For those who don't know, this is literally one of THE best funk pianists in recent history. Go listen to the Jamiroquai albums since he joined in 2002. Absorb everything you can from this man right here.
Yes! Matt is sooo good at what he does. He also co-produced 100% of the last Jamiroquai album. And his new track "Interstellar love"is quite cool too - th-cam.com/video/NENaQvRIEs0/w-d-xo.html
I have learned most of these ideas on my own over the past 10 years (only a hobbyist, but my undergrad is in music prod), but I would have LOVED to have had someone share them with me with the level of charisma and knowledge that you naturally bring, Mr. Matt Johnson. My wife is a huge Jamiroquai fan, and I am thinking that I should be as well. In fact, as I ended up going in a different direction (I am now an English prof at a university here in Nashville), so I want to commend you on your incredibly effective teaching methods. You are a natural teacher. Lots of people may know these musical concepts, but very few people can communicatee them as compellingly as you do.
When building-up EDM songs (house, deep, prog, etc) it's always of a huge impact to enhance chords as a tension moment. This guy in 10 minutes just taught everyone new 3 years of music theory. Hahaha. Amazing.
I love those cases where you find something a bit bland but you can tell there's something there, then you break up the chords into just the right rhythms and intervals, add some passing note movements within those chords, and it just flows perfectly. A really fun exercise is to come up with SUPER dense chords, maybe you have 4x 5 note chords and together they cover ALL the notes, it probably sounds very out there, but try to play the notes individually, balance the intervallic and rhythmic movements by hinting at things other than chromatics, and there's probably a groove there where every note is just right.
I wanna learn those chords from this video every single one was so amazing and beautiful is it possible to get a chord sheet of the melodies that were played in the video?
funny when Matt was talking about the trick when you switch the minor chord to a major I immediately started singing "with all my heart, I love you baby" and voila!! Love the video!
Good video, great content. Only thing I’d say is it’s pretty difficult to see the notes you’re playing due to the color grading you do the keyboard, the black and white, and blue make it hard to follow the chords. May I suggest using an interface with higher contrast, or articulating the chords you play verbally?
Thanks for this it was great! usually, music theory is taught in a way more classical and boring way. And this man make it seem so easy, jealous of his piano skills now
Love your channel you really show so much on how to get better I'm new to piano I'm a drummer for over 30 years you explain and show things where it makes sense thank you so much👍
Great to connect a face for all the knowledge I’ve intuitively learned from listening to Jamiroquai! Too young to die got me a long way into music theory, thanks a lot!🔥🔥
It’s called the circle of fifths (or circle of fives/Vs) because each chord is the V7/dominant of the next in the sequence. You get through all 12 chords and the. It repeats.
Thank you for putting the on screen keyboard. I'm bad at hearing what key something is in when trying to learn something new. Seeing what keys you're hitting helps immensely 👍
in one of your recent videos, you acknowledged Mike Lindup's Living it up intro groove. Nice to see such respect between the most talented players. If I were capable, I would do the same for Steve Winwood and of course, Bob James. Still working on it
quick note for the editor: for the sneaky 5ths, the 5th is the amin that comes before the gmin, not the 2nd chord, which is just a differently voiced dmin (the root)
Those first 10 seconds of the video sounded like something the Persona series, especially the 4th, would have as its musicalization profile. If you could sometime, check out Persona 4 and Persona 5 soundtrack for a live pulse on what music a big chunk of the gaming youth sways to Thanks for the practical advice my guy 😅😅

the biggest producer flex is using a prophet as a midi keyboard
haha - is it still a flex when he has a Jupiter 8 (25K) and Moog 1 (7k)?

I loved Jamiroquai. This is indeed pure gold . . .love the harmonic breakdown of the music . . .
Everything Matt is playing sound like instant Jamiroquai! You really know where the root for the sound of that band lies (yes and in the bass...)
Matt did co-produce the entire last album! But I've heard Jay from Jamiroquai has some good chord ideas too.
love the prophet midi controller flex
hahah casually using a prophet
Just his casual living-room Prophet :)
