    My elder brother suggested me to listen to "Shankar Nath", and I ignored it earlier; After 3 months, I was revisiting our chat, and came across his advice and felt atleast I should listen.
    And now I can say, the story telling, insights provided (authenticity) in his videos are awesome. I listen to most of them, but as we all do I follow my own intuition and logic while investing.
    Also, the channel is mostly in English with some rare video in Hindi where one can get great insights. (So, overall it seems okay). Thank you for the free knowledge ☺️

    There was a coffee can portfolio in small case. But the manager has closed it for fresh investors.
    There were 10 stocks in it and I had invested in them in Nov 2016.
    Here are the stocks (all with equal weightage of 10%):
    1. Relaxo Footwears
    2. PC Jeweller
    3. HDFC Bank
    4. Axis Bank
    5. Dr. Lal Pathlabs
    6. Syngene International
    7. Lupin
    8. Amara Raja Batteries
    9. Eclerx Services
    10. Asian Paints

    • @shankarnath
      @shankarnath  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thx for sharing. I'm not surprised it was closed. I mean, if the entire purpose of a coffee can list of stocks is to tell investors to buy these 10 stocks and sit tight for the next 10 years .. then it's unlikely a client would pay fund management fees over this entire period. The original advice has value but not the holding period.

  • @sujithr6142
    @sujithr6142 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks Shankar for another wonderful video. One thing which I did not understand is - in the first part it is mentioned that coffee can should include potential multi baggers. But if we apply all these filters mentioned in the second part you will find that all these high quality companies will be already at a very high valuation and may not become a multi bagger.

    • @shankarnath
      @shankarnath  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello Sujith. Thank you for the appreciation
      1. Think I said: a coffee can portfolio should have stocks that have a high probability of becoming multi-baggers. And per Mr. Kirby and as we studied in the video, these are stocks where the ROCE is over 15% and sales growth is 10%
      2. I can understand where you are coming from. This valuation conundrum will always be there. But let's go back 10 years when Asian Paints was ~35,000 crores in market capitalization. It was already India's largest and Asia's third largest paint company. It had a 45% market share then and at a PE of 36, not only was it India's most expensive paints company, it was also the world's most expensive one. This might look easier to look at now, now that we know how the story has unfolded but this shows why current valuation becomes a slightly weaker variable when there is good sales, earnings and cashflow to back it up.
      Infact, let me present a small example. A company is at a PE of 100. So expensive, yes it is. But now I say, this company is growing its sales/EPS at 50%. So per quick math - the PE for you (based on your acquisition of 100) comes down to 66 in year 2. By year 5, the PE is looking a lot healthy & a massive steal at 13.2 (i.e. 100 divided by 1.5^5). As an investor, this is the goal .. and the sales growth number lends support to valuation.
      I'm not saying valuation is not important but when valuing companies - everything is i.e. valuation, sales growth, EPS growth, free cash flow, ROCE, industry, competitors etc.
      Hope this helps.

    I think that screenshot was of my screener (and many other folks may think the same too)😄 btw sales median 10y on screener helps with the sales growth issue. • @shankarnath
      @shankarnath  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you very much, Roshan.
      Curious to know - how does Sales Median 10Y solve the problem?
      For example - let's look at P&G Hygiene and Health Care Limited. It has a 10Y Sales Median of 9.2% (so very close to 10%) as per screener.in
      Here's the annual sales growth for this company:
      FY13: 29%
      FY14: 22%
      FY15: 14%
      FY16: -3%
      FY17: 2%
      FY18: 6%
      FY19: 20%
      FY20: 2%
      FY21: 19%
      FY22: 4%
      Now, we are seeking companies that have grown at 10% sales growth every year .. and per actual sales growth information, the company was below the 10% mark in 5 out of 10 years -- disqualifying it from consideration in the coffee can screeners.
      Anything I am missing out on? (btw, I didn't realise there was a sales median criteria on screener :) .. thx for letting me on this)

      @roshannair2963 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shankarnath I know it may cause a bit of exclusions that are borderline, I find it a bit helpful to put something like 9.8 or something for the median 😅 for a coffee can portfolio, it seems keeping it simple / painless helps (might cause a few exclusions but then again, we may need to spend more time to get it right to the tee)

    • @shankarnath
      @shankarnath  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@roshannair2963 Thanks for letting me know. Your comment got me curious and for the last 20 mins, I've been looking at the sales growth of individual companies and matching them with the 10Y sales median. I went as high as 40% in terms of 10Y sales median growth and after manually looking at 20 companies .. I almost found a company which has 10 years of 10%+ sales growth. (Lancer Containers Lines Ltd is 10%+ in 9 out of 10 years). Anyways, as I said there are platform limitations .. and everyone will have their ways of circumventing that.

      Thank you for your kind appreciation, Vinay.
      Oh yes, like everything there are some cons with CCP. I highlighted a couple at the end. Honestly, I really didn't think of benefits and drawbacks when constructing this video & I think viewers will see that difference in these set of videos. I am trying out a format where my videos will give enough but not everything on a topic. I'll give resources, worksheets etc. which an interested viewer can lap up. It's a bit like leading a horse to the river .. but the horse needs to like the water aswell :)
      Rambling now, so I'll stop .. but hope you see what I'm hinting on. Thx for the suggestion though, definitely something CCP prospects should factor.

    Very informative (as always). Good to see you back Sir. One query, why don't we have any filter on Net profit growth or profit margins? There would be some business whose revenue has grown but profit may not have grown (with ROCE still above 15%) Also, is it okay to have businesses which has a net profit margin of just say 5% or below (asking as we don't apply any filter on margin but just ROCE).

    • @shankarnath
      @shankarnath  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you very much, Ankur. Well, this coffee can methodology in its classical form was made a few decades back. Maybe sales growth can be taken as a proft growth proxy then. My guess is that ROCE plays the role of profit.
      Now, your question is valid - what if there is revenue growth but not profit growth? Ofcourse anything is possible but generally sales growth is difficult to happen without engaging more capital in the form of equity and debt to build more factories, property, machines, inventory etc. Which means, if ROCE has to be maintained over 15%, then even the EBITDA has to grow. I think its in this context, Mr. Kirby went with sales growth & ROCE as two unique but highly relevant metrics
      However, as I explained in the video, no one uses Coffee Can in its classical form. Everyone adds their own experience and preferences, so do go ahead and apply a profit filter to your screeners.

    • @ankurgoel8769
      @ankurgoel8769 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shankarnath Thanks a lot for the detailed response, really appreciate it. Agree with the color ROCE plays the part of profit here as only then business can grow.
