  • A video showing how to replace the fuel filter, strainer, and the low fuel sensor on a 2007 Sportster XL1200C. If doing it over, I'd use zip ties inside of the hose clamp.

      Hi, I don't quite follow your question. The strainer is the part I removed at 16:30. The new one gets pushed on and then the strainer gets bent 90゚and is clamped or zip tied to the unit as you can see at 17:00.

      BluesriderDF hey there thanks for getting back to me. Ok after I pulled the fuel pump out , it was and still is rusted bad so I know I’ll have to get a new one , but what I was asking is I saw 2 Allen head screws well at least I think it is ! 🤷‍♀️ but I saw you just pull it off , at 1600 - 1603 is that you did ? I have a 2008 Sportster . And where did you order your parts ? I’m looking J&P Cycle and they have the pump for $69 at Harley they want almost $300 and the fuel filter $90 it’s like wow I wonder if it got gold made in it ! 🤦‍♀️🧐 I apologize what all the questions, I’m trying to learn how to do it myself ! Again thanks for all your help and sharing your video ! You have a great day !

      @@veronicastewart1959 The clamps on the fuel filter kit I bought were too large. The kit was from Drag Specialties. I know Harley parts are expensive, but the fitment is correct. Sometimes aftermarket parts can be a bargain that work out well but other times they can disappoint. Read the reviews before you buy. There must have been a lot of condensation in the tank to rust that bad.

    Hey thanks for the video. Just curious, what lead to you deciding to replace the fuel pump? I am about 75 percent sure I need a fuel pump, but just wanted to find out what you experienced before I go drop a hundred and fifty bucks.

    • @bluesriderDF
      @bluesriderDF  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't replace the pump, I replaced the filter (which consists of a cartridge filter and an intake screen), and I also replaced the fuel level sensor. The low fuel light on my speedo would come on and off at random intervals for the last year, and it seems the sensor is a common failure item on these bikes.

    Question to you sir... My fuel pump of my Iron 883 2014 is jammed apparently... And the Harley folks in India want to replace it... Is the manual you are referring to publicly available. Even if I screw that up, I will still have to get a new part.. Which you have already mentioned.. No matter which country... Harley's part is silly expensive.. So I want to try to fix it on my own before I succumb to the price of a replacement part..

    In the manuals parts breakout picture of the gasket, if you look at the nubs on the outside and inside of the gasket you will see the tapered end of those nubs (the rounded end) goes down just like you have it and the bigger (flat end) of the nubs goes up, again, just like you have it. I use the same kind of hose (comes coiled up and does not want to be straight) for draining my gas too. But what I do is take a steel coat hanger and straighten it out and cut a piece a few inches longer than the distance between the front of the gas cap and the smallest part of the gas tank (the seat end). I stick that into the hose as far as I can put it in (even with the end that goes into the tank). This makes the hose straight and allows you to put it into the very back corner of the tank, but does not interfere with the siphon flow. I will then tilt the tank so that is the lowest part (front of the tank up) and can get all but a very tiny amount out of the tank (about 2 tablespoons). The reason I make the rod (coat hanger) a few inches longer is so that I can squeeze the hose where the rod is to insure that it does not slide out of the hose while inserting or removing. And, if for some reason it slipped out of the hose it can never ever fall all the way into the tank but will always be a few inches sticking out. Also, if you find that special tool for the clamp it too expensive for you, you can do what I did. I took a pair of "end nipper pliers that are shaped just like them and filed down the sharp edge, they work just great and can usually get them at places like Harbor Freight A LOT cheaper ($6.99 for the 10" ones) than that special tool! Sorry that I got long winded here, didn't mean to write a novel.

      Great tips, thanks! Too bad you live 2,500 miles away! I went back and looked at the manual, I see the nubs you are talking about now. One suggestion someone had was to use stainless steel safety wire instead of a clamp. Interesting idea, it's not like it has to hold a lot of pressure. Well, glad it's done. I was out snow blowing in 4゚ again this morning, lol.

  • @chrisn4369
    @chrisn4369 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    in your video description, you said you would "use zip ties inside of the hose clamp". i'm assuming you meant "instead". would a zip tie be enough strength to keep it together?

    • @bluesriderDF
      @bluesriderDF  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chris Namgung: Yes, instead of. The screw on the hose clamps made it really difficult to insert it into the fuel tank because they were too big. Most other bike fuel pumps use zip ties here instead of metal clamps. Google motorcycle fuel pump and you'll see.
      Another option is to use stainless steel picture frame hanger wire. 4-5 wraps and just twist the ends together. Probably overkill though, there's just not that much force there.
