      I have an i7 8700 as CPU paired with an RTX 3090. I don't know if the stock version of my CPU bottlenecks my gpu. I play at 1440p. Right now I'm tempted to get an i9 9900k just to be sure to run my GPU at his best but in the other hand it wouldn't be a great move since there are new CPUS with DDR5 technology coming out soon, and for that type of upgrade I'll need to upgrade my motherboard too, also the PCI-E 4.0 is being better implemented and that is another reason to wait to upgrade...

    @nathanc6516 3 ปีที่แล้ว +44

    Thanks for this video, it's a great reference point for what CPU's will start to cause the 3080 to bottleneck. Looks like the 8700k has a slight bottleneck on some of the more CPU intense games, but it's not enough to warrant a CPU upgrade for the 3080, that's for sure.

    • @hardwarevsgaming
      @hardwarevsgaming  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, if your 8700K can still handle all the games, software and tasks that you need to do, it's fine. Not unless you have other tasks or workloads that needs a much faster CPU.

    • @V1replade
      @V1replade 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Its not a Bottleneck. Just compare the last graphs. The 8700k stays at 4,3 GHz which is lower than ~4,7Ghz from the 10700k. The graphs show if you boost the 8700k to 4,9GHz it performs sometimes better as 10700k therefore there is no indication of a bottleneck here. Games need first be optimised to use the whole bandwith and power of the 3080 and maybe there we will see a bottleneck.

      What voltage does your 8700k require for 4.7GHz? What cooler do you use and is it delidded if I am allowed to ask? :)
      Mine gets very hot, around 80°C in NFS Payback (very cpu heavy) even with 4.4GHz and 1.14 volts with a Mugen Max, it's not delidded and I think I got a really bad TIM. It currently runs at 4GHz and 1016mv, max 56°C and silent but I would like to run it at 4.7GHz at least. I could primt a delid tool and delid it, I will try it with an lga 775 cpu before.

    • @maxemore
      @maxemore 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ronnie3626 I run auto vcore, mostly maxes out at 1.2V when under load. CPU non-delidded. Cooler is Corsair H100i 240mm AIO. Temps are about 60-65°C max when gaming and no higher than 80°C when stress testing with prime95 or realbench. I think if you hit 80°C when gaming, probably your cooling is not very good. Aside from delidding, you could try upgrading your cooler to a bigger dual-tower like the dark rock pro 4, ninja 5 or noctua nh-d15, or alternatively, a 240mm AIO or better. The 8700k is a hot chip in general but 4.0 GHz with 56°C definitely means you have insufficient cooling.

    i7-6700K OC'd (2015 cpu) will work with RTX 3080 but more suitable with a RTX 3060 Ti. We need a Bigger Core with more LANES to thread the Gap. Let's boost the frequency to 10GHz and watch it Blaze to Glory. Someone recently asked me why I upgraded from 6700K on a Gigabyte Z170X Gaming 7 to 8700K on a Gigabyte Z390 Auros Pro WiFi. To check out what they say is true. Then again, I felt like upgrading because it was like performing a DIY build. It took practically 4 years (2015 to 2019) to make a step forward. Expect the next step forward to occur in 2023. Progress is slow in the computer world as it takes 7 or 8 years for anything deserving or be considered worth purchasing. My 2008 DIY build with an E8500 CPU proves it is still functionable in 2021. Oh! I don't play Video Games at all as last time I did was in 2001 and 2003 playing Diablo 2 / Lord of Destruction. The only good thing about AMD is the creation of Threadripper.

      The RTX 30 cards, like the RX 5000 (Navi) and the new RX 6000 (RDNA2) are all PCIe 4.0. And are also working fine with PCIe 3.0. It has been tested by many reviewers already that there is very little to no difference at all when it comes to performance.

Was looking into overclocking it as I was expecting it to cause some bottle necking but from what I've seen in a few games I've played so far and this video there is no point in OC'ing my CPU much if at all to be honest...good stuff :)

      @@hardwarevsgaming Yeah I've been doing a bit of reading about it online since getting my 3080 last week and it seems it only struggles at lower resolutions etc but I've got a ultra wide monitor so this is a none issue for me. Was really expecting this CPU to bottleneck the 3080 due to how old it is but it still holds it's own to this day for sure. The only thing really holding my system back now is the 'slow' asf ram I've got that is 2666hz iirc :/

      @@hardwarevsgaming I've always thought that the speed of ram didn't really matter that much till I watched a few benchmark videos and the performance gain from 2133mhz to 3600mhz can have a 10+ fps increase in a good few games etc. Obviously the performance gain differs from game to game and on your resolution but its definitely something to consider when building a system.
