    Many different designs for each type of project are also included. For example, there are hundreds of designs th-cam.com/users/postUgkxb2mhCug-GkCWrq69Ce2I0nM0D4QpxAqu for outdoor buildings, from small sheds all the way up to a complete stable. Choose whatever type of shed or storage house is right for you. Pick from fancy ones or more utilitarian designs.

    Brilliant ! I'm glad I found your video. My wife made it known to me that I MUST remove all my used building materials this weekend. yeah ---- so I am making plans to build an awning , like yours. I am going to use left over floor tile on the roof. I'll send a picture when I'm done. Cheers from Texas

    Well done Chris. Looking after your Daughter like a Dad does. Ignore the trolls, they've probably never done a good turnfor anyone in their life. I hate self opinionated supposed 'builders' whose work I've witnessed and dispaired at. Keep doing what you're doing. There's many right ways of doing things, not just the one.

      +Nick Carrick Nonsense-you probably don't like the fact that this gives ordinary folks a chance not to get ripped off by over priced builders!!! The job is solid, watertight and was key in helping to sell the house. SEE VID ONE to see what it was like.

    • @the-colonel9809
      @the-colonel9809 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Chris Longhurst You could look at this two ways as you say this gives ordinary folks a chance not to get ripped off by over priced builders? good builders/roofers have overheads which are priced into all jobs/contracts so they will cost more this doesn't mean they are getting ripped off if you are using a company with a good reputation. I would feel more ripped off paying less for a job which fails after a few years due to poor workmanship and have to pay twice.

      This was a job done for my daughter (see first vid where I explain the reasons) The problem, she has no money to hire a contractor and so I simply helped her out saving her money...I will do another vid shortly using new materials as a neighbour has asked me to do one for them. I actually show one I did for the next doors where I used new materials, see end of the vid (my daughter sold her house as a result of the new porch see first vid!) • @ricktherecorder4416
    @ricktherecorder4416 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The return of lead into the chase should be at least 20mm. 25mm is generally recommended. While the inner part of the repointing can be mortar, the outer 10-12mm is better done in lead sealant which will be resistant to cracking and water penetration. The bottom of the lead should be held by (wall-attached) stainless steel clips at between 300 and 500mm centres, depending on exposure, otherwise it is liable to lift and/or sag. As has been mentioned the flashing should be at least Code 4, in lengths not exceeding 1.5m.

  • @lukehillwood

    The bolts, although it was a small roof and didn't hold much weight, were missing a key feature (at least you didn't mention it). After drilling the hole through the timber and into the wall you want to clean it and then fill it with resin. Once the bolt has been fixed and the resin set (although not entirely important with this build) you can then thread the nut on holding the plate in place. Over the years, the roof will move, causing the bolt to push and pull and will wear away the brick it is set in.
    You want to bed the tiles on, not point them up. Bedding the times allows for a greater bite of the tiles and a cleaner job, that pointing up after is nothing more then superficial, it will wall apart in no time.
    The lead, by eye alone, looked longer then 1500mm long (1.5m) Code 4 lead should never go beyond that as it will split. (although it is outside the house and not overly important, if you are going to show people how to do this, teach them how to do it right.)
    You want more then 10mm if lead leading into the roof, you want to double that at least, it will pull out. The pointing done afterwards did not look like it was pushed to the back, again, superficially done. Okay, the wedges you put in was right- ish but you want to feed the lead into the joint until it touches the mortar then bend upwards, this will give you your needed length for the wedge so that when you beat it into place it won't push beyond the flashing.
    You want to use patination oil on the lead after you've finished, that lead will stain the roof when the weather gets to it.

      elmer fudd I am a roofer, British, so we work within the same industry and a perfectionist.
      Well, I started out as a roofer, 5yrs and now 5 years general builder (jack of all trades, master of roofing.)
      Yes, I do pitched and flat. My favourite tiles are small hand made tiles. I torch and GRP as well.
      I build houses from top to bottom and I stumbled across this video, okay? This man has made a tutorial to enrich these humble viewers with his wisdom. Doesn't mean he wasn't perfect.
      Now, from what I can remember, I stated that I am aware that this isn't an important build as its just a porch with no entry into the house ... however, if you're going to do this, teach people to do this thoroughly or they'll end up hiring me to fix it.

    As a DIY'er I found it very informative. Well Done. I was left with two questions:
    1. Why did you stagger the tiles, on my Marley Redbrick interlocking tiles, they have been installed in straight lines. Is there a NEED to stagger?
    2. Did you NAIL each tile? If not, what is the guide on when and when not to add nails?
    Keep it up.
    Chess

    • @foundationgood123
      @foundationgood123  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Chess for the input, I staggered the joints to match the rest of the houses and existing roof of the house. It doesn't matter how they are laid as they interlock. It is better to nail each tile but if there are any future problems they are hard to remove. I noticed on the main roof they weren't all nailed however!

    You shouldn't use cement mortar to point in the lead, as its acidic and will corrode the lead over time. Use a neutral cure sealant - available at all good builders merchants and lead suppliers such as Calders. That boarding will be rotten in two years with water leaching into the top end grain as it was fixed with end grain untreated.

    Considering the nature of the used materials this appeared a satisfactory end result. The lead flashing was especially well attended to.

    It obvious that Chris is a skilled builder with standards - there might be the slight comment for nitpicking but considering it is an off-the-cuff video - it is excellent.
    Looking forward to EVO redman video mixing glue with anal we call it stuck in the Sh*t.

      +edd1toyou Thank you, yes I could do it differently by using all new materials, but I was saving my daughter money. I decided to share this vid to help other people who have a very small budget to see how they can save money and still have a good out come by using recycling of used materials. Thats the purpose of the vid!!
