Koko Responds to a Sad Movie

  • Koko watches intently a DVD movie on her TV that she has seen several times before. It is called Tea with Mussolini. When it comes to a sad part, where the boy has to say goodbye to all of his relatives and waves goodbye on the train, Koko turns away from the TV. She then proceeds to sign: "Frown, sad, cry, bad, trouble, mother and Koko-love." Her eyes also look very watery. (Gorillas cry too.)
Lesson: There is mounting scientific evidence that great apes can feel empathy for others. This example points to the possibility that gorillas, in particular, may also be able to empathize with fictional human characters portrayed by actors-or at least be moved by them

It's amazing, isn't it? I'm guessing she could read the body language and behaviour of the actors and maybe understand their tone. So she recognised that the woman was a mother because of they way she treated the child. I wish we had more footage of Koko to better understand it.

Koko had a deep love for babies, sad that she never had one of her own. She "adopted" many kittens and treated them so gently.
I used to have a very sweet dog who had strong maternal instincts like that. I called her "mama dog", though she never had puppies.
I raise goats, and she loved the babies and acted like they were hers. Baby goats are up and walking right after birth, and climbing on things the next day. This dog would worry and whine when the baby goats would climb on rocks because she was afraid they would fall, and was always herding them to "safety".
Often, the real mama goat would wander off to eat weeds, leaving Annie dog in charge as the babysitter! It was so sweet how she trusted her with her babies.
Oh, and Annie was half pit-bull. We got her to be a guard dog on the ranch, but she was a gentle sweetheart. She "wouldn't bite a biscuit" as my mama used to say.

What amazes me is the fact so many people are blind to the emotional intelligence many animals have. People that think dogs don't have feelings? Or cats or birds? Ya they aren't building machines and flying to the moon but they have complicated social interactions easily comparable to humans. Some humans just don't pay attention.

Pretty sure she's talkin about her mother and what little memory she may have of her. This saying goodbye scene shows separation from one's family and she is smart enough to compare the two experiences.she is probably not aware that these people are acting she just sees the separation of a child from its mother which is always a sad thing but when you think about the fact that she was separated from her "tribe", then her sadness and inability to view THIS sadness speaks volumes about the complexityof animals inner emotions. Not just Gorillaz but all animals have a range of emotions. Are we not just furless animals?!

Very interesting perspective, and I think it’s very possibly correct! As smart as Koko was, I assume that there was more family that she wanted than a child of her own. The community of gorilla can not ever be fully understood by man, as the community of human can never be fully understood by gorilla. We are quite prideful in the idea that we can benefit another species by studying it in OUR community. If we really want to understand gorilla than the approach(already in use by many respectful researchers) slowly introducing researchers into a gorilla community(obviously more dangerous for the researchers) We were very lucky that Koko blessed us with her kindness even though we imposed a reality upon her that must have caused a lot of confusion(and all the emotions associated with confusion). Many gorillas would rip someone apart, even if they normally were very kind. I wouldn’t be surprised if much footage was either destroyed or simply not taken of the moments that confusion and frustration with an inconceivable world thrust upon her became too much. It’s obvious that Koko was an extraordinary gorilla. It’s obvious that Koko was a very intelligent gorilla. It’s obvious that Koko was a very loving gorilla(including towards her captors) there is a name for this.... can’t remember, when the captive becomes sympathetic towards its captors... Koko was a gorilla that made the best of a very sad situation. Gorillas are not here for our entertainment, simply put.

Joshua Harrison it’s called Stockholm Syndrome. I’m not sure that this is the case with Koko, when you think about it, it’s a fairly unnatural thing to do to keep any animal. What I feel saddest about is that she really longed to have a child, and despite trying her with two mates, they weren’t interested and Koko never got her baby. She did have kittens tho. Maybe it was a good thing that she didn’t breed. One of the partners they brought her was Michael, and he was an extraordinary artist.

To those complaining of her being in a "scruffy office" Koko lived a very full and happy life with lots of love. She also had a very large piece of land dedicated to her running around. To her, living with her "troop" was the humans that spoke with her daily, taught her to speak their language and loved her endlessly. We are primates just like them, so its no different. They have tried taking her to be with other Gorillas but she apparently got bullied and hated it. She longed to be with her real troop, her real "mother" the human that raised her.
In the end, there is a video of her where she knows shes a gorilla but she considers the humans in her "troop" as family.

Her caretaker says that Koko views herself as being really important and has a huge ego problem. We don't know if she realizes she's been gone from her family but it's clear she doesn't care. She realizes she's a big deal and is cocky about it.

koko might actually identify with the child in this scene more than the mother. it might remind her of when she was separated from her own mother.
of course she might also be thinking about her pet cat that ran away. who knows. but its amazing that she feels empathy the same way we do.

it astonishes me that people think coddling of any sort is doing right by anyone/any animal. Koko wouldn't have developed empathy and emotional depth to the degree that she has had she been sheltered from experiencing complex emotions and learning how to deal with them, which is literally presented in the video when she turned around. imagine if her first reaction wasn't to just turn around though. if she hadn't developed her emotions and self discipline she would react just as any other animal would to negative emotions. and believe me, you wouldn't see thst shit on TH-cam.
