What Bit this White Shark? & Footage From California You Have to See to Believe

- In this week's Shark Observations, I share footage from one of three unique locations I discovered where white sharks converge daily in such large numbers that it is hard to believe it's right here in Southern California. Shark Biologist, Alison Towner gives me insight as to what might be the cause for these daily aggregations of sharks, sometimes numbering in the dozens. I also film a shark with a very large scar around it's gills. An apparent bite mark. And something is happening to the kelp forests in California...

So far 50% of this year's Shark Week has been very disappointing.....super glad we can count on you to provide beautiful videos with a calming and educational narration. Reminds me of how Shark used to be. Thank you.
There are a few interesting episodes: learning that many smaller (pups, juveniles and teens) white sharks are actually siblings with the same mothers and fathers who mate season after season; as well as the 'theory' that male white sharks try to control a territory to feed and 'posture' to attract their mates (again?) to come to them.
I looked forward to watching shark week when I was growing up. Like all great shows, this one has run its course. It’s unwatchable now.
@@SJM6791 Sadly true, though there are a few kernels of gold amid the 'dross'. All you gotta do is spend time watching the sharks 'do their thing' and learn new and interesting factoids without the 'melodrama'.

@@rosesippel2932 Watched that Kina Scollay riding in the shark shaped cage with fins and a tail; makes me wonder if we could learn more without the melodramatic narration and voice overs; did the 'attention' the sharks of different genders mean 'approval' or disapproval--get outa here or come hither?. It goes with that South African ep, where the males are theorized to stake out a territory to bring a receptive female to them and fight other males who enter their territory. We have a lot more we can learn in a fun way...

Sharks ''dancing'' is them sizing up each other and smaller sharks always give space to larger sharks. This way they avoid unnecessary fighting for resources that could hurt both of them.

I will most likely get torched in the comments for this, but here goes. I am an avid hunter and fisherman, as are most of my friends. We hate to see stuff like this. One thing everyone glosses over is the fact that while we may hunt or fish, we are 100% conservationists. We all ( my friend group) pick up trash when we are out in the woods or on the creek. We never keep any illegal fish or sport fish for that matter. If we fish for food its always bluegill. There are 10s of millions of those and clearing some out is actually healthy for other fish. Bluegill will raid and destroy bass and muskie nests. I just hope some out there that hate on us sportsmen and women understand that there a lot like me. We care deeply for the quality of the environment, we just see and understand how to do it responsibly
In some cases, hunting is necessary to curb overpopulation. I live in the South, and deer will starve or die of disease if left alone. In general people use their kills for food. Hunting is also imperative to control the wild pig population. Wild pigs have been introduced to the US, and reproduce like tribbles on crack. They're also aggressive.
A lot of people are like this. Huge active conservationalists. It’s usually just a small group that over fishes or hunts or just does the wrong things in general. A good hunter and fisher prioritizes the environment first, never taking more than necessary and following any rules and regulations given.
@@ShadowFox1412 I think what you mean is that there are usually just a few hobby fishermen overfishing. Right?
Because if you look at the whole picture - very very many people
/organozations are overfishing. That's where the problem of highly overfished oceans come from.. it is amazing how some countries have no laws about that.
@@MsLilyFay oh yeah for sure. Mostly just referring to individuals and private groups when I say most want to protect what they hunt and fish cause they understand that it’s a balancing act. Large corporations are awful and the major issue. But small scale you get very decent folk just looking for a bit of fun while also keeping in mind the conservation aspects

It's sad our kelp forests are disappearing. I cannot understand why humans disrespect our earth so much.

Your channel and your content never ceases to amaze me. I've watched many clips about Great White Sharks on a lot of other channels but the way how you represent these majestic creatures to your audience is outstanding. It's not only the videos that are awesome it's also your calm way of narrating and explaining everything without sounding superior or all-knowing.

The diminishing kelp forests are really sad to watch
Truly shocking. I could hardly stand to watch the 2021 footage.
As a fisherman, I find it doubly disappointing because kelp serves so many roles in the world of fishing. Besides the environmental benefits, kelp basically serves as a giant college campus for bait fish. Luckily I live in MA and pollution laws and water regulations are a bit tighter here. But man, states like California, Louisiana and Texas have been crushing their coastlines with fracking and oil pollution that is happening at an alarming rate.
As a 66 year old fisherman, surfer and boater in SoCal, I’ve seen kelp beds come an go over time. Kelp beds have always come back. It’s cyclical and natural. White shark populations are way up, seal populations are way up, there are more marine protected areas in California than ever before. What we don’t need is the chattering and the drama from those who treat the environment as a religion.
@@rd4660 indeed... climate fundamentalists are going to be a real threat to us all. Yet, I'll be honest, this is a first hearing about kelp for me... can't it be planted? and are we?
@@rd4660 so the 95% decline isnt proof enough? I get that a kelp forest can dissapear and another one pops up in a natural cycle, but if it doesnt come back... its not a cycle is it? Then its Just a train headed for a final destination

I highly recommend scuba diving with them without a cage. They are quite fearful of divers but amazing to see in their element if you are lucky enough to be graced by their presence. You can’t help but feel as if they are perfect in design.

Hands down, this is one of the best channels on TH-cam. Thank you for being an advocate not only for Great White Sharks, but for our oceans. Our oceans are suffering terribly and the more channels that can be out there bringing attention to it, is most important. Every little bit helps. I would love for you to able to venture to some of the areas of the gulf coast of Florida for a year and do similar videos. Red Tide and Blue-Green Algae are out of control and smothering the oceans in areas closer to shore and is suffocating the life out of countless marine animals and disrupting the eco balance so greatly that it may never recover in many places. Thank you again for doing what you do!

As a surfer, swimmer and paddler in So.Cal, I would love to know these high concentration areas so I can avoid any close encounters.
We had a concentration area near us, it was filmed for a documentary a few years ago. The local fisherman triangulated its location from footage on the boat and went in and essentially wiped out the sharks. Nothing exists there now - its like a dessert.
@@howardevans7384 I understand your point and I am one who would definitely leave them to their (the sharks) natural territory.
However the reason I ask is not to fish them out but for public notice. You see here in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties many beaches and surf spots are incredibly populated with surf camps and surfers and swimmers doing their summer activities.
Again, it's for public safety and I will be happy to get out of their territory for however long they want if it means no one will be accidentally touched, especially a child on a boogie board beyond the surf break.

yea past shark weeks I watched seem like it focused mostly on the people and what they were doing and the funthey were having rather than actually doing shark education and stuff.

Kelp forests should be handled in the same way as national parks.
What badly!
Kelp is seasonal. It dies back every winter and then regenerates in Spring again. Difficult to manage a natural growth cycle that sheds most of itself to survive the winter and storm season. They are not like conifers that don't mass drop/shed, or evergreens that just drop leaves.
*And we'll manage out own forests, too, thanks. Governments suck at it. *Knowing for a thriving timber community.

When affordable drones came along lots for amateur aerial photographers were spotting whales caught up in nets and other stuff. National Parks Australia then put a 500m restriction on drone operators from approaching whales. This was done so commercial TV wouldn't miss out on the video copyrights.
National Parks authorities are corrupt as hell.

Huge fan of your work, have been subscribed for some time-thank you. As an avid surfer, I am familiar with a few locations. With summer coming, are any of the counties going to post warning signs for beach goers? Is your work garnering more scientific acknowledgment? From my perspective this is ground breaking given the high numbers of GWS this close to population centers, and so close to shore. Hopefully your brilliant work will be put in the forefront of the shark research communities/universities in CA and globally. Where does this all stand?

Yeah this channel has helped me feel better about the white shark. I grew up in OC, Newport and Huntington Beach were my summer time stomping grounds so it’s really interesting to see this, I had no idea there were so many. The mavic pros a great drone, keep up the awesome vids 👍🏻🇺🇸

be aware that kelp decreases in the winter and picks back up in spring and summer.
It is the opposite in Southern California, where warmer water temps in the summer and fall cause the kelp to die off, and return in the late fall and winter through spring when the water is colder. Malibu Artist might not understand this annual cycle. As others have mentioned, though, there is a sea urchin problem reslting in overeating the kep forests, and perhaps other issues too. But the warm water is a big culprit.

@@rosesmith6208 star fish, but their numbers have dwindled from the mysterious wasting disease, and sea otters primarily. There are no sea otters in Southern California at the moment.

Kelp has a predator - the sea urchin. Sea otters love urchins. I think one of the reasons we're seeing the kelp forests suffer is because the sea otter populations are declining. The last time I was in Monterey, wherever I saw Sea otters the kelp was fine. No sea otters - no kelp. It's system currently out of balance.
Not just sea otters. One of the main predators of sea urchins is the sunflower starfish. But they are being devastated by an unknown wasting disease that no scientist understands currently. So basically the sea urchin has no predators at all. And the thing is, they don’t even starve to death, they just keep living.
I watched a thing on how the Great White was thought to have been a suspect in killing the Sea Otter, not even eating them but it was thought of as practice for male juveniles ! ?????
Lol, that's what I said. Missing sea otters is almost always the culprit.

The missing predator is the sea otter. Sea urchins eat kelp and sea otters eat the urchins. The problem is a broken food chain.

I have done archaeology from Canada to the Channel Islands. The ancient peoples used to live near kelp forests or "kelp highway." The amount of kelp forests have quadrupled since the last ice age. A few may be dying as stands of trees die when beetles get to them, but the overall numbers in North America have grown and if the ocean gets warmer, all of the Alaska Peninsula and the Bering strait will be filled with it. Kelp is doing fine, it is overgrowing Japan to the point of ruining their fishing grounds. No, the kelp forests are and will do fine as they have for millions of years, they will just move locations, as will the sharks.
