BIGGEST MOMENT YET IN CABIN LIFE

- I've had the biggest moment yet in my cabin life. I am learning how to renovate and build things here on the channel. I have a ton to learn and you have all been a big help. In this video, I have a lightbulb moment that I believe will have a huge impact going forward.

Pre starting screws is the best idea. By the way, some of these guy's will act like they know more then you no matter how much you know. Sometimes learning on your own can be more satisfying then learning from others how to do it. You're doing a great job figuring it out. Thanks for the videos.
Have you thought of building a storage bench on the outside wall that could be filled with firewood from outside? Insulate it and the access door outside, and insulate the lid at least and you would have firewood storage inside out of sight, and have a bench seat for sitting around the woodstove.
Lowes and Home Depot down here carry Spax screws. They are designed to carry weight 90 degrees to the insertion direction. They have larger heads on them, about the size of a US Nickel. You should add two of these Spax screws to the bottom of your 2x4 spindles. This would give them some strength. If you ever fell into the rail, you don’t want just deck screws holding you back. I believe they are referred to as washer head Power Lags, etc.
Maybe you should build a small shed for your snow mobile. Nothing crazy, just something to keep it out of the elements. And maybe a little stove to warm it up a couple of hours before you leave. Just a thought.
Filling a Canadian Tire bucket with splits is pretty much the most Canadian thing ever.
Only if they are used to cook some poutine
i sort thought siting on a Canadian Tire bucket while ice fishing and talking about hockey while eating poutine and drinking a some Tim Hortons coffee or a Labatt's Blue was what the CIA determined
@@TheKlokan44 lmao! Doesn’t get more Canadian than that !!!!
🤣🤣🤣👍🏻👍🏻
I would’ve definitely dried out the wood rounds and put a sealant on them to use as a household thing, also I would definitely like to see some type of protective wall covering fire resistant surrounding wood burning stove where the stack of logs be
Put some bracing/fixing at the top sides of the rail otherwise the leverage from leaning/falling on it could easily snap the lower screws.
The railing came out great. It's amazing how owning a home teaches you how to become a builder, plumber and an electrician. Especially with todays prices. Keep the videos coming!
Great job, Jay! If you aren't careful, you're going to make a master carpenter out of yourself!
Side note, Jay...
Make sure you L- bracket the rail to the wall as well as to the stair rail to marry the structure together..I noticed everything move and do the funky chicken when you hand sawed the stair rail.
You might also consider using lag bolts for strength and stability.
Here's a tip. Pre-start your screws in the lumber then put lumber in place and sink the screws. Another tip. Screws are not meant for permanent construction applications because they are brittle and break easily while nails are a softer metal and bend more easily thus allowing for minor movement of expansion and contraction. I would put carriage bolts through the lower handrail supports, bolting them into the floor joist and not relying upon 4 little screws to do the job. I've witnessed exterior decks collapse because of screw failures. When it comes time for working on the outside deck I would suggest you dig holes deep enough to go below the permafrost and pour concrete piers to mount the deck structure onto especially if a living dwelling will be built onto it. Screwing a deck to the existing structure is not recommended. I spent nearly 40 years in the building trades so I've seen my share of undesirable building methods. Go get um and be safe!
Excellent advice. I noticed his steps were a little wobbly.
Yep was about to comment this, get those screws started for the balusters on the floor before taking them to height, use clamps if you can get them in. Looks good though. Agree on carriage bolts too for the balusters, much more strength than a couple screws and can't be physically pulled out when shearing forces are applied
"temp" screw, adjust, and move on...
Yup on the carriage bolts….
Beat me to it
Oh my gosh ... A sight for sore eyes ❤ safety first for all sleeping in the Loft.. what a wonderful job seeing this railing... well done JAY 🐕❤
Jay, thank you for putting up that rail! I was having nightmares of you falling off!
Jay, I noticed last video, you were worried about your 2200 W Honda gennie...My neighbour gave me an oversized insulated dog house with a door front and back to use as a cover for my 3000 W inverter YAMAHA gen.. After I start my gen, plug in the wires, I roll it up ( small 2 ft ramp) into the dog house. Both doors open...act like a fireplace..front door like a draft, back door like a flue. Rain and snow doesn't come in, quiet ...you could just a cut a door on each side of your generator box (with hinges), one side for exhaust, the other for air intake....keep at 'er....
Nice way to recycle big dog house.
Love seeing your excitement. Attach the rail to the stair rail. It will make both more stable. Also attach the rail to the wall by the bed to add stability.
Jay, I am sure you have heard it by now, but you need to tie that new railing into the wall and anchor it more securely. Someone trips and falls it that, the whole thing is going over.
Jay, I agree with someone that said you need the proper bolts for your railing near the bed.
Jay that chimney oven is amazing. It adds so many cooking options in one unit.
Yes. And i don't have to watch over the food.
@@jaylegere Wow, I could actually smell that chicken roasting...…oh wait, it's our chicken in the oven - LOL! Loving the railing!
Yeah a chimney oven is pretty cool option I never had seen before this channel.
Every time you talk about clamps, it reminds me of the character on Futurama who talks about his clamps.
I was hollering “use clamps” and I guess you finally heard me. Looks good.
Love watching you learn and grow man. You're such a sincere, genuine dude. I hope Crystal appreciates what a great man she has. Most guys would love to hang out with you and have a beer and work on your cabin with you. That's what makes your channel great.
Awesome comment. Thx Jeremy
I mentioned to you last video and I’ll mention it one more time. When using a saw that draws that much current instantly all you need to do is switch eco throttle off on your Honda. That’s why it is there. When finished turn eco throttle back on. Great video as always Jay. Plus you should check your draw on power while cutting.
Yeah, but the Battery(the power source) is a pretty decent regulator/capacitor for the generator. If you go Generator to Jackery(power supply) to saw, you should be good. I have a CPAP that I take camping, and batteries are pretty good at absorbing the jumps in power usage.
@@Publikwerks 30 yr carpenter/ builder...1st question my repair guy asked, when bringing tools with electrical issues..."were you using a generator"....I tried to avoid direct generator plug in, at all costs, smartest thing, if setting up a cabin, set up deep cycle battery storage that the generator, solar panels, wind turbine charge and run a 12v to 110 converter off of...that way, constant, steady source of electricity...because your tools always break, when you using them...😆😆
wow no need for parent mode.
Fantastic viewing. I get excited when l see you have posted. 😊😊🇬🇧

Clamps, Clamps and more Clamps, don't forget those dang Clamps Jay 😂! Love the cabin!
Clamps for life
Love the work you do Jay, I've missed the guitar intro! I'm so so glad you added it on this one. It's so peaceful and suits your channel perfectly. Keep it up man, the cabin is looking incredible
THE OLD INTRO MUSIC IS BACK, HALLELUJAH JAY. THE CABIN IS LOOKING RADICALLL AHHH!!
I could watch this all night long!! Great job with the railing. Hurray for clamps!😂
Heyy Jay rails looks great ,you did an amazing job thanks for sharing stay safe
Love the railing, it brings the whole staircase looking finished off. Good job.
Funny how things work. If we had to do this type of work for a living, in these type of conditions, most of us would dread it. But being it is for recreation, just plain fun! Keep up the great content Jay. Love your passion
We all love how you discover ways to make your life easier. And your excitement when you make these revelations, I think most men would want to play that down but kudos to you buddy for your humble ways. The idea of putting screws in place first, part way, then just finishing screwing them into place seems like another good idea. 73 y o woman with no related experience other than watching other YTubers learning these things too. We all just adore you and enjoy your work so much! Good on ya friend 🥰👵🐶 Ottawa fan
Good job on the railing! You wanted suggestions for the 2x6s. Take one and make a top cap on your new railing. It will match your handrail up the stairs and also strengthen the joint in front of your bed! You’re doing great and learning a lot!!
Glue, clamp, then screw or nail, much more secure that way.
I see a new Jay Legere cabin video in my feed, I click on it right away!
I am no carpenter for sure, but I always use the hex/torx head, (or square head) screws when doing a project. They make my life SO much easier than the normal phillip's head screws with all the rounding and stripping out of them.
Jay, you always make me smile. You’re one of the most relatable, funny, humble and joyful creators on TH-cam. You’re just human like the rest of us and that makes you so special.
I Absolutely Love the new staircase and guard railing!!! Great job Jay!!!
Watching you go through so many of the same realizations I have. Nothing is ever common sense the first time you do it. If you haven’t been shown, the only way to learn is through struggles and mistakes. Looking great!
Thanks Adam
Now you understand clamps and you have a growing love. Come back next year and tell us of your adventures with clamps and how many you have. Anything less than forty isn't true love.
It is a total joy watching your vids. Never a boring moment and I love watching you figure things out as you go. All I can hear in my head now is "CLAMPS!" It'll be a new mantra for me to remind me to keep thinking, keep figuring things out and learning.. you are a great motivator and I love seeing what you accomplish.
Thanks Rachel
I like how you use the twigs and tiny branches as kindling. No need to waste it. ✌️🐾🐾🇱🇷
Great job Jay! And those clamps were a big lightbulb moment. Saves so much time
For someone havn never done what uv been doing lately u shur do a great job Jay. The rail turned out nicely done. Tyfs God bless you
Thanks Debbie

So peaceful, I look forward to your videos every week!
I love seeing friends have victories with their projects. Excellent video. Good job. We sure miss you at caveman week.
Next year caveman month
I bet we’re going to see clamps on every video now. Awesome. Been watching you for awhile now.
Well done mate great to see you got the rail fitted!!
I recommend a thing called a kreg jig. It allows you to pre drill holes in boards and has a special drill bit that’s narrow at the top for the screw and wider at the base for the screw head to nicely sit. It’s like a clamp, put the board into the clamp and feed your drill bit in and it will perfectly angle it. Idk I’m bad at explaining. Watch a TH-cam video on it and you’ll see what I mean. I loved using the kreg jigs in woods class
I love your enthusiasm about how you figure things out. Your cabin is starting to look so amazing! I cannot wait for the finished product!
Love your Aha moments! 🎉 You love to learn! You are real! The chicken looked delicious! The CLAMPS are the BOSS! Crystal will love the loft rail!
Agree with an earlier post below regarding stabilizing the railing by securing to wall. Top railings need to withstand force of 200 pounds. At least that's what it is in the US not sure what the rating is in Canada.
The railing looks awesome I would put lag bolts in the bottom to make it a little bit more secure. Instead of just regular screws, the four screws will hold it but the lag bolts will really secure it. In the 4 2-4’s
One word: skylight! 😊
Becoming one of my favorite channels
Thank you, Canadian Guy
Jay!!!!! It's Bridge!!! I LOVE THIS!!!! I'm so happy to see you are starting the remodel!!!!!!! My wife and I finished the inside of our pole barn home about two weeks ago, so I am a bit behind on my video watching!! We are now have been doing the outside projects!! LoL What a great surprise and joy to see this project!!! It looks fantastic!!! I am excited to see where it goes from here!! Think about getting a good battery powered circular saw. They are fantastic!! Get a couple of extra batteries for it and you are good to go!!! Great video!!!!!! Keep goin, Sir!!!!!
Bridge
for the 2 X 6, you can make a wood shed, it will help dry your wood for winter
A woodworker can't have too many clamps. My uncle opened my eyes. And there are so many types. Changed it all. Vises on a workbench are the same thing. I know the feeling. Keep up the good work.
great job on he stairway Jay and hooray for ya blue clamps. It gets real better every day you are at the Cabin. cheers
Clamps?? lol yes!!! Your best friend.
Almost 200 000 Jay. Greetings from Belgium. 👍
Slowly but surely
I would definitely use lag screws for the supports and go through the joist from the inside ouI wouldn’t trust drywall screws…. is lag bolts would be better…great content tho!… good luck and have fun!
That roasted chicken is criminally underseasoned
"Criminally underseasoned"
I chuckled and approve of this comment.
Hahah
Better under seasoned than under cooked, especially with chicken.
Please ask your self the three questions before posting.
Here's a way-out-there idea. Build yourself a new deck, then put a railing around the outside like you did for your first tent. In summer you can sit out there and enjoy the scenery. In winter, you can put a bottomless tent up on top of the fence to enclose the space (viola! Temporary mud room and/or enclosed storage.) Not sure of the legalities involved, but it's just a deck without the tent on top.
Suggestion: a few feet above your woodstove put an expanded metal shelf to stack kindling on to really dry your wood for easier fire start ups.
It can be on a wood frame since that is what you are comfortable with. Expanded metal allows the hot air to pass through to the firewood.
Looks like it’s Jay for breakfast here in 🇦🇺 today😂. Great update and the balustrade looks great.
Hello from Northern Canada
Suggestion : Put a 4x4 (3.5x3.5) on your table at the left of your Dewalt saw.
Use the 6 by 6's to frame a nice little gazebo/lookout for the warmer months...screen it in so you can sit outside and have supper watching the sun over the water....with no bugs...lol. Oh, and starting the screws into the wood before setting them in place helps too. :)
Love it. You will live out there in the summer❤️
Awesome Job, Jay. Love seeing the Northern Lights on your videos.
Well Jay so glad to see you getting the cabin safe for future use, and eating good!! 😊
Uh oh, now he’s glamping, I mean clamping 😂
I always love seeing the northern lights and the stars twinkling in the night sky! Your little cabin in the woods is coming along nicely, Jay. Looking forward to seeing your next project. Take care.
Where did you learn to be such a great problem solver? Great job, Jay!
My mom.
not to be a Debbie downer, but there is a lot of tips and tricks to learn bud! I wish I could remember videos for you to reference for typical carpentry, but go down a wormhole a couple of days on TH-cam for anything "building" and things are gonna get way easier for you. I've watched almost all of your videos for the last year and had suggestions while you where building or doing something, from here on out ill say them or point you in the right direction. love the videos brother, it bothers me its not your land and your decision, you're building a better cabin for someone else, which is noble, but Canada is going south quicker than the US... I hope you get to enjoy this place to your dying days and your children after that... at this point its all we all can hope for
Great job on the rail Jay, always a pleasure watching your videos!! Looking forward to the future projects. "Batman Begins" lol
He does
Knock-knock. Who's there? Clamps.
Another thing... if you pre-drill a pilot hole in the board you are attaching, your screws will pull that board in nice and tight vs. screwing through the board you're attaching and never tighten up! Best to have 2 drills set up. One for the drill and one for the screws.
Lol....clamps!.....I have clamps!. Just as I was asking where are your clamps? Keep up the good work....🍺🍺
I love seeing the transformation to your cabin each time!
Jay love your videos and enjoy watching them. May the lord bless and protect you Jay working on firewood and cabin
Must feel very proud of your work Jay. 🎉🎉
Hi Jay. Regarding the 6-foot new wood. You can build a deck on the backside of the cabin; an outdoor wet clothe line; an outdoor porch bin to hold large barrels or large storage items; old carpet to hang and needs beaten to get clean; a fence. Best of luck.
What a fast learner you are! The railing looks very professional all because of your discovery of clamps 🗜
Jay, you are too funny!😂 Always enjoy your vlogs.
Crystal’s bed covering is so colorful, adds a lot to the cabin.
This little cabin is starting to look like home!! Love it! Cheers from Manitoba!!!
Hi from the NWT
I can tell how neat and clean you are👍 cabin is looking better & better already. You have an infectious laugh😂😂
For your next chicken, I recommend seasoning it at home with 1 tsp salt per pound of chicken and let it “dry brine” in your fridge at home the day before you head to the cabin. Add some lemon juice to the outside with some dried herbs and pepper, a little oil on the skin and the spent lemon halves inside then bung it in. It is a wonderful thing and you will love it.
Garlic pieces just under the skin on the chicken adds an amazing flavor. Also rub some olive oil all over chicken before you season it!
Great job !!!!! Love the railing 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼😁👍🏽
I’m sitting here at 10:20 on the video screaming”CLAMPS, CLAMPS, CLAMPS! LIKE I SAID BEFORE, GET SOME CLAMPS! Lol. I told you about clamps in the comments weeks ago when you were building the staircase. How’s the best way to get your attention on the advice you ask for? Looks good though, but check the manual for correct placement of the clamp on your miter saw. Lovin’ this cabin content as much as the tent.
I suggest clamps, lots of clamps of as many sizes as you can find. Sorry I was premature. You got it.
I used my leftover 2x6 for a deck, love your videos man
So glad to see a rail up at last! I would be tempted to hang curtains there too, to keep the bed space extra cosy.
dont forget the carpenters best tool, the pencil 🙂
well done joy have watched you from the start how you have progressed is amazing keep it up good luck from the garden of england
I think the thing I appreciate about your channel so much is how honest you are. We've all been there. The clamps part is very relatable. A lot of TH-camrs would just edit out mistakes. I like learning with you. Thanks for the content. ❤
Love the fact your so excited, nice job, now everyone will be safe, and the dog won’t give me a heart attack getting too close to the edge
It's definitely safer than before. But Jay, the balusters should be on the other side of the ledger board. I'm still jealous that you have this hidden diamond in the middle of the woods.
The railing looks great. If you ever plan to have young children visit the cabin, you may want to make sure the gap between balusters is 4" or less to prevent heads from getting stuck between. That's a code requirement in the states.
Jay have you seen the video where a guy uses a length of chain and a bungee cord to create a loop around a cross section, then splits it. The chain keeps all the splits together so he doesn't have to pick them up individually. Pretty ingenious.
Puppy is safe upstairs now!😍🇨🇦
Lol !!! Years ago when starting to do projects i would have my wife hold stuff for that extra set of hands…then one day a long long time i discover quick set clamps…. I then said to my wife you have been replaced by a clamp she was a little insulted but then she realized awesome I don’t need to be involved anymore !!! Oh by the way using your square as a guide for a circ saw is a great hack, perfect cuts in many situations.
Maybe a bigger generator shed??? Love the content, I get my cabin dreams fulfilled by your channel!! 👍🇨🇦😎
When you’re using 3 inch screws it’s always good to have another cordless drill with a counter sink bit in it and pre-drill your holes. Makes it easier to run your screws in.
Jay you are doing well on the rail at the top of the stairs, all you need now is some lovely light paint to brighten up the cabin. Loving your video's. Love from Caroline Butler from UK ❤
