One thing I'll point out is if you are a technical person and want to automate a smaller greenhouse you can do it with free software like home assistant and some control boards. It might take a bit of tinkering around with but I have seen it done. Home assistant isnt really designed for this type of stuff but really you would just be using it for the logic side of things. Basically if temp > than a set point than turn on a smart switch that powers something like the fans. For irrigation it would work the same way that if certain parameters are met then turn on a smart switch that controls some pumps. You could control all that from your phone as well.

Good video! I’m super curious though what the initial investment is/ ROI for a greenhouse at that size with the addition of all the automated parts, and electricity for heating. We have farmers friend tunnels and a larger size for our mushrooms, but we have always found the more automated we go, the more things that tend to break and need repairs. I imagine it would take a minimum of 5-10 years to pay back the cost of the greenhouse with all the additional costs incurred on electricity and automation?

Hi Michael! For Orisha, the initial investment depends on your project size. Our prices are made to fit all kinds of greenhouses. Feel free to give us a call if you want to know more about the prices :)
For the payback, there are a lot of things to think about. The automation hardware is a neglectable part of your greenhouse's energy consumption and helps to save energy. For example, an Orisha system's AI knows not to heat the greenhouse if your roll-ups are open and knows how and when to heat efficiently. It would also help to save time and/or money on labor, as the automation system takes care of activating devices for you. No more back and forth between the field and the greenhouse to manage your roll-ups! Also, Orisha manages the greenhouse's humidity, which helps to prevent diseases, and helps to increase your yields.
Of course, there is no universal recipe for managing a greenhouse! Every grower has his own challenges. It is the first I hear a correlation between automation and things breaking, we would love to chat if you want to tell us more about your experience!

Since you lived both manual and digital operations, other than the optimization, flexibility and easiness digital brings to the table, what was the yield difference between before and after?

One of our customer automated her greenhouses. Next to it, she has another one manually operated. She told us she gets 30% more yields in the automated one.
Another data point : several customers grow 3x more than the American average. Good climate and irrigation have a big impact. With simple tools that follow the light availability, you can do that AND save on heat cost. Always available if you'd like to measure the impact you can get :)

How much do you get paid from Orisha for this video?! Seems like you just keep saying the same thing over and over again with no more information... What's the cost for each greenhouse? Do you need to invest in this for each greenhouse before you build them or can you retrofit them? These aren't just simple hoophouses...

      Hey TJ !
You are right. We shared the production costs with the Institute for this series. The Institute and Orisha share the same goal to build the ecosystem to support market gardeners.
Being small organizations, money and visibility are scarce resources that we're trying to use as efficiently as possible to
      reach that goal.
If you'd like more details on Orisha, the last video of the series will talk about how folks at FQT farm use their control system.
      About your questions :
      - Most of our growers have hoop houses.
      - Costs vary since we try to accommodate every small-scale grower. To give an idea it starts
at $1500. Payback is less than 6 months. We also offer solutions for tight cash flow.
      - You can retrofit with no problem. I recommend trying automatic rollups from day 1 though. It will save you tons of time and worries. You can do that for $30/month. Stop anytime if it's not worth it. You can add other equipment once you are convinced how much it helps.
We are trying out a new idea to help growers with everything we've learned so far about successful
greenhouse growth. Just reach out and we'll do our best to help :)
      Guillaume
