I agree. Also it allowed some people to play local co op, with one person on stick, and one on keyboard acting as an R2 unit. The keyboard/joystick functionality is preserved in XWVM.
Lastly , my one nagging fear is, well, best said in the words of Han Solo: “Aren't you afraid the Empire's going to find out about this little operation and shut you down?” I’m sure you know who I’m talking about 🐭 🏰
I doubt that would happen. The XWAUP team has been modding X-Wing for a very long time, and Ricky Rat hasn't done anything about it. To be blunt, The Corporation That Shall Not Be Named doesn't care that people are modding 25-year-old games. Granted, they're STILL some of the greatest games ever made! 😁😁
Wow this version of X-Wing looks awesome! The graphics look fantastic! I especially love how the Mission Objectives are seen and the old game music. Brings back great memories! ❤
In case someone didn't know: FRG Vehemence _can_ be destroyed in the original mission, but requires all your torpedos, and the "double whammy" tactic, otherwise the clock will yank you out.
@@Raistlen007 Oh, y'wanna know... So! This tactic only works if you have no warheads left at all, and your craft has laser/ion cannons as well. When targeting an enemy capital ship, you must keep the "switch weapons" and "fire" buttons pressed - this way, you'll shoot lasers AND ions without needing to wait for reloading. Basically it doubles your firepower at starship sieges, effectively halving the necessary time. Of course, it makes maneuvering and dodging laser fire a tad trickier, but hell, you know what they say...no pain, no gain!!!
AMAZING!! If I remember correctly this was the "Rescue the Sullustan leader" op. I remember those shuttles would all pivot and wreck you! I'm glad you have sped up the fire rate on the main cannons. The original X-wing had it ridiculously slow. Well done!
This mission is called "Interception and Capture." As this is a training mission for disabling shuttles, as in the original mission, the Shuttles do not fight back in this mission. You are correct that they did in "Rescue Sullustan Leader" which is not a training mission, but the tenth mission in the first tour. The fire rate is identical to the original game. It's been recreated meticulously. The fire rate may have been lowered in later games in the series, as they wanted to nerf the Y-wing to make the B-wing seem more capable in comparison.
Absolutely fantastic. My favourite game when I was a teenager. Sooo glad you guys are keeping this great game alive - or perhaps, inspiring it with new breath. Can the public donate to the project to help support /speed it?
Thank you so much, but we aren't accepting monetary donations to help support the project. What we do need are super talented 3d modelers+texture artists. If you know any, and they're willing to help work on this, let them know!
@@Raistlen007 Sounds excellent! If you accept a good advice from a long-time fan of this game: fix the bugs you can, but do _not_ remove the exploits! You know...those gameplay and mission phenomenons, which allow you to get all (or most) kills, and grab perfect score. Enemy arrival conditions, timings, enemy placements, arrival/departure coordinates, only 2-3 enemies will attack you at once, max 2 missiles can be fired on ya....stuff like this :)
This is AMAZING. Combining the best elements of the original X-Wing with the customisable system panels from XW Alliance and even the original iMUSE music system. I feel like I'm truly back in 1994 again. Will there be plans for the TIE Fighter style targeting system showing a real time view of the targeted object instead of the Info screen or movie style reticle? Can't wait for the formal release.
The 2nd redeeming quality of the Y-wing is putting the lasers and shields on maximum recharge only slows you down to 3/4 speed, not 1/2 speed like all the other ships. So with everything set to full recharge, it’s faster than an X-wing at the same settings, and the same speed as an A-wing.
I remember the one thing I hated about this mission back in the day...and ANY mission where you blow up Shuttles or Transports: There was ALWAYS a chance that an exploding shuttle/trans would IMMEDIATELY fly backwards into you for an instant death. One of the historical bonus missions from X-Wing CD was brutal because of this.
You're absolutely right, gunboats did that too. We discovered that on death of small craft the game sent it in a random vector. One of them could be your face. We changed that for xwvm so that doesn't happen anymore!
Little nitpicking: Sometimes its pretty dark or my eyes get old. Could you make it brighter or will there be a gamma setting to change? Question: The headtracking...is it automatic or something we have to activate ourself? Praise: I love the level of detail. Greate work.
We agree regarding the lighting and have been working all week on a new rendering pipeline. It really looks promising. The head tracking is using a TrackIR 5 and xwvm supports it natively through unity
@@MajorParts Its a game, finding a good balance between "realism" and playability should be concidered. Best thing would be if you could provide a gamma slider so everyone can have their favorite setting without changeing the monitor settings.
Yep, that's the most exciting thing about this project, it sounds like they're very keen on making the experience adjustable to personal preferences and needs, I'm so pumped to play the second there's a release.
That's a unity bug. It should be oriented to world instead of camera. It'l be fixed when unity fixes it or if we change to a different explosion system
I'm really concerned this will get pulled, might be best to "cancel it" for the time being and do this through discord, dont have any emails associated with this etc no one then can contact you
Exactly. Unfortunately, that’s probably the reason this mod will likely never be released now, as buying X-wing on Steam is a lot cheaper than buying Squadrons, and EA definitely won’t want competition of this quality. Still, X-wing remains a good game even with seriously outdated graphics. I prefer the 1994 CD version on DOSBox to the 1998 Steam version. The only way this mod might survive is if the modders make it so that it can’t work with the Steam version, and forces the player to have the original CD version to play it. Hardly any PCs have CD-ROM drives anymore, so the competition with Squadrons would be minimal.
