      Garlic might be good for people, but dogs metabolize certain foods differently than we do. According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, garlic and other members of the allium family, including onions, contain thiosulfate, which is toxic to dogs but not to humans.

      It's good for dogs in small amounts. A 60 lbs dog can eat up to 4oz before its considered dangerous. Onions are more dangerous for dogs on the other hand and I wouldn't feed my dog any food with onions

    • @Notius
      @Notius ปีที่แล้ว +295

      This method of preparation is probably the safest for dogs, as cooking it whole denatures the compounds that make the garlic spicier when crushed or cut (they normally create allicin). So while they're still not recommended for dogs due to the components still being there, they won't combine and make something worse.
      Dogs can generally half an average raw clove of garlic per kilogram of bodyweight without worry. That was a husky, which average 18kg, so it probably could've eaten that whole container of garlic and been fine.

    One can peel a lot garlic quickly by placing the broken up cloves in a large bowl then placing another flipped bowl, or cover, on top and shaking vigorously for a short while. The key is that there is enough space inside for the cloves to hit the sides with force. This can be quite loud with steel bowls, so mitigate with ear plugs or wrap the bowls in a towel.

And I went #2 four times. And apparently it can prevent blood clots? But I did not bleed that day, so I don’t know from personal experience.
      apparently the daily max is supposed to be 2-3 cloves.

      Garlic might be good for people, but dogs metabolize certain foods differently than we do. According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, garlic and other members of the allium family, including onions, contain thiosulfate, which is toxic to dogs but not to humans.

    • @erNomic
      @erNomic ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Mr.BobsDog I wonder the level of toxicity when this man has 2 generations of experience feeding his dogs not just garlic, but "tons of garlic". I make my own dog's food as well, and I had also heard the same studies and kept garlic out. He said his dogs have lived long healthy lives and again, he said it helped keep ticks off them. Also, 90% of the food for dogs I see on store shelves I would not let my dogs go anywhere near, despite their corporate approval. I don't know the details of the study, but as usual this is a subject that needs a closer look for myself personally. I still leave garlic out just to be safe, but the reason I spend a whole day every 3 months and spend much more than I would if I just bought canned or bagged food is because of the absolutely horrible quality and ingredient control put into dog food.

      You can store it for a few weeks in the fridge. Just make sure the garlic is submerged in the oil and tightly sealed.
      You can confit garlic in butter but it needs to be clarified first. Otherwise the butter will burn and separate during the cooking process. Clarified butter has a much higher smoke point so it shouldn’t be a problem.
