I have found Arctic an interesting dragon for a long time. I think Diamond's abuse and him killing him friends contributed to it to. Maybe if he was cared for in the Night Kingdom he might have been ok. Thanks for the video.

He definitely didn’t receive much support from anyone other than Foeslayer. He needs therapy, but then again every other IceWing probably do as well.

@@5rcane It was mainly Arctic's soul being corrupted because of killing innocent dragons when he couldn't think straight and was only trying to do it in the name of love. Even then, he didn't mean to kill those IceWing guards while escaping. He only wanted to stop them. "Oh but Arctic didn't feel comfortable in the Night Kingdom. He wanted his home." Arctic could have moved to a mountainous region in the Night Kingdom for cold or just, idk, make himself invisible to any specific dragon whenever and just go to the Ice Kingdom and have Foeslayer, Whiteout, and Darkstalker visit him. Foeslayer and Arctic is about the most healthy relationship I can IMAGINE in this silly dragon book series. The only thing that stopped it is Arctic’s animus magic, like how Moon and Winter could have (or maybe will) been one of the most healthy ships in the series, Winter just needed external character development, which Qibli had beaten him to, causing a room temperature ship that deflated my expectations. (shhhh don’t tell them this but I think the love triangle was totally unnecessary and they're actually all 9.5 year olds in human years)

I'm so happy you did a video on Arctic! I personally believe that some of the fandom kind of just ignores how he was practically manipulated by the NightWings and everything he went through.

He’s a very sympathetic villain but he’s always reduced to Darkstalker’s father : ( I feel like the MAPs Rory and Chara subvert this a bit though

I agree a lot with this. Arctic to me is a really interesting character and the fact that a lot of the fandom just writes him off as 'mean dad' doesn't really do him justice. He was just a dragon who wanted to escape the abuse that Diamond inflicted onto him and by seeking solitude in another dragon who he basically just met that both agrees with him and has similar experiences. In my own opinion, I believe instead of love both dragons just had platonic attraction and mistook it for 'true love'. I also think that if Foeslayer wanted to go anywhere that wasn't in the Night Kingdom it would have been a bit better.
Apologies, I just really like talking about this. I may just post my entire short essay if somebody wants in the replies.

Honestly I think Arctic was a good character and definitely had an interesting story. That said though he also deserved some punishment and usually to me I think that Albatross was kind of like Arctic in a way. Ignored by the royal family and only called to be used. I agree that it wasn’t animus magic it was the household.

I think that killing all his friends contributed to it, along with being manipulated by the Nightwings.

  • @gustaveliasson5395

    Abuse made Arctic abusive.
    * The nightwings' plan to use Foeslayer to steal the animus gene-thingy meant that his and Foeslayer's relationship had a contant undertone of distrust.
    * Darkstalker is a nightwing animus; the *FIRST* nightwing animus, and he hatches during a war with the icewings that started because of the nightwings' technically-not-an-abduction of Arctic.
    * Arctic knows that his own son will eventually be turned into a weapon for Vigilance; a weapon which she *will* deploy against the icewings.
    * Arctic also knows that regardless of what he and Foeslayer has going, all Vigilance really needed him for was the animus genes. Once Darkstalker and Whiteout hatched, Arctic himself became disposable.
Dude probably knew, the moment Darkstalker poked his head out of the egg, that sooner or later he'd probably be killed by his own son. Did a pretty good job of suppressing that thought though.

I disagree with your point on fathom and albatross's relationship not deteriorating. We see clearly that Albatross hated fathom for a long time before trying to kill him, in fact, Alby (not spelling the whole thing out multiple times so sue me) Alby started hating fathom the moment fathom was diagnosed with animus (ehhh close enough) and that hatred only grew. Fathom just didn't see it, because Alby hid it from him, but at the end of Alby's life we see that he had wanted to kill fathom for a long time. Maybe it's only correlation, but his hatred increases along with how many times he uses his magic.

I disagree, using animus magig doesnt deteriorate a dragons soul. Its a myth. We see clear motives for the dragons that went mad. They didnt lose their soul, they just had terrible lives and/or were power hungry.

Albatross didn't want to be remembered as a monster. (irony) Albatross wanted to be remembered for building the summer palace. In comes his grandson Fathom a dragon with greater magic than him. Albatross realised he would never escape being remembered as a monster so long as those who threatened his legacy (irony) still lived. At the point where he went on his murder spree he felt he no longer had anything left to lose. It was either he became a monster and successfully erased the future's memory of his monstrousness, or he would be remembered for being a monster.

I agree with a lot of points made in this video, however I dont agree with the point about Arctic loving Whiteout shallowy. Before she even hatched, he was giving her a chance wilst Foeslayer had already written her of as dead. He tollerated her synthesia even though at that time he was already losing it. He also didn't hate Darkstalker because of his appearance. He felt uncomfortable around him, but didn't say anything until Foeslayer started an argument about Darkstalkers name, not giving Arctic a say in the matter. Even his abuse is mostly an off screen matter with Darkstalker only mentioning one example of it. Also, when Arctic enchants Whiteout he doesn't enchant her in a pernament manner, he gives her an enchanted necklace which can be easily removed. That tells us that Arctic didn't enchant her cause he didn't like her synthesia, he enchanted her so that Diamond wouldn't kill her. He also most likely took her there to appease Diamond and convince her to free Foeslayer. He'd then most likely stay in the Ice Kingdom alone helping Whiteout and Foeslayer escape. However this is speculation so take it with a grain of salt.
He didnt turn awfull because of magic. He turned awfull because of the hate and abuse he had to endure 24/7 and because the climate and sudden change of sleep cycle roasted his brain. Also after rereading Darkstalker: Legends I have come to the conclusion that Arctic suffers from trauma (in chapter 2 there is a scene were Darkstalker mindreads Arctic and see's the memories of the time he ran away with foeslayer. Darkstalker proclaims after that Arctic did something that was haunting him to that day telling us that he had some form of trauma, the event scarring him mentally so much that he was terrified of himself and his animus magic to that day.) and most likely depression since he shows a lot of signs of it e.g. being angry all the time, feeling guilt for that day, getting easily irrated and being very intolerable, lacking energy, disturbed sleep (although that would be after forcing to change his sleep cycle). I really wish Arctic got the happy life he deserved, but the truth is that even if he and Foeslayer became hermits his trauma wouldn't leave him and that in turn would make it impossible for him to be truly happy.

Between killing his own tribe, friends, dragons he knew, and the Nightwing's plot to seduce him, albeit without Foeslayer's knowledge, Arctic was doomed from the start.
But I do think animus magic plays a role. I would describe it more like intoxication. Not a guarantee, but certainly something that can help pull bad behaviors.

Yeah... I *really* disagree with that assessment. Arctic is absolutely abusive. Towards Darkstalker he acts callous and hateful, using insults like 'moon-eyes'. Whiteout was mistreated, too, just differently. I believe Arctic saw Whiteout as a possession.
Attached and cared for her? Sure, in the same way you'd care for a family heirloom, or piece of jewelry. But not *love*. Here's a passage that reflects that:
'His father always behaved as though Whiteout was his only dragonet, his precious snowflake of a daughter, but he was completely careless of her feelings. He brought her special fish and paraded her around the tribe, and then they got home and he acted like she was a necklace he could hang in the corner until he needed her again.'
This attitude of seeing Whiteout as a possession is only amplified by the ending, where Arctic *literally* treats her like an object. Enchanting her, rewriting her identity, abducting her and intending to marry her off as a bargaining chip. Frankly, the only dragon I think Arctic *really* loved was Foeslayer. Nobody else, though. Attachment is not love.
Mind you, my viewpoint may be biased. I had an abusive upbringing with a mother who shared many of Arctic's abusive qualities so I find it easy to recognize. Arctic's a fantastic character, but he's definitely abusive from the information we're provided.
There's a LOT more I could say but this comment is way too long as it is, lol.

I don't think that animus could made the user become mad, example:
Albatross: because of being used to much without care that make his anger become larger and larger then turn him into an insane lost soul animus.
Anemone:She wasn't trying to kill Turtle,it just Darkstalker control her mind.
Arctic:abuse by Diamond and being used to much have took his freedom leading him to follow the rules until he escape but the anger was still in his mind so it lead him into an abuse dad
Darkstalker:he wasn't evil, being abuse while being a dragonet that damage his mind and used his animus power to much for anything and because of protecting his sister.
Orca:being attached to her mother harness made her mind damage until she discover animus and being used to gain her freedom no matter what cost it cost
Stonemover:he wasn't,he just don't wanna be a part of the plan
Turtle:he don't want his mother to control him like albatross,he was trying to get her attention not matter how good he is,how sweet he are but it wasn't enough for her
