Did you know the new #CLE is the only Cabriolet now available in the #MercedesBenz line up? Not only does it have to succeed three loved cars in the #mercedes C Class, E Class, and S Class cabriolets - But it also has to succeed one of the biggest back catalogs of successful and desirable cabriolets in car history, with Mercedes always catering for this market in a big way. Cars like the original SL Roadster, Pagodas, and then a long line of CLK or E Cabrios only cemented this.
So, lots of heritage and big shoes to fill. And these were shoes that always focused on head turning design, high luxury and emotion.
And as we covered the last few times on CLE, the Cabrio also takes the majority of its design modus operandi from the New C Class. That’s especially with regard to the interior which is copy paste C Class. And some bits from E Class, like larger dimensions, internal space and parts of the exterior design that are more like E. OH, and the privilege of having a 6 cylinder engine!
The idea is to give C Class customers more practicality, tech and luxury - while providing E Class drivers with the sportiness they’ve missed out on. Today we’re going to take the CLE 450 on a first drive, it’s a 6 cylinder petrol all-wheel drive range topper, and we will see: just how does the new CLE Cabriolet stack up?
As for the technical bits, like C and E every variant is at minimum a mild hybrid with ISG assisted power boost, and this is the range topping 6 Cylinder engine with 381HP. It’s an engine I thought was really exciting in the Coupe, so I hope some of that translates into the Cabriolet today too.
Other engines available are 4 cylinder mild hybrids, with the CLE 200, 220d starting at 53K in the UK (204HP, 197HP, 7.9 secs) and CLE 300 (258hp 6.6), our range topper 450 6 cyl is 380HP and 70k…
The roof retains the traditional Mercedes Benz soft top approach like the cars of old. This one is a multi later concept, with high sound deadening and thermal insulation - it can open in 20 seconds and up to speeds of 60kmh!
The Interior is totally C Class. So it’s definitely more driver focused with the centre screen pointing to the driver. This also allows it the front tilting screen as seen in the Mercedes AMG SL, which as you’ll see really helps with touch screens in the sun. Space inside and the boot is the same as the E was. And we get nappa leather being standard and standard Air Scarf and Air Cap too! Something we will test with my hair, haha!
So! Can this, the only Mercedes Benz Cabriolet, do the job of both previous cars? Let’s find out today!

Neighbor retired. pull up yesterday in same blue spec.
I don’t get warm with this car, same as with the coupe. It’s appearance and rank is perceived clearly below E class, but the price is up there if not even more. Having owned E Cabrio/Coupe, it always felt more upper class for paying more than for a C class. Here I think it just feels like a C.
Only the 53 I find well positioned with the wide body etc, very sporty
As a E Coupe owner I 100% agree
He have a lot of wrong informations, this car isn't replacing the E class cabrio, the interior isn't as large as in the E-class cabrio (rear seat in this one aren't in the same level of a 4 BMW cabrio who have smaller rear seats than the E class cabrio)
Mercedes says that this one is a replacement of both the E and the C, but they never said that it was comparable to the E!!!!
@@Maximius38 I get your point, but in terms of size (vehicle length) it is even bigger than E, and its prices are higher than E used to be. Therefore the spot it supposedly fills is more E than C, and it’s doesn’t do it that well
Just bring back the S class coupe pls.
Would be nice but never happen
That's brilliant: I can't think of a better advocate for this car than Dickhammerbush (seriously, not being a smart ass). I have the AMG S63 Cabrio, which is a sexy, inviting thing (bush), while the 5.5L AMG motor is the dickhammer when you want it to be. And I guess, to @jays9211's comment, Merc will never bring it back because of environmental regs and low demand. Is that the best explanation?
Mercedes didn’t sell enough S Class Coupe and Cabriolet models to continue making them.
@@eastbaystreet1242 Hahaha thank you for making my day better!
s class coupe is brillant, but i dont need another car that only 1% can afford
When will be the CLE 53 drive released?
29th
Just discovered your channel. Great review. Thanks.
This looks much better than the coupe.
They should've just brought back the "CE" nameplate. I.e. CE450. Leave the 3 Letter designations to the 4dr coupe/ sedans & all their SUVs save the G Wagon.
the Kruger flap type above the front glass make total sense, I had it in my old E class cabriolet
Great great review...!!! Hay, why would you blur the cluster?
As a former and current owner of few EClass vehicles, I feel this is a down grade and a price increase for a lesser car, but I'll wait until I drive one to make any more comments on it.
Certainly a downgrade, this is a C cabriolet and the knee room is tight and much lesser than the outgoing E cabriolet, I guess 2018 E cabriolet looks the best
A former c and e class coupe owner, i just got my cle last month and i can confirm that it is not a downgrade at all
@amroelnour I owned a 2013 E550 Coupe and currently own a 2020 E450 Convertible, and perhaps my next car will be the CLE, I gotta drive it before I make the decision to swith. I typically buy cars used with very low miles or lease larger vehicles if I can write them off as a business expense, I wonder what an AMG version of this car will look and sound like.
@@Paul-tw3yi im sure you’re going to love it, I wasn’t sure as well when i watched the reviews until i saw it in person. Its absolutely gorgeous and modern 🔥
I respectfully disagree. In my option this is the nicest convertible they've made in a really long time. I been waiting and waiting to get a new car, and this and the Chevy Stingray are the first ones that really caught my eye.
Now if they would just release it already. 😤 Thank you for the video. I said the same when you dropped the first CLE convertible review on the one in matte black.
The second most beautiful car after the SL
Looks amazing 😍😍
clA Frontlights
glC Backlights
C Interiour
its more a combo of A & C then C & E
Its also ridicilous to call it a CLE when the CLA & CLS is a 4 door Coupe
CE450 might be more appropriate
The CLS is soon to be discontinued sadly
The size and Engine is E class
@@MrEmy85 first of all… they told everyone that the difference between the c and the e will be 4 and 6 cylinder.. now the cl“E“ 63 gets a 4 cylinder.. i had the e coupe and you if you sit in the cle you will see that it doesn‘t have the same space as a e class.. maybe from outside its the same, but inside its a c class
@@patrikpervorfi I think you are a bit confused. There is no CLE63 yet and the engine is inline 6, just like the old E53. I didn't go and sit it one but looks very similar to the old E53 size wise.
@@MrEmy85 no you are confused.. you can look it up.. they had plans to do a 63 with a 4 cylinder, but after the salss plumed of the c63 sedan, they are reconsidering it and rumors are saying they are bringing a V8
They took inspiration from the BMW 8 series to design the front lights.
The roof looks a little misplaced, maybe with a dark blue colour option..
It's beautiful, but a true mix of E and C would have had the E interior. Or something closer to the SL's interior. The old CLK did this better.
Do the SL is not a cabriolet?
isn't
Roadster
SL is a Mercedes cabriolet you can buy today?
Unless you deem AMG as not Mercedes.
we also sell the SL!! :)
I have a 2018 E-Class Cabriolet (and had the previous gen from 2014 before that) and I still get passers by (or even other road users) that approach me just to tell me how good it looks. 7:42 My 2018 generation already has the electric load cover. Plus my generation has physical buttons and switches on the dash and steering wheel meaning I don't have to look down and faff around on a screen for something simple like changing the climate control. I think I will stick with what I have currently or for the first time in my life look at another manufacturer's offering as I cannot justify a starting price of £70,000 for this.
I got the 2021 e class Cabriolet and I can confirm the steering wheel is awful looks nice but the buttons are terrible to use and the fingerprints are just ridiculous
Shoes are not filled, sadly
Isnt SL also tehnically a cabriolet?
Made solely by Mercedes AMG, it’s not a “Benz” product, so no normal version. It’s also considered a roadster.
@@RemoveBeforeRace ohhhh, okay I guess by that definition youre are correct.
It's not the only cabriolet
There's the sl as well !
It is a Mercedes !
SL is an AMG. Also, the SL is a roadster, not a cabriolet. 😉
There's a difference between a cabrioet and a roadster
The outgoing E cabrio was the pinnacle. This new one looks like it’s two generations behind
Agree big downgrade InStyle
The cheap display screens are low rent. I wish they had the R&D budget for a custom binnacle.
Crazy they have done away with C and E. So many buyers that want a Merc soft top that wont be able to go to a car of this price
Mercedes CLE Cabriolet is just sensational.
Brutally overpriced, watch them get 40% discounts in a few years
Few days. Youll be able to get this at a huge discount dealer supplied brand new
Curious, what makes you think that?
@@DaCake2 current uk car market its struggling right now all the dealers have huge discounts on new cars out the gate. Especially these heavy depreciation prone mercedes models. Thia cle450 fits straight into it. Hard to shift so discounts
@@cephasmakuzva Interesting. I’m in the US and I’ve been waiting for the convertible to get released. Time seems to be going really slow lol. In your opinion, how long after its release would the price drop, or do you think it will be different here since our car market is pretty strong right now? Dealers can’t keep used or new cars in stock right now. It’s really weird. Not sure if it’s because of factory shortages or consumer demand.
@@DaCake2 Local MB dealer has (1) coming will arrive late May / early June. Followed by (4) more a few weeks later. I'm anxious to see it.
Dude, I have to say, this is nothing more than a 2-door convertible version of the current C-Class. Straight up, the only reason Merc has decided to call it a CLE is to justify why they are going to charge an E-Class price.
I think this car was always destined to be a C-Class and they were going to discontinue the E-Class for cost savings and emissions compliance, and the whole scheme to sell it as a E-Class replacement and sell it for more was dreamt up by some marketing dude/gal who probably got a bonus/promotion.
I hope they languish on the shelf, forcing Mercedes to realize that enthusiasts who are looking for a car like this have not been fooled.
Don't let Mercedes take you for fools people. Wait until the inevitable discounts before buying.
Very nice but im looking forward to the CLE53 Cabriolet!
This car with a normally aspirated nice sounding 350-400 hp V8 would be magical. Otherwise, not my cup of tea.
Would be awesome, but the 🤓 environmental rules stop that ):
I’d have a C or E Cab over this cle any day. I have the c cab and it’s one of the best looking convertibles ever made. Like all new Mercedes design language now, it’s just not pretty in my opinion anymore
Overpriced just wait 2 years for 50 percent discount. Great review do 👍
I don’t think I would ever want this style of car…who wants to drive around with four people being wind blown and sunburnt whilst not being exciting. It is a good car but used, it will soon be a cheap car for old men. Far better to go for the SL55 to combine performance, comfort and sound in an open top package…but not the SL43 which sounds like a C180 Spirit to those who can remember that far back..alright but it makes a Corolla sound interesting. 😬😬🧐🙂
CLE450 has a v6 and C63 amg 4 cylinder I don’t understand mercedes !😂
partner with britosh and indian magazines for more viewers
Thanks for the vid as always, great content. My kids and I watch youtube car shows and this one came up. They noticed what is incredibly obvious. You are too kind to Mercedes sometimes. That forehead extension this car has is stupid, and in anywhere hot will be filled with bugs on its first use, and looks ridiculous. The price here is astronomical, and its copy paste from other models. Why dont you call out the brand when they flop? I dig your content, but sometimes its like, “come on brah..”
Not quite a Bentley GTC
many wrong informations in this video bro!!!!
The rear lights on new mercs are gross! Such a bar of soap
Nah. I like the rounded rears
Same. @@MaticTheProto
Agree they look like Chinese knock-off
Nope. Love my AMG, love my 911 cab but never the Twain shall meet.
over 100k for a non amg coupé that looks like a big CLA... i really hope that mercedes is waking up someday, their new philosophy is just mindblowing... quality goes down year by year but the cars are getting more expansive...
this car is just a big fail, way to expansive for what it offers... if i had the money i would for sure not spend it for the CLE..
its a really sad time for car enthusiasts these days... market is full of boring and ugly looking e-cars and there is literally no way anymore to get a nice car for "normal" money...
It's not 100k.
@@DaCake2 here in germany it is..
This looks so much like my old C43, that is not worth trading up to a CLE. The back seat is still not practical. I am buying a 2023 E450 convertible instead. CLE is a total failure in my eyes.
😂
Agree. I hate that they made it a 4 seater. They serve zero purpose. Disagree that it's a total failure though. I personally love it and think it's the best convertible they put out in a while. Different tastes though.
This model will be such a fail, looks like a game simulator inside definitely not like luxury horrible air vents, horrible presenter you can play his description of the car to fall asleep, the guy is like 4 foot 2 why would you need any air scarf ,he could probably sit at the back and say that's really spacious lol
2015 was the dead line of cars in general. There are not anymore good cars.
Overpriced and overweight, like every single new Mercedes released.
Agreed
You just can’t afford one 😂
Overpriced, not sure because all manufacturers are increasing their price. Overweight, definitely agree. All new Mercedes and AMGs are too heavy. They should understand how light weight is important for performance and environment.
Spot on !…also a brothel rather than a car interior
@@Gigithinker2 miss the days of designo pure leather and luxury
Mercedes has entirely lost the plot.
Is the SL not a Cabriolet?
SL is an AMG, not a Mercedes Benz.
@@makanimike it’s a Mercedes - AMG
@@JohnnyTravel68 No. SL is an AMG. Also, the SL is a ROADSTER. 😉
