Thanks. My dad brought his 2001 Road Star 1600 over today so we could change the oil for him. Your other video helped. While the bike was here I noticed it was leaking a fair amount of gear oil. This video helped me see what’s involved in changing it or topping it off with the weep hole. Thanks!
Recently got a 2000 1600 that had been sitting up for a while. Watched yiur vid on how to change the oil, and this popped up. I'm glad it did because i wouldnt have know this needs changing too.
Thanks for taking the time to walk through the oil change process. I played Hell trying to find the oil bag bolt. 😁 The process is similar my '72 Shovelhead. Thanks again and smooth road n sunny days to ya. 👍😁
I don’t have a Road Star but I think they are beautiful machines. They also look super easy to service. Why am I watching? I am keeping all my options open for future bikes
Hi. Exactly the video I needed. Can you recommend a gear oil that I can purchase from an auto store or even Walmart? Also, what size is the O-Ring on the filler plug? Thanks
Ditto, can't get it out at all. Bloody stupid design if you ask me. I'm thinking might just have to fill it through the weep hole with a little tube or something.
I wasn't able to take the filler plug but I managed to take one exhaust pipe, sweep hole and drain bolts out and add the oil in the sweep hole!! Thank you!!@@MichaelWerle
is oil pump gear failure a common issue with these bikes? I have a '99 and know not to rev the engine when it's cold but don't know if the thicker gear has been installed
Yes the older road stars oil pump gear is weak. If you ever need to change your clutch that would be the time to replace the oil pump gear. As long as your easy on your bike you should be ok. I had an 02 with 60,000 miles that had the old oil pump gear and I never had any issues.
@@Jadams1911 Thanks for the quick reply! Mine just passed 18,000 miles and runs great after rebuilding the carb, just did an oil change on it with help from your video and also referenced your carb disassembly video when we had to do that and it worked like a charm! Your videos are awesome and easy to understand, thanks for all your help
hello my yamaha roadstar 1600cc 1999 ,when it goes into first gear turns off whitout releasing the cluch , can you help me i am a beginner and thank you
Make sure the kick stand is up, there is a switch under the kick stand that stops the bike from being ridden with the kick stand down. If the kick stand is up and the bike does the same thing, then the switch is bad. It's easy to replace.
Thank you so much for making these videos! Quick question... maybe you mentioned it and I apologize if I missed it, how often do you change the gear oil? Thank you
escuche en muchos foros y recomendaciones el aceite 75w 90 para esta caja, parece que a todos les funciona muy bien, que opinas de este aceite? lo has usado en tu yamaha?
Just place a brick or block of wood under the kickstand so the bike is somewhat level when filling the gear oil. I just use Yamalube gear oil you can buy from the dealer.
I put a brick under my kickstand, it's not perfectly straight but it's good enough to drain the gear oil. I just leave the bike on the kickstand when I'm draining the engine oil.
James Adams , thanks for tour respond....can't make a choice yet...i have a back problem and people say better buy a wing instead a star because of the vibration.....is t that bad? Even when i put a backrest on the bike? They also tell me, star has gear problems and oilpump problems....what is you opinion on this......Diffecult to make the right choise, cause love the style of the road/wildstar.
The road star does vibrate but not as bad as a Harley. The older road stars up to 05 had issues with the oil pump gear, and a poor charging systems. I rode my 02 and my 06 cross country and enjoyed the bike. The nice thing about the road star is you can set it up to tour then when you come home strip it down to be a cruiser. Although I love the road stars if I had back problems I would look at a gold wing because they are smooth bikes and an awesome cross country bike.
James Adams .....thanks again! Nice to get some owners information. Indead to transform the wildstar is something you can't on a wing. And when i see your video's about the mentainance it looks a bit more easy on the star then it is on a wing. I want the bike for as much as possible small trips but when i want to visit my family it takes a 1500 km trip. So thanks for the tip....and drive safe!
i'll start something LOL regular oil in the engine, you do an oil change with synthetic oil, next oil change you only have, or want to use regular oil, can you? will it damage the engine? i don't think it matters, correct me if i'm wrong.......this should be fun🤣
Of course you can switch back and forth from regular oil to synthetic as many times as you like. You can even mix the two. It will not harm your engine. That's only a myth.
@@Jadams1911 known that for a few years now, needed to test you guys, a motorcycle shop tried to pull that one on me friday morning, gonna do my own oil change, i don't trust them🤣

Great video sir I just picked me up a Road Star and by far these are the best on TH-cam 👍
I just used a spark plug gapping tool instead of the washer and it worked like a charm!

You're welcome, I'm glad it helped.

Great tutorial James ! You taught me somethin' !
Thank you. Especially about the rubber washer!
Thanks James for the video, one question to al the community, What kind of oil need the gear?
SAE80API GL-4 hypoid gear oil is what the manual calls for, I use Yamaha lube from the dealer. it's SAE 80-90 API Service GL-4, GL-5
@@Jadams1911 Thankful
Can i use the same synthetic oil i use in engine oil? on this gear oil?

Would be nice to know what kind of fluid you used,,,
I used a door hinge for those who can’t find a strong enough washer! It also took about a half a quart.
Would you be able to do something about the decompression solenoid on your bike love your videos
You are amazing. Thank you for these videos. Huge help
Great Videos as the bike is new to me. Its really helped me a lot.
Thank you! I'm glad it helped.
you should start your videos with recommended intervals.
great videos man.
Good tip. Thank you!
James Adams how often should i do it?
The gear oil doesn't have to be changed as often as engine oil. I change mine each time I put on new tires.

Sir quick question, level surface on the kick stand? or have the bike at a 90 ?
I drain the gear oil on the kick stand, then I block up the bike level when I add oil.

Quick question... maybe you mentioned it and I apologize if I missed it, how often do you change the gear oil? Thank you
I change gear oil whenever I change tires. Gear oil just lubes a chain, not much friction so it last a long time.
How often should the gear oil be changed ?
He said about every time he changes the tires he changes the gear oil.

Does the gear box use the entire quart of oil? Thanks.
No, Just keep pouring the gear oil in until it starts coming out of the weep hole

How often should this be done?
I change my gear oil every time I put on new tires.

Does the bike have to be straight up, or can you do it on the kickstand?
The bike needs to be straight up. just put a block under the kickstand or have someone hold it up as you add the gear oil for a correct reading.
thank you for the quick response! love the vids! just bought a 2006 Road Star, so you videos have been very helpful!

What size Allen wrench? You should open the filler first because if you can't get it loose and you drain the fluid, your screwed refilling it up.
