Hey just wanted to give a few words about the video. Obviously I get into some pretty nasty stuff here. Toxicity isn't something I generally like to hang around because it usually just breeds and festers even more toxicity. That being said, I have about 300ish videos(at least) about classic so far, most of them sharing what I like about the game and what it does well. Over the past year some of these things were reinforced, and others....not so much. The community in particular, while it can be great, can also be REALLY bad - it's something I've been wanting to talk about for a while but took me about 10 months to be able to put it together in a way I wanted to. My past 3 months ranking also really opened up my eyes to how bad it can really get. I'm pretty proud of the channel overall not only for the (generally) positive community who follows it, but also because I share honestly what I think are the game's highlights and lowlights, and I'd be remiss if I only talk about the good and ignore the bad.
All that being said, as I said in the video I made lots of great friends in the game. I still think the community is one of its best aspects - but it's just like real life. For every great person you meet, there are many more you want nothing to do with - it's just amplified 10x due to the anonymity of it all. I tried to make the video mostly constructive, but also a bit entertaining(hopefully) so if nothing else you can walk away with a few laughs at the craziness that can go on.
That's about it - just wanted to include this little write-up since it's probably the most spicy video I've ever posted on here(or maybe it was my "Most Disappointing Moments" video? idk). Hope you enjoy regardless.

I don't agree with your statement on bracket breakers and ninja looters.
      1) Bracket Breakers. There are 2 aspects to this. 1, is that in my experience, the pvp stacking systems that servers create are inherently fair, because all it takes is 1 person to break brackets for the whole system to collapse. Therefore, the breakers usually have some kind of agenda or motive or even just plain paranoia which I believe justifies actions. 2, that is getting to rank 14 is a huge time investment for many people especially in more highly populated servers. If you spend 14 hours a day ranking, only to find out that it has to be extended by 2 weeks because someone broke, it's entirely understandable if you freak out IMO. Not to the extent of doxxing someone, but everything in game is IMO fair play.
      2) Ninja looters. Similar to the above, the looting system in classic is fair. If you can't be trusted to play fair, then yes, why shouldn't people announce that you're an asshole?
All in all, I don't think the "its just a game bro" argument cuts it. How much time, energy and emotion you invest into an activity plays a part on how mad you will get if things go wrong, and plenty of people freak out over other real life activities too like sports. That doesn't justify RL actions like doxxing, yes, but anything in game is fair play to me. If you're an asshole in game, then you deserve to be shunned like one, like in real life.

I mean that's the sad reality, anyone who has ran a guild that has gotten into tough times (or just ever-looming decline) will know that intimately. You gotta make things work or they'll just fall apart, even if it means making hard calls.
Anyway, can't really tell much about your case, it seems the GM has gone too far but in my experience these situations are just the final straw, the devil is in the details and the attitude and usually these feelings build up over a long time. Most problematic people don't see themselves as a (big) problem since in their mind their aproach is the ideal one.

Back before I had my own credit card and my parents didnt want to use theirs for my sub, I needed to use prepaids. I was told that playing games and buying a sub was a waste of money. Even for a kid that didnt do drugs, smoke, or party, but I didn't care. So whenever I'd go out on my bike/parent's car for a "trip to the mall", I'd go to the bank, then game stop, get a prepaid card with the cash, then go to the place I said I'd go. Give it an hour, come back, put the code in, and play. I knew tossing the cards in the trash that they would eventually notice, so I used one of those metal containers that looks like a book and stuffed the cards inside. I did this for years for multiple games (WoW, Runescape, Wizard101) and I still have the damn cards.

I paid for my addiction by using FAFSA money that I got for going to the local community college and also from selling textbooks back to the student store when I didn't need them anymore. One time I was like a dollar short for a game card at the mall. I solicited some random middle-aged guy for a buck and he seemed really suspicious about why I wanted it. I said that I needed to make a phone call... in 2008 or 2009, maybe. He kind of reluctantly parted with his dollar and I went off somewhere to disappear for a bit before buying a game card at Game Stop. I was scared he might see me!

World buff meta is literally the stupidest shit ever. Spend hours collecting all the various buffs and not being able to log onto the character to save them for the raid purely to clear it 20 minutes faster than you would with no world buffs. Makes absolutely zero sense and people get so spergy about it. You spend less time on the raid if you JUST RAID. All those hours spent collecting buffs is literally counter productive. YES the raid time will be faster, but overall you've spend hours of extra time just to brag about your clear time on reddit.

I didn't play Classic when it came out, I played BC. I remember in my guild and community raiding and all that was secondary to just hanging out, doing fun stuff together in the world for no benefit but fun. I was excited to relive that when Classic came out but all I found were gate keeping min-maxing try hards. I got really sick of how awful the community was and how it felt more like I was playing keep up with everyone else or be shunned rather than just enjoying playing with one another.
It put me off Classic entirely and I don't think I'll be coming back to it. I'll try BC when it comes out because that was peak for me, but my excitement is more worry now for what trying to relive my old experience will actually feel like.

    • @Zeldarulah
      @Zeldarulah 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

It goes both ways. I'm on a pretty sweaty server but a pretty dad guild (though some would consider my guild still fairly sweaty--two scarab lords, two raid groups, killed C'Thun week 1, but by my server's standards we're definitely on the more casual side), and we don't require world buffs but I always get them because I think it makes this trivial content more fun to have the fear of dying and to just get to delete shit and see big numbers... but then on the flip side I have a guildmate who for some reason is very upset about people getting them and really is annoyed that we 'allow' people to get them. Then most of the sweaty guilds on my server will do cringey stuff like link people's parses to make fun of them. In my opinion, the game is inherently casual so you should just play it the way you want, but if you're trying to insult or mock or just be a degenerate about the way other people play the game it's really asinine and cringey.

It really is funny how classic has been proven time and time again to be a pretty easy experience and, yet, the level of “required” optimization is off the charts. Classic is already a pretty major time sink as compared to retail (not that retail is a problem-free product, it isn’t) ... chasing world buffs we don’t need on top of other things we could be doing is just goofy imo.

In guild chat last week, a guy who didn't have a 60 in the guild got into an argument with the raid leader about whether or not to use dynamite on Viscidius. He argued that casting dynamite cost .3 more seconds than using a GCD and that if everyone would just attack or use a spell that it would be more optimal. But he wouldn't let it go. A guy not even involved in the raid was unwilling to tolerate anyone in his periphery not playing in what he believed to be the optimal way. That kind of attitude is exactly why Classic is so toxic: people believe that the optimal way to play the game is the ONLY way to play the game.

Sounds like you guys require dynamite and he was explaining the futility of it, it also sounds like you didn't do the math at all and just continued to do it your way without looking at the math or testing it yourself (would have cost you 1 pull tops) If you demand your raiders use dynamite and someone told you there's a better way that costs nothing and doesn't require an entire profession. I can see how, if these things are true, the guy would have been upset. Not at you refusing to change your play style, but rather for your attitude about people needing to do it specifically your way, weather your way is wrong or not.
My point is you sap the fun out of it as much as anyone by requiring dynamite and not entertaining the discussion that could result in you not doing it your way. It genuinely makes it sound like the dynamite is about you not wanting to hurt your ego.

Damn that's pretty crazy. I have to admit that I didn't expect the level of min maxing being so insane when the content was so easy. AOTC Jaina was rougher than anything I experienced in Classic. I actually found the most difficult parts of raiding not being....raiding, but preparing for raiding. The community aspect of it is the only enjoyable experience that I took away from it. It's a shame that retail will never have that part back.

    Story time!
When I started playing WoW in TBC I leveled mostly solo until I met an undead Warrior named Grim who was leveling in Hellfire. We instantly became friends and he asked me if I wanted to join this guild he was a part of called The Broken. Real life was not going well at that point in time for me so I decided what the hell why not. To this day I do not regret that decision. I found a family in that guild that I have never experienced online since. Eli and her Husband ran the guild. They had children in RL but to me it seemed like they genuinely cared for everyone like we were part of their family as well. I became friends with a druid name Dia and bonded with many others. None of us really knew anything but we enjoyed questing and leveling and helping one another out. I was one of the first to hit 70 in that guild and many would soon follow me. Everyone worked together to get everyone to 70 so we could all be 70 together. I got the feeling that, while no one really talked about it, some of us were playing WoW as a way to dodge things in real life that we didn't want to deal with or were not happy with. WoW was our escape and the guild was a social environment we could all lean on.
About 4 months later we had enough people at level 70 to step into raiding and a Hunter in the guild named Max was very keen to attempt Kara. So everyone discussed it and decided we would give it a try for Max and to see what it was like. Our first raid night came and went and all we succeeded at doing was clearing trash to Maiden and wiping on her quite a bit. I think that night it was made apparent to Max that our guild was not destined to be a raid clearing one. We were not raid clearing god gamers. A lot of us were not good at WoW or games in general. We were just a handful of nerds who bonded by having fun experiencing and screwing around in a fantasy video game online together. I'm not really sure why but if I had to guess a raid night was never setup again because of our poor performance and because most of us didn't have any interest in doing it ever again.
A few months later Eli and her Husband announced to the guild that they were going to stop playing WoW. They had children to raise and couldn't justify spending the time or money they had on the game anymore. We all understood but it was still sad to see them go. A few days before they were to stop playing I remember a guild meeting was held between all the officers to decide who would take over leadership. I was not an officer so I did not attend it. I logged on after the meeting had been held and was standing in Org when Dia immediately invited me to a group and him and a few others who I was close with in the guild rushed to me. A decision had been made and some core members had chimed in and it was decided that I should take over as the GM if I wanted to otherwise Max would become our leader. This was a huge shock to me and I was deeply humbled by it. I was very young though and I did not want the responsibility of this role in the guild at the time as I was running from responsibilities in real life. I did not feel prepared for it and ultimately in the end I turned it down.
You see I dont think I fully realized it at the time but Max and I represented two different futures for the guild. Max had continued to advocate for progression and raiding after our failed Kara run. He had plans to recruit more people who could play better and progress while most of us wanted nothing to do with progression. All we wanted was a chill place to hangout, have fun and help one another. This chill environment is what I represented. From day one I had helped with every group quest and dungeon that people in guild had asked for help with. I enjoyed helping guild mates with stuff and I enjoyed spending time talking to them.
After Max assumed lead and Eli and her husband stopped playing it didnt take long for the guild to start under going changes. No one was forced to raid but Max recruited other people who did want to and it became clear that The Broken was no longer a place to just chill and hang out. Most of our core members left the guild within a month, myself included. The Broken we knew was no more. I dont blame Max for this and I still think the decision I made was the right one at the time. I do sometimes wonder about what could have been if I had decided to accept leadership for the guild though. One thing I never understood though was why Max decided that remaking The Broken from within was a better idea then just starting his own guild. It was clear that most of us were happy just having fun doing whatever we wanted. He was a minority to the point that only him and one maybe two others in our original guild wanted to raid and progress and yet he still chose to use The Broken as his raiding guild. One thing I know for sure though is that to this day I have yet to find that same sense of community on the scale that The Broken had under Eli and her husbands leadership. I played WoW for a few years after that but mostly found myself playing only with Dia or by myself as friends who left The Broken slowly began to leave the game. Dia found a new guild in Wrath and I eventually joined it and we made some new friends but ultimately it fell apart and not long after I wound up leaving WoW behind before Cata launched.
I'm not really sure if there is a point or lesson to be learned from this story but this video stirred my memory of it up for some reason and I felt the need to share.
If anything maybe it highlights the fact that not everyone plays games for the same reasons and our actions in online communities might impact others we know nothing about in ways we can't even begin to comprehend. I think the gaming community as a whole from low to high skill levels and across every genre of game can do a lot better at respecting others in the communities we play in and trying to think about how we are interacting with others online from other peoples perspectives.

The main problem, imo, is that vanilla wow hit during a time when information was still scarcely shared through the internet. Few people knew about Thotbot for instance. If they released a "new" first expandion, aka tbc replacement ontop of vanilla, did not include any data registration of it prior to release, and kept it a secret, finally fillled the content with tons of secrets that dont appear in data mining, we would experience how the content would feel when it is unknown to everyone. This is imo the essence of vanilla wow; information came through word of mouth, and the world itself felt dangerous and unexplored to most people :-)

Reminds me of one of the main reasons I quit before the Panda's got introduced. Started feeling too much like a job. I did jump back on for classic, but I guess I filtered out the bad stuff because while I enjoyed leveling like I remembered the end game wasnt nearly as much fun as I thought it would be or remembered it to be.. Like losing every AV for an entire day because the server is so imbalanced, the hours spent prepping for a raid, the infighting. So I quit again, only to decide to start up a subscription for the long weekend. Picked the lowest pop server and rolled a new character. And I'm enjoying the heck out of it. Sure zones are ghost towns, but as more of a solo gamer I'm enjoying the exploring, atmosphere, quest lines and complete lack of pressure to "be the best" or rush to any accomplishment. And I get it, that isnt for everyone. But isnt that the point of playing a game? To enjoy yourself? Ah well, it's easy to see how people can get a little too invested in the game.

This is why mainstream popular games like league and wow will always have the worst, disgustingly low iq people you can find. Unironically. I think I still keep some SoD chat logs from 6 months ago, some random mage malding that I fairly won the Feline Mantle as the group Priest, which gives 10 intelligence and 3 spirit. To the mage, that was completely unacceptable, as the item clearly was designed for dps casters, and not healers, because the shoulders have way more intellect than spirit. I calmly tell him it's literally phase 1, the shoulders are literally on my pre-BFD bis list and I've been standing here for an entire day farming it just like every other caster that did. Actually it was my 3rd consecutive day of running SFK because nothing I needed dropped, and I needed like 3-4 items from that dungeon, but that's besides the point.
He went on a tantrum spiral about how I was manipulating the whole thing with false bis lists, how he has been playing wow for years and he KNOWS spirit is for healers and intellect is for dps casters (completely untrue, healers use intellect a lot, especially in classic where mana pools are small), and how I was a filthy newbie casual to wow not knowing how the stats work and how I should've just "played retail as my first wow experience, it's made for brainless kids like you anyway". I was just curious how would a noob know to manipulate people with false bis lists when they would have no clue what a BiS list even is, or what items to put in there? Oh, the mage was also the worst DPS we had in the group by far, we just tolerated them up to that point where he just sat in the corner like a child, sulking about losing the roll and how the whole party was scamming him. Threatening to report everyone and write our names in the server discord. I don't think he ever did, must've felt huge shame after he left.

In other words, what many(not all) people missed about Vanilla was how you could be a gatekeeping elitist special snowflake. Not through any kind of mechanical awareness or skill like a current raider, but by simply grinding a lot and knowing how to search Thottbot. I've encountered people who hate casuals so much that they unironically idolized the nolifer existence and wish the game was inaccessible to anyone who couldn't dedicate all their time to it. The people who think time spent=skill and that anyone who doesn't play the game the nolifer way doesn't "deserve" anything.

Instant lvl 70, no LFR but everything is scaled to be 5 man content, so you don't have to pug 24 people and hope 15 of them will click on Magtheridon, or dedicate yourself die hard to some raiding guild. You also gear up faster because there is less people to roll with. It does take away some of the pride you had in each consecutive tier of gear, but at the same time more people are getting to experience all of the content, you got time to experience more than one class, and you can do it all on your schedule, like a real game is supposed to be played.

Some part of it is a consequence of what this video showed. Douchebags take advantage of friendlier people, to vent out, ninja loot them, steal their gathering nodes after killing mobs, and more. We have lost social aspects because there are too many anti-social players.

See I disagree, there’s always been arrogant & toxic players like that (from what I remember in my runescape days and Gaia in like 2010) I personally think it’s streamers and overly competitive youtubers fault, people watch those videos and think “okay that’s how a game should be played” especially the way streamers tend to flex their stats so people kinda idolise them in that way thus completely cutting out the aspect of communicating with other players :/ so essentially MMO’s overtime have become a “single player” open world game

Kill but as lower rated you can't trash talk anyone and get away. That's why Vanilla PvP sucks no rating. I'm sure there's a tiny tiny amount of people who do, but I think it's fair to point out how massively flawed a game is when a key component of it is.... No playing? And any defense of it basically amounts to stubbornness more than anything.
And it's a bit of a disingenuous comparison saying in retail you just "maybe need some flasks or potions". If we're talking actual min-maxing, the sheer grind for min-maxing azerite armor traits alone, each patch, is quite excessive as well. Well I'll add my story for all to see. I first started playing right when WotLk was in beta. I picked a Troll Warrior and had fun for quite awhile. I still remember loving that I had a kendo sword I found as a rare drop. I stopped playing though after my first dungeon. I rolled as a Tank and got insulted and kicked on the first boss. It turned me off from the game so bad that I just didn't want to play. I tried again during Cata because Blizzard sent me an email offering a month free and WotLK expansion for free. I tried it out again and this time played a Troll Druid. I played the entire game avoiding dungeons because of my experience. I did do some PVP and that was fun. I tried dungeons again because of the positive experience. I got insulted and kicked out because i had PVP gear. Haven't played since then. I'm too casual for rank PVP and unrank was getting boring. Dungeons proved to be too toxic and the guild I was apart of was having a power struggle so only people who picked a side played together.

It happens a lot, just a few hours earlier I did a raid in lfr (looking for raid) as a healer. They had a few attempts already, and when we tried the boss after I joined we died pretty early because of people being unaware of the mechanics. As I died early I got blamed for it, getting ganged up on for joining as healer but "going afk"
In those cases it's really tempting to leave, but I stuck with it knowing I did nothing wrong (and luckly not getting vote kicked). When we finished after some more people left and got replaced, I was second on healing.

I came here after a guy called me a "fucking dumbass" for refusing to use addons, most notably Questie.

  • @jorymayer707
    @jorymayer707 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

The streamers provoked that response though. That was in retaliation to Asmongold having a breakdown on video and threatening to lock the server down for the enemy faction. He essentially promised to abuse his streamer privilege to make life as hard as possible for the enemy faction. Many many streamers had incredibly toxic views about coming in to servers specifically to ruin them, so, a guy made a post asking the streamers to please think of the game and don't do that because it just causes bad blood and we all end up in a grief war.
The streamers responded to this with maximum toxicity, they doubled down. they started talking among themselves, on stream, like they were gloating about it or something, about how they're gonna band together and take over the server to grief the enemy faction.
So this guy made the addon. Queue the Pikachu faces all around. This is why people can't see streamers as anything but entitled babies. I say they made their own beds, honestly.

Lol I'm actually amazed people take what streamers say so literally, as if everything the streamer says isn't ironic, jokingly, or doing it for content. Also, who was the army of streamers plotting to come to servers specifically to ruin them, and did they follow through and succeed? If you're referring to Herod, the anti-streamer (Reddit) server, yeah they invaded it for a few hours mostly to get a reaction from the people who are so anti-streamers for content. I'm not really trying to defend them but I think it's unfair to defend people overreacting.
Classic WoW's communities are WAY more toxic than any of the streamers.

True, my problem though is that it was directed to all streamers - even those not involved with any of that stuff. The classic wow subreddit as a whole became really toxic to streamers in general, regardless of how they played etc... just seemed really toxic and petty all-around(especially considering that the plan was that ANYONE who didn't download the addon would also be added...)

It's even worse now in Wrath thanks to a magic word called gearscore.
Gearscore too low? Hope you didn't plan on playing the game. I've spent the entire duration of phase 1 running heroics to get my gs up and somehow despite every slot being 200 item level, it's still too low for phase 1 content.
And that's only the beginning. Not using the right spec? You aren't playing the game either. You enjoy your own custom made spec better than copy-pasting it from wowhead? You're not having fun the right way.
Don't have the right addons? Well. that's even worse. I've been sent death threats. suicide hotline numbers and constant harassment in and out of game on platforms like discord and reddit where people already know which character I play on.
Everytime I try to join a raid, I get so nervous that they'll find out I'm "not playing the right way" that it feels like my heart is about to jump out of my throat.
It just isn't fun. I loved this game when I was a kid but as an adult, it feels like a second job that I'm constantly about to get fired from.

man I hear the point about the buff meta in the pve community, it's one of the reasons I quit. My guild used to be sorta chill and the few overzealous people that cared a lot were sort of a running joke but after some time it stopped being fun to poke at and people started to get more invested in checking if everyone had consumables and asked for everyone to get the buffs. It got on my nerves and seeing as it kept increasing I dipped out before AQ started, I don't even want to know how people will get when naxx is finally out. Raiding hasn't been a serious challenge, speedrunning the raid has sorta replaced it and that's just not fun for me. I like to hang around for two to three hours and be chill about it idk.

So far in classic wow unlike retail i was:
Carried personally through a dungeon & given all loots once.
Easily had groups/gifted items at least more than 20 times.
Was aknowledged by other players and had great positive blasts.
Given a bunch of enchants for free by a 60 once
Have at least 1 person always buff me who is a complete stranger without a word or after i buff them for fun.
It may be me being a casual that likes being nice and play just for fun hoping on and off the game but... while still only 30 so far i mostly did not really meet the bad players... i also started the char at launch... must be that all the worst peoples are now 60s maybe. I also prefer pve which... well help.
As for toxic player its easy. Just dont care about the insecure entitled edgelords and ignore them and report. Nothing to prove to them and gm will kick their arses hopefully better than arguments.
In the end... this whole ego tryhard thing i think was always pretty stupid... just play for fun and who care... dying is normal and campers can be reported. Just relax, enjoy the game and social and tone down to a more simpler playstyle... kind of like back in 2004 but with better internet convenience & discord. NEVER force yourself to play or feel you must catch up... it may be semi true for retail but its again rather pointless and just lead to unhealth and burnout... i personally had that by trying to rush 60 at first from launch.
In the end this is primarily a game meant to have personal fun. The social is important but secondary and NOBODY CARE about being impressed. Really, that whole insecurity thing is very very stupid and these peoples probably have mental illiness or issues irl.
Trying to be the very best is also rather pointless up to a point when it become dangerous for yourself and getting all the best gears or wiping aint ultimately that big of a deal. Its just a game... a fun retro mmorpg. But nothing to get addicted about.

The problem with re-doing it as classic, it let the sweats study and min max on the casuals trying to live it for the first time or casually again. Regardless of that, the game is no longer an MMO or RPG, which is what made is the biggest game of possibly 30 years? For RPG, you get what, 7 talents so being anything but a cookie cutter build is impossible. For MMO, dungeon finders etc mean you dont' have to interact with anyone, you run into a room and aoe delete everything with no fear of dying it's really an action game with other people around now
