- Arguably one of The Top 10 Theo Moments.
SPOILERS for Episode 9 of Crown of Candy.

Between this and using Swirlwarden to leap out of the ocean and deflect a blow and save his own life, Murphy was an absolute machine this season
Don’t forget the moment in the final battle where he extends his shield to protect the Knights of North Gumbia from Bulbian Paladins
two seasons of Murph rolling terribly has made D20 fans not realize he's an experienced DM who likes system crunch.
Theo has always been cool!
@@romxxii Emily nails it when she says, "you always have great ideas, the dice just hate you."
@@romxxii Murph is just such an incredibly smart and knowledgeable player but the dice just never wants to cooperate with his ideas.
In a low fantasy setting, choosing this ability was a brilliant move
Seriously! Between this and Liam's clutch moment at the tournament with Detect Poison and Disease, the D20 team is just the best.
@@Belthazor24 Every game Brennan is remotely involved with ends up being a phenomenal showcase for at least one really commonly overlooked spell or ability.
My favorite example at the moment is probably the Adventuring Party a few weeks ago, where he pointed out that in real life Unseen Servant would be *life-changingly* useful. I have not stopped thinking about that since.
@@emthatyourefuse2494 I saw that one! The other one that would for sure be used like crazy (I think) is Mage Hand.
@@Belthazor24 I've thought in the past like what kind of superpower I'd want to have in real life, and most people would probably say something like super strength or speed, or flight or something generic like that, but I keep coming back to Mr. Fantastic stretching powers, for the same reason Mage Hand would be phenomenal in real life. Could you imagine being all warm and cozy in your bed, but you forgot something on your desk or something and have to get up. Not with stretch/Mage Hand powers you don't!
@@emthatyourefuse2494 didn't Emily use that one in the unsleeping city to essentially give her self scrying? At least I think I remember a scene like that, shortly after she burned her house?
Knock is one of those spells like Grease, that makes the rest of the party go “oh brother, you’re wasting a slot on THAT garbage?!” And then it saves all their asses.
See also: Liam casting Detect Poison to find the watersteel daggers. Absolutely wrecked Brennan’s shit.
They're all spells that are super situational, that most probably wouldn't prepare too often, but when those situations do happen... they are just *clutch*. In a low-magic setting, with this much backstabbing and plots of murder... very useful
Clutch spells are useful to keep around
Especially impressive because Eldritch Knights don't get a lot of spells. So this was chosen very intentionally
Liam using detect poison and Theo using knock. Every DND spell has a use.
Except true strike.
Or detect traps.
Liam also used Rope Trick too
@@jimmy_the_squid9456tbf rope trick IS extremely useful. I use it regularly with my gloomstalker to basically hide, poke my head out and fire my hand crossbows then go back inside. Essentially turning me into a machine gun turret with which no one can kill.
@@stevena.5381I had a gloomstalker ranger use rope trick to save his life from falling into a pit
Brian: "I cast a spell that automatically unlocks the door."
Brennan: "Naw man! This is too perfect to *just* unlock the door! We're going to make this awesome!"
This is one reason Brennan is a great DM
Gotta love Brennan! He loves torturing and destroying his players. But he loves rewarding them when they do something clever even more
I love how we can see the razor blade focus on Murph at these times lol
That's a good point, every other season he's the straight man, the one making sure everyone's following the thread, but this season Theobald has no authority to be in that position so Murphs gotta be ready for anything
I was looking for this scene! Such a badass moment to break out his magic.
Knock as a spell always gets flag because people want to use it stealthily but this is how to make it badass. It opens the door and lets you burst out in no time with your hands free.
anyone claiming that Knock is stealthy has not read the spell. it is extremely not stealthy, it lets out a loud knocking sound like a peal of thunder.
@@acolytetojippity I think that's what they are saying. People hate knock because it isn't stealthy but that this should be how you think about it.
@@acolytetojippity it is less that people claim it, it's misunderstood what it is for. People want to use it to break in and therefore are mad that it is so loud. What they miss is that it isn't for the Arcane Trickster rogue who wants to use magic to sneak in. It's for the Wizard who can't kick in a door or a spellcasting fighter who has his hands full
@@MeonLightsor for anyone that wants to have a “knock knock mother fuckers” moment
Just gotta cast Silence prior to make it do the stealth thing. Great combo
I absolutely love to see Brennan's face whenever he gets his shit handed to him. This one, but also the Detect Poison on Liam, Amethar getting out of paralysis during the Long Fall, and (for me the biggest moment) Theo's Swirlwarden Death Evasion. Ofc he's an actor and potentially increases his responses, but it's SO rewarding to see them shine on these cool moments. When I hear "rule of cool", I always think back on these moments. That's the crux on collaborative storytelling of RPGs.
The problem with the rule of cool is that its invoked so often its the rule of mindly interesting.
I freaking love how excited Brennan is for this move. He was so caught off guard but clearly could not have been happier about it
I think this was super important, the party had just gotten hit by a fuckin' barrage of emotionally draining and devastating moments this episode, tons of awful things happening to the party leaving them lost and confused, House Rocks, especially the Rocks family were all hurting and scared.
I think this moment summarizes Theo's role so well, when everything was going to shit the ever dutiful knight was steadfast.
And from a meta perspective you can see how there's a hope spot for the Intrepid Heroes, they needed Murph to step up and start to turn the tide as much as House Rocks needed Theo to do so.
Such a good god damn moment.
All I want in life is someone who hypes as much as Emily and Murph do for each other. I loved this whole season!
Yess!! One of my favorite things throughout all of this groups’ D20 campaigns is watching the looks and communication between them two - it’s so sweet and fun to see the extra level of attention, celebration, admiration, etc that spouses share for each other compared to very good friends interacting. Helps me super-appreciate the little things that bring their characters to life when I notice one of them making an OMG UR BRILLIANT face as the other speaks, schemes, etc. Such fun.
@@blood-soup It’s the Thunderstep encounter that really gets me. Emily as a primary spellcaster is a MENACE, and every time she does something else you can see the excitement building in Murph’s eyes, and then he hypes her a little more at the end. They make me so happy to watch and listen!
He is the one who knocks!
🤣🤣🤣
In my headcannon there was a henchman directly in feont of the door who got splattered by the door bursting off into a wall by theos knock
This is my favorite part of this episode because the latter half of it was just one hurtful slap after the other. This one moment was a signal that it was turning around.
The way that the music cuts as he starts to describe Toby's body is so good
This scene was rad but I really wish it included the follow up where Theo basically carves right through the muffin soldiers without them even getting a turn to fight back
The way he says the line just gives chillsssssss
my fav thing about this season was that i knew from the moment we met cruller he was gonna be a two faced double crossing son of a bitch bc i went “hold up, the kings best friend is a bread person? ooooh this will not end well.”
When playing these High poltical games of D&D I love all the uses some of the more unorthodox spells get
The hottest Murph has ever been
Knock is such a clutch spell
The best part imo about Theo, an ELDRITCH KNIGHT, knowing Knock of all spells is because BOTH of his wards are rogues.
No doubt they have locked him in a room before as a little joke, and so Theo has taken precaution to make sure nothing would keep him from protecting the royal family
Absolute Beast 💪
