    The plants are a wandering jew and a syngonium (arrowhead) NOT a pothos. A HUGE thank you to Meech for spotting that!

    My P. Cambridgei did really well in a bioactive habitat. They appreciate extra humidity, and keeping the plants healthy encourages the right environment for them. Also, she was just beautiful there with live plants.

    Also, I recommend the orange isopods highly. Yes, they are large enough to be in danger of becoming prey to smaller juveniles and slings, but they sure are pretty in the habitat! Bigger spiders don't seem to bother them.

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, someone else was recommending rubber duck isopods? I had no idea that there were "designer" species. I'm definitely going to check that out. I was a little gunshy as there was just a big Facebook discussion where an expert on them said that any of them could eat a molting t (although this wouldn't be a common thing). Thanks, Dovey!

    You could just culture your own springtails. It's super easy from everything that Ive seen and you wont have to keep buying new cultures for future builds. You could do the same with the Isopods. I saw the biodude's springtail vid that his master culture was 9 years old at the time and going strong. Just some food for thought. Love the vids Tom, you're a great teacher

    Dear Mr Moran, I just had my first terrible molt. I came home after a particularly busy day only to find my psalmopeus reduncus in the molting position. Yey, I thought and went to get tea and some food. An hour later, it was in the same position. I realized something was wrong and I peered in with a flashlight only to see it had ripped off one of its pedipalps already and was struggling with the rest of the legs, and some of the legs were already bending in terrible angles. I called my spider dealer and followed his instructions but even so at the end the poor thing is now a mess of mangled legs. I still don’t know what went wrong. I had a water dish in at all things, I wet down the soil regularly . And there was plenty of ventilation. I don’t want to give up on it and the spider person seems to think as long as it lives the broken legs will mend with time. I feel awful and weak unable to really do much for it at this point.

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, Mausamirai! Awwww...I'm so sorry to hear about your bad molt. That sounds absolutely awful. I think that sometimes, it's something within the spiders that causes the issues. I know that I've had a couple of molt issues with spider that I'm pretty sure were kept correctly. I do hope that youre little one pulls through.

    According to Petko and Mark even the real heavy webbers don't effect the bio plants at all negatively. They just free the plants a little every now and again with their hands, from tight webbing around them. They don't harm the plants at all.

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      For most of them, it seems fine. For the super heavy webbers, it can be a bit of a hassle and disruptive to the spiders. My GBB, for example, has blanketed her entire cage covering both plants. Although the snake plant is fine, the fern needs more light. When I got to try to trim back the webbing, it totally disrupts the spider and changes it surrounding. The spider was not pleased. lol

    What a beautiful tarantula! This series of videos is making me want to make a bio active enclosure. Just got to figure out which of my crew would do/look good in a bioactive..... how did you choose which species to do? I feel like you briefly mentioned it in one of the videos, but I’m not quite sure

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Sam! I'm totally loving these. The plants just look so darned good. For the first batch, I was trying out the product, so I specifically tried a wide array of them. I specifically picked the GBB because I wanted to see if it was possible to do one with a heavy webbing arid species. I also chose two arboreals and a terrestrial. I'll be doing one with a fossorial species soon, too.

    I think my first bioactive is gonna be my phormictopus domincan purples adult enclosure. I love coleus plants they look incredible and basically are weeds they will grow in anything and a lot of the ones for sale usually are pretty small. I just dunno how id go about making sure they dont introduce other stuff. Might be best to stick to staple, safe stuff.
    I think a big bioactive enclosure with a giant purple spider with trippy looking coleus plants would make for an amazing centerpiece especially if I luck out and its a female!

    I’m pretty sure the Bio Shot that Josh created can be considered a substitute for the cleaning bugs. I assume he sent the Bio Shot with everything else, so it wouldn’t have been the end of the world if you didn’t add the cleaning crew, especially since Ts don’t have big poops/urates (the Bio Shot also takes care of urates). ☺️

    Picked one up as a freebie with my FNT order today! I'm assuming since I've kept irminia and cambridgei that this species should be old hat for me, right? Your girl reminds me of my irminia -- I keep her in an ET nano Tall and she's always out on display and VERY active. She's like a Jurassic Park velociraptor, I swear; constantly checking around the door and the lid for openings. I know psalmos are escape artists, but this girl is next-level. Should I expect more of the same from the reduncus?

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, Dan! Hope all is well with you. LOVE the velociraptor description hahaha Mine have both been pretty shy overall and and not particularly jumpy when I do catch them out. They also seem to be a bit smaller than the irminia or cambridgei. I've had no issue with them whatsoever!

    Wow! Love the choices on species for the bioactive setups! 🙂 I have made bio setups for amphibians but never for any of my tarantulas... it's definitely something I'd love to do one day. I've been sort of trending towards Psalmopiinae, Aviculariinae, and Poecilotheria species as I add to my collection, and they're the ones I'd love to see in setups like these! Just a few I have considered as possible candidates for bio setups:
    Psalmopoeus ecclesiasticus
    Psalmopoeus irminia
    Psalmopoeus reduncus
    Psalmopoeus cambridgei
    Tapinauchenius violaceus
    Poecilotheria formosa
    Poecilotheria vittata
    Poecilotheria regalis
    Avicularia avicularia morphotype 6
    Cyriopagopus sp hati hati
    Caribena versicolor
    Heteroscodra maculata
    Orphnaecus sp Panay blue (as a semi-arboreal setup)
    Dolichothele diamantinensis (semi-arboreal again)
    These are at least the species I have either females of, or multiple unsexed juveniles.. If I had my way (and money, space, time, etc) I'd have them ALL in naturalistic setups LOL

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ryan, that's a fantastic list! Many of the species you have on there I'm eyeing for bio active enclosures as well. I have one set up now that might be getting my C. versicolor, and my O. Panay blue will definitely be getting one down the road. The possibilities are endless! I already have 10 set up. hahaha Thanks, bud!

    Soon every single enclosure at Toms house have Bio active substrate! I habe used it before. Not Biodudes stuff, but i have experimented in moist tanks with isopods and springtails. Both cuban isopods and isopods i collected in the forrest in Sweden. I have found that this only works in moist tanks. So i dont think its a great idea to have them in a GBB tank! But keep up the good work!!

    I'm a new keeper & have quiet a few new world species I'm a little confused about springtails, are springtails a good idea for all tanks or just bioactive ? As I want to be a good keeper but not sure if I should add them to my tanks or not as mine are not bioactive mine are just on coconut substrate

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Nicky! Springtails are useful if you're keeping species that require moist substrate. If the substrate isn't kept moist, they dry out and die. If you're just using dry coco fiber, I wouldn't bother. Hope that helps!

    Beautiful! Two questions: You said you have the LED Full Spectrum lights on them. I thought you used to close your window shades so the T's have subdued light. Won't this continuous light bother them? And- If your springtails start multiplying in large numbers how do you control that? Good luck with your project. That Wandering Jew looks like it has grown after a week. Hope you'll be able to do some pruning safely in the future.

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello! I've always had a day/night cycle in my tarantula room with two full-sprectrum lights. It's light in there for about 12 hours of the day. I covered the window because I didn't want the sunlight getting in and baking the tarantulas in their tanks. I've never had an issue with any of them, and many are all right out in the open. So far, my O. philippinus and GBB sit right out in the open under the plant light (they aren't directly on the tanks).
      Yes, those wandering jews grow like weeds! I'm picking up some scissors so that I can prune. :) Thank you!

    I prefer bioactive enclosures over purely pragmatic ones, especially for animals in their final enclosures. I would love to see more builds such as this one. 👍🏻 And do you happen to care for Hottentotta spec. as well? I'd love a care sheet about them. 🤗

      Hello, Frau! Yes, I'm using a lot of them now with my adults. I think that I have about 20 with plants now, and I have many more to set up. And unfortunately, I don't have one at the moment, but I plan to get another.

    • @TomsBigSpiders

      Hi, Danny! The Bio Dude says that you don't need a drainage layer with those. Supposedly, they work fine without them. I'll see how it goes!

    Hiya Tom my p reduncus sling I keep it in a 32oz deli cup the first 3 weeks I had it it only webbed a little bit behind the cork bark and was out every night and would actively hunt baby crickets it's since completely webbed itself in behind the bark it's abdomen is fat it's been over a week since I've fed it I don't wnt too put crickets in as I think it's in premoult would you just leave it and wait for it to reappear any help would be much appreciated thanks.

      Sorry for the delay (again) Wayne! Ugh. From what you're describing, I would probably wait to try it again. Or, if wanted to sure, I would drop in a prekilled cricket and see if it's gone the next day.
