  • Having now played every other game in the Gran Turismo series, I thought this year was finally time to tackle Tourist Trophy. Tourist Trophy was released by Polyphony Digital in 2006, just a little over a year after Gran Turismo 4, and repurposes its engine to tackle a different kind of motorsport: motorcycle racing. I've been playing it over the last month, and I found it completely fascinating and I need to talk about it.
    This video assumes you are already familiar with how traditional Gran Turismo games are structured, and if you want a crash course, I recommend watching a video I made two years ago critiquing Gran Turismo 7's campaign which does not require prior knowledge of the series: • Gran Turismo 7 is All ...

      Interesting factoid i believe an early concept of Gran Turismo 5 included TT content ported along the GT4 content into a single game. Why they abandoned the idea is a mystery.

    Iam still dazzled by the fact that a game named " Tourist Trophy" didnt include the Isle of Man track. GT4 had the long Nordschleife so iam sure it could be done. Today bike games are such a niche with a tiny playerbase, basically there is only TT Ride on Edge and the Ride series...

    It was only about three weeks ago that I 100%'s Tourist Trophy. I managed to get ALL GOLD licences without ever tucking in for better top speed, because I just... didn't...know it was a thing until I came back to the early licenses and figured out that its the only way to get the gold on the circles and braking tests. Well, I wasted some extra hours but I was really good at Tourist Trophy then, that's for sure ! The rest of the game was - as usual with GT career modes - extremely easy in comparison.

      It's actually possible to gold the circle and braking tests without tucking in. I know this because I learned about tucking after i had golded all the licenses

    PS2 is my favorite console I'm always finding new games to play on it that I had no idea about and I end up liking a lot. I was not expecting to like Gran Turismo that much because I was not into cars or racing really but the opposite happened now I play those games a lot. I had no idea there was a Gran Turismo motorcycle game!!! Thanks for making this video and letting me know!

    I played this game as well as Riding Spirits a lot. Those two games had its own characteristics - RS2 was the real 'GT for bikes' with more manufacturers and unique bikes, but the GT engine and physics is arguably better in TT.

    I love TT. Despite the age, I still really enjoy the handling model in comparison to something like Milestone’s Ride series.
    It’s just a shame that there’s so little content to go around the amazing riding model. This game deserved a full style campaign mode, like GT4. The challenges to unlock the bikes are somewhat fun, but it would be great to purchase bikes, upgrade them, start small and work your way up, like GT4.
    I know it’s cliche at this point, but a Tourist Trophy 2 is badly needed. I’ve played all the Ride games but they just don’t stack up.

    i'm having fun imagining a hypothetical doki doki panic for the gran turismo series now. a future where choro q hg1 gets rebadged, and like 20 years later polyphony is forced to acknowledge having giant coins on the back of your car is part of the GT canon

    I'm sorry but trying to insinuate that TT is some kind of super difficult game that is comparable to a game designed for more experienced players(the lost levels) is absolutely wrong on so many levels as TT is quite possibly the easiest, accessible and most forgiving motorcycle sim not just compared to today's titles but also it's contemporaries(see Super-Bikes: Riding Challenge also on PS2) and honestly it's way easier than even the proper GT games and in those you are on 4 Wheels. The whole premise of this video feels like a really misguided attempt at labelling TT as something it just isn't which and making a really stupid comparison that doesn't work all from the POV of someone who I guess hasn't ever played another motorcycle focused game before whether it is "sim" or "arcade-y"(I actually hate those terms myself but that's neither here nor there) so it just makes this whole thing feel like a mess because you seem like you just aren't used to this sort of thing at all though I should give credit where credit is due and that is that unlike many game reviews on YT nowadays you seem to actually get straight to the point and are attempting to keep things brief.
    Anyways what do I think of it? Childhood favorite and I still keep my PS2 just to play this every so often because I feel like the PS2 controller is probably one of the best controllers for a motorcycle sim due to it's pressure sensitive face buttons(I don't like triggers) and despite being way easier than any other motorcycle "sim" I always just like riding on it especially as someone who never got to experience the joy of motorcycles for the longest time due to anxiety ridden parents, the game just feels really nice to play that it overcomes it's stupidly slow A.I. and lack of real content. As a kid I played the various MotoGP games and they felt way worse even if they were way more fun when you got down to them due to A.I. that will actually attempt to race you but I didn't really get into that bit until quite recently and I haven't played OTHER more grounded motorcycle games until recently either and I am enjoying them so far, I suggest you look into Super-Bikes: Riding Challenge as it's quite a good game from what I've played it so far and I kinda feel weird for missing out on it for the longest time, if you're interested in playing more "grounded" motorcycle racing games!

    • @Sakurina
      @Sakurina  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I do not make any claims about how sim-like or arcade-like TT is in the video, nor do I make any points comparing it to other motorcycle games. I know I am not qualified to talk on those points (because you are correct, I haven’t played any others) which is why I simply didn’t. It didn’t feel necessary to do so in a video primarily interested in comparing it to the rest of a series I have played (including the wacky ones like HD, Concept, PSP, etc…)
      I also pretty clearly say in the video that I don’t think the game was intentionally designed as a Lost Levels-type experience for the GT series, but that was how it felt to me. It’s cool if people disagree, as we don’t all experience things the same way, but I would be lying if I didn’t portray how it felt to me.

    • @kalipferd1488
      @kalipferd1488 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Sakurina I guess but in no way is this game comparable to that simply because it never really throws curveballs at you and It's quite easy overall so I just don't get the comparison, sorry for being pedantic
      EDIT: I should also mention I wasn't talking about it's realism either as a main point but rather that it is honestly one of the most accessible "grounded" (I refuse to say the terms "arcade" or "simulation") motorcycle games especially with it's default settings and part of that is down to how the A.I. is actually piss easy even more so than any GT game, this is not a knock against TT but it is an aspect of it which makes your comparison feel odd to me

    • @shira_yone
      @shira_yone 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That's the point.
      The video is from a perspective of someone who hasn't played any other bike game but has played other GT games (as the video entailed, it's a "Lost level" for GT players). There's no problem with that, the only issue is just you dismissing the premise outright without considering how interesting it could be to hear.
      I play other bike games too, and it's interesting for me to see how other non-bike people perceive the game. I played Riding Spirits II and despite it being relatively just as accessible as TT, that game got the authentic bike game signature very delayed bike leaning controls (unlike TT which uses a more responsive steering); to me this proves even more that TT is designed with people new to motorbike racing in mind, and thus essentially designed by the devs as something that'll give a decent challenge to GT vets.
      Anyway the game I mentioned earlier, the Riding Spirits series, is practically the GT of motorbikes in gameplay loop _and_ bike variety. It have license tests, you start from zero buying slow bikes and compete in events (there's tournament too), you can buy upgrades for the bike in the shop, you can sell bikes, you get prize bikes from some events, lots of tracks both fictional and from real life (I especially appreciate the real Japanese mountain passes), and it have dirt tracks as well; it's a really charming game. If that sounds interesting to you both, do check it out.
