I tell my guys that there are only the basics and advanced technique is nothing more than the basics done at a really high level. That's oversimplified, but you get my point. Having said that, I find it interesting that the masters that I have seen that do the basics at a really high level do in fact have advanced stuff, but they never, ever get a chance to break it out because the basics work too well. It's like they never get to bring out the magical +3 sword of Heaven because they have a really, really good Swiss army knife that hasn't found a job it cannot handle.
grandmaster barker taught similar joint locks very fundamental stuff that surprisingly useful in more situations than i could ever imagine
