Windows 7-How to record audio directly from computer

This is a tutorial on how to record audio directly from your computer.
It should work on most modern Windows OS's, but this one was done specifically in Windows 7.
Also, I don't have a mic, so you'll have to read :)
MAKE SURE YOU UPDATE TO THE LATEST REALTEK DRIVER.
Download an update at: www.realtek.com...
You will need:
-Realtek HD audio codec driver
-Sound recorder (already installed in Windows 7). I suggest you use a more sophisticated program such as Adobe Audition, Sony Sound Forge, or the free Audacity.
HAVING PROBLEMS? HERE ARE FIXES/REASONS WHY!
1. Update to the latest version of the driver.
2. You might have a latest, but not the same, Realtek audio driver.
3. Your hardware may not be compatible.
This should also work with most non-Realtek driver devices, but there may be slight differences in the procedure.

I guess the easiest way, if you don't want the hazzle of downloading a new program and learning how to use it + altering your default settings, is to connect a mini jack from your headset plug and back into your microphone plug (loop). This works because then the PC thinks it's receiving sound from an outside source when in fact you are playing the sound from the PC itself. I did the yesterday and it works like a charm.

This really helps. I haven't tried it yet but have been looking for a way to do this (like on the older systems) and have had ZERO success. I believe this will allow me to do what I would like to now. Thanks for posting.

This works like a champ! But you need to update because the Dell I used does not have Realtek...it uses IDT but works just the same. Instead of Stereo Mix, it's call Rec. Playback (IDT High Definition Audio...). Just select and make default, disable all other devices (so it doesn't pick up outside noise) and record the sound as shown in the vid.

Not realizing this was even an option at first, I was using a mic next to speaker. Needless to say I wasn't happy with the result. Along with the comment below is setting this as the system default for recording, I was able to do exactly what I needed with the help of your tutorial. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

guys right click below microphone or whatever you have and click show disabled devises and stereo mix will come up Thumbs up so people can see

Thank you for a concise tutorial.
I did have to download and install Realtek audio drivers in order to see the "Stereo Mix" as the Win 7 stand alone audio drivers don't allow that option. The Realtek drivers was a 125mb download.

My stereo mix wont come up, I have Windows 8 and cant seem to get it. I have disabled all my other audio devices such as mics and clicked show disconnected and hidden devices. What do I do?

GREAT !!!! You revealed what Windows 7 made impossible to discover !!!! The " " Help " " manual just said that an external microphone is needed - as in that would be the only possible source !

man please help, i have win 7 64bit that works on a laptop.
now i was searching a few months ago why when i hit to show hidden devices,
nothing appears.
there's only a microphone.
my laptop is not old but maybe the windows i use doesn't install the stereo mix thing,
i don't know.
if i install Realtek HD audio codec driver, will it mess up my sound?
i use audio and video drivers from nvidia.
can you help me fix this?
