This video appears to concentrate on recent deaths. Otherwise, Ray Chapman would have been an obvious candidate for this video. He is widely believed to be the only player to have died as the result of an injury suffered in a game. This happened in 1920. Actually, a guy named Doc Powers died in the first decade of the 1900s after an injury in a game, too, but he actually passed away several weeks later, possibly of complications brought on by the standard of medical care of the time. Chapman did not die instantly after being beaned, but he passed away less than 24 hours later, probably as a direct result.
I did not know about Tommy Hanson. I was thinking about him the other day when I read about Tommy Hunter being in the Phillies training camp and realizing that he was not the Braves starter of a few years back. If I had known that Hanson was deceased, I would not have gotten them confused.
The 1976-1977 offseason was particularly tragic for MLB because four players and one manager who had been active in the 1976 season died: Mike Miley, Bob Moose, Danny Frisella, Danny Thompson, and manager Danny Murtaugh. Yes, three guys named Danny. Pittsburgh, who had lost Clemente four years earlier, got hit especially hard because Moose and Murtaugh were Pirates. Murtaugh and Thompson (who had leukemia) died of illnesses. The others died in vehicle accidents.

You could add Roberto Clemente as he hadn't retired before his death on December 31, 1972. Then there was Ray Chapman in 1920. Chapman was the shortstop for the Cleveland Indians at the time and was hit in the head by a pitch thrown by Yankees pitcher Carl Mays in a game in NY. Also, Thurman Munson, the Yankees catcher in the 1970s died in a plane crash while he was still playing.

Mike Darr was an outfielder for the Padres. Being from the east coast, l don't know much about his career. While on vacation in San Diego in April 2001 l saw him play against the Dodgers at the old Qualcomm Stadium and was very impressed with his performance. Knocked in 2 runs, made a great diving catch in center and scored the winning run on a close play at home in the 9th. Don't know how his career was overall, but he at least had that one memorable game, and l never forgot his name. He was killed in a car accident during Spring Training the following year, l believe only 26, which was also his uniform number. RIP Sir.
