The only problem with asking a vet about food is that your likely to come home with a bag of ultra processed over priced prescription junk food.

Yup they swear by the Royal or the Hills and it's crap and it's expensive!

Thank you for your expert advice. It's definitely not easy but this makes it feel a bit more manageable. Love how you talked to your pups at the beginning telling them it's raining. I do the same thing!

Thank you for this. Our senior pup has had a couple of bloodworks come back with elevated liver enzyme and we are just crushed. Trying to come up with things we can do.

oh my gosh, you're right. My dog has the most rare liver disease and they just prescribe "Hill's L/D''. I can not stand it, so I give him liver friendly veggies and anything else fresh I can do for him. And the script vet food.. went up in price :(

My Ellie is 1yr 10 months has a liver enzyme of 220 up from 190 6 months ago. I just started to give her 100 ml a day per veterinary. She is a Chorkie ( yorkshire / Chihuahua and weighs 16 lbs. She needs to loose weight. I have fed all three of my dogs, small, medium and large breeds homemade food and a little kibble. The vet told me that Ellie needed to be on a low protein diet and I am completely at a loss how to do that. I was told to do Hill science diet canned food and I read the ingredients and that was an absolute NO. SO I WOULD BE GRATEFUL if you would recommend a recipe.

I can google milk thistle but do you have more info than might be there? Also, can you explain if we are to cook things or not? Could you also let us know what we're avoiding with higher liver numbers?

Most commercial dog foods are way too high in copper since there is no maximum copper level established by AAFCO. Also liver treats have become very popular which are crazy high in copper. Simply lowering the copper in the diet can help. I had this problem with my dogs and lowering the copper resolved the problem.

Hi there. Sorry to bother, but how did you lower the copper of your dog? Thank you

@susanamagalhaes3319 I reduced the amount of beef liver I was feeding to 2 percent of the diet. Ruminant liver is very high in copper. If you are feeding commercial food, I would check the copper levels.

I have a 14, almost 15 year old Jack-Chi named Mike. He is on a Hill Science Kidney support dog food that was prescribed by his vet. His kidney numbers are looking good now, but his liver enzymes are rising. His vet just prescribed Denamarin but he won't eat it, even in a pill pocket. We have bought a jar of Coco and Luna Liver and Kidney Support with milk thistle but he won't eat that either. It's not a really soft soft chew. He has lost a few teeth. He loves table scraps and only eats the dog food when nothing else is available. He will eat veggies, broccoli and carrots and pretty much anything we are eating. Do you have any suggestions?

Just found out my small dog has liver disease. Could I use sweet potato for pumpkin? I read somewhere that boil chicken liver is good for dogs with liver disease. What is your opinion? Thanks for your recipe and I value your opinions.

My six year old male Yorkie was just diagnosed with Hepactic Microvascular Dysplacia. He's a normal seven pound dynamo who was currently getting Nulo small breed as his main diet. The Vet prescribed a prescription diet and said my little buddy must eat hydrolyzed foods for the rest of his life. Currently, there are only three brands of hydrolyzed foods on the market. Royal Canin HP, Purina ProPlan HA, and Science Hill Z/D are the three choices she gave me to choose from. The Vet sent me home with a can of Royal Canin HP wet food to see if he likes it. He will not eat it. I mixed it with his normal food and he deliberately eats around the Royal Canin it to avoid eating it. My question is, are there any home made foods I can make that will keep my little Bruno healthy with his condition, or am I stuck choosing from these three brands? I am about to order the Sciene Hill Z/D dry food to see if he will eat it. But at $69.00 for a seven pound bag or $69.00 for twenty four 5.5oz cans of wet food can get really expensive if he doesn't eat it and I have to keep ordering each brand to find the one he will eat. Are there any alternatives, or am I stuck with these three choices of food for my little Bruno?

Not helpful. You are vague about the ingredients, and then you say ask your vet. As many have stated in this post very few vets know much of anything about nutrition for dogs. I looked everywhere for a dog nutritionist and the only ones I found online were more hacks that charge hundreds of dollars to give unqualified advice.
