Why when I go on speedrun.com, does Subway Surfers have the highest number of total players? It’s not even close. I bet most of you probably would’ve never guessed that. Let’s talk about it.

In Brasil, videogames and strong PCs are extremely expensive to most people, so free mobile games and old games are super popular here

As a brazilian, i can say that Brazilians started playing this game because of memes. It's normal for you to see memes with subway surfers gameplay in the background. Subway surfers has also become famous lately because of the accessibility . most of the people in Brazil play games only using their mobilr

I see a few people complaining about me not tackling the actual runs as much, and I do agree, I probably could've and maybe should've.
I guess I got purely obsessed with just the stats and reasons for the top games in general. I guess I did title it "why it's the most popular" for a reason. A lot of the growth stems from the "no coins" challenge which is popular on the tiktok landscape I mentioned. Unlike normal boards trying to complete a goal as fast as possible, this category leaderboard focuses on surviving the longest possible without grabbing a single coin.

I must have been living under a rock for the last few months, because I had never even noticed Subway Surfers was such a popular speedgame!
So, about the video now: everything was really well-explained and well-edited. The little bits of humo(u)r in between were perfect and didn't draw too much attention to themselves.
If there's one negative thing I have to say, it's that the Minecraft portion of the video felt a little long considering it wasn't the main topic of the video. I get you put it in though, and this is really just a personal nitpick.
    Nice stuff!

As one of the mods of subway surfers sr.c i can say that the community that lasted of this game, are the people that still play it since the nocoins trend started, unfortunately, some mods are quitting because it got kinda boring XD, and people are starting to steal money from random people on tiktok lives, by stealing other people's runs and streaming it on tiktok (even friends of mine decided to join this side of the community). This game tends to get less popular more and more with each passing month, to the point where you can only get into the top 10 with a 17 minute run, i mean, someone played subway surfers whitout collecting coins for 41 minutes straight, i mean, that's insane for a game where the objective was to see how long you can survive. And about the video, you're completely right, this game only got popular in sr.c because of the tiktok nocoins trend, and some brazilian people got really encouraged to dominate the top 10. Great video 10/10.

Interesting topic, but I was a bit disappointed that the speedruns themselves weren't really talked about.
How competitive is the game, meaning how often are there new record holders? Are the scores pretty much maxed out or are new records substantially better? Are there glitches being used? New tricks found?
When I saw the title of the video, I thought that these factors might play a role in a large speed running scene. Maybe they don't, but maybe they do... I still don't know because the video doesn't talk about these aspects at all.
This comment isn't meant to be rude, by the way! I'd love a "sequel" to this video that tackles these questions.

Just so you are all aware:
    Game gets popular with kids.
Kids grow up and the game loses its main player base as it was mostly a fad.
Kid goes from being a teenager to entering their 20s
Gets nostalgic for content from their youth. Gets 'popular' again.
Every huge game has had this projectory pretty much. In fact I've started playing OW again just because I feel a strong sense of nostalgia for it.
Games never really *die* because there is a hardcore player base to every game. Especially when it comes to 'social' games as you obtain what's called 'social currency' which is essentially a nicer way of saying "You have friends only on habbo hotel/roblox and if you leave the game you leave all the money, time and energy you spent on that game behind"
Even though people say World of Warcraft is 'dead' it will never fully die because there are people who want nothing more than to quit the game but if they quit they leave behind literal years of energy they have spent on a single project.
But yeah, a lot of games become popular again simply through ironic nostalgia. Games like Amongus remain popular because the irony was set from the beginning.

Not gonna lie, I was not impressed with this video all too much.
    1. The whole Minecraft tangent at the beginning was not necessary, and you probably could've summarized it in a few sentences. I really don't see how it was needed.
    2. You brought up the fact that Subway Surfers is on various devices, but you didn't bring up the fact that it's free, which I think is kind of important, as that's probably one of the biggest reasons why it's blown up.
3.I really think you could've spent some time (maybe to replace the Minecraft section) about how Subway Surfers speedrunning actually works? This is the question I thought would be answered by the video, but even after watching it, I'm still not to sure what differentiates a Subway Surfers speedrun from a normal playthrough. I've seen other people share this confusion.

the point here , in the comparison to minecraft, n64 supermario and switch's Odessey is to show that there are simple, free and short games we play, me especially, that s why he mentioned the farmington discord, bc the big games dont always pull all speedrunners, we small community of the goofy small games we play, are what storster wanted to show. in short heres whats been said : no to minecraft and mario games, even thought its their plays who work the hardest, tehre is also players that play all kind of small games and the community isnt smaller that for big-games

@@gunstar420 What I'm saying is that I feel how the game is speedrun is a less obvious reason for its success than the reasons mentioned in the video (I think most knew it had something to do with memes).
The video advertises itself as explaining to outsiders what makes Subway Surfers a popular speedrun game. And though it explains the viral/meme side of it, it doesn't explain how the game is actuall speedrun in the first place, which is what I feel the actual confusing part is.
