Absolutely fascinating little creatures I love the education these nature docs give me, I've binged on ant docs, giant asian hornet docs, now termites. Got to say I found the lichen to be quite amazing as well. The way those lichen have evolved such an ingenious but simple trap just fascinates the hell out of me.
Those termites see attack on titan when humans break open their walls and smile at them creepily. A very impressive species tho, they deserve great respect for recycling and maintaining the natural cycle.
Great documentary but I would have liked it to contain more information, not just looking at them. Sure they are amazing and all but I would have liked to get insight on their defence capabilities, how their acid works, more about their feromone usage, social behaevior, forming of ventilation, predators and all kinds of stuff but this documentary touched the deep information very vaguely. When they gave insight how their internals process plant materia kept me going trough the whole document hoping for more deep information but it never came.
WOW, they are really impressive, they build infrastucture like roads, tunnels, high rises, and they even have acid cannons to defend against an assault on the other ant colonies they're really amazing little creatures, plus they can travel for many miles, and they can carry lots of food for the long journey home, they really are an amazing species. I just wish they didn't eat our homes and cause so much damage, if they didnt do that then i'd really like those little guys.
It’s our fault for building homes made out of their food (wood) and then creating good living conditions. Earth/brick and concrete-based buildings don’t have these issues.
Well this species are more interested in plant matters but if you leave them undisturbed they will destroy your house but if not they will respect themselves

I'm not saying it's unethical or something like that as this could still happen in the wild if specialized predators (such as the anteaters) decided to do it but at the end of the day the termites still have to pay something just because of human's curiosity.

This was fantastic. Just seeing that queen at the end in such detail was extraordinary. Bravo! I mean, bugs really seem like aliens. It's actually kind of terrifying, in a way. But I think that's what makes it so fascinating.
Fascinating subject matter and well-captured visuals. The sound, however, is a nightmare at least early on around 15:00. Echoing eerie piercing tones that are so sharp and loud that I had to turn the sound down just to bear them. I think the intention was to create a "creepy" ambiance but it ends up sounding like somebody's high schooler found the reverb

I remember as a child discovering some termites eating a table, when I got real close I noticed that they have humongous heads and I thought that they were really cute with those big heads .

But a branch 3 must fill out a Termite report or verbally ask the applicator to apply termiticide, etc. But a branch 2 cannot under law. So as a branch 2 that I was I could not technically tell or inform a homeowner they had termites unless I was also branch 3. Not even an applicator can, even though the applicator sees and applies termiticide every living day haha. I'm no longer a pest control technicians but to answer your questions I was both on base pay and small commission based

This was a great documentary. However I wish they would have included Zootermopsis angusticollis or Damp Wood Termites in this documentary. The Secrets of Nature, perhaps you can make a separate doc on Zootermopsis angusticollis. They are not a pest and are north americas largest termite.
Since we know termites cause so much damage to homes, maybe homes should start being made with treated wood, much like how railroads treat railroad ties, just a thought.

A very interesting video, don't understand why if the queen became agitated after being place back into the mound that her soldiers might possibly kill her, the narrator never mentioned why, I summarize that if the queen acted strangely that the soldiers would think that she was a foreign body? James Jackson Maybe if the queen acts strangely, the soldiers will think she might be close to death or showing some weakness. In some ant nests where there are multiple queens, the workers follow the strongest queen and will eventually kill off the weaker queens. Maybe it's the same with termites.

I've recently been kinda bored by mammals because i've noticed that even if they evolved completely separated from eachother they often seem to develop similar traits for similar reasons, sort of limiting the variety. Bugs even though I mostly just find them disturbing in real life encounters and want as little to do with them as possible they're often pretty darn fascinating when you get to learn about them and observe them from a "safe" distance on a screen. Because they seem to have greater diffrences from eachother often with surprising abilities and behavior that are almost hard to believe. _(Or atleast those interesting enough to be covered like this I guess)_ In this case their incredible orderly societies. Although it's kind of like they're just giant sized bacteria, enzymes, blood cells or whatever else you don't usually consider individual lives but something filling a function to keep a bigger lifeform alive like for example animals and it seems science leans towards that too when they refer to colonies as one living thing. On a side note though, is it really that hard to come up with protection against wood termites if they're so destructive? I'm obviously no expert in the field but it doesn't feel like it would require a rare form of genius to find/create something that either kills them or make them uninterested in wood coated with it that you could blend into paint without adding a cost that isn't worth adding to pretty much every can of paint ever made considering what it would cost if termites invade your home instead. But if something like that in fact already exists like it should, why are wood termites still a problem?
Depends where you get the wood. Lots of wood can be treated for termites though it's more costly so it's used less. At that point it's up to pest control.

This was a great documentary. However I wish they would have included Zootermopsis angusticollis or Damp Wood Termites in this documentary.
The Secrets of Nature, perhaps you can make a separate doc on Zootermopsis angusticollis. They are not a pest and are north americas largest termite.
Since we know termites cause so much damage to homes, maybe homes should start being made with treated wood, much like how railroads treat railroad ties, just a thought.

A very interesting video, don't understand why if the queen became agitated after being place back into the mound that her soldiers might possibly kill her, the narrator never mentioned why, I summarize that if the queen acted strangely that the soldiers would think that she was a foreign body?

James Jackson Maybe if the queen acts strangely, the soldiers will think she might be close to death or showing some weakness. In some ant nests where there are multiple queens, the workers follow the strongest queen and will eventually kill off the weaker queens. Maybe it's the same with termites.

I'm wondering if the reason why termites are invading houses is due to to many trees being harvested. Therefore termites follow the food source, which are houses with plenty of wood.

Fascinating documentary, I really enjoyed it 😊
I've recently been kinda bored by mammals because i've noticed that even if they evolved completely separated from eachother they often seem to develop similar traits for similar reasons, sort of limiting the variety.
Bugs even though I mostly just find them disturbing in real life encounters and want as little to do with them as possible they're often pretty darn fascinating when you get to learn about them and observe them from a "safe" distance on a screen.
Because they seem to have greater diffrences from eachother often with surprising abilities and behavior that are almost hard to believe.
_(Or atleast those interesting enough to be covered like this I guess)_
In this case their incredible orderly societies. Although it's kind of like they're just giant sized bacteria, enzymes, blood cells or whatever else you don't usually consider individual lives but something filling a function to keep a bigger lifeform alive like for example animals and it seems science leans towards that too when they refer to colonies as one living thing.
On a side note though, is it really that hard to come up with protection against wood termites if they're so destructive?
I'm obviously no expert in the field but it doesn't feel like it would require a rare form of genius to find/create something that either kills them or make them uninterested in wood coated with it that you could blend into paint without adding a cost that isn't worth adding to pretty much every can of paint ever made considering what it would cost if termites invade your home instead.
But if something like that in fact already exists like it should, why are wood termites still a problem?
Depends where you get the wood. Lots of wood can be treated for termites though it's more costly so it's used less. At that point it's up to pest control.
