  • Failing stucco finishes, how to repair, before and after.
How to repair failed stucco finishes.
Folks, we are located in Oakland, CA.
FYI, folks, here are all the basic tools we use and recommend on Amazon's website.

Live long and plaster hats, shirts, and other cool stuff. www.livelongandplaster.com/

Howdy, all this is master plastering as it needs many things.
One, the failing texture had to be removed.
Two, all the new patchwork had to be stuccoed with accelerated stucco.
All the removed stucco-heavy textures had to be reapplied to match the correct depth.
Fourth, a new finish had to be applied over the entire walls to blend in the color and texture.
Note this complete scraping off and applying a new finish video repair was done in a day.
One must know what they are doing to complete all these steps with accelerated stuccos.
In almost all of our videos, I say that many can do it themselves.
However, for this repair, I suggest you hire a company with advanced knowledge to know the order in which to correct the mess we found.
In this video, I explain why adding the liquid bonding agents into the mixing stucco is never a good idea. Instead, use a paintbrush or roller and apply the bonding agents directly to the walls after they are pressure washed.
You can apply either Quikrete bonding agent sold at all hardware stores, or Weld-Crete, usually sold at plastering yards by Larsons.
Folks, you can depend on us for sound advice throughout our videos.

I have watched at least 20 of your videos. Haven’t done an ounce of plastering. I might someday. My house needs some small stucco repairs so we can paint the whole thing a new color. I learn so much from watching them, including how much the years of hands-on experience play a role in the final product. So I still don’t know if I’ll end up hiring someone. At least I’ll know what the guy is talking about. Your videos are just part of my life now. I love them! Thank you for sharing your beautiful work!

Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. Agreed fully. I failed to mention the reason for the ban is that too many people thought they could do it and didnt do it well. So inevitably in the moist climate it would end up with alot of bad guys behind the stucco. Haha. You know what youre doing though. So your jobs inevitably wouldn't have this problem. Thanks alot for responding!

How about adding bonding agent to the mix AND applying it to the wall? That way you get flexibility in the stucco (which seems good) but hopefully it doesn't peel off....

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Evening Metal dude, by adding the bonder in the stucco, it dilutes it it to uselessness, over the last 30 plus years this is the most common failure of Plastering renders failing.
      Don't do it.
I realise theoretically it seems a sound idea, but it has never worked, when folks call me and say they hired a person now less than a year later it's all peeling off, this is the main reason, besides a dirty or dusty wall, nothing adheres to dust either.
      Cheers,

Hi Kirk. We recently (3 months ago) had a Smooth SB finish applied over our existing rough stucco (painted). They pressure washed and used a Polymer-modified base coat and anti-fracture
membrane for smooth-troweled finishes (basex). They charged about $4k (West Mission Plastering in Santa Barbara, CA). Here is my problem though - about a month ago, I added PVC trim to our outside windows and used a construction glue to attach the trim (I didn't want to punch holes in the wall and risk water damage, so I chose glue over screws). Yesterday, I noticed that 2 of the window trims had pulled the stucco off the wall and basically destroyed the entire section around the window (about a 3 inch section all the way around the window). I asked West Mission Plastering why the stucco peeled off so easy (keep in mind, PVC trim does not shrink, twist, etc. - so there was very little pressure being exerted on that stucco). When I take a piece of the fallen off stucco, it crumbles very easy and is only about 1/8inch thick. West Mission Plastering had the following to say : "First of all, my stucco coating is not peeling off (it's been pulled out). I don't know the type of glue you used which is creating such damage. I can help only if my stucco coating is peeling of the wall by itself within 1 year of my completion date".
    So my questions are:
1): Should the SB Smooth stucco finish be stronger than this, or did I mess up by using glue to attach the trim?
2): Is your typical warranty similar to what West Mission Plastering has stated above (1 year, and only if the stucco peels off on its own)?
3): What is the best way to fix it?
Thanks Kirk. I've been watching your channel for about 12 months and have learned much!

Evening Joel, this was repaired 7 years ago. This is stucco similar to concrete, not vinyl or tin siding.
Unless someone hit it with a lawnmower, or garbage bin, or household appliances.😉
Nothing adverse happens to stucco walls. Stucco walls don't decay or rot unless the roof or walls leak, nor do they fail unless the person who applied the stucco only had an idea of what they were doing.
As a rule, to learn to apply every type of stucco takes roughly 10 years to be well rounded. It takes about 15 years to understand all the materials and what they can and can't do.
I have 900 videos and 50 million views. I challenge anyone to find a video where we did anything not up or beyond code. The fact is we're on the ball, so much. We are transparent and video even the most complex stucco that can be applied for the world to view.
Plus, one would have to be a moral person who understands any repair that fails. We would have to go back and correct at no coat. If one does this at least three times in 25 years, thats normal. 5 times, the contractor is not sharp.🤔

hey Kirk, do you ever build or fix concrete window sills? Would love to see a video of how you do it if you ever do that kind of thing. I'm talking about window sills like this one - www.tullyleek.co.uk/images/postcard/large/window-sills-04.jpg

Hi Kirk, srry in advance for the long descriptive question. I have a house that is done entirely in white color coat with a smooth wall finish. The area in question is 8h x10w square seam. This seam was created by enclosing an upstairs out door patio. The guys who did stucco used a white color coat that matches existing house perfectly and the new stucco looks great but the entire square of seam from new to old is visible. Is this just the way it is or did they pressed too hard on the float at seam making it low? Is this fixable with bonding agent then reapplying and floating more color coat over just the seams to a feathered zero outside the seams or would you have to chip out the seams a 1/4" or does the entire wall need to be smooth coated corner to corner? I can email a picture of it so u can see it if helpful. I emailed you a few years back and u helped me out with my first large stucco repair that came out great thanks to you. For some reason I don't have your email anymore.
    Thanks alot?
