I just came across this video searching about termites after discovering them in our yard. My husband and I were removing the mulch in flower beds and around trees in our yard to replace with rocks. I found little white ant-looking bugs crawling after removing sections of the cedar edging surrounding one of the trees. I had no idea they were termites until I was hosing the edging a few minutes later and noticed chunks of wood missing from the bottom of some sections. I had never seen termites before but instantly realized that is what they were, a couple even crawled out of the holes. I showed my husband who confirmed it We had just purchased the edging four months ago and it never crossed either of our minds that using cedar edging or mulch would be a concern for termites. I am kind of annoyed because that edging was pricey but also grateful to have discovered them when we did. It will not be put back; instead replaced with stone edging.
Thank you so much for this information. We just dealt with dry wood termites and had our house tented. We had been doing a curb appeal renovation adding a new porch with Cedar of wall things very expensive but it looks gorgeous gorgeous. We found the termites like a month later. I hadn't done landscaping was trying to decide if I wanted rocks or mulch. Your comment has save me time and money already
Let me clarify something for everyone and this reporter: subterranean termites are a type of termite in which there are multiple species. The one that she is referring to, as the very destructive one is the subterranean formosans. There is a species that is called the eastern subterranean. The eastern subterranean is nowhere near as destructive as the Formosan. These are the ones that showed up in Hallandale Florida in the 1980s.
This reminds me, never put mulch anywhere near your house. Yes the termites love the mulch and will build a colony in it. Best to keep a distance away around the house.
@@juliocamacho8354 For sure. Space it out a bit. At least 2-4 inches from the house with fabric underneath and no more than a 2" layer, you should be fine.
We have 2 different types of subterranean termites in Florida. The ones they are talking about in this video are Formosan termites that are invasive. We also have the native species or eastern subterranean termites. I've been with Massey services for 6 yrs and have seen so much damage from them.
At least termites eat a healthy diet high in fiber, so I suppose they deserve credit for that. Wouldn't want a million obese termites with colon cancer to have to take care of.
I've noticed the ones that like to occasionally invade my room come out only when I turn my bedroom light off. They make very small holes in my wall, or ceiling. I've put drywall spackling to ceal the holes as a temporary fix. They have not broken through in about a week now, but I'm sure they'll show up again.
My dad put dead wood against the holiday house to build a ramp for rain water. He wanted to save money for plant irrigation. I inherited the holiday home and have to invest 80k to rebuild the wooden roof. He did all the wrong things. Moisture, dead wood and plants close to the house, even touching the roof. Otherwise rational man, well read and informed made such fatal mistakes....
This was one of the most interesting videos I've seen in a while. And I could no help but notice that the termites used in the carpenter's drawings look more like fleas than termites. LOL. Thank you.
I live in Louisiana and we have Formosan termites here. The previous owner of the house I bought 3 years ago left it seriously neglected. The bathroom drain has a hole in the slab where they often gain entrance however, the damage to the shower stall wall is high up in the top plate area and the lower part still intact. They're all long gone and I have no active infestation and have a liquid barrier however am dealing with the repairs.
Subs themselves did not arrive in 1980 in Florida, they have been here forever. These are Formosans subterranean termites. He says it, but she does not.
What does a person do when they’re poor and they can’t afford to get rid of the termites, except maybe getting on a payment plan that is very low. I live in a single wide mobile home that has been permanently fixed to the property. I also have an addition that is attached to my mobile home and that is where the termites have entered. They are in my ceiling, baseboards, oh dear Lord Jesus I need a prayer
Its so sad they don’t sell this sentricon bait station to the public, you have to hire exterminator company who will install it for $4000 and then monitor for $400 a year
How long do you need to vacate your house when you are treating both dry wood and subterranean termites? What pesticides are used when tinting your house for termites?
Doing research after finding some and bates can attract NEW termites. They can be making their way to the bate but stop at your house and never make it to bate trap. Not the best way to treat them.
This year we had major subterranean termite infestation. But at the same time we had some pool rusting (concrete pool) right where the worst of the termites were. I know they dont eat concrete but is it possible for them to make exploratory holes into the pool concrete looking for food/water (thereby allowing water to hit the rebar and rust?? Anyone hear anything like this?
Ill tell you something that you probably don’t know about termites, they taste very very yummy, they taste like a citrusy candy and if I ever see them i eat as many as I can
What an EXCELLENT video. Someone actually interviewed an expert. Thank you!
My favorite part was when the termite was holding a pencil
Wearing a hard hat, examining the house plans, LOL
Lol mission impossible
The termites is gonna be big brain

Thank you for making this video. I am so pissed about termites who were about to get into our new furnitures. 🤬

Good tip, thank you so mulch.

Going to be removing the one close to my house today.
@hairlesheep what do you use instead of mulch, then?
Dr. Su is spot-on...excellent information.
“Our team probably me” so relatable

Awesome information regarding termites and their management

Termite don't like light and you have dry-wood termites.
@@enginepaul8099 Thank you! I've moved to a new location in January, but I still appreciate the information.
This was an excellent 10 / 10 video
Termites are not attracted to sentricon stations! It’s called random foraging. Larger colonies forage more, so it works better on Formosans.
They're not attracted to the station itself, it's the cellulose product used as bait
They just started showing themselves in my place... so pissed off!!
Craig Clark us too... we went to the store came back and saw them crawling around in 3 rooms wth.... never had this problem
Same here.. came out of nowhere it seem
Dang that sucks guys. Are there gone know, what did u do?
At least you don't have bed bugs.
Draw the circle and start saving lol

Thanks for the video! If they're already in the house how can a bait work from the ground 300 feet away?
Treat the pop ups with termador dry. Strip the walls. Expensive right? Not as expensive as replacing a whole frame/joist. 😌
where can one purchase the Dr Su bait stations?
Chemical barrier is an absolute solution.
Absolutely not sentricon bait stations are best solution
trenched my house as a preventative, I picked July to do it, was not fun.
Are there any government help plans that can help someone get rid of the termites in their home when a person is very poor?
…..

Yeah those are flea illustrations, lol

Is there an insect that will eat or destroy the subterranean termites, so to say nemesis?
Who else thought of Breaking Bad when they were "tenting" ? :p
Very informative and useful video.
Great informations, thank you!
I love this woman she is amazing!

Very well done. I learned a lot from this video!
where can I purchase the Sentricon system for subterranean termites. I have them her in California and when I look online I dont see this brand.
You ever find it? 🤔
I liked the professional scientist interview

I know this comment is late. I disagree. I can get you the system for 1200 for the installation if you're in Orlando.
Why they used a flea in the sketches lmao
I hope they always check the old sparkies for any possible termite infestation. No one wants the wooden seat to collapse at the crucial moment!
What type of wood they don't like? And what's the best wood for a fence?
Redwood or cedar are good for wood fences.
They check every 3 months down here in Florida in Miami, why they are doing mines every 3 months
excellent video
Thank you!
Your termite toons are actually fleas.
How long do you need to vacate your house when you are treating both dry wood and subterranean termites?

Do fumigants penetrate Formosan Carton nests?
It’s lactic acid bacteria, not concentrated hydrochloric acid.
Wrong subterranean termites did not make their first appearance in Hollandale Florida 1980 they been here for centuries
Cocaine arrived in 1980
i tried emailing you but you didn't respond
So, why termites build mud tubes ?
Protects them from predators and the elements.
