I remember Lyman Bostock very well. He was one of the earliest free agents, and he signed a then-huge contract with the California Angels. He had a lousy April, and wanted to give his first month's salary back because he felt he hadn't earned it. Gene Autry, the Angel's owner, refused, and Bostock went on to have a solid season, batting .296.
Bostock was a class act, all the way.
I believe he started the season by going 2-for-51.
I'll add two more incidents. During spring training in 1995, 30 year old pitcher, Dave Shotkoski (who never appeared in the majors), was shot and killed in an attempted robbery.. In 2018, one time major league infielders, 33 year old Luis Valbuena and Jose Castillo, age 37, were killed in a Venezuelan car crash caused by a gang of criminals who stole some of their belongings while the two were dying of their injuries.
FivePointVids did a great back story on Shotkowski.. he would been the oldest Rookie at the time. Very well liked by his peers.
Sad, I didn't know about this.
Gus Polidor and Tony Solaita are among those who should be added to the list. Thanks for mentioning Baird and Parrilla; I'd never heard of either of them. I vaguely remember Rod Craig as a Mariner in the early '80s.
Lyman Bostock, Jr. (his father played in the Negro Leagues) was on track to make the Hall of Fame, if he kept doing what he was doing. He was a big free agent signing by the Angels for 1978 but got off to a terrible start, and offered to donate his first month's salary to charity. Angels' owner Gene Autry encouraged him to stop pressing and trying so hard to earn the money, and to just keep playing in the way that earned him the big salary. Bostock hiked his batting average from below .180 to .294 on Sept. 23, and had 2 hits in his last game. I had the pleasure of seeing him play in person once, a couple of months before his death.
The cases of Bob Baird and Darryl Hamilton show that you should be careful in your choice of relationships, because the other person might be carrying some negative baggage.
So sad. Thank you for keeping their memory alive. 🕊️🙏❤️
I think Ivan Calderon rocked the Ganj.. Back in the day, a friend and I blew off work for a day game. We got there early and decided to go to the left field upper deck to puff a bowl. As we were walking back from the furthest reaches of that area, here comes Calderon in full uniform walking where the only thing you could be doing was puffin' weed. I said a "Hey, What's up" but I got the impression he didn't speak English much or was nervous. Me and my friend Dave still talk about that.
Lyman Bostock was the first person I thought of when I saw the title.
I lived just outside of Gary when he was murdered.Sad day for everyone involved.
*R.I.P*
😢 I love once upon a time its one of my favorite shows I didn't know that Lana's dad was a baseball player
🙏🏻RIP🕊️
I never heard of most of these men.
Sadly, Lyman Bostock just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
😢😢😢
Very interesting video. The only thing I would add would be to give the ages of all these people when they died, you did give some but not all. May they all rest in peace 🙏
According to a baseball source that I am getting these ages, Craig was 55. Baird 34. Bostock 27. Calderon 41. Barfield 52. Fox 34. Hamilton 50. Raymond 30.
Homeless Camp???!!! What was he doing there???
I don’t understand why ppl think they need to solve problems with a Gun or Knife???
The guy even said he fell in hard times..meaning he lost all his money
Some ex-MajorLeaguers unfortunately lost all their money and ended up homeless, can happen to anyone!!
Ya a homeless camp in LA, unheard of. You arm yrself becuz the others are armed
RIP🙏👍
Cool video,, how they live forever
You could add Yordano Ventura.
It was a terrible tragedy, but Ventura wasn't murdered.
How close were we to having David Ortiz on this list?
Robert Baird. That kills it. Career WAR -0.9 W- 0 L-4 ERA 7.25 Sad end to a sad career/
Was this AI narrated?
That was me speaking...👍
Was it WRITTEN by AI?
Why are so many baseball players murdered lol
