is really hard and very time consuming to try out all those professions/specs, leveling up and gearing takes A LOT of time if you arent a full geared up and full on mounts and achievements, yet. Yes a verteran that has achieved everything in the game probably doesnt take a whole lot of effort to bringt a new character up en par, but as a new player?! WAY to timely! And in the end if it wasnt the right profession for you which can take months to find out it gets VERY frustrating after a couple of tries. From your video I was hoping to get some new insight on what class to play but sadly i am still stuck at the same question with no answer...
You can more easily try out the different classes in the Heart of the Mists (PvP Lobby), as you have all skills and traits unlocked, can easily swap if you want power or condi stats using the Amulets and there are golems and each class enemies you can practice against.
Funny thing. When i played gw1 i thought the necro was very cool and wanted to play it as a main but got bored of it and switched to ranger. Meanwhile on gw2 i was very hyped on making my ranger in the new game only to switch over to a necromancer and never leaving her.
I've been around for almost 2 month. The thing is that I'm doing all history in the released order. I have a Guardian to do most things, cuz can survive better. Have most all light armor professions, I like more they style... so I'm trying to adapt, to have more fun. But... I confess that doing living seasons before get the others mounts it's a little sad xD
My journey: "I'm a hunter in WoW so I'll play a ranger!" /makes 3 rangers at various points /comes back to the game years later "The easiest classes are necromancer, ranger and warrior! If you are new and returning AVOID mesmer, engineer and elementalist!" Got it! Anyway now my absolute favorite class is mesmer. Should have rocked mesmer from the start.
im still new so im still going around classes. i was playing necro then ranger then guardian until i settled with revenant. at first i was put off with the switching stances and energy conservation until i played it and said to myself.. yeah.. this is what my type of gameplay.
I don't really see how other games have affected my choice of class. Its just a matter of basics,do you like ranged or melee? do you want to be a glass cannon or you want to be a tanky dps class? Personally i go in with an open mind to new mmos i play,i don't compare classes to classes in other mmos. I always have 2 mains, one pure tank character and ranged dps.
Race really does matter for Fashion Wars 2, tho. A lot of Human MMORPGs (mainly men online roleplaying girls) have Human regret due to Norn cultural armor being superior. First character... Guardian, because I like playing tanks and healers... and Guardians are in a good place for everything LOL. Trying to learn Mesmer these days, though. Ranger? I love Shortbow Ranger because positioning matters so much more. Longbow Ranger is just boring, IMO. (Yeah, the horizontal progression makes it super easy to run alts. No class does everything, and sometimes you just need to cut loose with something your main is terrible at.)
@CaffeinatedDad Hi, i am thinking of buying GW2 1st tree expansion, up to End of Dragons, they have black friday sale, my question is, if i dont buy newest expansion (SOTO) do i get to play endgame like raids and dungeons and will there be players in older expansions, dont rly know how all this works since i only played WoW so far. Tnx
There is nothing wrong with wanting to play a core fantasy class that exist everywhere (not just WoW). I don't mind if people have fun playing a mage with a hammer, a pally with a bow, a rogue with a rifle, a hunter with a greatsword or a warrior with daggers, but that does not appeal to me. Making both traditional and non-traditional viable does not hurt anyone.
I played guardian to 80, then decided I want to try ele. Boosted ele and having a lot of fun going through heart of thorns as a catalyst. But every time i see one of the guides or a streamer playing warrior, thief or mesmser, I start to doubt my choice and fight the urge to make another character. I might never finish the game if it continues. :D
Mymistakes were quite different haha but my class picks were similar. I play mage, paladin and hunter in wow so I tried elementalist first, didn't vibe with it, then guardian which I found a bit too slow with too many ground target aoes so I tried ranger and barely played it. Completely different than what I was expecting for some. I got stuck on petty things like race and class combos with who gets what name. Since I learned that birthday rewards would be a big thing and you never want to delete them and you can't change your race, I was often overthinking it as well as "who gets my usual names and who doesn't? What race should they be since I can't ever delete them?"
I think gw2 trys way to hard to overt your expectations to what a class or weapon should. To its detriment. It wants to be so unique and different but sometimes people in a fantasy game want and expect certain things. Its really weird that gw2 has no standard mage type class
The best part of this guide: Don't assume things in this game based on other games. I would have never guessed a thief could become a mage through a specialization and completely change from cloak and dagger to literally shoot death beams with scepters. Or that my mage (elementalist) could be a tank. IDK this game is bonkers.
I feel like 10 hours of my playtime are just creating a new class and deleting it after 30 minutes; for example I wanna try the dragonhunter or the deadeye, but I really dont like the base Guardian and Thief, so I created multiple of both and always end of deleting them.
This game is super alt friendly and all classes are easy to play and get to level 80 now. You can't mess up; just pick something and go with it. If you play the game long enough you'll have at least 1 of each class anyways.
I can't shake the feeling that this video comes across like one of the "Dad talks" when you hit puberty. "You didn't get the girl? -- don't stress about it." "You tried hanging out with the nerds who like books and then you tried with the sporty, they're nothing like that." "Don't let that weigh too heavy on you when picking your girlfriend." "Keep in mind that same weapon has different skills, I use my slipper to smash a bug, in your mom's hand, it's a projectile."
I main a ranger for now but I use a hammer with axe/warhorn. Yep Untamed. But I also have one of each class BUT Guardian and thief, I just don't like it. Elementalist is fun - blow things up, can't beat that. I do really love Revenant also.
coming from wow i started with Mesmer, because i liked its idea of a ilussionary mage very much even though it is sad to be a bit difficult, i found it to be very interessting and rediculusly funny using 2h swords as a caster with illusionary skill shooting laserbeams and exploding duplicates of myself, i went completely apeshit ^^
one thing that does get skipped in most chose you character vids, you are going to hear your character a lot. Picking a race based on the voice you hear every time you loot some thing nice or use a skill might be important the 1000nd time you hear Oh shiny. Sylvari females sound like Vaugh axe from the Krytan herald :)
I've leveled two rangers to max one human and one norn. I started norn cause the fantasy of shapeshifting and having a pet always seemed cool to me same with melee rangers vs having your pet front line while you're in the back with the bow zzzz. Drizzt coolest ranger to bad they can't dual wield swords in this game yet. But yeah I switched out of Norn cause they are to big and bulky so a lot of transmogs dont look right. Humans ftw. Anyways I restarted on steam cause I wanted to play on my steam deck and this time around I'm probably going to main ether warrior cause they have the most weapons and dual swords plus bladesworn is a fun weeb class or guardian cause I played willbreaker and the mobility super fun.
3000 hours in, yet here i am again. I have all professions and just can't decide what to roll with. Hardest part coming back every time. I just staring at char selection or going in and out for hours. :D
Sadly if you like using a shield u really only have 1-2 classes Condi engi is my favorite class because the shield is decent on there because it dosnt hurt its dps as much until shortbow lol
@@CaffeinatedDad overall I settled on Mesmer because it was my absolute favorite class in the original game. I just run around with my great sword and nuke everything with purple lasers. What's not to love?
I’d also add that most stat builds are better as you know the game but can be really frustrating until you get better. The expansions are a lot harder, and that jump turned me off of a game for years. Doing some trailblazers, marauders, knights, etc was so critical to surviving long enough to know how to actually play the class and improve.
"Only you know how you play" i will remember that forever
Coincidentally, my first toon in WoW was a Hunter, and I then migrated my main to a Paladin, meanwhile in GW2 my first toon was a Ranger and I migrated my main to a Guardian.
bro.. exactly like me.. and the nice thing is that dragonhunter is the best mix of the two classes ☺️
Oddly enough in WoW I went from hunter to death knight. In gw2 I went from ranger to revenant lol
In WoW I went from shaman to mage to shaman and mage, in gw2 I went with elementalist and finally found my shaman-mage.
Great video that actually covers a lot of core philosophical issues that new players take quite some time to realize.
😍
Hey glad you liked it. I've always said avoid these pitfalls but I never explained my own ya know?
Use to play Guild Wars 1 as a (Fire) Elementalist. I remember you could grab skills from bosses and had skills to heal myself as I casted out spells. Then Guild Wars 2 comes out my first instinct was to choose what I was already comfortable with and go Ele. But it wasn't what I had in mind. Then HoT came out and I was switching elements, healing others while also giving boons it was fun. But then I tried Guardian when PoF came out and I love it. Love the firebrand.
Firebrand caught me in its grasp for a while. I loved how it played and the support I could provide for everyone. It's great fun!
My revenant was just a few hours old when I already started raiding with it.
few hours? how did you level fast, i started today
@@moejassimm the answer is in my original comment. With lvl up tomes.
are they hard to get on a new account@@tabe2278
One of the main points I think this video is making is that you don't have to commit to a "Main" right out of the gate because of how the horizontal progression system works.
Honestly... That sounds like how I should have put it in the first place... lol
Tyyy❤
I've always been a ranger too - always this way with most other MMOs too. Just feels the most fun.
Mood of the day and what i aim to do usually decide what to pick =)
GW2 have made sure that i don't have to stress about it.
I feel like all classes are challenging to start but once you get a handle on it it's great fun. Personally I love the mesmer! Especially the mirage
Excellent approach indeed :)
My only spanner in the works is that I, being a decent swordsman in the real world, like to play melee classes ... buuut ... being old and my hands getting stiffened up with arthritis and my visual acuity fading, I have found that, as the game pressed on into EoD, I simply cannot keep up and spend half my time swinging at air, as a mob I cannot see amidst all the visual flashy effects has moved away.
My down side was a mesmer main in gw1 and well now here we are.... still playing mesmer 20 years later
The really good thing about gw2 is that all classes have proper builds
All have good dps options - nearly all can do good offensive supports (all classes can give alac or quick! ), some have proper defensive supports, all classes can do very good open world builds and all classes can be very creative with creating unique and flavourful builds
You dont need to play optimally- just have fun!
I just must stress it that if you do more difficult team oriented content like raids, strike CMs or fractal CMs that you shouls bring a well functioning build that delivers the role you need to fill
Otherwise you could be the reason for wipes and nobody wants that ^^
But especially CMs are not that played by everybody so dont worry Hd have fun in any other gamemode
Gw2 is so forgiving with picking a class and playing multiple with all these builds has kept me playing for years
I just recently started playing and I’m enjoying the guardian it’s got so much healing and useful support skills and seems the closest to a traditional paladin playstyle, I bought the expansions and got the level 80 boosters but I want to experience what the game is like before I use it on an alt
i havent tried elementalist for 10 years because eveyrone said its too hard. Now i really enjoy playing it :D
Legit just released a video for you lol
th-cam.com/video/07GVuwmwLyI/w-d-xo.html
@@CaffeinatedDad I needed this!!! Thanks so much!
I picked Engineer. Love that class. The rifle sounds real cool when fired.
Now it throws a grenade lol
I've alternated mains per expansion, base game was ranger and ele, HoT was necro, PoF was warrior, EoD was guardian and SotO is mesmer
LOL you’re amazing at inserting those gif videos 😂😂
Can't wait to live out the fantasy of 'smashing bricks' lol XD 😂
Some people enjoy the simple life lool
so which class would you recommend for someone with heavily damaged nerves, that has delay on pressing buttons, so not fast combos, and not very close range, so he won't die a lot? cos perma dying is just not fun.
Agreed! I make the note that you can trial them a bit in the pvp lobby!
So far i have played:
Engineer, Holo, Scrapper, Mech
Ranger, Soulbeast
Warrior, Berserker
Thief, Daredevil, Specter
Guardian, Firebrand
Necromancer, Scourge, Reaper
and yesterday i created a Mesmer...
so far i have not found a profession/elite i fell in love with.
A sneaky asura thief is peek fantasy my guy and ill fight anyone who disagrees with me.
Kneecaps are in danger
I've been around for almost 2 month. The thing is that I'm doing all history in the released order. I have a Guardian to do most things, cuz can survive better. Have most all light armor professions, I like more they style... so I'm trying to adapt, to have more fun. But... I confess that doing living seasons before get the others mounts it's a little sad xD
My first char is elementalist, and oh boy was I wrong, it’s a battle mage with light armor and fight in melee!
Lol I love that you call it a battlemage!
My journey:
"I'm a hunter in WoW so I'll play a ranger!"
/makes 3 rangers at various points
/comes back to the game years later
"The easiest classes are necromancer, ranger and warrior! If you are new and returning AVOID mesmer, engineer and elementalist!"
Got it!
I picked Ranger in Betaweekends and im still glad i picked it.
In GW1 Necro was my fav tho
As a former Machinist main on FFXIV, Engineer is the perfect class
I don't really see how other games have affected my choice of class.
Its just a matter of basics,do you like ranged or melee? do you want to be a glass cannon or you want to be a tanky dps class?
Personally i go in with an open mind to new mmos i play,i don't compare classes to classes in other mmos.
I always have 2 mains, one pure tank character and ranged dps.
Looking at some of the characters in GW2, you best advice is to spend time on the body of your character ... everything else can be changed.
Been playing a mirage Mesmer... Enjoying it but also looking forward to getting enough points to try the dagger chucking one too
Thanks, I've been stressing. This helped out lol
Glad I could help
I played guardian to 80, then decided I want to try ele. Boosted ele and having a lot of fun going through heart of thorns as a catalyst. But every time i see one of the guides or a streamer playing warrior, thief or mesmser, I start to doubt my choice and fight the urge to make another character. I might never finish the game if it continues. :D
Is that a human elementalist?! It looks amazing!! What armor is it that he's wearing?
Yeah, gotta agree ranger (at least core) is pretty dull to play for me also.
Yeah I can give it that fault. I love a solid caster mage of some sort
i reallÿ like your content man, please keep it up.
I started ranger but didn't like it's elite professions. Now I go mechanic.
Mechanist is alot of fun and always a welcome choice!
Staff catalyst is my jam
It's a ton of fun! One of my favorite builds!
I went straight to necro at launch. My main is still necro now.
Sometimes you get it right off the gate!
one thing that does get skipped in most chose you character vids, you are going to hear your character a lot. Picking a race based on the voice you hear every time you loot some thing nice or use a skill might be important the 1000nd time you hear Oh shiny. Sylvari females sound like Vaugh axe from the Krytan herald :)
You can just switch it off
So to summarize:
1. Pick warrior
2. Feel the adrenaline coursing through your veins
3. Never touch any other class or video game ever
Haha I am just here thinking about trying out leveling a warrior to get back to the game after a pause.
You make me sure that it is THE good decision.
I thought I was doing it wrong playing a lot of alts and I really like playing different classes.
Sadly if you like using a shield u really only have 1-2 classes
Condi engi is my favorite class because the shield is decent on there because it dosnt hurt its dps as much until shortbow lol
I tried elementalist and stopped because I thought I was going to give myself carpal tunnel.
It does require a bit to be sure. I overall I throughly love it!
@@CaffeinatedDad overall I settled on Mesmer because it was my absolute favorite class in the original game. I just run around with my great sword and nuke everything with purple lasers. What's not to love?
Make your own mistakes, get your own experience. Don't let anybody talk you into anything different.
I'm trying to choose between spellbreaker and willbringer
The problem is even bigger in guild Wars 2, considering ALL classes are super fun and viable.
Thief is just plain bad
@@missk1697 bad for noobs. I've seen a lot of good players rocking with every elite spec of thief in the game.
72 Characters *grin* and I bounce back and forth between them all #Altaholic
I’d also add that most stat builds are better as you know the game but can be really frustrating until you get better. The expansions are a lot harder, and that jump turned me off of a game for years.
Doing some trailblazers, marauders, knights, etc was so critical to surviving long enough to know how to actually play the class and improve.
Untamed ranger with short box and axes. Funniest and solo everything
So you would say ret paladin is what in gw?
I would say Elementalist is closer to an Enhance Shaman in WoW
