One huge value in these is checking your car BEFORE going to a mechanic. A trustworthy shop will not make up stuff, and you can ask smarter questions. An untrustworthy shop may tell you things that are not a problem. But you now know the difference. Just don't leave your OBD in the car, to warn them.

great review and podcast. do you turn the car on to auxillary before pluggilng into the port. And to check engine light do you run the car ie engine on. The manuyal says plug into port and then start engine. Most of the other OBD2 I have used is to pludl lin first and then turn only to auxillary but not on. Or does it make a difference
If you take your car to like Napa or Orilleys, they will hook up their code reader to your car and tell you the codes for free. Now I'm not 100% but I think the reason the mechanic shops charge like 50-100 bucks for the code reading is because their readers are like $4,000 or more and can give alot more information on the code and the issue. Like my car said (Code: 90171) "Fuel System Too Lean" which means either too much air is getting in or not enough fuel is getting in and the air to fuel mixture is not right but there is like around 7 possible reasons that could cause that and with a macanics shops super advanced $4,000 code reader it can pinpoint whats causing that code alot better than just getting the code and having to guess which one of the 7 potentially reasons is the one causing it with the other cheaper readers. So i always just take it to like orileys and have them run the codes for me for free and if its something that could only be caused by 1 or maybe 2 things then im good to go but in a certain situation like I explained above where there is like 7 or more possible reasons, its just better to pay the 50 to 100 bucks and get a way better idea what it is causing the code instead of having to guess through the multiple possible reasons

My car slipped into “limp mode”. I was told that I would need to run diagnostic on it. I would usually do this at the part store but they said they won’t do it due to this covid stuff. They told me to buy one of these things, which I did. I think it’s the same one you feature in your video. I had no idea how to even hook it up. I don’t have a USB port on my car. Or I couldn’t find it at least. I don’t know. I’m just fed up. I can work on older cars all day long but these computer things go over my head. Maybe I’m just an idiot. Thanks for the tips.
It all depends on what you need a scanner to do. For the most part, any scanner under $100 will read your code and give an idea of the problem. I like this one because you get live readings and a graph.

This video could have been a lot better had you explained where you were going while you were going through the functions ! You kept saying things like let's go here, let's check this etc without saying where you were going. For someone not familiar with using a OBD2 scanner they will get lost with your instructions. I suggest everyone read the manual !

No, your not, they make this new car very hard to work on.
The hookups are usually under the steering wheel by your leg area. Or just TH-cam your vehicle make n model n ask for the diagnostics hookup.

Yes it will.
A check gauges light means just that.... Look at your gauges, something is wrong at one of them. You don't need a scanner to look at your gauges.
