Wait... People didn't realize this??? I read the books years ago and I thought it was obvious that a mother who carries their child around on a leash & dictates their every action is abusive. I hated her when I read about her, she reads like a karen to me LOL

When I was young I thought she was justified because of her children getting murdered. But my opinion has changed over the years for sure lol. Karen is the perfect descriptor of her too. “My daughter Anenome is a perfect angel who never would have attacked Moon” or “May I speak to your queen?” are something I can imagine her saying.

I remember seeing coral and thinking "oh she seems like a caring mother" and then I saw anemone on a leash and finding out she was being used as a weapon and being "engaged" to whirlpool and instantly changed my mind. I didn't really see her as a self insert because all her negative traits are so obvious like blaming someone else and punishing the guard of the hatchery (she may have had some things in common with the author, like writing scrolls, but I didn't see it as a self insert). I'm still glad this was brought up

Not to mention Coral has killed dragons over them failing to protect her eggs before! In the Lost Heir, she kills Tortoise as she left the Royal Hatchery unprotected; thus, not preventing the death of one of her unhatched daughters. She is shown to kill Royal Hatchery guards in a very similar way as before, but this time for a much more unreasonable reason. Abalone is seen guarding the Royal Hatchery but begins to development a strange condition that eventually causes him to go unconscious and, as a result, causing all the current female dragon eggs to die. It makes no sense for her to not show at LEAST a little mercy, as Abalone literally could not GUARD THE EGGS DUE TO BEING UNCONSCIOUS AND SICK! She has Snapper executed as well for her disobedience and failure to prevent the demise of her eggs. These dragons did fail her, but the fact that Coral’s first reaction to these kinds of problems is murder is really telling. She also expressed wanting to kill Webs for stealing one of her eggs, which is just yet another piece of evidence that proves Coral is a vengeful and terrible old queen.
Coral is literally so obsessed with having heirs that she will KILL anyone that fails her. Queen Coral is an unbelievably cruel queen, not to mention everything else you said in the video. I sure do hope she is replaced soon. But to be honest, she doesn’t really have any heirs that I think would want to or be able to do it except Moray, who we barely know anything about. I guess we’re just have to see.

But then again, on the one talon, Coral couldn’t help it. After Orca challenged her and she nearly lost, she had to kill her daughter. Right afterwards, all her daughters were dying. She was heartbroken and probably had no idea what she was doing. Of course Coral isn’t the best queen, nobody would ever be. But she’s just getting angry because her heirs to the throne were dying and she didn’t know why; she assumed her guards were somehow being lazy and not noticing anyone sneaking in to the hatchery. She didn’t even know that Orca was an animus, or that she enchanted the statue in the hatchery, expecting to win. Coral only wanted a living daughter, and since her husband died in the SkyWing arena due to Tsunami, she was even _more_ heartbroken. Yes, she did kill dragons for horrible reasons. Yes, she is overprotective of Anemone. Yes, she doesn’t care about her sons. But she had her reasons; she wanted a daughter. After Tsunami saved her final heir, Auklet, I imagine that Coral calmed her cycle of posting guards then killing them. She had three daughters who would be great queens one day- Tsunami, Anemone, and Auklet- so of course she would be more calm, as that was all she wanted. And her sons, they would never be able to rule unless they bent the rules of the SeaWings and probably every other tribe as well. “Only female royal members can rule their tribe”. I’m saying, I don’t think Queen Coral wanted to do what she did, but she was doing what a part of her thought she had to do. She was only heartbroken by the death of her first daughter Orca, then losing so many female dragonets, then losing her husband. It just made her go crazy, is all.

@@OtterPxp When Tsunami offered to protect the egg, Coral threatened to kill her if she failed. She threatened to kill her own daughter, granted she might've done that to scare Tsunami, but it was still a very messed up thing to do. And just because she been through some stuff, is no excuse to act the way she did. She killed dragons who practically starved themselves to protect her eggs. Also, I don't blame Orca for hiding her animus powers from Coral, because Coral would've exploited her like she does with Anemone. Not to mention Whirlpool. Coral was fine with one of her daughters marrying that creep, and since Whirlpool considered marrying Auklet with little thought, it's probably implied that Coral would've been fine with her newborn dragonet marrying a full grown dragon. And as for the sons, yes, Coral wanted a daughter, but does that make it okay to neglect the rest of her children? She doesn't even bother to remember any of her sons' names, all she cares about is a heir!

Isn't that obvious? As much as it was caused by grief and does not look intentional (imo she was just so scared of ever losing daughters again that she would rather hurt them than letting them die), it's still abusive. She doesn't care for her sons, she put Anemone and Auklet on a leash, etc.
What we can all hope is that after destroying the statue of Orca and maybe some guidance from Tsumami and Anemone, she'll lean to not make the same mistakes again, even if it's out of love.

    • @goldenfredbear7074

I agree. Especially the fact that she still put Auklet on a leash after she learned the truth about "the hidden assassin ". You'd think she would learn her lesson after that but nope, she still chose to smother her daughters with "helicopter parenting " and dispose her sons like they're trash to her. Plus she has zero faith in the dragons around her. Once they fail she murders them. When I first read the lost heir I thought maybe she was a better queen than Scarlet but no, she's just as bad.

Eyy thanks for talking about this! Was wondering if anyone on youtube thought about this, I've been seeing this pop up on the wiki and tumblr but never on here.
In my opinion Coral is abusive, yes, and the way she and the narrative brush her actions off as if it's nothing is kinda ehh? But I've grown to enjoy her character more because of those elements.
She's a queen who has killed countless dragons for failing her to the point of near absurdity, she's said to be a good-ish mother that only after *13+* years is even acknowledging her sons, she's supposedly cares deeply about her daughters only to keep Anemone on a leash, be completely fine with using her as a weapon against her wishes, and threaten her with a muzzle along the leash. She's 'a good person' who's easily manipulated by Blister with flattery. She's "beloved" by her kingdom even though she's dragged them into a foreign war that they have NOTHING to gain from.
There's just so many contradictions here, so many leaps in logic, so much things gone by and ignored that i can't help but be fascinated ngl.
Also about the self insert argument... Please don't. Just. Please.

This is a good analysis, I was aware of most of this, but the love-bombing observation is new to me and while I knew her treatment of Tsunami was wrong it wasn't something I could articulate. I will add a few things that you missed about how bad Coral actually is: she believes in and perpetuates blood purity where dragons like Riptide are bad because his blood-line was "tainted" by Webs while Gill and Whirlpool where amazing because of their blood-line. Coral surrounds herself in an echochamber of dragons who adore her like Moray and Whirlpool and punishes those who criticize her, and that's made worse when it's revealed that's she basically making propaganda about how AMAZING she is, making it even harder for others to recognize her poor leadership or even criticize it. There are three reason why I think people defend her so much, one they fell for the in-universe propaganda about how she's an amazing queen, two the end the books themselves don't seem to fully recgonize how bad her abuse and actions are, excusing her abuse towards anemone by saying it's not as bad as Tsunamis, and three people love her tragic element of her losing her daughters, and like Kestrel, they make her into a tragic character and excuse her actions because tragedy.
Despite all of this however, I like Coral! I like her similarly to how I like Kestrel, Dune, and Scarlet, their interesting and fun to explore, but I fully recognize that they are NOT good people. The one thing I really like about Coral is the she's the last morally questionable queen as all of the recent ones (except Wasp but she likely to die) are glorified into amazing leader, even ones that weren't originally like Glacier have been turned into morally upstanding characters. This just makes Coral stand out as somewhat realistic since, you know, absolute monarchy isn't good, which while it doesn't need to be explored in a fantasy story aimed at kids, was something the first arc seemed to be conscious of that the recent arcs dropped.
    Again, great video!

    • @5rcane
      @5rcane  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Coral’s ego definitely is no small part of everything. I’m decently sure she wrote her own biography in canon LOL

Fin wins the challenge and kills his mother, but some dragons don't accept him as king, due to being male and Coral herself not recognizing it as a challenge. It was pointed out in the books, and the only reason why it wasn't brought up that often after The Last Heir was because Dragonets didn't want to talk about Tsunami's disturbed mother, especially that Tsunami herself wanted really badly to love her. But they sure as heck did remember she was crazy. I'm surprised to find the fandom thinks otherwise, like all of them read Queen Coral's scrolls instead of the book. But yeah, comparing Coral, to Burn who loved the smell of decaying flesh, and freakin Scarlet, is definitely unfair. Some stuff about Coral from "The Dragonet Prophecy" might have been retconned in "Jade Mountain Prophecy", because she was shown to actually pay attention to her sons this time, but I kinda believe that was also the result of her finally regaining peace, after so many years of being paranoid about her daughters being either murdered in their eggs, or stolen from hatchery, like Tsunami was. Again, we have to remember why she was so traumatized and crazy. She had this major tragedy happen to her, over and over again, and every time she was helpless to stop it. Remember in the prologue of Talons of Power, when the Queen learned about her eggs being murdered again, she didn't go into the violet fit like she did in The Last Heir, but instead she just grieved in silence and even later advocated for Turtle after Gill scolded him unfairly. This is why I believe Queen Coral used to be a calm and collected person, and after all that happened to her she devolved into this psycho maniac, who would let her guards bleed out onto her carpet and would pull out teeth out of dragons who failed her. And, just to be clear, I'm not saying Queen Coral is a good parent, because oh boy, she is not, and you can see how badly she fucked up her kids just by looking at them. And I wouldn't even say she's a good queen, because she's laughably easy to manipulate, which both Blister and Whirlpool used to their advantage, and also she's enforcing a class division in her kingdom in a very... interesting way. What I'm saying she shouldn't be compared to the likes of Burn, Blister or Scarlet.
Also, the love bombing argument is actually silly to me. If Tui did something right, is that she showed us that despite her going slowly bananas, Queen Coral loves her daughters unconditionally. Orca tries to murder her - she keeps all of her remaining sculptures in the palace to honor her. Tsunami leaves during an attack on the Summer Palace - she's still happy to see her every time she gets a chance to do so. Anemome wanders off to kill her and also murders Queen's favourite scribe - she's still her favourite daughter. That's definitely NOT something a cult leader does.
And by the end of the video I feel like while some people forgot to read about Coral's faults, and you forgot to read every passage in the first series when the characters criticized her. She's not Tui's self insert. Sunny's the closest to her self insert from the main cast, I believe. And every character that met Queen Coral criticizes her for her overprotectiveness, her impressionability, her violent behavior, her dishonesty, her spinelessness, her occasional, unnecessary cruelty. I believe someone compared her to Sunny once and Sunny got wildly offended. Unless Tui wants people to be offended then they are compared to her, she didn't make Coral her to be her self insert. That's just ridiculous of you to say and even kinda offensive.

People got the impression that Coral was a good person? She carries Anemone around on a leash. Her lost child Tsunami returns one day and the first thing she does is lock up her friends and start lying to her. She kills a guard because that guard was let off duty by her commander, Coral’s own brother Shark. She can’t even remember her son’s names. She’s delusional enough to keep her eggs in the royal hatchery even though it’s proven to be completely compromised.
The average SeaWing is more likely to die form Coral’s delusion than average SkyWings are from Scarlet’s bloodlust imo.

I don't think the author would write themselves as a self-insert where they keep their kid on a leash, marry them off to a gross dragon who died, and murder everyone who goes against their wishes, yknow? I always thought she was supposed to be portrayed as abusive and an asshole, just that she wasn't dethroned because the opportunity didn't present itself in narrative.

In all honesty, Coral reads as naive and emotionally damaged to me. That doesn't give her an excuse to do the things she does in the books, but maybe she'd be better if she had more of a guide. I will say, the council was a really smart decision on her part. She just needs to listen to it more. The emotional damage definitely came from all her possible heirs being killed before hatching. I can easily see why she's overbearing. She comes off as naive to me from how easily she was manipulated by Blister. But yes, throwing an adult as a sexual partner to a literal child is wrong as all fuck. There is no excuse to that.

Yes, I had noticed that too, that Queen Coral has such a certain abusive tendency.
Are you aware that the capture of child or adolescent dragons is also an indication of child trafficking or slave trade of children, a serious crime that exists on our earth and is hardly addressed ? After all, the dragon children were also kidnapped, sometimes sold by their parents or stolen from their parents. That is also part of the child trade. The author Tui enlightens us a little. Before I started reading Wings of Fire, I had learned about this issue of child trafficking. This is why I find Tui's books so special and important for clarification.

Honestly, if she didn't know that Tsunami and her friends were the DoD, i bet she would have had them executed, or used them as a bargaining chip! I would rather have ORCA as queen of the seawings than Coral, (AND ORCA PROBABLY WOULD HAVE CAUSED ANOTHER MASSACRE AND MOST LIKELY WOULD HAVE WIPED OUT THE ENTIRE TRIBE)

I can see the a few reasons why Queen Coral is so abusive to everyone. 1.She might have PTSD from killing Orca and doesn't want to feel that way ever again, so not only is she overprotective but also lashes out constantly to any who would dare question her being wrong about things, as well as she feeling that she will forever be a victim in her own kingdom. 2.Queen Coral is acting like the same way her mother did because the Kingdom Of The Sea has always had problems when it comes to being morally correct and being kind to not just their own tribe but other tribes in general, after all this kind of behavior has been happening way before Queen Coral was even born in the Darkstalker legends book which takes place 2,000 years ago the Seawing tribe act basically the same way as they do today. 3.Since the Seawing royal bloodline has always had the chance to breed animus', one of the Seawing animus' may have cursed the entire tribe to always have a negative aura/community/royalty. These are just theories but you can pick them apart if you want and perhaps there could one day be a video about what The Kingdom Of The Sea needs to do in order to truly be a safe kingdom again? I think it would be interesting to talk about.

  • @woflover70

I mean after the attacks (orca) and tsunami got kidnapped, it would be logical coral would want to protect her children, she never wanted to kill orca, and coral was afraid to lose her other children too. First two Points about her sons I agree but I have to contradict about Turtle: Sure, Turtle may be alone with only his brothers and care takers , He still wanted to be like his mother and in his book Coral did show affection towards him and promising to no to forget his name and it was bonding , as said by her voice . He is not treated like Coral's daughters as he doesn't have a harness and doesn't bring him every where like she does with Anemone but that s also a point added to your list that Coral is Abusive.
I have to contradict another point with her daughter Tsunami: Coral was not love-bombing as she always wished that they never stole her and showed affection . This also tells why Coral didn't forgive Webs and Punished him instead but this is also another point to your list as well because hurting someone who tried to do peace is abusive .
I have to contradict another point : Anemone was not rude due to Coral , But most likely by her animus spells that Whirlpool forced her to do . She only wanted to impress Darkstalker as she could finally meet someone who she thought understands her as how stressful it can be while being a animus.
Another Point to contradict : She did give the orders to lock the Dragonets of Destiny but she never told Shark to lock Clay . That is probably why she punished Shark into the dungeon but that will also make another point to your list as that is also abusive.
Another Point to contradict : She pushed Whirlpool by accident and didn't mean it so that means that she is NOT pushing over at that moment to be herself . She only went back to Coral to be safe NOT to be abused .
But I still agree with you in the most part
