Probably one of the best versions of Fenrir. In the original myth Tyr raised him up, and he was a good boy. Odin was afraid of what he would do as he would not stop growing. So he made special chains to jail him and had Tyr distract him. Causing him to loose his arm.

@@JnEricsonxit felt so realistic, Atreus tricking himslef into thinking the dog wanted to live and that he was still eating, when they’re sick you notice any small amount of improvement from the previous day, sometimes even tricking yourself into thinking you see improvements all in hopes they’ll survive the sickness.
Death scene literally had me crying for several minutes. Made me remember when we had to bury our dog, he was also trying to eat before he passes so we thought he'd be okay. Makes a man teary.
Yeah it reminded me of when I went with my sister to have her cat put down, I cried like a baby that day. So the fenrir scene hit really close to home, and I cried like a baby again.

The crawl Fenrir does up to Atreus (4:52) and Kratos is too darn adorable. My husky does the same exact thing for attention and when Fenny did that, my heart turned so warm. Such a good wolfo.
My dog does a similar belly crawl when he stretches, only his back legs are stretched out behind him, and he's just pulling himself along with his front paws.

I love how this is technically a pretty myth accurate version of Fenrir, since originally he wasn't even a bad guy. He was good friends with Tyr and liked living with the Aesir, it only went wrong because Odin was scared of Fenrir's power as he continued to grow bigger and bigger. Once again, Odin fulfilled Ragnarok by trying to stop it.

The Eddas go out of their way to show you how the faults of the gods (Odin's paranoia, Thor's anger, Loki's mischievousness, Frigg's overprotectiveness, etc) will end up causing the downfall they were trying so hard to prevent. For example, the way Odin treats Jormungand and Fenrir in particular enrages Loki, who then gets revenge by manipulating Hod into slaying Balder (with the mistletoe arrow referenced in GOW '18}. Odin and Frigg consider this a grave betrayal, and bound Loki to a rock underneath a spitting serpent. Ragnarok will happen when Loki and his children will break free of their bonds and lead the jotun and the draugr to fight the Aesir, Vanir, elves, and Einherjar on the battle plain of Vigrid, where most will be slain, and the world submerged in ice and fire before all is reborn.
It gets worse when you realize that the only reason Fenrir agreed to be chained with the special bonds at all was because he trusted Tyr. To get him to agree to it, Tyr told him that if they do not release him that Fenrir could have his arm. They did not realease him, and Tyr kept his word.

When my 11 y.o. German Shephard passed about 5 years ago I thought that pain will be lesser, but it isnt. Now I have black Lab, he is great and fun and I love him, but I never truely forgot my good boi. He was special, sometimes I called him a werewolf because he was so long-haired. Miss you buddy.

The only reason he's that way in the myth is because the aesir imprisoned and betrayed him. And he spent a LONG time chained up(and possibly had a sword stabbed through his jaws), so he might be a little insane by the time Ragnarok hits
One thing I noticed about Fenrir is that after Atreus leaves, he never really showed his smiling side as much. He seemed really depressed and quiet, when he knew Atreus was going to leave and Fenrir himself has to move to Angrboda. And when he does show his happy side, it's only when Atreus is around. This shows so much of how Atreus and Fenrir grew together as boys. They both love each other so much and Fenrir just wanted to spend as much time with Atreus when he was revived by Atreus, but since Atreus can't, due to a prophecy that he must find other giants, Fenrir seemed really sad and quiet about it.
I'll be honest I originally planned on rating this gave a 5/10 just because of the fact our precious Fen died at the start. And I planned on doing that until Fen returned and when it happend I was thinking: nvm this game is a 10/10 (so yeah if not for that I would have given this game a 5/10)
I love how much Fenrir “talks”. I have two Shepard/Huskies and one of them is a talker. The fact the devs took the time to give him so much personality and how excited he gets when he sees his family just gives me the warm and fuzzies.
I am crying, I am so in love with Fenrir and all his little wolf-dog details! Like when he's slowly getting closer as they talk, Fen keeps his eyes on Kratos cause he's the pack leader, and then when Atreus is leaving for Asgard, Fen is wagging his tail in the back, just happy to see him. I adore him so much!!!❤️❤️❤️
This was an interesting play on the origin of Fenrir. I don't know the original myth of Loki and Angrboda giving birth to him, Jormungandr, and Hel, but this version of a normal, trained, and loved companion becoming a Giant is actually lovable
Let me give you the abridged version. Loki's triplets were split up at birth. Jormungand was thrown into Midgard where he grew large enough to encircle the entire world. The half-undead Hel went to Helheim, becoming the goddess of the dishonorable dead. Fenrir was still in Asgard, but Odin feared the wolf as he grew up. The overgrown dog was able to break any chain put on him. Eventually, the dwarves were told by Odin to create the chain Gleipnir, and Odin tried to trick Fenrir into willingly letting Gleipnir tie him up. Expecting treachery, Fenrir agreed to the condition that one of the gods would put their hand in his mouth. Tyr, being the bravest, volunteered. When the wolf was unable to break his chain, he bit off Tyr's hand. Yeah I definitely prefer good boi Fenrir.

I love how fen throws a fucking tree at atreus hoping that he could play fetch. Like, I think kratos and maybe thrud may be the only people who could actually play fetch or play rough like dogs do and not get ripped to pieces in the process.
Considering that in the Norse myths Fenrir is fated to kill Odin, I was expecting him to play a bigger part in Ragnarok after they set him up like that. Would have been pretty badass to fght alongside a giant realm-tearing wolf.
Right at the beginning of meeting Fen and him slowly dying, those words Atreus said were my last words to my pupper Perseus (Percy) before I had to put him down. My potato was sick and he wasn't going to make it. I cried for several minutes during that scene...only for my day to get better as best doggo came back! It made me appreciate the story and devs a lot more lol Best game! RIP Percy, you were dumb as a sack of potatoes...but you were my potato.
@@wardeng9 His spirit has been in Atreaus' knife since the start of the game, including the time he first met her so it's possible he was aware of everything going on and thus was able to recognize her.

Mimir mentions that there are four parts to a soul: form, mind, direction and luck. When Atreus accidentally pulled Fenrir's soul to his knife, only one of them went to the knife. The other three continued on, prolly in Helheim or maybe the Light in Alfheim (I forgot how death works in the in-game universe). I wonder if the three missing parts of Fenrir's soul were compensated by Garm's own when Atreus transferred Fenrir's into Garm. I wonder if the one part that remained of Fenrir's soul was the mind. That'd would make logical sense, since Fenrir did in fact overtake Garm's consciousness. With that in mind (heh), Fenrir is pretty much riding on Garm's form, direction and luck. Which makes even more sense, since Fenrir has all access to Garm's extra-dimensional abilities.
Yes. The devs really did their research here. The Norse did not believe in the concept of an indivisible soul like Christians do. Form, or "hamr", is basically what we physically see. Many gods, such as Odin, are able to change their hamr into various animal shapes, such as eagles or bears. Mind, or "hugr", is our consciousness. When Odin sends out his ravens, he is literally sending out manifestations of his mind to astral travel. This is a key component of shamanistic practices, especially seidr. Direction is "fylgja". Your direction usually takes the form of an animal familiar in dreams, and it's basically your "gut instinct" or your moral compass. And finally, luck, or "hamingja" Now, luck here isn't what we think of luck today, which is more a synonym for random chance. Luck in the heathen worldview means what spiritual and genetic traits and desires you've inherited from your ancestors. For example, if your family has a history of military service, chances are you will be unconsciously drawn to it as well.

I find it kind of funny how Fenrir kind of already existed before GOW Ragnarok in the form of Hrotvinir. In one of Mimir's tales, he mentions that Hrotvinir is Skoll and Hati's father. In fact, the wiki states that Hrotvinir is another name for Fenrir himself.
I think in the game, Hrodvitnir is a different wolf giant to Fenrir, since Fenrir can still be seen after ragnarok, while the younger jorm was seen sent back in time.
A week before I played this, my 19 year old cat passed. Fenrir's death in the beginning really hit home for me and made me cry. They did a good job of capturing the emotion of the moment you have to decide to let your beloved pet go. Still chokes me up. I loved that Fenrir was able to come back. Ugh such a great game 💗

At 2:45, you can hear what sounds like howling. Back when I lost my dog (Derby, ripe old age of 27), a few minutes after he died peacefully in my lap, every neighbor's dog started howling for a solid 10 minutes. No sirens or anything else to provoke him, it was as if they just knew that Derby had passed on. Old Derby was the senior dog on the street, and somewhat of an alpha--never aggressive or violent with the others, but I'd seen him break up fights and engage in corrective behavior with some of the pups, and whenver there was an outside threat (usually coyotes) he would always lead the charge and wouldn't rest until whatever it was had thought better of it and moved along. He was a good boy, and a brave boy, and I miss him every day.
At first I thought you were mistaking Skoll with Fenrir, but I looked it up and there actually is a version of the myth of Ragnarok where it's Fenrir who eats the sun instead of Skoll. This version is relatively obscure because the Skoll and Hati version being more popular and well-known.

I lost dogs in my life, and this scene unexpectedly broke me in ways that can barely be fixed. It was so realistic and painful cuz it reminded me of the time when my own dog refused to eat days before his death. I was about to hate this game cuz it got me so bad lol Luckily I got over it. Death scene literally had me crying for several minutes. Made me remember when we had to bury our dog, he was also trying to eat before he passes so we thought he'd be okay. Makes a man teary.
Strangely, while that hurt, seeing him come back made me teary eyed. That was great.

I love how this is technically a pretty myth accurate version of Fenrir, since originally he wasn't even a bad guy. He was good friends with Tyr and liked living with the Aesir, it only went wrong because Odin was scared of Fenrir's power as he continued to grow bigger and bigger. Once again, Odin fulfilled Ragnarok by trying to stop it.
Correct. The Eddas go out of their way to show you how the faults of the gods (Odin's paranoia, Thor's anger, Loki's mischievousness, Frigg's overprotectiveness, etc) will end up causing the downfall they were trying so hard to prevent.
For example, the way Odin treats Jormungand and Fenrir in particular enrages Loki, who then gets revenge by manipulating Hod into slaying Balder (with the mistletoe arrow referenced in GOW '18}. Odin and Frigg consider this a grave betrayal, and bound Loki to a rock underneath a spitting serpent. Ragnarok will happen when Loki and his children will break free of their bonds and lead the jotun and the draugr to fight the Aesir, Vanir, elves, and Einherjar on the battle plain of Vigrid, where most will be slain, and the world submerged in ice and fire before all is reborn.
It gets worse when you realize that the only reason Fenrir agreed to be chained with the special bonds at all was because he trusted Tyr. To get him to agree to it, Tyr told him that if they do not release him that Fenrir could have his arm. They did not realease him, and Tyr kept his word.

One thing I noticed about Fenrir is that after Atreus leaves, he never really showed his smiling side as much. He seemed really depressed and quiet, when he knew Atreus was going to leave and Fenrir himself has to move to Angrboda. And when he does show his happy side, it's only when Atreus is around.
This shows so much of how Atreus and Fenrir grew together as boys. They both love each other so much and Fenrir just wanted to spend as much time with Atreus when he was revived by Atreus, but since Atreus can't, due to a prophecy that he must find other giants, Fenrir seemed really sad and quiet about it.

This was an interesting play on the origin of Fenrir. I don't know the original myth of Loki and Angrboda giving birth to him, Jormungandr, and Hel, but this version of a normal, trained, and loved companion becoming a Giant is actually lovable
Let me give you the abridged version.
Loki's triplets were split up at birth. Jormungand was thrown into Midgard where he grew large enough to encircle the entire world. The half-undead Hel went to Helheim, becoming the goddess of the dishonorable dead. Fenrir was still in Asgard, but Odin feared the wolf as he grew up. The overgrown dog was able to break any chain put on him. Eventually, the dwarves were told by Odin to create the chain Gleipnir, and Odin tried to trick Fenrir into willingly letting Gleipnir tie him up. Expecting treachery, Fenrir agreed to the condition that one of the gods would put their hand in his mouth. Tyr, being the bravest, volunteered. When the wolf was unable to break his chain, he bit off Tyr's hand.

My potato was sick and he wasn't going to make it. I cried for several minutes during that scene...only for my day to get better as best doggo came back! Mimir mentions that there are four parts to a soul: form, mind, direction and luck. When Atreus accidentally pulled Fenrir's soul to his knife, only one of them went to the knife. The other three continued on, prolly in Helheim or maybe the Light in Alfheim (I forgot how death works in the in-game universe). I wonder if the three missing parts of Fenrir's soul were compensated by Garm's own when Atreus transferred Fenrir's into Garm. I wonder if the one part that remained of Fenrir's soul was the mind. That'd would make logical sense, since Fenrir did in fact overtake Garm's consciousness. With that in mind (heh), Fenrir is pretty much riding on Garm's form, direction and luck. Which makes even more sense, since Fenrir has all access to Garm's extra-dimensional abilities.

A week before I played this, my 19 year old cat passed. Fenrir's death in the beginning really hit home for me and made me cry. They did a good job of capturing the emotion of the moment you have to decide to let your beloved pet go. Still chokes me up. I loved that Fenrir was able to come back. Ugh such a great game 💗

This is a liberty in mythology I have zero problems with to let slide. This was a great idea, and the person who thought it up deserves a bloody raise!
Obviously we all loved Fenrir in god of war ragnarok and I am so happy they didn't go with real norse mythology on this part of the game
At 2:45, you can hear what sounds like howling.
Back when I lost my dog (Derby, ripe old age of 27), a few minutes after he died peacefully in my lap, every neighbor's dog started howling for a solid 10 minutes. No sirens or anything else to provoke him, it was as if they just knew that Derby had passed on.
Old Derby was the senior dog on the street, and somewhat of an alpha--never aggressive or violent with the others, but I'd seen him break up fights and engage in corrective behavior with some of the pups, and whenver there was an outside threat (usually coyotes) he would always lead the charge and wouldn't rest until whatever it was had thought better of it and moved along. He was a good boy, and a brave boy, and I miss him every day.

At first I thought you were mistaking Skoll with Fenrir, but I looked it up and there actually is a version of the myth of Ragnarok where it's Fenrir who eats the sun instead of Skoll. This version is relatively obscure because the Skoll and Hati version being more popular and well-known.
The Sun's just a big ball, what's a good boi going to do but chase a ball that's thrown in his direction??

after the first 15 minutes of this game, his death made me uncontrollably cry. now that i know he comes back, kicks ass in Ragnarok, and is pretty much living the good life after all that AND YOU CAN PET HIM makes me feel sooooo damn much better inside!
My dog passed in my arms like this and I've never felt anything heavier in my arms.

The animation of Fenrir’s fur, his face, and his eyes are all so captivating. Really makes you feel like he’s a real wolf.
Wouldn’t be surprised if they mo-capped a real dog for Fenrir. The animation is amazing.

That scene of atreus holding fen as he's about to pass hits so hard. I'm glad that they got to be together again
I like how the developers were able to make it so that Atreus or Loki isn’t the father of jormungandr and fenrir unlike the mythology but still had him play a large part of his life like for example they made it so that Atreus created the world snake and have fenrir as Atreus’s pet
I lost dogs in my life, and this scene unexpectedly broke me in ways that can barely be fixed. It was so realistic and painful cuz it reminded me of the time when my own dog refused to eat days before his death. I was about to hate this game cuz it got me so bad lol
Luckily I got over it. It just goes to show how dogs are so lovable and can make you emotional.

You could tell Atreus loved him dearly, so reluctant to let him go.
And even the normally gruff Kratos seemed to reserve some tenderness for him.

The scene where after being put into Garm's body where fen, lying down, slowly crawls forward with his front legs and just lays his head to the side near Atreus... it's fucking peak goodest boy energy.
The fact that fenrir was trying to do the good boy sneaky crawl when he's roughly 10 m tall is the cutest possible thing!
I imagine they just had a dog just practically breathing on the mic for every noise fenrir made
insane little detail, but when Fen dies and his soul parts leave you notice on part actually enter Atreus' knife. his Direction I'd wager
this game is a masterpiece
