  • A day after devastating earthquakes hit Turkey and Syria, drone footage flew over cities with collapsed buildings and where rescue efforts were underway as the death toll passed 5,000.
Areas in Turkey and Syria devastated by earthquakes may need years to recover from the destruction, the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) said on Tuesday.
Hatay, which borders northwest Syria, is the worst-hit province in Turkey with at least 872 people killed during the earthquake. In Hatay alone, more than 1,200 buildings have been destroyed.

I live in Turkey. I wanted to watch the news abroad to see how the news about the earthquake resonated in other countries around the world. And my hope for humanity was rekindled. On behalf of the people of my country, I thank you all for your good wishes. When I saw these good wishes about my country in the comments, I wanted to give some more detailed information to good people in different parts of the world. Writing may also reduce my stress a little bit.
First of all, me and my relatives live in an area close to Istanbul, far from the earthquake zone, we are safe. But while thousands of people are under the rubble and battling the freezing cold, I am now feeling ashamed and guilty of being in my warm and safe home. But unfortunately we can't do anything but send help. Some roads leading to the earthquake area are fragmented due to the earthquake and the traffic density at the entrances of the region is very high. For now, we are not going to that area so that professional rescue teams and rescue vehicles can go before us. Everyone across the country is in mourning and worried about the earthquake zone.
Unfortunately, there is a level of destruction that no state can be prepared for. An example for better understanding; The earthquake produced an energy equal to that of the largest bomb ever tested in the world. And it happened in a location where millions of people live densely. (2 times 9 hours apart) The earthquake victims and the teams that wanted to save them encountered the second earthquake before they could get over the shock of the first earthquake.
So far, it has been announced that 4544 people have died. (This is the number of deaths yet determined. Unfortunately, it is thought that there are tens of thousands of people under the rubble. Because the earthquake occurred at an hour when everyone was asleep.) There are tens of thousands of injured, but unfortunately, there are also life-threatening ones among the injured. Cold-induced hypothermia, limb loss, etc. complications occur. In such a chaotic environment, all Turkish people put aside their perspectives on the world and became one punch to help earthquake survivors who were fighting both the debris and the freezing cold. All opposing views, politics, all fanaticism are disabled. There is only one common denominator, and that is humanity.
Aid is collected in all the provinces that were not damaged in the earthquake, and everyone, regardless of the rich or poor, is trying to help the earthquake victims by forcing all the conditions. Everyone donates clothes, blankets, basic foodstuffs, generators, diapers. Parcels and sacks are carried from hand to hand at the collection points in the district centers, just like a chain. After the collected donations are categorized, they are loaded onto the trucks. It is sent to the earthquake zone. Rescuers are making a superhuman effort, but unfortunately, hopes are dwindling due to the cold.
On behalf of my country, I thank Azerbaijan, Spain, Russia, Japan, Pakistan, England, Malaysia, Germany, India, Bulgaria, France, China and many other countries and their peoples.

If a portion of structures would better hold up against earthquakes, the buildings which did crumble would be far less, meaning that emergency services would be able to focus on this catastrophe at a much smaller scale. Its a question of resource, not immunity.

Even though a couple of days earlier a powerful earthquake in Iran caused lots of damages and no nation actually offered relief help and Iran used its own relief resources to help the victims, still iran send relief aid to turkey and syria to help. This regions continues to suffer... its truly sad. Only thing people can do is re-build, and force higher standards for building living apartments. Clearly, some of the building standards were too low for earthquake prone areas.

Rebar isn't that expensive, but the failure of all these buildings in exactly the same way: shift and then slide, tells me the use of rebar isn't in the plans here. In an earthquake prone area? Rebar ISN'T that expensive; it's made from junk steel like old cars and dirty iron.

I trust you have not been to places like this. There is not the money to build these to that level of construction quality. It is simply a non starter of a conversation. They will be rebuilt to the same standards with perhaps some rebar instead of just columns and loose bricks.
