    Over the last 2 years, I have saved over a lakh of rupees in taxes by deploying tax loss harvesting. Tax loss harvesting is a simple concept that requires investors to sell some of their investments at a loss to offset gains that they might have realized elsewhere. Pleasantly, tax loss harvesting is not just about saving taxes but it can also improve the quality of one's portfolio and improve tax-adjusted and risk-adjusted returns. In this video, I shall be taking you through this concept and I sincerely hope all investors will take advantage of this important tax provision

    One suggestion would be to keep the discussion topics less technical and in easy to understand which will be helpful to reach out to a broader audience.
    One more suggestion if you are going for the Hindi version then keep the topics simpler and shorter than these posts and stick to mutual funds discussion in the beginning. This may sound unpleasant to some but imo it's a fact.

      @shankarnath  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your advice & suggestions. I can relate to this as a viewer .. but I have another person I need to take care of -- me
      Let's start with the user problem i.e. notifications. Thankfully, TH-cam offers the simplest of solutions i.e. tap on the notification bell again to switch off notifications. I am myself subscribed to over 50 channels but have activated notifications in only 3 of them.
      Now let's understand what Shorts gives the creator (me):
      1. Access to a bigger audience
      2. Faster growth in channel leading to higher motivation
      3. Ability to present my existing users with information as and when it happens rather than waiting a week to create & edit a long format video
      4. Monetization opportunities which allows me to earn some revenue which can be fed back to recruit researchers & offer even better content
      It's a privilege and responsibility I have i.e. examine the pros and cons in both light i.e. the person making the content & the person viewing the content .. and take the optimum decision that serves most if not every stakeholder

      Tax harvesting is for LTCG, where you book 1L profit each year and reinvest as the 1L limit is exempt.

      1. If you cannot use your capital loss to reduce your capital gains in one year, you can carry forward the losses for up to 8 assessment years. I mentioned that in the video at 06:24
      2. As explained in the video, tax loss harvesting is the simple sale of securities and doesn't change the method of calculating one's portfolio returns. You can track your portfolio returns the same way you'll do when you sell shares or MF units irrespective of whichever purpose the sale was done for

    @ezhilmaniinbanathan5677 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Shankar, Always a big fan of your work. But I think tax loss harvesting is not worth of doing for tax save purpose but only to get rid of bad stocks. Let me tell you an example for the 3rd scenario you told, imagine in the first year I bought a share for 100, at the end of the year it went to 70, i sold it and purchased it again at same price 70, next year it reaches 130, now my gain is 60 for which I have to pay tax, if I saved tax for 30 in the first year, anyway in the second year I am going to pay higher tax for a gain of 60. There is a tamil youtube channel called 'investment insights' with English subtitles where he explained it in detail. Instead tax gain harvest is a better strategy (every year 1 lakh gain is exempted from tax)

    • @cripz4203
      @cripz4203 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @shankarnath
      @shankarnath  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Ezhilmani
      1. I see you have substituted a portfolio strategy with a single stock strategy. 2. You've assumed the sale of the stock in 1 year
      If your portfolio is a single stock and the general objective is to sell after a year - then you are better off not trying out tax-loss harvesting.
      Tax-loss harvesting works for me perfectly because I have a bunch of stocks and don't have an explicit aim of selling in an year. I hold some stocks for long & sell some stocks sooner. Tax loss harvesting works best when it is applied over a portfolio as some stocks do well and some don't.

    • @kunalkashelani585
      @kunalkashelani585 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you end up selling your stocks on short term, there won't be any benefits, but if you end up holding it for long term, the stock might help you reach that Target of 1L profit booking.

    • @shankarnath

      Dear Akshay ji - Ads is how many creators like me earn some income. While it is not sufficient to cover the expenses but atleast something is better than nothing. If advertising income is removed, then lakhs of content creators (incl. me) and maybe even TH-cam will have to close down.
      I guess it's a tough choice for both i.e. me as a content creator and you as a content viewer. Alternatives:
      a) For me: Put videos behind a paywall which means only paying customers can watch it which reduces my growth
      b) For viewers: Subscribe to TH-cam Premium which means forking out some money for an ads-free experience which a majority viewers don't want to
      So for now, I am relying on advertisers to finance the cost of creating so that I can recoup some of my expenses while viewers can watch my content for free. If you have some alternative ideas on how this can be a win-win for me & viewers, please do share. Thanks!
