the thing i've noticed about kpop idol fashion is the stylists will do all kinds of fun things for stage outfits, music videos, and sometimes for korean award shows, but when they go overseas and have a chance to show out they tend to play it safe; they lose the fun experimental side of kpop out of fear of not being taken seriously or something, and it's sad and disappointing

That's mostly because these kpop idols aren't being personally invited to the met gala. They are being invited through the fashion brands they are ambassadors for, and they aren't given much freedom in the outfits they wear. The fashion house chooses the outfits for them and which is why the 'creative, fun' styles kpop is known for are missing. Kpop idols have been wearing bland, off-the-rack style outfits whenever they attend the Met Gala and that's not going to change unless one of them becomes a big enough name in the fashion industry and gets an invite directly from Anna Wintour or something.

Anne Hathaway can do no wrong recently. Like honestly so many of her looks have been memorable and amazing. This Versace dress is no exception and has the theme written all over it. Definitely a favorite.

I actually feel like a lot more people were technically on theme this year but the problem was that a lot of these same people also had some basic and blah looks. I wish more people pulled inspiration from other houses and brands besides Chanel hence why a lot of their looks felt boring.

I think it's a slap to The Met Gala and to the late designer Karl Lagerfeld. I know it's a fashion show. But this event had a theme to honor someone. The Met Gala is a prestigious event. What happened to being glamorous, classy, standing out with grace and beauty. Showing up in exquisite dresses and looking amazing. In the past many men have looked distinguished, charming, handsome and on point. You can do all that without showing up in a Halloween costume or damn cat outfit like Jared Leto. They should throw him out if you show up it a costume. It's not Halloween. He's a great looking guy with an amazing body who looks stylish and handsome in a suit. I like Lil Nas but showed up in something you might see in a music video, maybe at New Year's Eve at a party or Halloween. Lil Nas has a fantastic body and he enjoys showing it off. He's a sexy man with an amazing body who could have gone elegant, stylish and found a way to show his body. He could have worn a dress and I would have respected him more. He probably would have looked fabulous. I think shows like this should set some limits as to what you can and can't wear. I believe in creativity, imagination, being different and having flare. I believe in wanting to stand out. I just don't understand going way overboard and not complying with the theme of the event to honor the Karl. I know how much Karl loved & adored his cat. I don't think he would approve of Jared attire unless it was a costume party. I've heard from many other fashion designers who worked with Karl, his friends and those that knew him really well, have said, that Karl would have disapproved of Jared look for the Met that night. Karl adored his cat but the Met Gala isn't the place to wear a costume. It's wear you display your style and art. I don't understand Doja Cat outfit but I can see that she was trying to honor Karl in a respectful way. It's was a mix between a incredible stunning gorgeous dress & a little bit costume. She clearly tried to make an effort. Some of the people at the Gala made me wonder if there were any mirrors around. These people are all gorgeous!!! They have the best designers, stylists, make-up artists, hairdressers and anyone else they need. I don't understand how NOT A SINGLE ONE PERSON SAID, HOLD UP A MINUTE! YOU MIGHT WANT TO CHANGE. I think they should have done an "In Memoriam" theme. We lost quite a few fashion designers recently. I think it would have opened it up to celebrate people like Vivian Westwood and others. It would be more open to interpretation, instead of the straight forward theme they ended up doing. This year was a little "blah" for me.
This show and most shows are planned so far in advance that it would be impossible to include recently lost artists fairly. Karl's fashion dominance was such that who could really follow that act.

It’s like everyone involved forgot that this was a 60 year career with many things to pull from for inspiration and everyone chose the man’s personal style as influence, which wasn’t interesting to begin with, and the most interesting take on it was Rocky with the tartan which isn’t even a Karl design. No fur, no Chloé, no coloured tweed. It was a shame. Shout out to Thom browne though.

Karl would have been disappointed. Honoring Karl Lagerfeld is not just wearing Chanel or wearing something that looks like Chanel etc. There are so many things that could have been referenced to. F.e. he's from Hamburg/Germany. You could have create something like a classic fisherman shirt that is typical for that area with a square collar, a bit like a uniform, but as a dress made out of tweed.

Dua Lipa needed to step up hair to match that dress. Snatch it up, or femme it up, but do something. It was bridal on the runway, she looks like a Disney Princess in it.
It really looked like her head was disconnected from her body in terms of styling. I'm not knowledgeable on Karl's history so I hadn't seen the original look before, so I saw Dua and was like...bleh this is an archive? Then I saw how it was styled on the runway and the look made so much more sense. She just looked like she walked in, picked out this dress, changed nothing else about her appearance and wore it to the MET gala lol.
The amount of people calling that boring Jennie dress great just because they pulled an archive look is making me feel like Black Pink is a social experiment about how much corporate brainwash can regular people ignore before they call the industry bluff. They're pretty girls whose personalities are entirely crafted on LVMH houses that invested in their company right before their debut, that's it. THANK YOU. Jennie and Rose both looked bland PERIOD. I cant believe that the overhype is going until the Met Gala. Rose and Jennie had forgettable looks, Jennie at least looked decent but Rose showed up like she was going to a party and not to the freaking Met Gala, their fans ofc would NEVER EVER admit that they looked bad or too bland and would always hype them up. Also it's TRUE that blackpink literally have no personality other than their brand deals, the only thing they talk about in their songs and interviews is the respective houses they endorse. They are heavily manufactured with 0 personality, enough talent to impress this new generation that has vey low standards and too much media play. Their music alone would have NEVER got them where they are today if it wasnt for the Brand deals and becoming house ambassadors at around 3 years in the industry all at the same time. Also they really dont have that great of a fashion sense except maybe Jennie and even Jennie doesnt experiment with her style and only sticks to the LA Girl style. Before they became house Ambassadors Lisa and Rose probably had the worst fashion sense in the group and you can tell when they chose their own outfits during performances and the outfits get so much backlash by the fans even though the fans dont know that their girls picked their own outfits. We were made to think that they were super famous because their songs were good, we were made to think that their exceptional fashion style is what landed them a contract with the famous fashion houses, we were made to think that they were good perfromers, we were made to think that they have a good personality and are funny and all. It's all manipulation from the media and the fans should really stop coming for anyone that doesnt kiss Blackpink's ass because its getting tiring.
Fun fact, Anne Hathaway was also wearing a vintage hairpiece with a camellia patterned braid. I think she said it was from a Carl Lagerfeld show, but it could’ve just been from the Versace archive, I don’t entirely remember. Either way, her stylist really understood the assignment.
This year really seems to emphasize how little fashion history matters to the attendees/stylists. "Oh its karl? Lets do a lazy interpretation of chanel but mostly the stuff that came from coco herself". Almost none of it actually emphasized what he brought to the brand, and it's like everybody forgot he worked anywhere else.
Just proves that people pretend to know fashion I truly believe nothing matters in this generation (in any industry ,especially in fashion and music) everyone and everything is damn near half ass
I actually think it's mostly on the designers here. I don't think we can expect attendees to have fashion history knowledge unless, of course, they're fashion icons. Stylists definitely deserve some of the blame here as well because they should at least know a little fashion history to successfully do their job, but for me, if anyone should know fashion, it should be designers! A random celebrity probably is not gonna do their due diligence and research specific Karl-era house codes for the met gala because, quite frankly, that's not their job. It is, however, the job of a designer/creative director to familiarize oneself with fashion house codes and history, especially if you work at a house where Karl also worked! To me, this seemed like a lazy outing for almost all of these top fashion houses, as it seemed nobody wanted to research what Karl brought to Fendi, Chloé, Patou, or even Chanel, honestly. It was all very surface level, and I think that largely the designers' laziness is what's to blame here!

Totally agree with your take on Dua’s look. The jacket and hat would’ve added to drama on the carpet and made a bigger overall Karl statement - esp since she was hosting the event. I don’t think Dua’s chosen hair style worked with that look - it went very sleeping beauty (which isn’t the vibe of Karl’s design, but as we know with Karl, if not staying true to the heritage of the house he was designing for with a given look, he advocated the new/now/next more than anything - and her hair style wasn’t particularly modern, either). Again, beautiful dress, and she was stunning, but the hair was really a miss for me. No one blew me away with an archival Chanel luck last night, sadly. Morgan Stewart posted on her IG stories last night that someone should have rocked all Chanel denim from the 80s w/ the oversized CC jewelry & accessories and I totally agree - we didn’t get any of that type of energy last night. More people tried to follow the theme than usual, which is appreciated - but it could have been unbelievable with a little more research.

His pronunciation has improved. It was a running joke that Luke couldn’t pronounce ANYTHING in the beginning of his channel and it was funny but not in a mean way. He’s come a long way.

@@grnddesign actually the way he pronounces haute is incorrect (but that’s actually on purpose and he addressed it in the beginning, it’s really pronounced more like “hote, rhymes with coat” but he says it like “hot” because that’s how is often mispronounced) It’s very obvious that over the years his knowledge has grown tenfold and he’s really grown into himself as a TH-camr, but if you go back and watch his first few videos they’re much different tho still enjoyable and full of information.
The channel name is purposefully incorrect. Mode is féminin in French: la mode. The mispronunciation of haute as hot is tongue in cheek, Luke has mentioned that in an old video.
I agree that Jennie's dress was too simple. Idk if it was her pick or it was picked for her and she just accepted, but definitely played too safe. I hope she can attend other ones in the future and do a better job. But I like the overall look. She looks very beautiful.

To me Lil Nas’ outfit sorta read as them seeing how popular doja’s red jewel look was and trying to recreate that. I’m not a huge doja fan but I’ll admit she has an eye for fashion and she knows how to stand out while still tying in clever themes.

I didn’t love Kylie‘s look at first, but after I read about the red and blue reference to the Chanel made a lot more sense. Something also worth noting is that Karl used to make capes for André Leon Talley who died this year, so the cape over her dress was supposed to pay homage towards him as well.

They are being invited through the fashion brands they are ambassadors for, and they aren't given much freedom in the outfits they wear. The fashion house chooses the outfits for them and which is why the 'creative, fun' styles kpop is known for are missing. Kpop idols have been wearing bland, off-the-rack style outfits whenever they attend the Met Gala and that's not going to change unless one of them becomes a big enough name in the fashion industry and gets an invite directly from Anna Wintour or something.

I think it's a slap to The Met Gala and to the late designer Karl Lagerfeld. I know it's a fashion show. But this event had a theme to honor someone. The Met Gala is a prestigious event. What happened to being glamorous, classy, standing out with grace and beauty. Showing up in exquisite dresses and looking amazing. In the past many men have looked distinguished, charming, handsome and on point. You can do all that without showing up in a Halloween costume or damn cat outfit like Jared Leto. They should throw him out if you show up it a costume. It's not Halloween. He's a great looking guy with an amazing body who looks stylish and handsome in a suit. I like Lil Nas but showed up in something you might see in a music video, maybe at New Year's Eve at a party or Halloween. Lil Nas has a fantastic body and he enjoys showing it off. He's a sexy man with an amazing body who could have gone elegant, stylish and found a way to show his body. He could have worn a dress and I would have respected him more. He probably would have looked fabulous. I think shows like this should set some limits as to what you can and can't wear. I believe in creativity, imagination, being different and having flare. I believe in wanting to stand out. I just don't understand going way overboard and not complying with the theme of the event to honor the Karl. I know how much Karl loved & adored his cat. I don't think he would approve of Jared attire unless it was a costume party. I've heard from many other fashion designers who worked with Karl, his friends and those that knew him really well, have said, that Karl would have disapproved of Jared look for the Met that night. Karl adored his cat but the Met Gala isn't the place to wear a costume. It's wear you display your style and art.
I don't understand Doja Cat outfit but I can see that she was trying to honor Karl in a respectful way. It's was a mix between a incredible stunning gorgeous dress & a little bit costume. She clearly tried to make an effort. Some of the people at the Gala made me wonder if there were any mirrors around. These people are all gorgeous!!! I think they should have done an "In Memoriam" theme. We lost quite a few fashion designers recently. I think it would have opened it up to celebrate people like Vivian Westwood and others. It would be more open to interpretation, instead of the straight forward theme they ended up doing. This year was a little "blah" for me.
This show and most shows are planned so far in advance that it would be impossible to include recently lost artists fairly. Karl's fashion dominance was such that who could really follow that act.

This year really seems to emphasize how little fashion history matters to the attendees/stylists. "Oh its karl? Lets do a lazy interpretation of chanel but mostly the stuff that came from coco herself". Almost none of it actually emphasized what he brought to the brand, and it's like everybody forgot he worked anywhere else.

I actually think it's mostly on the designers here. I don't think we can expect attendees to have fashion history knowledge unless, of course, they're fashion icons. Stylists definitely deserve some of the blame here as well because they should at least know a little fashion history to successfully do their job, but for me, if anyone should know fashion, it should be designers! A random celebrity probably is not gonna do their due diligence and research specific Karl-era house codes for the met gala because, quite frankly, that's not their job. It is, however, the job of a designer/creative director to familiarize oneself with fashion house codes and history, especially if you work at a house where Karl also worked! To me, this seemed like a lazy outing for almost all of these top fashion houses, as it seemed nobody wanted to research what Karl brought to Fendi, Chloé, Patou, or even Chanel, honestly. It was all very surface level, and I think that largely the designers' laziness is what's to blame here!
At least Lila and Kate Moss gave some Fendi references!

Totally agree with your take on Dua’s look. The jacket and hat would’ve added to drama on the carpet and made a bigger overall Karl statement - esp since she was hosting the event. I don’t think Dua’s chosen hair style worked with that look - it went very sleeping beauty (which isn’t the vibe of Karl’s design, but as we know with Karl, if not staying true to the heritage of the house he was designing for with a given look, he advocated the new/now/next more than anything - and her hair style wasn’t particularly modern, either). Again, beautiful dress, and she was stunning, but the hair was really a miss for me. No one blew me away with an archival Chanel luck last night, sadly. Morgan Stewart posted on her IG stories last night that someone should have rocked all Chanel denim from the 80s w/ the oversized CC jewelry & accessories and I totally agree - we didn’t get any of that type of energy last night. More people tried to follow the theme than usual, which is appreciated - but it could have been unbelievable with a little more research.

I can't get over the school hallway vinyl carpet- it makes the balck and white designs look cartoonish and cheap or make the carpet look dirty. Let's not bring the 'champagne carpet' back ever again.

To me Lil Nas’ outfit sorta read as them seeing how popular doja’s red jewel look was and trying to recreate that. I’m not a huge doja fan but I’ll admit she has an eye for fashion and she knows how to stand out while still tying in clever themes.

I didn’t love Kylie‘s look at first, but after I read about the red and blue reference to the Chanel made a lot more sense. Something also worth noting is that Karl used to make capes for André Leon Talley who died this year, so the cape over her dress was supposed to pay homage towards him as well.

I think the theme should've been a in memoriam type so that all of the late designers that passed recently could've been included and people could have done a creative take on mourning wear.

The thing with Karl busy designs is that somehow, it made sense, it was coherent despite all the extras (not a personal favorite but still). Billie's dress simply looks messy. Still pretty but far more confusing.
