- Time to ditch the crappy stock tyres on the KLR 650 and put some real rubber on. I've chosen the Bridgestone AX41's, an off road biased adventure tyre.

Great job... just think about fixing a flat on the side of the road or the trail... if you think you're sweating now... you haven't sweated yet. I generally take my tools that use to change my tire along with extra tubes and a small mat to lay my tire on while I'm changing the tube out. As to the balancing, I run counteract beads about 2 oz in both front and rear and I have not had an issue in fact, I run the beads in all my motorcycle tires.
Good job man!!! I changed mine out the first week I owned the 2022 KLR650. Those stock tires are ok for pavement, but nothing else. You did the right thing by changing those tires.

I know what you mean. I had a rear bag on an old Tuono, man was it handy. Might have to do something similar on the KLR
@@onthebackwheel You can easily fit 4 bags of groceries in it.
Loosen up the nuts on the valves so they can move (run them at least 1/2 way up the stem). That will 1, keep the valve from ripping if it moves. 2. Show you that your tire is slipping on the rim as the valve will be leaned in one direction.
If you never air down probably tire movement will not be a problem but if you air down it very well could spin on the rim. The valve movement will let you know and then you could get some rim locks.

nNce job and good looking tires. I have a new set sitting in my garage waiting for a bit more wear on the stock tires. I have never done tires beyond bicycle tires. I have to say I am semi dreading the experience but it will be invaluable if I ever have to fix a flat in the field.
It's certainly good to keep the skills up, even more so if you haven't done it before. Next time I'll be taking advantage of free fitting though 😜
I also put the AX 41 on my 2022 KLR. I road about 500 miles at Death Valley Ca and it is extremely rocky there and sharp volcanic rocks too. It really took a toll on them chunking out the rear and taking off the square leading edge on some areas of the tire mostly the mid area. The tires still work well on pavement both on the straights and cornering too. I also noticed in deep sand areas they worked like crap. Could be do to the KLR being heavy in the front. On regular harder packed dirt they work very well and over all make a decent 50/50 tire. If I was to do it over again I would buy some cheaper tires like maybe the Tusk Tires for the very rocky terrain and save the AX 41 for something less extreme. Getting the tire valve in those tires and also installing the rear wheel is a bit of a bitch isn't it. I think I learned a lesson on both and it will be easier next time.
That valve! I actually cut out that footage, but can confirm it was a pain in the ass. I'll watch for chunking, it can get pretty rocky where I ride

All I could get my hands on was a 606S for the front and im trying to get hold of a back tyre. I can't go on the local fire trails with the standard tyre 🤣
Stock is terrible ATM! Just get out there mate and enjoy the power slides 😉😂
All I know is I ride my bike and if I have to have new tires every six weeks that'll be unacceptable.either I find some tires that will go some distance or the kor will have to go it's really that simple no matter how much I like the bike.available tires longevity, one more thing to consider before buying a new bike.
That was painful. Sorry if I sound critical but,,, I have enjoyed watching your stuff from your KLX250 days. And loved the way you pushed the KLR and took it where no KLR should go. Keep it up. PS did you do a final thought on the "Airbox + Pipe" mod ??
Mate you are telling me, been a long time since I changed tyres. I talked about the airbox and pipe in a mod video, but not a proper round up. I'll have to do one!
@@onthebackwheel In the same boat a few months or so ago (after 30yr) and managed to pinch the tube. I was keen to see if the Pipe and Air box made a difference.
After 30yr of not riding I did some homework and picked the KLX250s as a good re-entry point to hit the dirt again (while I still can, sort of), found a 2015 with 3.5K on the clock. Cleaned it up, tuned the carbi as best it can be without Pipe or KDX snorkel. Did a charity thing on Fraser Island (Fraser Island did Me). And then found a 2010 model from a farm out west, with a 300cc motor, full Staintune pipe and header and the top of the air box missing. What a huge difference. I hope to get a few years before I might need to retire to a KLR. Cheers

Good day mate. I’m I have a 2022 klr650 same as yours I’m having issues reinstalling my rear wheel. I didn’t take a picture before hand my question..is there a spacer on the left side if so does it go between the swing arm and the wheel? It is a very tight fit I can’t seem to reinstall..? If you have any suggestions thank you.
Yeah mate there's a spacer on both sides. It's fiddly but you'll get there with persistence!
Follow-up, did you use the same tubes you started with? Are they basically reusable until they are damaged?
Yep I reused them, they looked new still 👊

Thanks mate. Yes I chose these specifically. I was keen to try them and perhaps more importantly, they were in stock! These are 50/50 tyres, maybe even 60/40. I did a first ride review with them, check it out for further thoughts
I apologise if you mentioned it, how many kms did you get from the rear?
I changed it at 2200km, but it was stuffed at 1800

Love your trail riding videos, and the issues you ran into look forward to seeing if your new tires improve your experience. I am thinking of getting one of these bikes, and wanted to ask; is abs worth it? Was reading somewhere that the brakes are not strong enough to lock up anyway (on the road); but not sure if you can believe that, Do you have any feedback on this?
Gday mate, I did a video on the brakes, make sure you check it out. My choice of KLR would be the base model with no ABS. If you are doing more road work and not as much off road, the Adventure model with ABS would be a good choice
@@onthebackwheel Thanks for the feedback. Probably will be doing mostly commuting to work, to save gas, so thinking maybe best to go for ABS. Hi . Nice video , do you think 140/80/17 it fit on the klr650 2022?
It can depending on the tyre. I wouldn't recommend it though, the KLR needs all the help it can get engine wise and the larger tyre weighs more
It's probably a stupid question , what happens if don't balance the wheel ??
It can cause vibrations at higher speeds. It's pretty easy just to give it a quick go and see if it's close to balanced

How are the tyres going now you have had them on for a time.?
The rear is pretty well bald after 2000kms. The front is still going strong and has plenty of life. The road performance is great, off road they are ok for basic terrain, anything wet terrible
Man, I ordered the Anakee wild tire's for my new KLR, I got rear tire and put on but the front tire was on national back order, Michelin had no ETA on the front, so I got the Bridgestone AX41 front tire and put on, let me warn you the AX41 front tire is a real squirrely SOB until you get the little tities worn off then it's fine !
On my ride to work yesterday I thought the same!

Very minor, just the edge of the rear rim in 2 spots

Stock tubes still. I've got some heavy duty ones that came with the tyres for when the time comes
Order a bead-buddy. Worth its weight in gold and will save you many curse words.
I've thought about it. I'll probably get a shop with free fitting to do them next time, so unless I get one super cheap, hard to justify ATM
@@onthebackwheel I may be speaking American and your understanding in Australian. 😂😂 A bead-buddy is usually around $12 US and fits it your motorcycle tool kit. It holds the tire on the rim so the bead doesn't keep popping off when you're working your way around the rim with your spoons. Simple idea and works great.
