    paper is such a cheap and easy way to make bird toys! Archie loves ripping it up!

    thank you for the wonderful bird toy ideas!! I've been looking around for DIY bird toys since my Quaker gets bored very easily and tends to over-preen as a result, and these are just amazing!! He is now a huge fan of the shooting star and paper accordion, which is great for me because I spent all of middle school making those lol! I've tried putting treats in the stars too but he's so happy just ripping up the paper that he hasn't even noticed yet 😂 thank you again for sharing with us!!!

  • @HoneyBear36

    These are actually great! My Quaker has been chewing his large feathers off and I think this might be the ticket to help. He loves shredding paper and things but he’s scared of bird toys so I think this will be the perfect middle ground that won’t freak him out more! 🙏 thank you

      If he’s feather plucking he needs better toys and you need to take him out of his cage more

    • @HoneyBear36
      @HoneyBear36 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I hold him lots (most of the day while I work) he’s TERRIFIED of new toys which is why I’m thinking the paper will be better. He’s had a toy in his cage for months and is finally warming up to it in the last week or so.

    • @mehere8038

      @@HoneyBear36 My plucker is obsessed with her drip water bottle & salt lick & sometimes her cuttlefish that I've soaked in salt water too. Some pluckers like ropes they can preen, mine occasionality does this too, but whenever she's feeling stressed, it's her salt lick then the ball in the drip water bottle that seems to comfort her & kinda act like a "toy" to her. Drip water bottle is outside the cage with only the dripper bit inside it. If yours likes paper shredding though I say go for it with that! Make as many paper toys as you can :) Mine won't shred, she actually abuses her cagemate if he dares shred anything in the cage (really funny to watch actually, if I hang a cord with paper threaded back & forwards through it, he'll enjoy shredding it, she'll respond by screaming at him not to & if he continues, she'll approach him & nip him if needbe to make him stop. Meanwhile he'll grab the toy & intentionally swing it at her to try to hit her if she approaches him. Note the cage door in my set up is permanently open, so either of them can leave the cage & climb onto the roof or any of the perches on the outside of the cage if there's any serious fight between the pair of them, they're not trapped in there together)

    Hello I have a question, I’m getting a bird for the first time tomarrow and I’m quite sceptical of trusting myself with the rubbing alcohol (bcuz the research I’ve made has made it very clear that fumes are deadly for smaller birds such as cockatiels). I’m wondering if I can dye the pepper any either way? Such as processing lettuce and adding water to it, then straining to get green for example. Is this an okay alternative or will it make my bird want to eat it more because of the smell etc?

    • @carolanne7755
      @carolanne7755 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mehere8038 Hi I have got him or her taking a treat out of my fingers but I can’t get near the bird with the stick yet. Do I just keep trying to get it to step on my hand? It won’t have anything to do with the stick and clicker yet. Thanks for your help

    • @mehere8038
      @mehere8038 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@carolanne7755 I'd still do the stick first personally, but I'm coming from a place of having a rescue bird with severe "learned helplessness". I suggest looking that up & making sure there's no potential yours may be developing that too, hopefully it's not, but best to be sure, cause I can tell you mine is a HUGE mess emotionally because of it. She arrived doing anything I wanted, then once back in her cage would just rock & pluck & cry for hours.
      Thing about the stick is it's teaching the bird it has a choice & if it chooses to do what you're asking, it gets rewarded for it, but if it chooses not to, that's ok too & that makes for much better & faster training further down the track.
      I'd get a variety of sticks, chopsticks of different colours, pencils of different colours etc etc & put them on or in the cage & leave them there for at least a few days & let your bird play with & choose which one it likes & then use that.
      Clickers tend to be harder with some birds, but if your bird is already comfortably taking treats from your hand, then just click as s/he does so, while also giving verbal praise & it will very quickly associate the clicker noise with positives. Hold the clicker well away to start with, under stuff to muffle the sound if needbe due to fear of the noise.
      You don't need to clicker train, but it can be useful, so if your bird is fully comfortable with the taking the treat from your hand, you may as well get it comfortable with the clicker while doing so, as that's a really easy "trick" it's learning through training & any "trick" that's learnt means you & your bird have added a clear communication into your relationship & that's a really good thing & will benefit your relationship into the future. If your bird's not truly comfortable taking the treat from your hand, don't add the clicker until it is.
      I found the clicker training really useful with one of mine who refused to step up with BOTH feet, doing only one for 5 months of daily training! (this is my learned helplessness emotional mess one). I clicker trained her & then I tried the hand on the end of the perch to "shimmy" onto instead of stepping onto (which is much easier for them when learning step up) & when I FINALLY got her to do her second foot on that, I could clicker & reward, but verbal praise & treats couldn't work in that setting, cause she was only doing the second foot for a split second before putting it back onto the perch, so rewards or praise were reinforcing her stepping back onto the perch due to timing to get them to her. Next I put my hand between 2 perches & had her step across it to get to the second perch & treat & she eventually did, but VERY fast, but every so often she'd put both feet onto my hand in the process & those would get a click & big treat, while 1 foot just got a small treat. That precision of the clicker can be useful. I don't use the clicker all the time, but I do enough that they know what it is & that it means they did something good (which was funny when I had a timer that had a similar sound & both my birds reacted to it as if it was a clicker & wanted a treat lol).
      So I'd just keep doing the treats from your hand & add verbal reinforcement to that as well & clicker if your bird's really comfortable & let your bird get comfortable with sticks & choose one it likes, then start holding the stick in/near your hand while treating & then move onto touch the stick before the treat's available. I personally have lorikeets, so the easiest treat is sweet liquids in a syringe, so mine had the syringe & stick next to each other & they could grab & lick at the syringe, but liquid only came out after they'd touch the stick. After a bit of licking of the treat, it would stop again & they'd have to touch the stick to turn it back on. They figured it out VERY quickly :)) I had to cover most of my stick with a different coloured tape, so as to indicate only the end part was touchable, cause I had 2 birds grabbing at different ends of it, which wasn't very helpful!

    Thanks :) My boy's FINALLY started to actually touch toiletpaper roll strip balls to retrieve the treats from inside them, so hopefully soon he'll be ready for these sorts of toys too. Time to start making & leaving around for him to become familiar with.
    Question, why the alcohol? Is that to make it absorb into the paper? I get migraines from alcohol fumes (which is fun with covid!) So I can't really do that, wondering if just water will work or if there's any other possible ideas (other than just plain paper of course)
    Also, on the shooting star, I saw this on another video, that user actually inserted the treat after making the knot bit & before folding the tail around, which seems to work (except that mine won't touch them, cause they can't see the treat inside it)
    Anyway, great video, as always, thanks :)

    I have a question! Do birds enjoy colored or colorful paper? Or is it just pleasing to our eyes? (I'm asking this so that I know if can just skip this coloring it altogether 😅)

      For the most part colour doesn't really matter but it depends on the bird, some birds really like certain colours and hate others. I'm just skipping this step personally.

      What does your bird eat in the wild? If it eats colourful foods & has colourful mates, it will likely love colourful toys. Birds can see UV too, so even more colour variety than humans.
      Depends on the species & then personal preference of the bird whether it will like colourful stuff or not though, if it's a colourful bird, with a colourful diet, it will usually want colourful toys
