@@Trucker231610 She is...but she's not a commercial star. That's one of the differences between today and back in the day. The best singers and bands were also the top of the charts. It's just not possible in today's music business. They have to be Taylor Swift or Cardi B. Both will be forgotten while Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, Carol King, Stevie Nicks, etc etc, will always be remembered.

@@davidhapka5410 You're right the music business has changed and it always will that's why it's up to us(The Old Folks) to help the non-pop stars get introduced to the new generation. Not just bash the new music because there's always gonna be new music we just have to keep the good stuff alive.
I think the reaction channels are a good tool for this, this is the new radio station.
I try to support channels that play classic Rock and blues you'd be surprised how many young people are liking the classic stuff and wish music was like that today, so maybe there will be a shift soon.
Don't count on the radio stations the record companies are paying them.

@@Trucker231610 It's much too late. Remember when it was about radio, 45's and 33 albums? Musicians who played instruments and singer/songwriters who created music that will endure forever? Just as with most mediums and art forms today, everything has been dumbed down and scattered among too many platforms. I call today's music, disposable. Nothing more than product. Instantly forgettable. Etc etc.

It's so sad that she passed so early, her voice cuts right thru you, like a hot knife thru butter. There will be no other artist like it. The closest currently to Janis has to be Beth Hart. Check out her music. She did "I'll Take Care Of You" and "I'd Rather Go Blind" with Joe Bonamassa. Absolutely Great! She also had her own band, here's a couple of song to check out. This was her great breakout performance. My favorites are the studio versions of "Piece Of My Heart" and "Me and Bobby McGee". I don't believe there is a live version of Me and Bobby McGee as she died before it was released and she never knew that it became her #1 hit. Me and Bobby McGee was written by music legend in his own right, Kris Kristofferson with Fred Foster. She actually dated Kris for a few months during the year prior to her death.
quote from Kris - ("Unfortunately, the first time I heard Janis’s recording of ‘Bobby McGee’ was when I had just gone down because she had died,” Kristofferson recalled. “But, I remember the producer, he asked me to come by his office the next day. He had something he wanted to play me. I didn’t even know she cut it. And, uh, he played it for me and I had to leave the room. It was impossibly hard to hear. So much love and emotion going into the song and knowing that she wasn’t there to enjoy that. … )

I'm glad you enjoyed this performance, and I loved hearing your reactions. This group was called Big Brother and the Holding Company, and Janis very quickly emerged as the star. Eventually she left and started a solo career. Before joining Big Brother, she was singing blues and country blues, usually with acoustic accompaniment, and her voice was strong and flawless. After joining the group, she had to start screaming to be heard over the amplified guitars, and her voice began to change and deteriorate, which gave her the rasping sound. But she was an exciting performer, and this show made her a star.

Janis Joplin will always be one of a kind. You have to remember, this was 1967. Up to that point, most female rock and roll singers were either innocent and demure singing in their party dresses or sex kittens performing for men. No woman had ever put such emotion into a song like Janis. And, quite frankly, there has not been a female singer like Janis ever since. Female singers are still either innocent and demure or play the sex kitten role for the male audience. Janis is the only one who knew how to get down and dirty with the guys.

If you watch the whole video of Monterey Pop, history was made for several performers. Otis Redding, the Who, Janis and the
Jefferson Airplane became known nationally. Oh, yea, I almost forgot Jimmie Hendrix! I just missed getting a ride to it by
none other than David Crosby and Graham Nash. I'd see Joplin and the Airplane at the Avalon and Fillmore ballrooms or
during anti-war protests but this performance was the absolute best she ever did! On Big Brother's album, it didn't come
out the same. Like with the Grateful Dead, these bands were better live than in an impersonal studio. Glad it was
preserved by technology as crude as it was. Surprised you knew who Mama Cass was on sight! The most forgotten
performer is Otis Redding who died tragically in an airplane crash right after "Sitting By the Dock of the Bay" came out.
Few people know he wrote "R-E-S-P-E-C-T" made more famous by Aretha Franklin. Otis' rendition of "Try a Little Tenderness"
at the Pop is fantastic too. I left Oregon as soon as I turned 18 because I knew what was happening in S.F. would
never happen again. At 73 now, I was right. In the video, David Crosby mentions what a great sound system they had.

I was there, and it was cool. Apart from Cass Elliot's camera time, and Clive Davis to her left (in white jacket), the effect on our audience was that this was a stunning continuation into a new era of music. A female front singer, all of the acts that preceded it....the totallity was the diversity of muscial expression we now have, and the absolute shattering of the female performance. I'd dropped a little peyote, but I'm pretty sure this is accurate.
