Anyone Can Turbo Swap a Subaru

  • Does your Subie need a little more juice? Has "just swap it" been preached to you? Here's how that goes.
If your car has a 5 speed-
-notch current or swap in wrx subframe
    -potentially swap steering pump/line
    -swap throttle cable
-remove the dash/fenders to replace the bulk harness and ecu with the corresponding unit.
My original and wrx harness both came from an 02 impreza chassis so I didn't need to merge anything, although 5% of clips didn't match up.
If your body style never came turbo in the US or you don't have the corresponding engine you will need a custom merge but the hardware will fit all the same.
If your car does not have a 5 speed- get one.
At the same time it is wise to replace: motor mounts, clutch, flywheel, all gaskets, water/oil pump, timing belt, and flush all your fluids. You also may need a new radiator, I did.
Oh, and for all I know 08+ are crazy different and none of this applies. Usdm Ej205 seen here

Hey man, my '07 impreza 2.5i NA decided to spice things up with a thrown rod recently. I just pulled the motor a few days ago for fun with some friends but I am considering swapping it with a turbo motor. The new motor would come with the full engine harness and I would get a matching ECU of course, what I am wondering is if you really need the whole bulkhead harness to go with it? Also I have the fuel line issue with two original lines, let me know if you have got any more info on that. Thanks!

You'd gave to swap the harness and run a fuel line, you can get the fuel line pretty cheap from a junk yard. There's plenty of information on forums of people doing it. Going from NA to turbo is why you need to swap the harness and ECU.

I’m planning on doing something similar, and yes the bulkhead harness is different between the EJ253 NA and EJ255/EJ257 turbo motors. You will need to swap the entire bulkhead, and additional modification to the harness may* be needed.
The other thing you need to take notice is that the CAN-bus system may or may not give you trouble, and the immobilizer will need to be reset. I’m still trying to figure this stuff out as well, especially if the CAN-bus modules communicate the same across NA and turbo subies

That's tough, mine was a direct swap given it had three lines already. Adding that third line sounds like it'd be a pretty involved job but the chassis' set up for it and the parts can be found on scrap cars for pretty cheap so it can't be impossible.

Ryan Yea, didn’t give in to the “buy a WRX” talk. From what I know, the engine is a direct fit. However for the ecu and wiring, would I need it from the same year EJ20? With so many made I’m sure there are differences. Also besides the subframe cut, are there any steps I’m overlooking. Couple videos mentioned a fuel line. Thanks for the reply!

@@aaron4100 While they're broadly similar, they'll sometimes have minute differences that'll make you dizzy with anger. The most Important thing is finding the turbo harness for your car (US spec?) and matching it with a motor of pretty much the same year. For that year in the US they used 2.5 while japan stayed 2.0 and I think you could go either way with careful planning. As for the fuel line if you have three on the drivers side of the engine bay you're good to go. I think some models came with two and I'm not sure what to do then

    • @PureBigGamingUk

I'm trying to do the same as you mate but we got a 1.5 litre model equivalent to the 2.5i, here in the UK. My donor is a 2005 forester XT that has the same EJ205 engine as the wrx and the impreza is 2008 so drive by wire the same as what you get I imagine? only seen one video of a guy on here swap an EJ20 into the GR hatch but he only complains about the wiring and starts it, no real info.

    • @user-lz3sv5sw9u
      @user-lz3sv5sw9u ปีที่แล้ว

@@aaron4100 Hopefully 2 years isn’t too late. You will need to swap over the ECU, engine wiring harness, and the bulkhead harness (built in to the dash). You’ll also have to reset the immobilizer anytime you swap ECU, gauge cluster, and other components with an immobilizer built in.
Because you’re also talking about an 08+ year model, you may need to worry about the CAN-bus system which communicates with the following: VDC(ABS), TCM, ECU, steering angle sensor, radio/navigation unit, HVAC, gauge cluster, and the body integrated unit. Hopefully if I figure something out, I can post a very detailed and thorough explanation the internet needs hah.

      Hey,
If you have the tools, time, and confidence for a wrx swap it's very rewarding.
The hardest part is merging the wrx harness with the gf8 but it's definitely possible and you'll know a LOT about your car after.
iWire is a company that can do the wiring job well if you don't want to.
I'm still driving this car 100k miles later and I've never regretted swapping it.

Hey sorry for the late response.
It really all depends on the situation. It made sense for me because I had the parts and it is actually pretty straightforward if you can wrench. This car went on to do 600mi work weeks for 6-8 months, made a one-way trip from coast to coast, was lived in for another several months, and continues to keep it moving. If you have the time, money, ability to live without a car and you genuinely want the experience you'll never regret it. Full swap including motor, new clutch, exhaust, ecu, accessport, tune, and random bits and pieces probably put me close to $1500.

The differences between your car and a wrx is a way more than you mention. Clutch, transmission, sensors (02, cam position, etc), ecu, spark plugs, coils injectors compression ratio suspension. Your also single overhead cam. The only way I recommend throwing a turbo on a car like this is if you have many spare parts lying around. Price per power wrx is way more cost effective. Not only that but your literally buying wrx exhaust and intake parts. Writing this for the average person coming across this video wanting to turbo their Na Subaru. Buy a wrx instead.
