The game works and looks just great now. I'm not sure if you've played the game recently, but it's generally really good now. It just got a bad rep in its initial phases which stuck with a lot of players, though the game was eventually fixed.

CHISEL SMITH Well, I can't say how well it's going to run on every comp. All I can say is that it worked very well on my comp, and I don't see why my rig is too special. Of course, it's not perfect, but expecting a game with the scope of Rome 2 to run perfectly is unreasonable. But in answer to your question, it's been running great for me since I bought it about half a year ago. Honestly, I think it deserves another chance from gamers.
I srsly still think about this footage all the time. I remember how excited I was after I saw this. THIS is what total war should be and we still haven't experienced what was shown in this footage. I love rome 2, especially with DEI. Its probs my fav total war. But Jesus Christ, if the game ever looked like this. I would of never stopped playing it.

Rome 2 is really bad. It was at launch and continues to be. It has a terrible HP system that ruin the pace and consistency of battles (something exacerbated with DEI actually). Awful morale, no terrain advantage, no tactics, a terrible army system and a lot more also make this game an abysmal showing compared to Shogun 2 and any game before it. The worst part is that this game is the base for all subsequent games and so there hasn’t been a good total war since Shogun 2.
+SlyBiffrons Rome 2 was awesome. Only problem I had with it was how long the turns took and the bad siege AI. Great game other wise. CA always keeps updates coming. Also there are no games like total war games.

Also, during the historical battle, you don't land *all* of your forces on the beach anymore, only a few of them. You also don't get that cool cinematic intro anymore, which I thought was stupid to not include. If Teutoburg's is still there, then why not Carthage's?

I really want to enjoy it, since I love the setting, and I loved Rome 1, but I simply can't. Does Attila improve the combat at all? I'm hoping Warhammer will, but you never know.

That's because you were playing the campaing mode. The video is showing one of the historical battles available in the game which is the invasion of Carthage.
He says that this is the capital city of one of his great enemies. When I attack the capital city of Rome and Carthage I want to see their greatest army trying to protect their city with strategic moves. The only thing I see is some mobs staying in the walls while I bombard them with my ballistas... BTW you can't place catapults when you are protecting your city in custom battles OMG!

Oh man I love all the pre-rendered "in engine" trailers for Total War Warhammer. I'm so glad to see that so much time and effort is being put into promotional materials instead of the actual game.
What CA could have done: Find Europa Barbarorum and Roma Surrectum 2 modders. Ask them about their vision of a Roman Total War game. Ask them for all their resources, etc. Have online polls way before development starts about what features people want in Total War games. Have all the major Total War TH-camrs, reviewers, etc. tell you what they expect from a Total War game. Find the guy who made the original Rome soundtrack and get him to remix them or redo a sound track. Make the game with all your information and think about what all the features would do to the game. Release a closed beta in September and have testing go on until February. Redo entire parts of the game if you truly think that they are bad. Release the game in March, with all the now amazing features in it and all the testing. Have all the DLC and Ceasar in Gaul already in. Have a feature in it where players can make multiplayer maps/historical battles and release those on Steam. Have it so that people can trade the maps and scenario's and also sell them if they want. Keep part of the selling price yourself. In June, release more DLC with an entire new side campaign, followed by some new units/factions DLC packs. And lastly, build a giant throne with all the money you got. What CA did: Ouch...
bastek1232 Still, the minimum they could have done was wait for the release of the game and release it after patch 10 is out, keeping it in beta until then. The game would still have some flaws, but then we would have been more forgiving since the release product would be better and the patch cycle would start from that point in time, not the early beta product :(
As a future game developer currently at university studying this sort of thing, I shall try to respond for them. 1. Why should they? Those resources are old as hell by now; Rome I's art assets, as good as the game looked back in the day, look like garbage now. Rome II's models and other art look far superior in contrast (and don't refer me to that famous image of those weird Hastati faces; that's an LOD draw distance bug that was fixed on the first month of release). CA also probably wanted to make their own game, with their own team who have known each other over the last few years working on previous Total War titles, stuff whoever made Europa Barbarorum/Roma Surrectum 2; they've probably got their own work outside of modding by now, with their own vision and probably little to no real experience on how to work within their new engine properly (the one CA made for Empire). However, it doesn't hurt for CA to take reference from how their mods actually played for research on how Rome II could play, but it shouldn't be exactly the same otherwise it'd just be the same experience all over again, bar with better visual and aural pleasure. 2. Nothing wrong with that, I agree. However, some things that fans ask for can prove to be near impossible (e.g. one fan asked and made a plan of, if there were to be a Rome II (before announcement), an extremely, far too complex way of making agents have their own real-time missions when you initiated a task for them on the campaign maps in order to make cinematics useful. In theory it'd work, it'd be amazing to see, but far too much work for what was worth). 3. Meh. Not needed. 4. They know who Jeff van Dyke is, they've even met him, unlike most of us. They also probably know how he works (whether or not that's a reason for why they didn't pick him, no one other than someone from CA will know). For some reason, they picked Richard Beddow. Don't know why, I liked his work for Empire and some of Rome II's (e.g. "Celtic Air", "Battle Theme - Rome", etc), some people don't like his work, totally subjective. Its CA's baby, they can pick who they want to do their soundtrack. Jeff van Dyke worked on Shogun 2's, so they are probably still in contact. Maybe they believed Richard Beddow's style of film, cinematic music would fit their goal to create a more cinematic feel to their new game. 5. But they must have done that obviously, that's how you make a game; you have to plan things, and how gameplay will be affected by things being cut/added. Whether or not you know it will create a better game, you probably won't know or realise until you start beta, but even then those beta testers may not give you all the insight that people outside from development may raise. They may even give bad advice (it's still a very useful phase though, obviously. You can't not have beta). 6. CA + SEGA are obviously looking for money; the gaming industry is a multi-million dollar business, and growing. There is a popular view in the gaming industry (and it's somewhat true for games that cost £30+) that releasing betas (closed or open) decreases sales. One reason is it can potentially decrease hype, therefore fewer sales. Also, sometimes you simply can't re-do entire parts of the game if they're integral, as it would mean taking even more time. There is always a deadline, not meeting that deadline once or more than once can cripple your organisation (especially in the VFX industry, where businesses work for roughly 1 million for 1 month, and have to spread that money across 50 or more digital artists, maintenance and still ask for them to work overtime). 7. The deadline was set and probably did they either did not succeed in renegotiating, or they felt they believed in themselves yet could do it on time, therefore did not ask. Or, maybe, they felt that what they had was good enough for an initial release and that they'd improve it over time (what they're doing now. Rome II was almost near impossible for me to keep playing, it is now fun (or, for people who still don't like it, at the very least bearable). 8. Nope. CA's business model for Caesar in Gaul + Hannibal at the Gates was actually sound. I'd be a proud dev to have thought of a simple way to make more money like that for what they are worth (Hannibal at the Gates is a great DLC campaign, had so much fun with that over the last 5 or 6 days. Caesar in Gaul, on the other hand, was a bit small. I also believe that these more compact campaigns should have some historical texts or cinematics to teach/engage the player more with that time period. The grand campaign is there for complete sandbox play with all factions, these smaller campaigns should focus a bit more on the exploits of that time, but still allow the player to have the autonomy to do what they want. For example, make more cinematics like the ones they did for Teutoburg Forest and the intro to this video (which was cut out for some reason, a real shame as it looked great)). Releasing these DLC campaign packages allows them to carry on working on Rome II (funding devs to carry on patching the game, as there is value in the game to be had. More support for a game encourages sales. However, the entire team obviously doesn't work on support; there's always a section planning for the future), and injects small sums of money to keep them partially afloat. 9. What, like the map creator + Steam Workshop? They're working on it. Not sure about historical battles, but definitely multiplayer battles. They did it for Shogun 2. They could definitely not be able to sell them though. Consumers making money on assets that they have made? I'm sorry but that is totally, *TOTALLY* out of the question and a silly idea. I don't think people would shell out for custom maps either, they'd infact complain about how mods/custom features are becoming monetised, setting a bad precedent for the future of the gaming industry (consumer-side) and the freedom of modding. Don't give EA that idea (they're seriously thinking about it; look at SimCity 2013). 10. *Soon*. 11. *YUS*

It takes two to tango mate. And CA and SEGA seem to be great at the tango... CA are far from blameless in this, considering the downright lies from THEIR staff in regards to the capabilities of the "features" in Rome2.

you can change it in the manager program and change 01 to 02 and they will have two ships. but since the ships don't leave like in Attila (is is better made but lack optimized) you will have no room to disembark sadly. so one ship is enough
I feel like the place Rome two failed in the most was that it was way way to over hyped. The best example of this is this exact video, where the developers straight-up lied to us fans and gamers and we believed them. We believed that total war was an awsome series and that the developers could really outdo themselves. They made it look like the game would be a freaking masterpiece like it is in the video; better than the video even. And what do we get: absolute garbage for maybe the first few months on the games release. The game was nothing close to this "pre-alph" trailer and it was downright sh**! Now I know they have patched and fixed most of the bugs and things but the game we got will never be what it was made out to be. And that is why so many people hate the game. Hell, I threw the thing in a corner the day I got it and didn't touch it until maybe patch nine and its still trash compared to what it was made out to be. So for all those people hating on EA and the franchise, keep on doing it, those bastards deserve it.
Straight off, ten seconds in. What is that cutscene doing there? I hope it better not be future DLC because it's no where in the vanilla. The entire map design is historical battle only. Also they made the coast MUCH less wide. Decaying cities should have been a thing when you siege over multiple turns but they weren't 2:40 "cat and mouse around the coast and the defense of the beach vs the defense of the city" What a joke there, I was expecting something like Troy. All I got was a tiny slither of beach and any naval ships are already in their harbor and they just disembark straight away. Why did they change the hastati (I'm guessing that's hastati because of the lack o' armor)? Look at around 8:10-8:15. The all blood red color scheme looks so much nicer than that dull red and light blue clothing they wear. Can any modders get on that shit for an aesthetic skin change to the roman army to be more blood/brighter red than maroon?
Look how well they are animated around there bashing into the enemie soldiers, running and stuff. It looks nothing like the game we got. How can a veteran of this franchise ever trust CA again. I hate when companies pull this shit, yes its pre alpha, but the game should be better in the end not compromised like we have it today. This is probably te biggest dissapointment in gaming for me. Never have a sequel been so dissapointing. :(

I do know that there are many programers that have sacrificed sleep health etc to make this game. I feel bad for those because I genuienly think they tried to make the best game in the franchises. And its sad it turned out to be this way, if its a mix between lack of time, pushings from Sega or and bad leadership we might never know. I hope they can redeem themselves after this, with fixing it as much as possible and not stoppings upport for it. And avoid this for their next TW. In the game, not only the graphics are worse, but the scale of the city, the details, the speeches, the facial animations... all of that isn't like this video! I don't know what happened. It's like they scrapped all of their work and started again from scratch after doing this trailer. Or they maybe just lied to us.
TheFantasticrobin Yes this is cut out content thats been enchanced specificly for demoing and creating hype. This siege of Cartage is not in the game. But there is a siege of carthage in historical battles but its not as grandiose and big as this no... and the city is smaller and look different.

Well Total War isnt really rts its grand strategy with some tactical real time battles but I get what you mean. Ive been playing this franchise since the first Rome 2 almost like 10 years ago and every itteration of it. I also play very much strategy in all sub genrees, rts, 4x turnbased. And Im very dissapointed with the game to. Its not the quality i Expected either. The sadest part is they fill a nishe genree... you see most games go either way either they are grand strategy, 4x or maybe war games but they dont have these detailed tactical combat that total war games do. Or they are just rts or tactical real time strategygame and only has the battles, thats the common thing. Total war used to blend the best of both so well, and while I find many things good about the game thheres far to much broken, nonexistsing, bad stuff aswell. Maybe the game will be fixed who knows... if not Rome 1 might be a bit to old for you or the newer Shogun 2 might be interesting they are good. I hope they can patch the game into shape and the modders can turn it gold. Then we will see what the next total war will be... I will be very careful buying another one from now on.

Well, I can't say how well it's going to run on every comp. All I can say is that it worked very well on my comp, and I don't see why my rig is too special. Of course, it's not perfect, but expecting a game with the scope of Rome 2 to run perfectly is unreasonable. But in answer to your question, it's been running great for me since I bought it about half a year ago. Honestly, I think it deserves another chance from gamers.
I srsly still think about this footage all the time. I remember how excited I was after I saw this. THIS is what total war should be and we still haven't experienced what was shown in this footage. I love rome 2, especially with DEI. Its probs my fav total war. But Jesus Christ, if the game ever looked like this. I would of never stopped playing it.

Rome 2 is really bad. It was at launch and continues to be. It has a terrible HP system that ruin the pace and consistency of battles (something exacerbated with DEI actually). Awful morale, no terrain advantage, no tactics, a terrible army system and a lot more also make this game an abysmal showing compared to Shogun 2 and any game before it.
The worst part is that this game is the base for all subsequent games and so there hasn’t been a good total war since Shogun 2.

Also, during the historical battle, you don't land *all* of your forces on the beach anymore, only a few of them. You also don't get that cool cinematic intro anymore, which I thought was stupid to not include. If Teutoburg's is still there, then why not Carthage's?

I really want to enjoy it, since I love the setting, and I loved Rome 1, but I simply can't. Does Attila improve the combat at all? I'm hoping Warhammer will, but you never know.

He says that this is the capital city of one of his great enemies. When I attack the capital city of Rome and Carthage I want to see their greatest army trying to protect their city with strategic moves. The only thing I see is some mobs staying in the walls while I bombard them with my ballistas... BTW you can't place catapults when you are protecting your city in custom battles OMG!

Oh man I love all the pre-rendered "in engine" trailers for Total War Warhammer. I'm so glad to see that so much time and effort is being put into promotional materials instead of the actual game.
What CA could have done:
Find Europa Barbarorum and Roma Surrectum 2 modders. Ask them about their vision of a Roman Total War game. Ask them for all their resources, etc.
Have online polls way before development starts about what features people want in Total War games.
Have all the major Total War TH-camrs, reviewers, etc. tell you what they expect from a Total War game.
Find the guy who made the original Rome soundtrack and get him to remix them or redo a sound track.
Make the game with all your information and think about what all the features would do to the game.
Release a closed beta in September and have testing go on until February. Redo entire parts of the game if you truly think that they are bad.
Release the game in March, with all the now amazing features in it and all the testing. Have all the DLC and Ceasar in Gaul already in.
Have a feature in it where players can make multiplayer maps/historical battles and release those on Steam. Have it so that people can trade the maps and scenario's and also sell them if they want. Keep part of the selling price yourself.
In June, release more DLC with an entire new side campaign, followed by some new units/factions DLC packs.
And lastly, build a giant throne with all the money you got.

The game would still have some flaws, but then we would have been more forgiving since the release product would be better and the patch cycle would start from that point in time, not the early beta product :(
As a future game developer currently at university studying this sort of thing, I shall try to respond for them.
1. Why should they? Those resources are old as hell by now; Rome I's art assets, as good as the game looked back in the day, look like garbage now. Rome II's models and other art look far superior in contrast (and don't refer me to that famous image of those weird Hastati faces; that's an LOD draw distance bug that was fixed on the first month of release). CA also probably wanted to make their own game, with their own team who have known each other over the last few years working on previous Total War titles, stuff whoever made Europa Barbarorum/Roma Surrectum 2; they've probably got their own work outside of modding by now, with their own vision and probably little to no real experience on how to work within their new engine properly (the one CA made for Empire). However, it doesn't hurt for CA to take reference from how their mods actually played for research on how Rome II could play, but it shouldn't be exactly the same otherwise it'd just be the same experience all over again, bar with better visual and aural pleasure.
2. Nothing wrong with that, I agree. However, some things that fans ask for can prove to be near impossible (e.g. one fan asked and made a plan of, if there were to be a Rome II (before announcement), an extremely, far too complex way of making agents have their own real-time missions when you initiated a task for them on the campaign maps in order to make cinematics useful. In theory it'd work, it'd be amazing to see, but far too much work for what was worth).
3. Meh. Not needed.
4. They know who Jeff van Dyke is, they've even met him, unlike most of us. They also probably know how he works (whether or not that's a reason for why they didn't pick him, no one other than someone from CA will know). For some reason, they picked Richard Beddow. Don't know why, I liked his work for Empire and some of Rome II's (e.g. "Celtic Air", "Battle Theme - Rome", etc), some people don't like his work, totally subjective. Its CA's baby, they can pick who they want to do their soundtrack. Jeff van Dyke worked on Shogun 2's, so they are probably still in contact. Maybe they believed Richard Beddow's style of film, cinematic music would fit their goal to create a more cinematic feel to their new game.
5. But they must have done that obviously, that's how you make a game; you have to plan things, and how gameplay will be affected by things being cut/added. Whether or not you know it will create a better game, you probably won't know or realise until you start beta, but even then those beta testers may not give you all the insight that people outside from development may raise. They may even give bad advice (it's still a very useful phase though, obviously. You can't not have beta).
6. CA + SEGA are obviously looking for money; the gaming industry is a multi-million dollar business, and growing. There is a popular view in the gaming industry (and it's somewhat true for games that cost £30+) that releasing betas (closed or open) decreases sales. One reason is it can potentially decrease hype, therefore fewer sales. Also, sometimes you simply can't re-do entire parts of the game if they're integral, as it would mean taking even more time. There is always a deadline, not meeting that deadline once or more than once can cripple your organisation (especially in the VFX industry, where businesses work for roughly 1 million for 1 month, and have to spread that money across 50 or more digital artists, maintenance and still ask for them to work overtime).
7. The deadline was set and probably did they either did not succeed in renegotiating, or they felt they believed in themselves yet could do it on time, therefore did not ask. Or, maybe, they felt that what they had was good enough for an initial release and that they'd improve it over time (what they're doing now. Rome II was almost near impossible for me to keep playing, it is now fun (or, for people who still don't like it, at the very least bearable).
8. Nope. CA's business model for Caesar in Gaul + Hannibal at the Gates was actually sound. I'd be a proud dev to have thought of a simple way to make more money like that for what they are worth (Hannibal at the Gates is a great DLC campaign, had so much fun with that over the last 5 or 6 days. Caesar in Gaul, on the other hand, was a bit small. I also believe that these more compact campaigns should have some historical texts or cinematics to teach/engage the player more with that time period. The grand campaign is there for complete sandbox play with all factions, these smaller campaigns should focus a bit more on the exploits of that time, but still allow the player to have the autonomy to do what they want. For example, make more cinematics like the ones they did for Teutoburg Forest and the intro to this video (which was cut out for some reason, a real shame as it looked great)). Releasing these DLC campaign packages allows them to carry on working on Rome II (funding devs to carry on patching the game, as there is value in the game to be had. More support for a game encourages sales. However, the entire team obviously doesn't work on support; there's always a section planning for the future), and injects small sums of money to keep them partially afloat.
9. What, like the map creator + Steam Workshop? They're working on it. Not sure about historical battles, but definitely multiplayer battles. They did it for Shogun 2. They could definitely not be able to sell them though. Consumers making money on assets that they have made? I'm sorry but that is totally, *TOTALLY* out of the question and a silly idea. I don't think people would shell out for custom maps either, they'd infact complain about how mods/custom features are becoming monetised, setting a bad precedent for the future of the gaming industry (consumer-side) and the freedom of modding. Don't give EA that idea (they're seriously thinking about it; look at SimCity 2013).

I feel like the place Rome two failed in the most was that it was way way to over hyped. The best example of this is this exact video, where the developers straight-up lied to us fans and gamers and we believed them. We believed that total war was an awsome series and that the developers could really outdo themselves. They made it look like the game would be a freaking masterpiece like it is in the video; better than the video even. And what do we get: absolute garbage for maybe the first few months on the games release. The game was nothing close to this "pre-alph" trailer and it was downright sh**! Now I know they have patched and fixed most of the bugs and things but the game we got will never be what it was made out to be. And that is why so many people hate the game. Hell, I threw the thing in a corner the day I got it and didn't touch it until maybe patch nine and its still trash compared to what it was made out to be. So for all those people hating on EA and the franchise, keep on doing it, those bastards deserve it.

Look how well they are animated around there bashing into the enemie soldiers, running and stuff. It looks nothing like the game we got. How can a veteran of this franchise ever trust CA again. TheFantasticrobin Yes this is cut out content thats been enchanced specificly for demoing and creating hype. This siege of Cartage is not in the game. But there is a siege of carthage in historical battles but its not as grandiose and big as this no... and the city is smaller and look different.
Legion12Centurion yeah i already thought something like that, i also f**king bought it for 20% for that single mission, only if my friends started playing it would fill up that emty space but there not really rts fans so yeah, but i am really upset about the city thing becouse i liked that city and it actually was better than this one, the maps are far smaller that in rome 1, atleast tere you have a huge city to attack and enjoy.
Well Total War isnt really rts its grand strategy with some tactical real time battles but I get what you mean. Ive been playing this franchise since the first Rome 2 almost like 10 years ago and every itteration of it. I also play very much strategy in all sub genrees, rts, 4x turnbased. And Im very dissapointed with the game to. Its not the quality i Expected either. The sadest part is they fill a nishe genree... you see most games go either way either they are grand strategy, 4x or maybe war games but they dont have these detailed tactical combat that total war games do.
Or they are just rts or tactical real time strategygame and only has the battles, thats the common thing. Total war used to blend the best of both so well, and while I find many things good about the game thheres far to much broken, nonexistsing, bad stuff aswell.
Maybe the game will be fixed who knows... if not Rome 1 might be a bit to old for you or the newer Shogun 2 might be interesting they are good. I hope they can patch the game into shape and the modders can turn it gold. Then we will see what the next total war will be... I will be very careful buying another one from now on.

METH: NOT EVEN ONCE, or better said: CA: not even once. What happened? When I first played the game I couldn't believe how shitty it was. I kept waiting for patches, hoping for improvements, I even added tons of larger and smaller mods but to no avail. Pitty... such a pitty you guys screwd up the franchise.

This game was horrible, please do yourself a favor and don't get it. It's a over complicated version of rome total war with horrible battle gameplay.
