I love my Dawn jeans. I actually extended the rise to make them more high rise than mid rise on me. I have made size 24’s and 22’s and the 22’s are now feeling a little too big so I’m looking at sewing the size 20 with maybe a mum tum adjustment. I made mine with a zipper as she has these instructions also. I have made one button fly version and found immediately that the number of buttons were not enough so these are used on the farm only. I have made both the wide leg and the straight leg, preferring these styles. I found the tall length to be perfect in inseam length and of course I made them a higher rise. I wear them constantly to the point where I have to make more as the zip broke on my last remaining pair.

We need to be wise and discerning when paying $25 US dollars for a paper pattern. This is something I won’t do. Pattern designers take note. No condemnation on using the model sizes of their choice. It’s their company. No need to be sorry in your honest review of model posing. I appreciate learning why.

After looking through all the non-stretch patterns for jeans out there, it’s probably one of the best. But it depends on your fit issues. I’ll probably make these again. Especially after that time I’ve had this week with my latest pair. 🤦🏼♀️ Thanks for watching Kristi!
I’ve made four pairs of these in sizes 16 and 18. All variations except the shorts.
I made a sway back adjustment and added width to the inner front thigh and that’s working well for my fit issues. My thighs being a size larger than my hips is what makes RTW jeans not fit me well, they all keep riding down.
I like how the fly goes far down the front. However, I didn’t like that the buttons are spaced so far apart and the bottom one is too far down. I only made one pair with buttons, the rest has zippers.
I also don’t like the front pocket openings, they are too small, so I changed the shape a little bit on my last pair; gave them a gentler curve that ended a little bit lower down the side.
It’s the first trouser pattern I’ve ever used.
Excellent! I just noticed the hand opening size yesterday since I want to adjust the fit of mine and it’ll impact the pocket and make them smaller. And then I had to adjust those too. But now I know to adjust the pattern before I make another pair.

The Dawns are great! Make them snug! Non stretch denim relaxes over the course of the day.
I've made a pair of the Dawn curved size. I found the fit to be very baggy around the hip and legs. Pocket openings are small and something I'd look at changing if I make these again. I had to make quite a few changes to the pattern including shortening the rise, sway back adjustment, and making the hip/leg areas smaller, though I did have to add to the inner thigh. Some of these issues are due to my body shape and I expected that I'd have to make these changes. I'm wondering if just making a smaller size would work better? I also found that I had to grade between a couple sizes between the waist/hip. Alter all the alterations I made I really liked the jeans though I may need to keep looking for a pattern that fits my figure better right off the hop.
That’s a lot of adjustments. Nice job persevering and getting jeans you like. I’m thinking the same, that I should have sized down again.
I think the reason why there aren’t a lot of posts of the curve range is because the drafting is not good. I’ve only heard negative things about the curve range on IG. I’ve mostly seen the criticism on stories as most haven’t finished making them.
Those thoughts were expressed to MN but weren’t received well.
They definitely don’t mimic the regular Dawns in proportion. I’m right at the top of the lower size range and I just expanded them for my waist. The curve version wasn’t out yet, thank goodness, so I’m happy with mine. Was that the complaint or were they just not sewing together well?
Now that’s a shame! And double shame that they didn’t take the feedback well. Shoot.
One of the critiques - and the one who asked for her money back - is quite small. Probably a size 8. I can't speak to the technical points each made, but I am definitely a curve (42w, 52h) and I love how they fit me. YMMV.

I wish she would use models of all ages. They’re all very young with perky bodies. I know this issue has been mentioned to MN a few years ago, but still no change. There are so many great patterns out there that I can see on a 50+ body and those are the ones I choose from.
Yesss! I’m so glad you said this. I think this every time I see their patterns. I 100% agree. I didn’t mention it because I don’t want to sleight the models. There’s a lack of all sorts of diversity- age, body types, people. It’s common in most pattern companies. I was just shopping a jeans pattern that I’ve heard good things about and the designer is not a perky 20 year old. But there were no photos on the pattern product description. And because it’s not a well known designer- it’s going to be hard for me to see how it fits before I buy it. I’m trying to support all sorts of companies but they’re not making it easy.

Always appreciate your frankness Saremy. These are my favourite jeans, having made 5 pairs (what?!). Are you using a different pocket?
Ooh! You’re a pro! Are you talking about the front pockets? If so (and there isn’t a pocket stay on the pattern) I probably demonstrated how to make one with one layer at the center front and as tummy panel. It’s probably in the Cutting live stream. Pretty sure I used their pocket for the Back Pockets.

I made the straight leg curve version of these in a size 22 an 8 oz denim and I found I had the same issues as you, like too much ease in the hips and thighs, especially after wearing. I can take them in. I am wondering if using a heavier weight denim will help with bagging out?
I do love these pants and the instructions. I did have to make a lot of fit adjustments but I always do for pants. I will not make the button fly again. The instructions and result were wonderful but when I wear them the fly pulls badly and doesn't regain its shape. Maybe my fabric and anatomy combined? I'll do a zipper next time, the instructions are included in he pdf, but I might use a technique I saw you demonstrate instead.
Thanks for watching! I ended up retrofitting my Dawns and they’re a lot better. I think you’re right about using a heavier denim or maybe not a twill weave. Many non-stretch denims loosen over the day. They give a tip to fit closer but I definitely didn’t fit tight right. By comparison I made the Halfmoon 101 jeans from Spoonflower denim and that stuff is never gonna bag out 😂

Ooh that’s awesome. I’m not necessarily recommending the Halfmoon jeans. They’re not bad at all! But they’re for a particular body type in my opinion and I do not possess that type. I fit them within an inch of their life! 😝

My policy is: if YOU like it, they’re perfect. I’ve learned there a lot of preferences out there. And it’s not my butt. 😎 But I have strong opinions about my own. I just did a three month Pants Fitting thing in my Guild and I was starting to know people better by their butts 😂
I have comments! I like the long zipper to get over my hips. I do think the curve has wider legs. I just looked for my pictures in the hashtag and I totally can't find them. I go to my account and i clearly have them tagged. I blame Instagram and their "top" for picking skinny people tbqh. I was really looking forward to this review because two prominent sewists tore it up saying it wasn't balanced and the ease wasn't right among other things. I can't argue with their points because I don't know, but it's tried and true for me. I can say for sure my next of these to sew is the Dawn - it's already cut out and waiting for me.
Love the comments! What ease were they talking about? Around the body? I feel like that’s relative to your denim choice and preferences. Do you always put a zipper in your Dawn jeans? Sounds like you’ve made more than one pair! I’ll definitely make them again after I fix a couple fit issues.
@@SewSewLive I've always put a zipper in. I've made a toile, 2 shorts, and the wide that are really very wide. They said there wasn't enough ease in the hips around the body. The two critiques were from Minimal machinist and winmichele (edited)

how do you know if the crotch is too long? I feel like this for lander pants. If I pull them up sitting comfortably in the crotch it is above my natural waist and very baggy around the waist. would you shorten the crotch?
I have to do that very thing on most pants. But I shorten it from the waist. So if you folded your waist and down, they’d probably be a better length in the crotch, correct? The next time you make a pair, You can use the lengthen/shorten line on the torso of the pants. (Above the crotch point but below the pocket opening so you don’t have to adjust it). Overlap the amount you want to remove.

A sample is always so helpful. I think the top down center out method can be a good starting point but honestly I think that method is better suited to looser pants. The Dawns are pretty straight though so maybe it’d work pretty good. And don’t forget that non-stretch denim stretches out over the course of wearing them so fit them snug. Otherwise you don’t even need to unbutton them to take them off at the end of the day. 🫣
