    This channel is GROWING in real-time and it's beautiful to observe. You've now got the actual science community studying your footage because of behaviours never caught on film before. All natural, no human interference, no cages, no bait in the water, no over dramatic narration or score. Fantastic! Oh and not long before you catch a breach from the drone Mali. Be patient.
    Quick question. That final shot of Arrow. Is it the same shot as the first with him in but from a different angle? Or is he deliberately coming in for a closer look on those birds thus making them fly away? I know Tiger sharks go for birds but never realised White's did too. Thanks

    I recently had my first "experience" with a white shark while surfing off one of the beaches that I'm pretty sure you film at. Until I found your channel I would have likely freaked out and hightailed it to shore but seeing your videos made me realize that we are not on the menu for the most part and I was able to somewhat enjoy the experience and I ended up staying in the water for another hour or so.

    Seeing your videos makes me draw a parallel between sharks and humans, and humans and geese.
    In both cases, the two species simply coexists most of the time.
    I was confronted by a flock of geese blocking the sidewalk I was cycling down. They were a large enough group to cover about 1/4 of a football field, spilling out onto the high speed road taking up a lane and on the other side taking over 1/2 a parking lot. I went slowly without making eye contact and I was fine.
    With the sharks you record you can see for the most part the sharks are completely uninterested in people.
    Given how many encounters go unnoticed it is no wonder there are a few dangerous encounters.
    One caution I would give is for people to avoid swimming over deep water in seal territory. Because a ballistic attack from below uses only distant vision, and from afar a sun silhouette of a human easily could be mistaken for a seal. I say this because of the attack on the shark cam torpedo highlighted on TH-cam in the past.

    Arrow could have a good life ahead of him. Look at Lucy, down at Guadalupe. She is a fully, mature, gigantic white with a busted tail. She has shifted her mechanics to grab prey. Arrow will probably do the same, over time. If he gets the time, that is.

    • @petergleave7807
      @petergleave7807 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Personally, I suspect Arrow will be more than capable of fully adjusting to living a normal life despite the loss of function of one pectoral fin.
      Difficult as it might be for readers of this post to believe, a few years ago I was looking out of my kitchen window into the back garden when I saw a fox come through the boundary hedge from next door and start pottering along the edge of the herbaceous border at the back of the garden. Arriving at the end, it turned towards me in order to follow the border of the flower bed on the left-hand side of the garden towards the house and something about its appearance must have prompted me to examine it more closely. On doing so, I did a double take as I realised that it was missing BOTH legs on the right-hand side of its body! Fortunately, I keep a pair of binoculars for watching the birds, so was able to get a good look at the animal. It was in good condition; it didn't appear to be thin or mangy, and had obviously made a good recovery from what I can only surmise must have been a disastrous encounter with a car which had resulted in the loss of the limbs at the shoulder and pelvic joints. Incredibly, not only had it survived the accident - which struck me as remarkable in itself - but it had recovered and adapted to its disability so successfully that it seemed perfectly o.k. At one point, it broke into a brief (ahem! fox - what else? ) trot, and there was no sign of any abnormality in its gait.
      Fortunately, the ready availability of food scraps available from garbage bags left out for weekly collection (this was in the days before 'wheely bins' ), road kill victims, and, doubtless, a cavalier attitude on the part of late-night revellers regarding the disposal of the unwanted remains of their take-away meals, had provided the fox with an adequate alternative food source to live prey which was enabling it not just to survive but thrive.
      Returning to the subject of Arrow, I wonder whether that pectoral fin is, in fact, not missing but cut through on the underside so it has folded upwards into the vertical plane? Either way, it saddens me to see this beautiful animal disfigured like this.*
      *By the way, prior to discovering Carlos's amazing channel, I would never for one minute have believed that I would live to see the day when I would make such a comment about White Sharks!
      As a retired sea kayaker whose worst nightmare made whole would have been the sudden appearance alongside of a Great White longer than my kayak, my former opinion of the species would have been along the lines of 'Sod them and all who sail in them'.
      In that respect, the discovery of Carlos's channel certainly came as a mind-expanding experience!

    Depth is definitely used as a predator avoidance technique in streams, with small fish rearing in shallows along the edge where larger fish can't go. This reminds me of the orcas and dolphins that have learned how to temporarily "beach" themselves in shallow water where there are abundant fish or seals present. Good the white sharks don't do it to beach walkers ;) Their foraging sounds like my suburban deer. Like visiting spots along a daily coastal route and stopping to eat where there is food, staying if prey is abundant, moving on when the energetic costs to catch prey are too high. But because great white sharks are distributed worldwide, their feeding habits are likely shaped by their local habitat and the behavior of the most common prey.

  • @wookieelicious9569

    Amazing to see sharks just swim by and have a casual look at someone in the water. By all means I'm still hesitant to be out there but given they swim in shallow waters makes you rethink.
    I had the pleasure of seeing a great white up front whilst I was on a trawler back in the late 70's when I was 10 and with Jaws only been released a couple of years earlier it made me terrified of the water. Note still am especially with the amount of shark attacks by Great Whites in Australia. Your channel has opened up my views of these magnificent animals. Couple of my mates surf at Newcastle and see a lot of juveniles in the area especially at Stockton Beach, NSW. Great job and looking forward to more videos and commentary.

    Hopefully Arrow will learn to adapt his swimming to compensate for what is basically a loss of one fin. Imagine to steer a plane and land safely with a rudder that's snapped off.
    But I think he'll survive but it won't be as easy catching prey. It's also going to make life more dangerous for him too not firing on all cylinders.
    Just prey he doesn't become so desperate that he has no choice but to take the easy prey....
    Humans.

    • @Alex-vq9vj
      @Alex-vq9vj 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wouldn't be a viable survival strategy to go after humans: we're simply not energy-rich enough for a juvenile or grown GWS!
      There's a reason that even when rare deadly attacks happen, you don't hear of GWS *eating* humans...

  • @stephenleblanc4677
    @stephenleblanc4677 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very cool. The body design of something like a shark is optimized to survive overall average birth to reproduction environment. Bodies are in many ways adaptable and a shark that exists for a while, even a few years or a lifetime, is something better than average ... even 10-20% better ... might be expected to survive so long as there is not a long period of worse average conditions. Read The Beak of the Finch.

    Hello Malibu Artist, Vic here. As a premier Apex Predator. The White shark is a torpedo shaped phenomenon! With over 300 readily available teeth in its mouth and replacing a whole row of teeth when one is broken off! One has to believe that it’s cartilage skeleton has to be able to regenerate its pectoral fins, in due time. Again it was injured most probably by a fishing net, however if it were born this way. It has had to deal with a constant up hill battle just to survive! Knowing so little of all sharks, it’s safe to say that this particular fish will survive through the ability to survive as a species for some serious amount of time! That said, Thank you got your awesome and beautiful work you do!

    Do we know how often GWS need to feed? Or how regular it would need to do so, at a minimum, to sustain life? I'd have been interested to ask the shark scientist that. Arrow certainly didn't look underweight. Any ideas how long ago he sustained that injury? I'm sure your PhD candidate would have been able to tell.

    I did a shark dive off Guadalupe Island a few years ago and it seems the sharks there are hunting when the seals are moving and "sleeping" when the seals aren't moving which is at night. Do think perhaps these adolescent sharks off of the CA coast are "sleeping or sleepy" during the daytime and hunting the rays and other small sand sharks at night since we seem to never see them feed in the daytime? Their movements seem so lazy during the daylight hours when these videos are taken. I'm just trying to understand what is actually going on here.

      They use these areas as their nursery and I think this is where they are learning to be sharks. I think for them hunting has not become so easy and I'm sure they attempt to hunt rays and miss a whole lot. They have not become the super predator yet.
