  • Fix your sparking microwave for $5 by replacing waveguide. If there is a lightning storm on the inside of your microwave for no apparent reason, a simple fix might be required, saving you a lot of time and money. This specific video is for a Panasonic microwave. A part called a waveguide that is made out of mica might be all you need from your local appliance store to fix the problem!

My GE microwave from 2005 finally crapped out. At first th-cam.com/users/postUgkxO_Bc204MGjxDl87cOKcdgaRhzSqGmv_g I was unsure because I was looking for something with the exact same features. Found it with this one. Interior space cavity was large, but the outside was smaller than my old one. I love the one-button push for 1-6 minutes, and the 30 second add or 30 second start. and MOST IMPORTANTLY, I love how you can adjust the power level during cooking. The reviews said it could not be done, but this marked all the other boxes. and happy to say, it does. I can hit 1 minute start, and change the power level from 10 to 5, 30 seconds in, without interruption. my favorite feature!

I had already made an appointment with an appliance repair company, but ran into this video and saw that this was the problem I was experiencing with my microwave. After watching the video, I cancelled the appointment and decided to go to a U Fix it place near my house and bought a sheet of this stuff, and cut it using template from my microwave. Well needless to say, I'm pretty ecstatic that it worked and was able to save some money! Thank you, thank you. It was indeed an easy fix.

Great Advice! If you are experiencing the "Lightning Storm" as described above, this fix is real AND inexpensive or FREE ! For my situation it was FREE and didn't require me to purchasing anything. Before you google a replacement part, try removing and cleaning the Mica Plate (be careful in the removal process because if the Microwave is old, the plate can be fragile). I gently washed mine until it was completely clean and replaced it. Whole process took less than 5 minutes. Microwave works fine now...

Cheaper yet, I just used a dish scrub pad to clean both sides and it works now. But thanks for the video, I would never have thought the problem was simply a dirty magnitron cover. This made my day, as I could not find a replacement microwave with all the features I like on my current one.

I had exactly the same issue about 11 years ago. On mine, the cover that you removed is in the top of the oven instead of on the side. I took it off, but even without it in place, I was still getting the lightning storm, which looked pretty scary. I ran my fingers around the edge of the hole, and noticed some jagged projections, as if the hole had not been cleanly punched out. They were very small, but I have seen on TH-cam that lightning can sometimes find its way down to something as small as a blade of grass - because electric charge accumulates at the tip of a sharp object. I ran a smooth file round the edge of the hole and then some fine sandpaper, and smoothed the projections away. I never did replace the mica(?) cover, and now, 11 years later, I *_am_* thinking of replacing the microwave - but because the count-down display is getting weak, and I can hardly read it any more in daylight. The magnetron and wave-guide have never given any trouble. The unit is about 25 years old, so although I replaced the capacitor once, it doesn't owe me anything.

Thanks for the video. It gave me an idea. But I did it for free, without replacing the waveguide with a new one. I removed it from the microwave, cleaned the carbon residue from the metal around where the arcing occurred, and thoroughly cleaned both sides of the waveguide with a paper towel and soapy water made using dishwashing soap. I then gently scrubbed away the carbon residue where the arcing occurred, and thoroughly dried the waveguide with a paper towel. I then placed it back in its original place but with the worst side facing out away from the metal. No cost and no parts replaced. But I also had a couple old microwaves from which I could have harvested parts had I needed to do so. I'll remember this easy fix if it ever happens again. Saved me a lot of money.

I'm Italian and I thought it was just a thing in Italy not to express in manufacturers guide that you're suppose to keep the waveguide spotless clean and never allow it to burn (when it turns gold its completely burned, even silver with brown spots that don't go away with washing is risky) and waiting for the sparks to replace it is simply taking chanches to end up with other esential parts broken, not just sparkles or in flames in the worst case scenario! A bunch of people dont know this, but if you use a lot the microwave like myself, people should be aware! It's so dishonest to omit that!!! You can buy waveguides in sheets, single or multiple packeging, even on amazon, put the original over it, draw streight lines and then cut it precisley with a cutter (No scissors!) and using ruler for a clean streight cut, in the end, make holes if necessary with a screwdriver of adequat diameter. With one sheet of approx dimentions of a copy paper, I can change my waveguide 3-4 times and it costs me even less than 5 $. It depends on your model and the dimentions you need.

It worked for me, I replaced the burned waveguide and no sparking. Some other tips: In my microwave, the metal wall behind the waveguide also had a burn mark. I read elsewhere that you can test your microwave without the waveguide by placing a bowl of water in the microwave oven and running it for a minute. If it doesn't spark, it should be ok. Following this process, even with the burn mark on the metal wall it ran without sparking.

Thanks, just saved me a new microwave. I didn't even need to replace the piece, just had to clean the drop of splatter that had dripped onto the inside of it. I thought corrosion on the waveguide had triggered the arcing but nope.

thank you for your youtube video. I found out that you were right and it was a simple process but due to the stores want the big bucks to fix it I went to eBay and found a supplier who shipped me 5 plates for less than $5 US. Go to eBay and search mica for microven.
    Again thank you.

I've already replace the waveguide with a new one I bought from the electrical store. But when I turned it on, it still sparking so I unplugged it and check what's going on. It smelled like burned rubber or plastic and the new waveguide is kind of warm to touch. Any idea what might gone wrong?

My microwave started sparking like crazy just 30 mins ago. It's not even old, only 8 months. What kinda made it worse is that back when I was younger we had a microwave that started sparking then blew up(not literally ofc), making one of the loudest bangs i've ever heard, causing a blackout and the wall socket also getting black burnt. I've always been worried about sparking microwaves ever since.

What causes this though? This makes my 6th microwave in 6 years..they randomly start sparking. I keep them clean and only use microwave safe bowls in it

Wow, that sounds easy enough. We have guests and more than likely it's the different style of cooking that cause the extra grease. I.E. they might not cover the food like we do.
