I came to make the same comment, cracking car choice for long road trips in a big place like Australia. Surely one of the best cruising cars ever made and that Seiko Presage is a perfect, classy fit.

    “Big Lex”
Nice, your appreciation for Japanese engineering goes further than watches alone.
Quite refreshing to see someone who holds on to a car instead of wanting the newest model and pay trough the nose for it. 👍
I drive a BMW E39 525i touring, which will celebrate its 20th birthday this June.🙂

Well, you knock the pants off of me when it comes to light weight. My 4 lightweight mechanicals are a Zelos Comet, Vostok Amphibia (on leather! oops), Seiko Alpinist, and Tissot Gentleman on leather. Runs from 74.6gm to 86.1gm. (But since I'm staying home, I'm not too concerned.) ;)
    Enjoy the trip!!

Fun selection, Jody! Made me weigh all the watches in my small collection... hehe. Then I realized... without me knowing it, I also bring the lightest pieces when traveling. I guess it's because I like traveling light, but also bring only 1 or 2 pieces that will fit the purpose of my trip.

Geeze. I continue to be blown away by your creativity. I think you have definitely found your calling as a TH-camr! Really enjoyed everything about this video. I would love it if you posted each watches’ TTW (total time on wrist) from the beginning to the end of the trip on a future video. My guess would be 70% Formex and 10% each for the other three. Even the lowly mod should get some love. Merci!

That jellyfish is something else! Interesting concept, made me look at my watches and what I wear on long trips. Turns out weight means nothing but being a chrono does! Straton Speciale, Seiko Pogue or Seiko Seitona are the goto. The Pogue is the watch if driving my midlife crisis car.

Thanks for sending me down another rabbit hole Jody 😂 I also have a big roadtrip coming up in the summer (~1500km one way) but until now I didn't realise that I need the lightest possible watch for the drive😂
    I modified some criteria though.
    1) I actually prefer quartz for this purpose because of the reliability, accuracy and 'grab and go' factor. I will take at least one automatic with me but that's to wear at the destination.
    2) It has to be super easy to read, I don't wanna take my hands off the wheel and stare at the watch for ages to figure out the time. (Of course there is a clock on the dashboard but let's just ignore that fact 😂)
    3) Easily adjustable hour hand. It's not a must, but an advantage as I will enter a different time zone.
At the moment I'm looking at
    1) a GA-B2100 (the yellow one because of the better legibility, the only watch that ticks all the boxes. I would possibly swap the bezel and strap to the black one for a more understated look.)
    2) one of those Lorus titanium field style watches
    3) my Luminox (a bit boring though as I have it already. I clearly need a new watch for this purpose, right?😂)
On a separate note, I love your car. I always fancied one of those. Just another proof of your excellent taste.

  • @rangersmith4652
    @rangersmith4652 ปีที่แล้ว +2

First criterion for travel watches is they have to be quartz so I can set them before depart (but they probably don't need it) and be done with it. That said, my favorite driving or flying watch is my G-Shock DW5600E-1V, which weighs almost nothing, is indestructible, and has any function I might need. When I travel I'm going to potentially vary my wardrobe from a suit or tuxedo to jeans and a polo to cycling lycra, so I need to support all of those. The other three watches would be my Eco-Drive titanium chronograph for casual, my Garmin Forerunner 245 for sports, and my vintage Seiko SQ in stainless for dress. If I decide to sneak in a fifth it will be a dive watch, my Eco-Drive Promaster. Yeah, quartz for travel, every time.

My goto long roadtrip watch while driving is my Speedmaster, so I don't feel bad about an auto not getting any exercise, and I've used the chrono function a time or two. I recently picked up a solar chrono, though, so maybe it'll get some wheel time in the future. The ones in the luggage vary according to the destination. I like all of your choices, aside from that transparent abomination. Safe travels.

My latest Jomashop special arrived yesterday. 7 days door to door from Brooklyn to the UK. It makes my version of Jody's list though it's quartz. Tissot Tradition 5.5 only 92gms on a stainless bracelet. To handle it is really balanced as if the watch itself weights the same as a similar sized section of bracelet. 39mm is smaller than I usually go but a very slim bezel so looks bigger.

I can't believe it myself that after a ten year watch loving journey, I bought my first Seiko. It is a Presage, although a different model than yours and it is beautiful. Changed the original NATO strap for a better one and it is on my wrist for a week already. That says something as my usual wrist time is usually two days. Obviously I can dream about a couple of great but expensive Seikos but the Presage line is an excellent choice.

Good video. That Formex is really nice. I'm not familiar with that brand, but I'll check them out! Interestingly, I drive around a lot for work and my #1 work watch is a Seiko Presage Cocktail time "Mockingbird". Basically, the same as your watch but with an Emerald green dial. I find it very comfortable, light on the wrist and it easily slips under jackets and shirts in the cooler weather. Looks good in work situations but isn't so expensive I'm worried about damaging it. Great watch.

I don't know what's happened to modern humans, I hear comment about "chunky" and "heavy" watches. I can honestly say that in 65 years of constant wearing a watch, I've never noticed that I've had a watch on my wrist. Like wearing a wedding ring or my "dog tags", they are just there. I mean, are most people even aware they have underwear on?
