I remember seeing it at Regent Park, it was pouring with rain so the show was delayed an hour or so, then it had to be stopped as it drizzled making the stage too wet for the dancers. What a show, what a performance by Tyrone Huntley. I think I've seen four versions of Jesus Christ but this was by far my favourite.
I get to see this production on Tour, it is coming to my hometown's flagship theatre! This will be the second production I have seen (I saw the arena tour Pro-shot with Tim Minchin)
Rosemary Reuther, in the 1960's, one of the nation's outstanding Catholic scholars and a teacher at George Washington University and Howard University, exposed the origins of our church offices in her book: The Church Against Itself, Herder and Herder, NY, 1967, page 134, "The first concept of church office was borrowed, not surprisingly, from the synagogue. Thus we find that the church administration, a short time after the sanhedrin had demanded Christ's crucifixion, kicked out Jesus' followers and adopted the dictatorial administration of his murderers. Thus, the strange role of the churches in denying Christ and trying to destroy his followers. This is why the churches today embrace every tenet of Communism and reject every principle of Christ. It doesn't make sense in this performance because they are dancing round Judas. But on stage during this song they are dancing around Jesus and it's really effective at showing how swept up in their adulation Jesus has become and how much it freaks Judas out.
My favourite musical - This particular production is the best I have ever seen. V talented cast. Wish I could get an album!
